Man as a racer myself these compilations are hard to watch. It's not just the crash. I know it's dangerous but thankfully hill climb is typically slower than circuit racing. It's seeing those years of hard work and passion being crumpled in a matter of milliseconds that really hurts on an emotional level. I've really wanted to do a hill climb, but every time I see these types of videos I'm a bit apprehensive about it.
TBH its probably safer than cruising around on the street- if you stick within your limits then you will be fine(probably best to learn those limits on a track with run offs)... on the street then your only some idiot not paying attention away from having your pride and joy wiped out.
I'm guessing that's why a lot of them are in Saxos and 106, as they're cheap box cars that are easy to modify to a good performance level, and don't cost an arm and leg.
@@Fincher123 The chicanes are to keep the speeds down on the longer straightaways so the cars don't go flying off the side of the road at terminal velocity. Not very unnecessary to a lot of people racers included.
@Dan Danba Yeah.... and those risks seem to be far more likely to happen during a hillclimb. You're racing on a public or rented road. It's typically not a prepped track with runoffs and gravel pits. Usually just trees, Armco, and people to hit.
I'm not from a racing background but I feel like they are not shifting the weight of the car properly and have a heavy right foot, causing heavy under steer or lift off oversteer. I made the same mistakes when I was learning to drive faster through corners (but without such consequences fortunately). When you don't have ABS and you brake late, this is what happens. You can try to come off them sure, but unless you're giving yourself an extra 10 meters of braking room at every corner, you're crashing. It's not a computer game.

Front drives: Watch me turn the wheel at this corner but go straight into the barrier! Rear drives: Watch me go round this corner and continue to go around even though the road is now straight! All Minis: Watch me make a tiny error at this corner... and now this car is totalled.
As a former motor cycle hillclimber i feel many of these lack course knowledge going into bends far to fast and losing control something you dont want to do on two wheels to be succesful you must know every bend and with the longer climbs it can take years to gain that knowledge i think the relative safety of four wheels gives total over confidence to many of these .
At the beginning i didn't was really sure and i had to watch properly for details to understand that is somewhere else and not in provincia di Brescia Road that goes up hill at croce del papa but by the end looks very similar, also i didn't notice any car of Luca Tosini, they build Renault most of the time
If you try this way, the Peugeot 106 is still a popular car. The 106MAXI was cool, and the light weight hatchback is easy to handle and easy to maintain.
Got to give the guys that fit the crash barrier a big round of applause... as genuinely saved many of these crashes from being much worse.... And im impressed with how well the barrier and walls take the hits.. in the uk walls fall apart by looking at them funny... and the Barrier is more for looks than use...
watching this again a bit pissed , its even funnier. i was as young and as crazy once. its a trip down memory lane. keep these clips coming . post crash interviews with the drivers would send me to the undertakers...good work.
I don't know exactly why, but there have been a couple of crashes like that on that section. It's my local hill climb and that happens very often. It's a fast section, sure, but a lot of drivers seem to underestimate the turn. Not like I know anything, I'm not a pilot, just speculation.
how many vehicles need to be destroyed by drivers who cant grasp the reality that when you lock up the brakes, you WILL slide straight into the object your trying to avoid in the first place.its crazy how many drivers disregard the basic principles of mechanical operations.it makes one question why they are in the drivers seat to begin with.hopefully the thousands of dollars of damage will help them realize, a tire must roll to turn a vehicle away from an obstacle.its a very expensive way to learn the basics of driving.
Great video, I like changing the playback speed in UA-cam to 0.25 for some of the crashes to really see the weight transfer issues and a bonus from that is hearing the crowd sounding like something from a horror movie! Awesome to see these old cars from Europe and can't believe I saw a Fiat Ritmo/Strada trying.
“Hill climbing - where 106s and Saxos go to die”. When you dial all the understeer out of a Saxo/ 106, you create a car that will try to kill you with lift-off oversteer. They were pretty viscous as standard unless you’re Jean Ragnotti!
The amount of people who set up at the exit of the corner to film is incredible to me. But from all these years in rally, don't they know that is asking for a racecar to wipe you out?
@@whipdan674 idk, you can see he overshot the corner. the sound of the impact was painful, and after he pulled over you can see the radiator leaking. expensive car too, sad to watch
@@martin1649 1. I know nobody gets hurt because of roll cages. 2. The way they happen seems like the driver just suddenly forgot to drive. 3. The ones that happen at slow speed are particularly funny - like the Law of Physics suddenly stopped working. 😁

4:58 - I would bet he had his FOV set too narrow and motion blur turned off, so he couldn't tell how fast he was going.

Is there a regulation for the rally cars on tire size? Because I swear I didn't see any of the rally cars with anything bigger than like a 255.
Seems like the only requirement to receive a racing sponsor is your driver's permit, which can be obtained from a box of Kellogg's.
