This is the most enlightening channel I subscribe to. While I’m most interested in nature photography, the images and your challenges as to how to look at the images are most instructive even though they may be cityscapes or some abstract shots. It helps me see. Many thanks to you. I’m thinking about my compositions differently and that is a very good thing.
Just found out about this channel via the UA-cam algorithm. Can’t thank that robot enough, what a great channel this is. I did four years of photographic design so the practical and theoretical stuff is somewhere in my head. But your style of explaining is soothing and gets me motivated to go out and shoot and try stuff. Very enlightening to say the least.
This channel is the numberphile of photography
Is it weird that I find your videos not only valuable but also therapeutic?
Once again such a good, and well presented subject. A pity I've missed the chat. Wish you a wonderful evening.
I heard someone say once, and they were speaking about composition in painting but the same holds true for photography or any form of created image. "Good composition is the ability to make the viewers eyes dance with the image." It's what leads the viewer through the image and how they ultimately read the story you are trying to tell. I thought that was really quite beautiful.
As a lifer, I have watched just about all your videos, and you are a credit to us all. This video in particular is outstanding. I reckon you should team up with a good publisher to illustrate and write your own books. You look happy.
As Ken Rockwell says: Feel, Ask, Refine, & Take, and always remember to Simplify & EXclude.
Your channel is most probably one of the most useful from a photography, learning and artistic "démarche" standpoint. Thank you for this work. It's making me rediscover photography.
I've watched this video wire-to-wire many times and it never gets old.
I went straight out and took a couple of photos just isolating the subject and found that switching back to full field vision momentarily overwhelming. This video is my lesson plan for the next few months. Thanks Alex.
I've watched a bunch of videos on composition and yours was an excellent summary of the various exercises one can play around with when learning to compose better. Examples were stellar, loved many of them. Thank you!
Wow great what a great teacher you are
Michael Kenna's work gives me great visual pleasure. Their atmospheric simplicity very often just takes my breath away.
Yes, I very much enjoy his photography too. I was going to include him here, but found this great collection by photographers who aren't well known and decided to give them a platform.
@@ThePhotographicEye Yes, certainly I can't see anything wrong in publicising lesser-known talents.
Thanks Alex! My favourite "minimalistic" photographer is Jason M Peterson. He shoots amazing compositions, usally with his iphone.
Writing down tips. Every one of your videos, is a master class to me. Many thanks from Venezuela. 👍🏼
Superb video again Alex , many thanks 🙏
You know you are close to perfection when there is nothing else to subtract
As a beginner in photography, your videos are platinum for me,thx lots!!!
Thank Youuu sir, i appreciate you sharing your knowledge with everyone. Especially that you really KNOW stuff rather than those that just make videos for the hell of it
Just found my image at 8:15 Min. and fell in love with your channel ;) Thanks a lot for the small feature!
Thanks for taking the time to produce these videos.
At a time when my motivation is taking a dip, these videos help a lot.
Nice! This video went into my favorites instantly!
My favorite minimalist photographer is me 😇😊
I was amused with the Timo Lemmetti moo picture since I did a photo very similar to it few weeks ago, which is my Facebook cover.
Thanks for the lesson! I really enjoyed this tour of minimal composition. Very inspiring!
Perfect explanation and examples of minimalist photography. Thanks.
amazing composition explanation vide! the best I have ever seen!!
Such a joy this video was to me. Great examples of how to incorporate composition techniques .A few of my favorite photographers, which use minimalism in their work are Franco Fontana, Francesco Sembolini, and Allan Schaller.
Your illustrative photos are so well-chosen! Thank you for sharing your findings with us.
This vid is giving me so many ideas. I'm glad I found your channel!
An excellent refresher on many of the aspects of composition. Thank you!
This was a really great video, thank you for sharing! Going to link it from my photo blog :)
Love seeing these examples, this just helped me realise my favorite type of photography is minimalist photography
Excellent video and love the images selected to illustrate the subject
Very helpful video! Very well spoken and described. I actually had a couple of good ideas while watching it! Thanks for your videos and inspiration, Alex. James.
Love your videos but this has to be my favourite one. Love the examples.
This is one of the most amazing videos on composition I have ever seen on UA-cam. Way to go, Alex! ❤️ From Brazil man
Thank you so much for sharing!!!
I love this....I love composition

Helpful perspectives
Hello Alex, great video, always very interesting, all the best, keep them coming.
I had to watch this one several times. You make some very deep points, and are very unique compared to other photographic channel producers. It is an example for all of us, because you are not afraid to approach it from a different angle than everybody else. And this makes your channel one that we can turn to if we don't want to hear about gear. Thanks so much.
Your video inspired me to pick up my camera and photograph my apartment. Any video that causes me to just make images is a wonderful video indeed. Thank you.
Very nice. One of your best.
I really enjoyed the photography you showcased in this video. Fresh and creative images. Also appreciated your comment about it feeling right. That feeling and being caught up in the viewfinder why I love photography.
very helpful ! thanks !
Very inspirational and I plan to expand my composition skills in the upcoming New Year 2022! Nice, very nice to view so many female photographer's work and the ones who caught me eye were: Adrian Kathleen, Vicky martin and Sara Ailler....thanks for the subject and encouragement. Love your channel! Susie from Athens, Ohio
Sir, nicely explained with absolutely subtle pieces of examplary photos. Undoubtedly motivated.
Every time I watch one of your videos I find new angles that I just never thought of before. That is why I will always be a so-so photographer. I like the "doing"... I just don't get results that make a person want to look at it a little longer.
Stunningly beautiful images and wonderful and easy to understand concept of composition which plays and important role in photography.I always love your channel. Please keep up the good work.Wishing you all the best and a big thank you.
Alex, you are a natural teacher, in the true sense of both words. Thanks for this wonderful exposition of the topic!
I’m always looking forward to your videos and you never disappoint, a true photography channel, excellent work. Be well and stay safe.
Absolutely excellent video - very inspirational….I’ve “bought you a coffee” :- )
Great video as always
Best video ive watched on photography so simple to understand and very well explained.. thank you. Subscribed..look forward to going throught the rest of your videos..
Your explanations make me a better photographer…Thank you
Brilliant- I’m going to try this philosophy when nxt in Glencoe.
I recently discovered your channel and have been enjoying the insights into photography you share. I just realised watching this one that I don't think I've ever seen one of your own photos in a video. I'd love a video dedicated to your work and where your inspiration took you.
One of the best videos I’ve seen on this channel, followed closely by an older video you did on minimalist photography!
Really enjoy your videos
excelent ,wonderful , tanks
Thank you
Inspiring. I’ve been looking for some new ideas to get back into photography again after a few months break. This might be a good kick off.
A refreshing and thoughtful take on the art of photography. I appreciate your insight and you sharing it. Thank you.
I really enjoy minimalist images. They’re peaceful to me.
Some of my favorite images from this video…
6:04 I love the powerful contrast in that image. That building almost punches you in the face.
7:50 There’s a feminine quality to those lamp shades on the posts.
8:19 I’m a sucker for lines of carts. I notice them all the time when I’m out and want to photograph them… and sometimes do.
For me this is your best video yet and the examples are terrific. The use of colours of the different surfaces and light/shadows shining through a steel fence/gate in particular struck a chord with me as did the lone figure image taken at night. There is something about coloured planes in photographs that I find particularly intriguing.
Thank you - Excellent image selection for your examples. wonderful content- UA-cam needs more content like this instead of gear reviews.
excellent and thank you so much for reminding me of how much I like minimalism my only addition I would recommend is addition of the concept of abstraction in photography
Good one. I especially appreciate the simplicity of a voice not encumbered by background noise, or what some people would call music.
Amazing video, Alex. You have really rekindled my passion for photography with your videos
I stated to bypass the section on color as I am strictly a b&w photographer. Everything I print or show online is monochromatic. It is just my preference. But as the color segment started, I suddenly realized that I look at colors and decide what a particular filter (red, blue, green, etc.) will do to the gray tones of the image. For example, if I take a shot with a lot of blue sky do I want that sky as a medium tone or add a blue filter to lighten the sky or a red filter to darken it. Thanks for waking me up to what I have been doing intuitively as I edit.
Danke!
Come do a picture day! lol.
Once again, Alex, you've informed and inspired. As for minimalist photographers, I'm profoundly affected by the work of Fan Ho. But there are soooo many brilliant minimalist photo artists these days. The genre seems to have enjoyed a renaissance on Instagram, for example. I love experimenting with it because in many ways it feels like a "purer" expression of an image. Rather like a poem might be considered a more refined/distilled version of a novel....
beautiful video
Great Video and I love your channel its very helpful, Thank you so much.
I have never really thought about minimalist photography before now. Interesting subject. Thank you.
I'm an ex Adland art director and now a retired bloke that does photography.. your videos are excellent.Keep up the good work .
Great video friend!
I really enjoy your thoughtful content. Thanks for the time you spend sharing your knowledge and passion for photography. Best wishes from a fellow youtuber! 😀👍
Thanks for another interesting video! I will definitely look around my home trying to make mundane things look interesting. In this weather, there's not much else I can do anyway :)
I have a question though. In my humble experience, I noticed that, apart from knowing about leading lines and stuff, there seems to be something more elusive, which makes a photo great or boring: presence of emotion, or what Roland Barthes called "the punctum". In other words, they way I understand it: if a photographer does not feel anything towards the thing or person s/he is taking photos of, that will be felt in the photos, leaving the viewer equally indifferent. I'd love to hear what you think of it.
