i've read a lot of comments online about people strongly discouraging future NPs from entering the field without any RN experience. how do you feel about that, and how do you remain confident in your studies while knowing that that's a common opinion? it's definitely confusing me because i know i don't want to work as an RN first. the jobs seem vastly different.
Hi Brittany , Thank you for watching my video. This is a question a lot of direct entry prospective students have and you are not the only one. A lot of people who are career changers and have had work experience are generally accepted to programs like this. Work experience (in a hospital) is definitely something that these programs look at so that you can prove these programs that you have clear understanding of the role of nursing at the bedside and APRN. Compared to a regular nursing rn program, a lot of programs like this give you more clinical hours. I started my clinicals day one of the program I am currently in and within the past semester I have learned a lot. I am very confident in my health assessment skills (which is slightly advanced) because I have practiced it over and over again on patients and my peers. By the end of the semester we had already learned to start IVs even though most of us didn't exactly do it on a real patient. With such programs it is important to make sure that you are attending an accredited university which is known for their program and for the clinical hours (mine gives over 800 clinical hours). I feel very confident that my university has allowed me to learn a lot in a smaller classroom setting and have been paying attention to my needs as well. With regards to your concern about having RN experience before working..People graduating from such programs have not had trouble finding employment as an APRN. It also depends on your speciality for example with a primary care speciality like family , adult-gero the RN experience is not considered as important as it is with like Acute Care. This however is also dependent on the state. Some other schools let you specialize in Acute Care without taking a break (mine doesn't). You should checkout midlevelu and she is a direct entry MSN graduate from Vanderbilt and she talks about all these "controversies" that people bring up with advanced nursing. She graduated with family and wanted to work as an ER nurse practioner however she wasn't able to do it right away however she was immediately hired by an Urgent Clinic. Its Apa thank you so much for responding! i’ll definitely check her blog out. so i have another question, i’m graduating with my nutritional sciences bachelor’s (just changed career path) in a few months without much hospital experience besides volunteering in one (i’ll be volunteering in a patient care unit soon) or a whole lot of shadowing. would you advise me to take a year off to work in a hospital? i’m slightly against it because i already know i want advanced training and would like to get it started as soon as possible. would love your opinion on this :)
@@brittanyedwards8862 I totally understand where you are coming from because I took a semester off and I was not really happy about it. It completely threw me off and then moving and starting school in an unknown large city after taking a break was not the best for me. I think this is totally going to depend on the school you are applying to. Some schools are very strict about their applicants having clinical experience like doing invasive things and others don't. I don't think my program cares as much about clinical experience because there are people who were fresh out of undergrad got interviewed. I did however get rejected from a school and idk what the reasoning was really and i was starting to think that it was to do with my clinical experience. They said that there was an overflow of applications that year but honestly it doesn't matter at this point. One thing which I have definitely learned from my 1st semester in general is that there is always going to be more experienced people and there are always going to be straight A's student. I worked in nutrition too and worked in a hospital. I did not have CNA type experience and a respected school thought that I qualified for an interview. I was intimidated in the beginning but I am not anymore because now we are all at the same level. I constantly remind myself that this is my journey and that I should not be comparing myself to others because everyone learns differently. I learn more in hospitals than I do in lectures and I am telling you I am not the smartest person in the room. I try not to fuss about grades as much because at the end of the day a B average and passing the NCLEX is required for me to continue to specialize into APRN field because I am technically admitted to that program as well.
@@marriedtopettyfer Do you mind sharing what program interviewed people out of undergrad? The last paragraph of what you said really resonated with me because I feel like the feeling of not being as knowledgeable as the RN peers is why a lot of people say that future NPs need to work as RNs first. But reality is, like you said, there's going to be someone smarter and more experienced than me regardless of whether or not I had been an RN for years or a new grad. I'll definitely be doing my research to find what programs fit me more. Thank you for responding, it's so great to be able to talk to someone who is actually doing what I want to be doing soon.
@@brittanyedwards8862 They all interview people who have been out of undergrad. But some are more open to someone who is like a senior or a fresh grad. Many do recommend working for a little bit before applying but I only did it for 6 months honestly. Case Western which is where I go is one of them. Some of my friends are fresh out of college so I would definitely recommend checking their program out. Watch my interview episode I talk a little bit more about details. The others which interviewed people around my age were not all NP focused. I am so happy to help those who are interested in this path ! I had no guidance when I was doing this so I definitely will help out people.

Hello, My name is amber I recently graduated this summer with a degree in health education. I’m currently doing a post bacc program and completing my prerequisites. I was wondering how you prepared for writing your goal statement.
I am not an RN yet but will be taking the NCLEX in the summer of 2020. You do have to have an RN license to be an NP but you do not have to go through traditional schooling of 4 years of BSN nursing in order to be a provider. There are bridge APRN ( NP and other specialties) programs for non-nursing bachelors. In these programs generally the RN phase prepares you take the NCLEX and then you are allowed to move into an APRN or other MSN role.

Hey there ! Sorry for such a late reply. Yes I did stop making these videos but there are many state schools which offer such programs. Ohio State and Indiana University are some which I can think of.
Hi Justine a BSN nurse is a nurse who has a bachelors degree with the credentials RN. They are nurses who work at the bedside or outpatient settings in some case. Depending on your hospital, you might get certifications in ICU or Oncology but do not need to purse a masters degree. With a BSN degree you provide medication to patients which is prescribed by a provider (physician, physician assistant or nurse practioner) and monitor a patient's progress. An MSN (Masters in Nursing )degree is an APRN credential which is usually a Nurse Practioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist and Midwives. They used to have Nurse Anesthetists for MSN but now the laws have changed and are required to have a DNP. Their scope of of practice is very different than someone who has a bachelors degree. Nurse Practioners work alongside physicians to diagnose and treat patients. Clinical Nurse Specialist have some prescription authority and are usually population focus. Midwives deliver babies. Nurse Anesthetists provide anesthesia to patients and are strictly inpatient.They all either have a BSN degree or RN license first before then can go to grad school and have specific licenses for their advanced degree.
Justine Persaud the MSN is just the level of education. You can be a bedside nurse with a Masters (education, clinical nurse leader, nurse executive). Most hospitals don’t necessarily pay more for having a masters, when in the bedside role.

Midwives in US are nurses with advanced training and a lot of them work in hospitals. Some are even certified to be a women's health nurse practitioner. The best thing I can suggest is to contact the school or program itself.
