The great thing about Soul Train is they sing to the recorded version. Usually that would be sacrilege, but this way you see the performance with the original song we all fell in love with. 😁❤️

Awesome! 1972. The O'Jays perfected the sound of smoothness in the seventies. "For The Love Of Money" (1973) was also sampled a fair bit in eighties and nineties hip-hop. I was too young to remember when those songs were brand new, but they did get radio play later in the decade. That "What they do?" part in this one stood out to cap off that smooth guitar/shimmering violins intro. The song by The O'Jays that I remember well is "Use Ta Be My Girl" from 1978. That song reminds me of late summer in the back seat of the car listening to the radio and starring out the window while your older sister drives you all home from the lake in the mountains...

Backstabbers includes a direct line from an earlier hit song by The Undisputed Truth called Smilin Faces Sometimes. Soul crossover I guess, same theme.

"WHAT THEY DO?" The legendary O'Jays with Eddie Levert singing lead and Walter Williams providing the assist on this '72 classic is a definite "10s-across-the-board" right from that opening piano tremolo! The O'Jays could also slow jam with the best of them, their beautiful '79 ballad Forever Mine is worth a listen. These Soul Train clips are like re-living my teens, so thankful to have had all this amazing music growing up back then and thrilled that others are enjoying much of it for the first time half a century later. Another great reaction Empress! 🤩 💯

Great tune of course! We did get 3 fire bops last month too. First time two months in a row! One little side note on this song and sample. It always blew my mind how Angie used this backstabbing song sample to pen her track about a man that left her for another…. It doesn’t get any smoother than that. Aloha 🌈🔥
