  • Shot in 1998, the aircraft, a Boeing 767-300, registration OE-LAW was picked up by a hand full of Pilots including the owner of the Airline Lauda Air, Niki Lauda, from Dublin, Ireland after a C-Check , to fly to Innsbruck, Austria for touch and go training at this treacherous airport within the Austrian Alps.

    I just found this video and glad i did.
    Niki is a legend.
    From F1 champion to airliner captain who once owned his own airline Lauda Air. You can't ask for more than that..

    I love the scenery, coming over the River Inn to land the alpine views and incredible houses, ski lifts all great stuff. The weather looks coltish and stormy but no snow, so the time of year much have been either October or April would be my guess. Nice video thanks

    Interessting Fact for anyone watching this great Video
    At the 2:14 min mark Niki complains in german "Why is he so slow, that Dog" , moaning about the right engine reaching the needed "24" N2 to open the Fuel Valve so slow, to slow for his feeling.
    The maker of the Video (i guess) in the Background is answering "that they have allready planned to change the right Engine". Nikis says "You gonna change it? it's about Time!, there look (pointing on the N2 mark) because its even Cold and the Engine needs too long for spooling up"
    A good example how deep he was into maintenance of his Fleet/Planes

    Niki Lauda war ein toller Mann..der Absturz seiner Boeing 767 hat ihn schwer getroffen, ihn traf keine Schuld. meine Bewunderung für diesen Österreicher....wenns einen Himmel gibt, sieht er jetzt von oben auf uns runter..

    • @andreaszauner59
      @andreaszauner59 4 роки тому +2

      Direkt am Crash traf ihn zwar keine Schuld aber das betroffene Flugzeug hätte aus anderen gravierenden Wartungsmängeln seit Wochen nicht mehr abheben dürfen! Unter anderem war es sogar bekannt dass die Schubumkehr laut Fehlermeldungen beim betroffenen Triebwerk (engine 1 also links) vorlagen !

    • @francoforte4788
      @francoforte4788 3 роки тому +1

      @@andreaszauner59 Das stimmt so nicht. Es war zwar ein Problem mit der Schubumkehr bekannt, das betraf jedoch die Möglichkeit, dass die Schubumkehr bei einem Triebwerk, bei Landung, nicht aktiviert werden kann.
      Da das bei entsprechender Runway-Länge keine Sicherheitsrelevanz hat, durfte die Maschine auch weiter fliegen.
      Die Möglichkeit, dass die Schubumkehr sich im Flug selbstständig aktiviert, wurde nicht in Betracht gezogen und hatte als Ursache vermutlich eher einen später korrigierten Konstruktionsmangel.
      Hätte das Flugzeug nicht starten dürfen, wäre es nicht gestartet.

    I know the story of his racing career and have one of his books but, the only thing I know about the airline is it existed and got some bad press in a crash. I would like to know more about the airlines and its demise.

    • @rumbumsidum
      @rumbumsidum 10 років тому +6

      the thing was though that the airline got the bad press, but it was found out later that it was actually a design fault of the plane, and all 767 in service wordlwide had to be retrofitted. But yeah, Laudaair got swallowed by austrian Airlines.
      Niki Lauda has another airline (Fly Niki) which is still active, but belongs now to Air Berlin group. there is still a chance that you will fly with niki lauda as captain ;)

      I used to race motorcycles and even though F-1 isn't huge here, he was one of my heroes not just for his driving but for his courage, brains and determination. He is definitely a "never give up" guy. We used to say over here that someone would rather die in the car than finish second. No matter what people think, there were very few. Not point racers. The race they are running is the most important thing they have ever done. I can only think of a handful that I have seen that fit that mold and I have been around 65 years. Jim Clark, A. J. Foyt, Nikki Lauda, A man who raced sprint cars in the 50's and sixties and later cars with cages, Harold Leep, early in his career, Steve Kinser, Sammy Swindell,(sorry not Wolfie), Sorry, not Dale Earnhardt either, Larry Phillips(I saw him ballistic after running 2nd), the late Rich Vogler, and Jan Opperman. I am sure there are others and I am not just naming champions that won lots of races or hot heads but people that when they got in a car, no matter what they were racing, it was like that race was what they had lived their life for and if they settled for second, they considered it a failure. I am sorry but there are three more sprint car drivers I completely forgot. Nobody ever ran harder, with a wing or without. Leland Mc Spadden, Jack Hewitt, and Richard Griffin.

      Thrust reverser deployed inflight (not supposed to, only on the ground) and brought down the aircraft killing everyone onboard. Niki was devastated after the accident.
      This was a design defect of the thrust reverser and nothing to do with Lauda Air's maintenance standards. In aviation even if it is not the fault of the airline, the bad publicity following an accident such as what happened to Lauda Air was enough to bring it's demise. In other words passengers stopped flying with Lauda Air.

    Just wondering, under what callsign were they flying ?
    Since its a private flight for training purposes I would guess they would use their airlines ICAO and a number or just the tail number (as do General Aviation aircraft)

    • @pinballism
      @pinballism 10 років тому +1

      LDA4040 is what I can hear..not 100% sure, but definitely a under Lauda-Callsign. Quite standard in aviation for training flights (airlines usually have some numbers reseverd for trainings flights as they have for maintenance flights, ferry flights, charter flights e.g...).
