Leah had never been photographed before. How to help someone relax and own and photoshoot..
A sneak preview of the new channel devoted to portrait studio photography I'm launching soon. - Фільми й анімація
I like this new side of your channel. Your experience as a portrait photographer is valuable to us.
Sure! :-)
I second this post!!!
Agreed!
This is amazing watching you work with the sitter and getting her comfortable to open up and project confidence. I've never seen anything like this on UA-cam. I'm an amatuer photographer. I've always been afraid to take portraits expecting them to look like my childhood family portraits from the mass production studios we sent to. I've learned so much in just 16 minutes. You're giving me confidence to take family portraits. Please keep these videos coming.
Thanks Chris. Glad it helped you!
Another UA-camr and Inspire Photographer that does show that is Peter Coulson. And if you speak German Andreas Jorns.
This was really fun to watch! It makes me miss portraiture. I can’t wait to see more of your studio work with subjects!
Wonderful. Portraiture has always scared me but I have set myself a goal of getting vaguely competent at it! I've been studying lighting and watching how professional models are directed but never found anything like this. Just what I need. Thanks so much Alex!
I really liked this one. After making the jump from landscape to portraiture, I am having to learn how to put my sitter at ease which was never a concern with a tree. I liked the way you worked through the shoot to get the right look. Thank you!
This is truly amazing. I've seen online videos that discuss the lighting, white balance, camera settings, etc. when it comes to portraits, but NEVER how to be human with the person being captured. You're capturing her image, but also her attention while putting her at ease. Just spectacular. I will never be this good, but that's okay, because I'll never be Michael Jordan either, doesn't mean I can't enjoy this! So wonderful!!!
Absolutely brilliant Alex, thank you so much for doing this. Such a wealth of information and experience.
Loved this video. Amazing how different feelings can change your portraits
Great video Alex. Fun to watch you working in your studio.
I am amazed at how different your background looks between the video capture and the projected still from your Canon.
Thank you for another good and informative video especially on portrait photography 😊👌
I didn't see the end card. But that's quite the transformation! I'll search out that part II.
It would be interesting to see how you edit, especially for those of us who rarely shoot portraits.
Interesting video you did here. You were showing the young woman what was going to happen during the photo shoot and what to expect. She looked so terrified, I thought she was going to run as fast she could out of there. Good thing you relaxed her nerves.
Holy crap that transition from the first picture to 16:07! Wow! I’m blown away! Thank you Alex!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
It was really cool seeing your model transform from uncertain to confident. You could just see her body language open up as you progressed. Well done!
Thanks - that's what I was hoping to illustrate
Awesome! A great lesson to start portrait photography. And by the way this young lady is gorgeous, she has so much charm and somehow mystery in her eyes...great model
Glad you enjoyed it!
Finally someone using 50-mil, not 85, for portraits. Allowing to get closer. And, yes! "No smiling". Really love that guy. Also, no tripod, yes!
edit: The model is sweet.
Thank you
Fantastic. Thank you. All the best. 👍📷😎
It was a real treat watching the artist at work.
Simply wonderful. Looking forward to the new channel. Cheers.
Oooo I love that! I want to start portraiture and this is so inspiring! Thank you Alex! Looking forward for more on your new channel.
Awesome! Thank you!
The wobbly chair was a great ice breaker 😊. Thank you Alex and thank you Leah for being such a good sport. Great to see you working Alex. This was so interesting. The way you progressed the shoot was great. 😍😍😍😍😍
Perfect timing. I just got access to a well stocked studio again and was about to start shooting some portraits.
I really liked watching your interaction with the model. I find this the hardest part in a portrait session and watching you working with the model is very helpful. Looking forward to the next video.
Beautiful photos. Good job, Leah. It’s surprising how many people don’t take direction so well.
So true!
Love this direction you're going Alex! Being able to watch you work like this is really helpful in addressing & building my own confidence. What terrifies me the most about portraiture is directing people and I'm allowing that to slow my progress. You've given me a nice simple starting point that will help ease my anxiety as I continue to dip my toes into the world of portraiture :) Thank you!✌❤
Watch your channel religiously. Love this session.
I'm very excited to see part 2! I've never done portraits before but want to give it a go, and seeing you work is so helpful. I especially like how you explain that you need to sort of warm up going from easy and relaxed things before you move into anything more ambitious. Like, don't go ham right out the gate. lol
Awesome! Thank you!
This is really nice for me to see how you work, people like me who just started can learn a lot. 💚
Brilliant, excellent instruction and images.
Many thanks!
Excellent images/tips! Lovely model; she's not a beginner anymore!
Indeed!
I enjoyed this video. I got a lot from it. I look forward to the new channel.
Really enjoyed your new approach. I learned a great deal watching you work with your client. And it was fascinating how I could see her relax until she connected with her inner confidence. The actual words and gestures are invaluable to learn. Thank you
Awesome, thank you!
I can't wait to see more of your studio work!
More to come!
This is fantastic and very useful (although your videos always) and am very much looking forward to the new channel.
Thank you!
Thank you
Fantastic!
Thank you for the lesson Alex. I really love it !
My pleasure!
Thanks a lot for sharing this. It's extremely helpful. Some models are immediately confident and inspired and some others really need help to relax in front of the camera.
Very helpful!!! Thank you Alex!
Thank you for watching
This makes me want to get back into the studio! I've not shot in about seven years and watching this recaptured that feeling.
More of you working please
Thank you
Very interesting. Looking forward to seeing more.
Awesome, thank you!
Amazing!!!!
Great to see you at work and how you get emotion from your model , looking forward to more off this type off tutorial.
Awesome, thank you!
Love this video hope you do more
Hey hey! Fantastic! She's gorgeous, and it was really interesting to see how you posed her and got her to warm up. Will you talk about your shadows and why you chose them? I love the soft transitions, that still show her bone structure and shape without being hard.
Awesome! Love your content.
Thank you
Basic and not overly technical light setup (does not have to be)... The dealbreaker that made this interesting was following your thinking-pattern + how you guide the person... I enjoyed it big time, and I hope I will see more stuff like this in the future.
Look forward to the new channel 👍
Superb work Alex. This is a great photography educational video. Excellent.
Many thanks!
That was really interesting. Thanks Alex for sharing . I love your videos but this was quite different and I liked how you put your model at ease.
My pleasure!
Killer video - thanks for sharing your tips!
Hi Alex, amazing! This is great. I love the channel and as a new photographer I am learning so much. Thank you so much for all the amazing videos and practical real world advice, my confidence levels are bursting since subscribing to your channel. Your passion for photography is so inspiring. Defiantly the best photography channel on youtube. Thank you.
My pleasure!
Howzit, howzit! Thanks for a great video - I've always been a lot more confident photographing rocks and trees and leaves but I'm feeling inspired and confident now to journey towards portraiture. Thank you again!
Great to hear!
That was really nice!
Thanks!
I like it and want more!
Cracking job by both sitter and snapper. So honest and helpful. Where's the link to part two?
This was a really good show.
Very nice episode.
Thank you
"You've got a lovely long neck" that was sooo funny!
Love these more practical looks into your photo work. Really interesting to see and learned a lot. Thanks Alex!
PS. You've inspired some of the content on my channel (or that will soon be on it)
Thanks so much!
This was terrific. You could make 500 move videos of this type, and I'd watch every one.
Awesome! I'll hold you to that :D
Love everything you do Alex in terms of content on UA-cam. My all time fav channel by far. Curious to know what focal you use for portrait at this distance from your subject and what makes you choose it. Many thanks and to many more years of The Photographic Eye!!
This was all 50mm. It's not ideal for getting in a bit tighter with head and shoulder images, but it fits my approach for half body portraits.
Top stuff thanks
This is fabulous. So glad you are starting a new channel like this. Given that her outfit isn’t very flattering but she has pleasant facial features , do you do an assessment of those kinds of things? Everything came together by that last shot. 👍
The outfit she was wearing wasn't anything we decided on, just what she was wearing when she arrived.
Usually I would ask them to wear specific things, or supply outfits, however in this case because she was nervous, I thought it would be great to film a 'warm up' before jumping into styling.
Just discovered you on a recommendation from a friend. Really like your videos. Would love more on how to work with models/clients. Also, no link in the video when you point up.
Excellent
those thumbs-hooked-in-pockets frames are fierce!
Great job, excited for the the new channel. Thank you.
yes!.. at last.. the sort of stuff I shoot , not abstract corners of the rooms and shadows etc.
great video
Thanks!
Nice variation!
Thanks!
Nice tutorial, more please
She does not need to feel unconfident she did very well 😎
Fantastic tutorial and I look forward to more. Combining my technical background with an introverted personality means I need to develop *my* confidence to bring out the sitter's confidence as you have done here. Also some really good pointers on posing, again something I lack. Refer to previous point, I think.
One question: In a few of the shots you have cut off things like elbows. Should one avoid this if possible, or does concentrating on the face make this irrelevant?
You won't believe this, but I was/am a shy person. I sort of seeing like I have a screen/photography persona which helps me. Also not fussing about technical parts helps me concentrate on building rapport.
When it comes to 'rules' in portraiture - depends who you're photographing for.
Yourself - do what you want
A competition - you'll have to be aware of the things judges would mark you down for (cropping, truncated limbs etc etc)
The only two 'rules' I kind of abide by are:
legs crossed so as they go out of frame, they taper inwards not outwards (tapering inwards suggests the legs getting slimmer, outwards suggests thicker)
Involve the sitter as much as possible in the process!
where is the second section of this shoot???? :D no link in the video
Your long experience in portraiture shows. You are very good at this. I was impressed that you mentioned to never touch the model. I used to photograph nudes, and my number one rule was “Don’t touch the model.”
Thanks :D
This is perfect and timely as I'm just starting learning about portraiture. Question: What are your thoughts about continuous light vs. flash for shots like this?
Let me give you a tip.
Flash has more consistent light spectrum than many cheap continuous lights. If you want to work with small aperture, flash can deliver a lot of light before your subject will squint.
However if you can get quality light, and you are OK with higher ISO and larger aperture, it is good to see exactly how does it look before you press the shutter. Also your subject is not going to get too tired from powerful strobes.
Either way don't be afraid to lift ISO to 200 or 400. Noise is really negligible and you will blast twice or 4 times less light into your subject's eyes.
@@Roman_4x5 Thank-you!! I've only experimented with natural light along with a reflector so far. Lots to learn!! Have a great weekend!
Even professional models are scared to take photos without makeup. I think her confidence would increase tremendously if a pro make up artist would show her what a difference it would make. She has a lovely face, full of character.
You’re right, she has a lovely face.
Excellent, thank you Alex!
Just wondering, how did you get from "I can help you relax," to "It's just you and me and the Internet...?"
Thanks for watching - by making a point that we're shooting video I'm acknowledging that aspect. Dismissing it in a jokey way IMHO deflates its presence in the room.
Its early, I hope that explanation makes sense?
Dengan cara mengikuti channel ini saya bisa menambah ilmu pengetahuan yang belum pernah saya lakukan. 👍
Thanks for watching
Waiting patiently for your portrait channel :) I have a question, you appear to only have one light but her shadowed area is not in darkness. Did you expose for some ambient, or lift the shadows in post, maybe its just bounced light or something else? Great video though, makes me look forward to the channel even more :)
There is spill from the Portalite onto the background. that's where the light is coming from. Generally speaking I don't light my backgrounds at all. Most of my studios have been small spaces, so having loads of lights in there isn't great. Making one light play two roles works a treat for me.
@@ThePhotographicEye thank-you. I suspected something like that but wasn't sure!
Oh cant wait to see more of these kind of videos. When is the new channel launching? Can't wait!
Great job, I love the gradual progression. I do love the previous format as well. Maybe a mix of both talks & practical?
This will be for a new channel where I will discuss both the techincal aspects of studio portraits, and then videos where it's put into practice (much like this one)
Could you show your editing process?
On the new channel I'll jump in a bit more with this.
@@ThePhotographicEye what channel is that
informative 16mins.
“looking at the camera vs looking through the camera”
Pls tell me difference between… 😅
if you look at the camera you are looking at something near. if you look through the camera you are looking in the same direction but you are looking far away. try to look at the screen and then try to look behind your screen, through your screen. feel the muscles of your eyes moving. It changes and intensifies your expression.
@@massimob4054 Thx! I got it!! 🙏🏻
Alex is talking all the time. Interesting, I noticed in my portrait sessions, that talking is important.
I think the shot of Leah wearing the corset is a little awkward.
It's as if the photographer has an aversion to photographing hands, so he must have no hands visible.
I like hands.
It's cropped for the thumbnail - the later videos feature a lot of hands :D
She has only two, I hope.
😆
Gr8 add to your channel
It is kind of waw session.
