    I notice Fujifilm really advertises using zone focus in their promotional videos, and after using it more with 3.0, it seems to be much better at getting the subject than eye AF. Regardless, this 3.0 is a nice update!!! Excited to see where the future upgrades go :) Good video!!!

    The impression I got from the XH2s AF was that the hardware was there, but the firmware wasn't. I expected that to be fixed the question was how long was it going to take. I bet within 6 months, the XT5, XH2 and XH2s will achieve parity with Sony and Canon and be better than most everyone else. For video, they are already there, the eye AF is just great.

    Nice to hear because I haven't tried this latest firmware out. I need a longer focal lens like the 70 300mm or the 100 400mm lens.
    If I could take the 100 400mm out all of the time and it not be cumbersome I'm all in.
    This probably is not the case, and I feel like both would be suitable.
    I shoot mostly cityscape bridges in NYC and to be able to bring those bridges closer rather than to drive would be awesome.
    The Hamptons, Montauk Point, Hudson Valley, The Pocono mountain, Delaware Water Gap, as well as my vacations, are why I need a long zoom.

    Fuji Rumors said that the 3.0 update vastly improved hit rates for the XH2S. 61% at 40fps, but at 20fps the hit rate is 95%. The test results are posted on Fuji Rumors. Try shooting at 20fps and see what you all get. If this is true the XH2S is now a beast.

    Hey Jerred, thanks for doing this. A couple of things;
    1) I don't think the AF.C settings for things like Tracking Sensitivity, Speed Tracking Sensitivity and Zone Area Switching will have much bearing on things like the Subject Detection system for being 'rude' and jumping off the thing you're focused on and onto something else. Without having direct experience in this, for other systems all these AF.C settings were based around the idea of tracking a bird as it goes behind branches or twigs, (so that the AF doesn't quickly update to foreground woodland context etc), and instead 'chills out' and keeps focus where it was last had even though it technically doesn't have any particular point of focus currently, and waits until you're out of the branches and twigs and have reacquired the bird (so the AF.C hunting is limited and is in the general ball park to pick back up from where it was easily again). Basically it is making AF.C slow to continually update... which... would go against some scenarios like trying to capture a bird coming towards you from a pond or whatever (no foreground barriers), where you actually DO want AF.C to continually update and reacquire focus as much as possible to improve the keeper rate during this burst.
    Now... you may have found a small 'hack' of sorts in that telling the AF.C to not chill a little might settle the subject detection from moving quickly onto another subject in the frame, but essentially the two things are separate I believe. This is why its not a bad idea to set up a couple of Custom User Modes with different AF.C configs for different wildlife moments. A set up for a single bird in a pond would benefit from different AF.C settings compared to trying to keep focus on a bird in a tree with trees and branches between you and it. Being able to twist that Custom mode dial from one config to another should really assist in keeper rates.
    In regards to Subject Detection, we have the same issue with a person in a crowd, you can focus on them but at some point the subject detection decides to bugger off and choose a new person, it is very frustrating.
    What is interesting is that it feels like such an EASY fix for any camera system to adopt. When we release the shutter button (or BBF), then let that be a sign for the system to scan for different subjects in the frame, give us that white box, let it sit for a couple of seconds on a subject before moving onto a new subject (or nudge the joystick to tell the subject detection to move to someone else). But once we ENGAGE the AF (turn that white box to green) either via half press of the shutter or using BBF then this should kill the AI subject detection from continually scanning the scene for other new subjects, we have chosen the subject, now lets keep the attention on this one.
    Sony systems feel like they do this, you can choose a basketball player on the court, half press the shutter button and it sticks on that one person and doesn't bother hunting for anyone else till the release of that shutter button. We're not needing better AI/Subject Detection, we just need better IMPLEMENTATION. It feels like such an easy code change to make. If this approach somehow wouldn't work for some users then even a simple new setting entry would suffice;
    Restrict Subject Detection Scanning when AF engaged - On/Off
    2) ES mode is apparently better for this kind of stuff. 20fps or 30fps should yield a better percentage keeper rate per second. So imagine if you're using 8fps mechanical vs 30fps ES, then of that 1 second with 8fps, you might get 4 in focus and 4 out, thus a 50% keeper rate per second, but with ES mode, because it is so fast the synchronisation of the split second focus acquisition won't be such an issue, it'll miss the shots the same as 8fps missed, but then also have the shots that preceded losing focus (and after once it reacquired) to make up for it. So I believe this was tested already against other systems. Sony might have a higher percentage of shots in focus per second, but because we can shoot MORE shots per second we actually end up with more images in focus per second vs other brands. More culling but at least more shots to choose from in focus.
    I was hesitant to upgrade from the XT4 to XH2S, this f/w update has convinced me enough that this AF upgrade is now worth the price of upgrading.

      LOL, I told you so... 🙂 Hardware's there, firmware needed updating.

    • @SummersSnaps
      @SummersSnaps Рік тому

      @@EdwardMartinsPhotography Actually... our conversations have really been centered around resolution and not AF performance, and I find it interesting that this f/w release has been specific to the XH2S (the one I have always had my eye on the most) and not generic to encompass all three recent body releases. My guess is that what applies here cannot automatically apply to the other two X Trans 5 bodies (because they likely can't cope). Fingers crossed they also get a boost in AF because daily I am seeing more and more reports of disappointed XT5/XH2 owners. What is interesting is some are replacing their new XH2/XT5 bodies with another one from the store and reporting that their later serial body version is not exhibiting the same AF problem as the earlier serial production units they had before, so perhaps some support to the idea that the QC or lemon theory is actually there...
      I quote from a post from a Marta Franco 15hrs ago;
      "Being one of the several people who complained about the X-T5 AF issues, I would like to say that there is hope. I've returned the camera and tried a new one, which is as perfect as my old X-T4. Life is good again😁... The old camera had a very low serial number, the new one is a bit newer; the first was bought in a local store, the other online but apart from that, I can see no difference. Maybe it was just a lemon."
      Do note they said 'as good as XT4', I do feel the actual hit rate of the XT4 is higher in many instances compared to some of the submissions that I am seeing from XH2/XT5 owners :S
      Anyway, this AF boost for the XH2 is welcomed, it probably should have been there from the get go and it's not ideal (as per my points in my post above), but recently I had such a shocking experience with the Face/Eye Detection with my XT4 (being ridiculous stubborn to detect a face in plain sight and posing for me!) that I was about to throw the camera against the wall! I did not ditch superior IQ and dynamic range of the K-1 for mediocre AF improvements, I want a damn camera that has competent AF for the EASIEST of scenarios at least, and finally this XH2S looks to being at least capable in this regard. Yes I could go Canikony but I do enjoy Fuji's colours and SOOCness and have acquired my lenses that I just want 2023 to be EASIER for me. Fingers crossed the XH2S fulfills this.
      I shall head into Sydney and go to Fuji HQ and have a play with it 3.00 on their XH2S soon and make my decision then.

    • @EdwardMartinsPhotography
      @EdwardMartinsPhotography Рік тому +1

      @@SummersSnaps I'm pretty confident that the AF improvements will also come to the XT5 and XH2. And I say that because those two cameras are Sony level AF right now for video. So as I've said the hardware is there for stills AF, the firmware needs to be tweaked.
      Maybe there was a quality control issue in the first batch. The first few off the assembly line are the most likely to have issues for any product.

    • @SummersSnaps
      @SummersSnaps Рік тому

      @@EdwardMartinsPhotography I'm sure they'll get a f/w update and it will be improved. You and I do seem to have different needs, your landscape work where 40mp will be appreciated better, can use tripod and AF isn't even a huge concern makes sense why you've went XH2/XT5 camp. (side note, have you tried pixelshifting yet?).
      I still feel on an AF mission. I have enjoyed 80% of the AF perks the XT4 have brought me (for sure coming from Pentax my keeper rate is far far higher!), but there is still a part of me feeling like I want more, should expect more. I will admit that I have high standards, I still think systems should be smart enough that when I lock focus on a bride coming down the aisle or that when someone gets out of the crowd and comes up for an award/acceptance speech then the AF stays ON HER and doesn't flit elsewhere... but I can accept in instances like that it's maybe asking a bit much from Fuji and so more generic AF choices might be better (single AF point, move with joystick or just use the Wide Tracking AF.C mode etc).
      But what happened recently really knocked me. Formal sessions for paid work, XF50/2 and XF90/2 (supposedly great AF glass!) and the face/eye detection under suitable non contrasty/plenty of light environments just refused to kick in and detect the person standing right in front of me and was clearly in the focus plane... the box was just super stubborn to appear and that was quite flabbergasting lol. I had never experience that level of annoyance in the 2yrs with the XT4 but it was enough to make me think about bailing out of it. My research told me to be very cautious, even Jerred's video showing some disappointing results with the XT5 and XH2 in this regard but the XH2S doesn't seem to attract the same amount of heat. I think PASM suits me more as well so an XH2S for me in 2023 is looking likely (and before my XT4 devalues too much)...

    • @EdwardMartinsPhotography
      @EdwardMartinsPhotography Рік тому

      @@SummersSnaps I shot weddings with a manual focus Pentax 645 for years. I still shoot my weddings in Manual focus for most of the important shots. Bride coming down the isle: 23mm, set for 10 feet, F8, done. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot any wedding or event with an XT5, XH2 or any other modern camera. Heck I would shoot the whole thing on manual focus and not even use the AF on a bet...
      The XT4 always seemed somewhat underwhelming to me in terms of processing power. It doesn't surprise me at all that the computer went on vacation for a while. The ones I had would do the same thing but I mostly saw it in auto exposure during video. The XT4 was a manual camera for me all around.
      I am sure the XH2s with the new firmware is going to pretty much be as good as it gets for any brand camera. But there are limits to how far automation can go. If you just have to get the shot, manual is still where it's at in my opinion.

    Well, I do not claim to be a better bird photographer than you, but here are some ideas. Time of day, get out early, try and research where birds are active in your area. Big or biggish glass. Single point continuous type auto focus for older cameras. Two out of three or AV for camera settings. Odd number of birds. Remove distractions from the frame like part of birds. Birds looking a little bit towards you. Do what you can to not be there, almost all wildlife will see you before you see them, but are you a threat? Travel, Winter, and the further North you are means a longer the golden hour. Go out in the morning of the first day after bad weather, everyone is hungry.
