Love this review! I own an AE86 so I was so glad to see you enjoy driving one! But I highly suggest you try driving a standard 16V NA or 20V swap AE86, The NA engines sound much better than boosted versions. The 4AGE's signature sound comes from the intake not the exhaust so I personally think you'd have more fun in an NA :)
As a jdm classic and legendary car I would’ve kept it all original and only added original oem Toyota modifications and taken it to car shows, and featured it in magazines. For example, an all original Trueno 4A-GE manual trans ae86 would be museum worthy. Of course there’s always that one guy that fucks a car’s original condition and drops the value down the toilet by modifying it. I’m cringed by it, but I will say this... Whoever did all the work to that car did an incredible job and clearly spent a lot of time and money on it. I can respect hard work paying off.
Shuichi Shigeno the creator of the anime/manga Initial D took inspiration from Keiichi Tsuchiya. Both of them drive a white panda Toyota AE86. The car was popular even before Initial D as Keiichi Tsuchiya was drifting up and down the touge with his privately owned AE86 GT-V. Skyline GTRs, Mazda RX-7 and other more powerful JDM legends are out of reach of the normal drifters so the alternative choice of Front engine RWD car was none other than the AE86. And like TDIB said, the short wheelbase and close to 50 : 50 weight balance makes the car tail happy which is perfect for drifting and drift recovery. The original 4A engine was mostly a cast iron block, aluminum cylinder head unit producing less than 100bhp at the crank. The legendary 4AGE 16V was a joint development with Toyota and Yamaha Motor division. The reliability and performance of these engines has earned them a fair number of enthusiasts and a fan base as they are a popular choice for an engine swap into other Toyota cars such as the KE70 and KP61. New performance parts are still available for sale even today because of its strong fan base. Production of the various models of this version lasted for five generations, from May 1983 through 1991 for 16-valve versions and the 20-valve 4A-GE lasting through 1998. Aside from the memes about Eurobeats and Initial D. The AE86 def has a cult following behind it. This AE86 is the coupe version, which is similar to what Shinji Inui, the final boss of the Sidewinder was driving against Takumi AE86 which is a liftback. There is a Levin coupe and liftback as well except the headlights are fixed units vs the pop up units on the Truenos. There were even rare drop top coupe versions of the AE86 but were limited number production. The USDM AE86 4AGE had only 112BHP vs the 128bhp for the JDM one. It common for AE86 owners to swap in the 4AGE 20V Silvertop or Blacktop found in the AE101 or AE111. Ton of work needed to fit the FWD engine to a RWD platform but the result is a fast car with lots of char. There was a special 4AGE 16V built for the Formula Atlantic that produce 240bhp at 10,000 rpm. You guys should hear how the 4AGE 20V BT ITBs sounds here ua-cam.com/video/F6y-sc9hWp0/v-deo.html put it in VR for the added effect of getting sucked into the engine
Thanks for the video link! Sounds sexy as hell. The 20V engine is still one of my favourites. One of these days I'll finally find a shell suitable to put one into.
I loved this car before I discovered initial D tbh. My dad owned a 1985 Toyota Corolla SR5 that he painted blue (a similar to what you use for your cars). I loved the car mostly for its weird headlights (one of the first car I’ve ever seen with pop up headlights) and it’s beautiful eye catching blue. I knew something was special about it. My dad unfortunately traded it in for a Mustang 25th anniversary edition.
Scoobert Doobert these were everywhere when i grew up. To the people at the track it was just a miata. Because the miata was too expensive at the time. So almost everyone i grew up racing with has/had owned at least one of these at some point. I'm gonna try get one too.
some aw11 mr2's came with a supercharged 4ag engine (the 4agze) The AE86 came with the 4age. The engines are exactly the same except the supercharger. That is why it looks oem
yeah Vegard Ulven is quite wrong. There are more differences than just the Supercharger. If you'd like to know more there are archives of the tech specs of the 4AGE and 4AGZE kept here. club4ag.com/tech-data/tech-specs/
Legotruck82 im talking about the channel host. The engines arent that much different. Its an A family engine. 4ag 16v head have very minor differences the main difference between a gze an a ge is mostly bottom end differences and other bolt ons. Host seems to think its some engine that is somehow a totally different engine.
I've owned 2 AE86 Hatchbacks and I love them. They have been good to me over the years. and the original blue top 4age, T-50 trans, and factory limited slip diff are all still working on my 1985 GT-S..
Lmfao this video is funny as hell. Man I'd kill to be in your shoes in that moment though driving such a vintage JDM masterpiece. The AE86 will ALWAYS be my favorite old school japanese car. It's just has so much going for it even after over 30 years since it's debut. Definitely is a major piece of heritage.
tommyboy1two that’s only Te72 never owned Sr5 with slant rear window. Those are very rare. Te72 was my first car I owned they hold a special place in my heart. 3tc with Sidedraft Weber Carbs sounds amazing.
Ric Woodgett i lived in malaysia . So it very very rare to get ae86 . If we got one . It will be almost 100k malaysia ringgit . It around about 30k usd . So ya . . . . . Sad
Ricer E46 literally everyone here thinks they can get every single penny back for their car on the used market. I hate trying to buy cars in washington.
Hey David just a quick mention that Toyota did indeed produce FWD Corollas of the E80 series at the same time as the AE85/6, those shared the 4age engine along with others too. I enjoyed the video keep up the good work as always!
After my '86 GT-S converted SR-5 is done I may get in touch with you; I also have a bone-stock all original ST-162 Celica I'd be willing to let you have a go in. I haven't even driven my AE86, but just spending time working on it has a funny effect on you; it's a car thats got a very special mojo about it.
Johnny Keller going from gts back to sr5. It's not gonna increase in value, and it's not gonna increase performance or driveability. If i were you I'd either rebuild the 4age, swap in a new 4age and tackle all the wiring and previous owner headaches overtime, or upgrade to an f20c. I just don't see a point in downgrading to a 4ac, open diff, drum brake Corolla when you have a "gts".
A classic and a legend. I owned a 84’ SR5 AE86 for 7 year. One that i recently junk-yarded do to the 3 time blown motor and the bay in-front of my house rusting it away. I loved that car and i always enjoyed driving it. And it was a panda too. I have plans on buying another one. They are very common here in puerto rico.
Just search *_Running in the 90s remix_* and it should be there. At the top, if you want I can try to put the link here as well, my comment may be late as i am a bit busy now.
Ahh my dad's '86. First car I ever drove back in 1995. That panda had a bad clutch and a cracked engine block but still ran like a champ. Best car to tinker around, best car to drive time attacks, and best car to teach your kids how to drive manual.
The title is misleading to newbies. It's simply a Corolla with a 4AG-ZE swapped from the first-gen AW11 MR2. In Japan, the AE92 and AE101 Corolla Levin/Sprinter Trueno GT-Z came with the same supercharged version of the 16 valve 4AGE. It's a pretty common swap.
How is it misleading? The car is an AE86 (Yes, known as a Corolla GT-S/SR5 in the US, but the chassis code is still AE86). It has a supercharged MR2 engine. What is the problem here?
The AE86 originally came with a 16valve 4age, it’s the same engine just with a supercharger, the AE92 and AE101 came with blacktop and silver top 20 valve 4age engines
my unopened all original 4agze that's turbo'd is at 15 psi and doing fine. also take it from someone who has one, these are not 150$$ swaps anymore. 4agze are even kinda hard to find for sale now
I always wanted to know what this swap would be like....for over 10 years now. Finally I get to see it. And it's as good as I always thought it could be.
It’s funny cuz before the AE86 was an underrated car that had the ability to drift extremely well, and wasn’t too slow, but it wasn’t the fastest either. When it was wrecked they put a new engine in it, I don’t remember if it was specified what engine was put in, but it gave the car a massive upgrade, so pretty much what you have here.
SERPENT IN THE RAINBOW to do a valve job requires the valves to be removed. To put new valve seats in it requires machine work which requires valves to be removed. The only valve "job" they could've done is a valve lap but it wouldn't have been a proper valve lap in any way. He's probably saying it has aftermarket valve springs but said it wrong.
JYates89coupe I would guess tdib was told something sorta weird and he repeated it sorta weird that made it sound weird. If it was told without the game of telephone it might make sense but it was probably just a weird misunderstanding. I would guess valve springs because that would be the easiest performance head related gain that doesn't necessarily need the head removed for
Lol the mr2 and Corolla both come with 4ages’, I am getting triggered that David keeps saying mr2 engine lol the only difference is the supercharged, and a valve job consists of removing the head.? Dude really.?
Eurobeat make everything better. Nuff said. Also that red Corolla screamed "I'm going to work but let get dem low angle photos first" that red is fantastic
Finally! David reviews an AE86! Also, the MR2 supercharged motor is just a supercharged 4AGE, the 4AGZE, 7 rib block with a stronger internals and a GZE specific head and supercharger, but they're both 4AG motors
Mint. let me guess, you call the USDM S13 an S13? The irony is strong with this one, you do realize that the USDM S13 doesn't say S13 in the VIN? You don't call an 86 an 86 because of the VIN, you call it that because of the Chassis code, Japan doesn't even have VINs
I went crazy when I got to drive a 1984 Toyota Celica GT, it was slow but it was so much fun to drive. I wish I could buy one, I imagine I would have the same response to an AE86 like this one if I ever got to drive one.
Had a great time making this one!
What do you think of the 86?
ThatDudeinBlue different! I like crazy swaps! Keep em coming
Love this review! I own an AE86 so I was so glad to see you enjoy driving one! Wow
Keiichi did not use a panda. He used a white Kouki.
Thanks for the video link! Sounds sexy as hell. The 20V engine is still one of my favourites. One of these days I'll finally find a shell suitable to put one into.
Does Keiichi not still own his? All the Best Motoring videos from the last couple years I've seen it's still around.
Lin Chester im glad I took the time to read this and not scroll past it like i was gonna do, thank you dude much love ✌🏻
You know a lot of people said that the 90s was the worst year, but for us car guys it was pretty good.
90s was a great year for japanese cars, the decade I was born in and the decade that had some of my favourite vehicles ever made.
Wind of change I know right? I was born in 1996, first Japanese car I ever saw was the supra mk4 and the skyline r34, and I fell in love with them.
I was born in 95 myself, after watching the first fast and furious as a kid so did I.
i was born in 97 so great decade
Slid Wheel remember the 90s god? The McLaren f1!
fun fact if you play eurobeat while driving an ae86 you become Takumi but if you wear a racing suit you become Keiichi.
Tomi Vuori if you have no girlfriend it becomes an ae85 and you become itsuki
Leejk 😂
Tomi Vuori a green suit
If you say c o o l v i b r a t i o n s into your rear mirror a red EG6 will appear behind you and bump you.
Tomi Vuori this is closer to Warutu's 86 rather than Takumi's as it's super charged
I was just watching initial d and this was in my notification i love u for playing eurobeat in the intro
I love how he kept most of the OG interior and didn’t gut it completely. I’m the type of person that likes the OG interior with a cleaner look

thats why i questioned why it looked the same, why didnt he just straight up say the 4agze? or maybe it was the 3au before?
4agze had forged pistons and tvis was removed.
Throw an oversized crank pulley on it and wire in a grunt box for a bit more punchiness.
Yeah... this "dude" doesnt really have a lot of knowledge...

Ae86 is a blast to own that’s why I’ve had four of them. Even had five Te72 Corollas and two Te31. Great little cars.
I bought my te72 sr5 a year ago $7000 and a gts rear end later I've learned sooo much
tommyboy1two that’s only Te72 never owned Sr5 with slant rear window. Those are very rare. Te72 was my first car I owned they hold a special place in my heart. 3tc with Sidedraft Weber Carbs sounds amazing.

Johnny Keller make some vids bro I'll be converting my sr5 soon
Johnny Keller why go backwards?
Braddah E
Are you talking about opting for carbs over ITB's?
What are you talking about "why go backwards"?
Johnny Keller going from gts back to sr5. It's not gonna increase in value, and it's not gonna increase performance or driveability. If i were you I'd either rebuild the 4age, swap in a new 4age and tackle all the wiring and previous owner headaches overtime, or upgrade to an f20c. I have watched the beginning 9 times, each times it makes me smile
I drove my panda 86 to work today on the way I had two people ask me to sell the car
Ae86 fan boy love !
The mr2 engine is just a supercharged rendition of the stock gts motor which is why it fits well.... it sounds so good!!! I miss driving my 86 😩

do you happen to know the other song in the intro aswell ?

“You’re a living piece of anime”. Best description of the AE86
All right, ill be the one to say it. Yall are gonna throw shade and internet hate at me, but The hachiroku is better than any muscle car... ever...
Gemini you’re entitled to your opinion, even if it’s wrong 😎
Chris Pofahl opinions are personal beliefs of which none are factual so if none are right then yours isn’t either 😂 lets just agree cars are cool

I have a Mr2 supercharged, this made my day😢
jeremy hershey I have a mr2 supercharger
MR2!!!! for the win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have an MR2 turbo, it's the SW20 though :-P
That thing is so clean wish everyone would take care of their cars like this
The title is misleading to newbies.
Auggie Gibson AE92 cars never got the 20 Valve 4AGE. AE92 ran from 1987-1991. The silver top made its debut in late 1991 in AE101 chassis cars.
Britton Wright yeah your right lol doesn’t matter at the fact the ae86 still came with the 4age
Brett US chassis code is actually AE88. I personally think the coupe is ugly. Hatchback is best
AE86 and the 4AG series engines are amazing. The 4AG20v I had in my AE92 hatch was the most character full engine I've ever had the pleasure to own
Neat build but David, you can't do a valve job without removing the head
Chris Bouchard was thinking that also lol
i love how you can hear the shifts metallic click
I have not been this early since the soviets took over Berlin
A JDM Legend worthy of recognition easily.
*WEEABOO* *INTENSIFIES*

marxie uwu is it at 500k yet
It's for sure a jdm legend and my dream car. Sadly one probably never finds these cars in Germany.
my unopened all original 4agze that's turbo'd is at 15 psi and doing fine. also take it from someone who has one, these are not 150$$ swaps anymore. 4agze are even kinda hard to find for sale now
a few grand and lots and lots and lots and lots of time. mines in an aw11
Vibhu Srivatsa Iyer lotta unopened 4agze turbo conversations easily do 350hp
I always wanted to know what this swap would be like....for over 10 years now. Finally I get to see it. And it's as good as I always thought it could be.
I haven't seen an AE86 on UA-cam 4AGEs! Where can I get that song at the start of the video?
Aero777 literally search 'initial d soundtrack' should come up
The song is called "Running in the 90s"
My man prepare yourself because eurobeat will consume your life.
Found the song. Thanks, guys!
It’s funny cuz before the AE86 was an underrated car that had the ability to drift extremely well, and wasn’t too slow, but it wasn’t the fastest either. Valve job without taking the head off.
Samuel Mancia take the valve cover off not the head
SERPENT IN THE RAINBOW to do a valve job requires the valves to be removed. To put new valve seats in it requires machine work which requires valves to be removed. Yes Eurobeat! Lmao
Keep this same energy for all your vids homie!! You're back!
Lol the mr2 and Corolla both come with 4ages’, I am getting triggered that David keeps saying mr2 engine lol the only difference is the supercharged, and a valve job consists of removing the head.? Dude really.?
That ae86 could be a sr5 which had the 4ac.
Well, technically, the MR2 was the first car to have a 4agze. Then this 86 was swapped with the MR2 4agze
@@reiokei4275 the mr2 was the only car that came with the 4agze
Eurobeat make everything better. Nuff said. Also that red Corolla screamed "I'm going to work but let get dem low angle photos first" that red is fantastic
İf I had a choice of the newest nsx or Supra, and had the choice of the AE86 hachiroku, I'm going Corolla all the way.
I absolutely love the ae86 it had a massive change to the car community it's a legend in the car/drifting world. Those are my thoughts
How do you do a valve job with out taking off the head????
monster1176 exactly my thought.. you cant remove a valave from where the cams are obviously
Maybe he meant valve seal job
Valve Stem Seals is what he meant I am guessing
That's what I was thinking lol
didn't he say the only thing a valve job.
I’m happy with my 4AC powered 86, probably the best car I’ve ever bought ;)
Wow😂😂😂funny as hell!!!🤘🏼🤠🤘🏼🇺🇸
Finally! David reviews an AE86! Also, the MR2 supercharged motor is just a supercharged 4AGE, the 4AGZE, 7 rib block with a stronger internals and a GZE specific head and supercharger, but they're both 4AG motors
Also, I HIGHLY recommend you drive an NA 4AGE 16V or 20V, especially with ITBS, the NA engine has so much more character than the 4AGZE IMO

This is the biggest I have ever smiled thank you David for making my life😁
Its an ae88 if its a USDM car
Mint. Its not, ae88 is in the vin of all gts model corollas, but right next to the vin number "ae86" is marked on the firewall
Kw Skater plus the sr5 has ae86 instead of ae88 like the gts
infamousjuan exactly and if the SR5 with a shitty 4AC is classified as an ae86 then the GT-S sure as hell would be too
Who cares. I’m tired of this “UM ITS ACTUALLY AN AE88” shit. It’s an AE86.
Mint. let me guess, you call the USDM S13 an S13? The irony is strong with this one, you do realize that the USDM S13 doesn't say S13 in the VIN? You don't call an 86 an 86 because of the VIN, you call it that because of the Chassis code, Japan doesn't even have VINs
I've wanted to see one of these for a long time. The 4A-GZE is great.
Anyone know any funny racist jokes?
Dominick Vulpis. Yea my account cant drive lol
Why doesn't the NIGGA eat black chocolate?
Cuz I didn't want to eat his fingers
ohhhhh that intake/exhaust note is so proper for a yota 4 banger.
I went crazy when I got to drive a 1984 Toyota Celica GT, it was slow but it was so much fun to drive. I wish I could buy one, I imagine I would have the same response to an AE86 like this one if I ever got to drive one.
The AE-86 is an absolute jdm legend. It had a huge role in the car community
Awesome car n set up. It's a real 80s n 90s period correct swap. Love it.
It's a legend. When I have contributed as much as it has to anything I will give a negative comment about it. Until then, salute.

A great car that should never have gone out of production
Gotta love the tell-tale whine of a T-series rear axle that's had it's pinion crush sleeve clutch licked to death 💀
Long time coming but I'm so happy this is a video
The opening alone got this video a like.
This came out so good David
Initial D reminds me of when I first bought my Viper. I would watch it and polish my wheels at the same time 🙂
I'm glad I haven't died yet to be able to enjoy an AE86 video from dudeinblue
