This style of documentary is really enjoyable. It's not just about showing flashy images of "cool" racecars, but rather a factual representation of the basic principles involved in high performance / race driving. Much like a training film really. And everything wonderfully narrated by the man himself, Niki Lauda.
James Hunt was a movie star, Niki Lauda was the most skilled, courageous, intelligent and taking no crap from anyone - race driver. His way of pinpointing the truth with laser precision in tv commentaries is legendary. Niki is my hero.
Hell, this is a great video nowadays too. Sure the cars are way different, but there is just a basic, strip down message here. Its explained in a way that anyone could understand. And you obviously have the best doing it.
It is already in the comments, but I want to positively stress it again. A human voice, decent and straightforward wording, great camera and no nerve-racking Pac-Man Casio Boombox 'embellishment' ❤😊. Thankyou
Niki was a total talent. Driving and setting up cars. He also helped implement many safety features for other drivers. One of F1s greatest drivers of all time.
I got to Photograph F1 in Detroit & Montreal in 82, 83, & 84, and met Niki Lauda once, it was so hard walking through the pits for the first time and not be in awe 🤨 F1 in the 80's was a golden time, my cherished photos are of Lauda, Prost, Piquet, and a young upstart name Senna at the Canadian GP in 84 😎
Great video although there were turbo charged engines in the 1977 season provided by Renault. It is also worth remembering that there were supercharged cars back in the 1960's which used a separate gear to power the supercharger which served a similar function to the turbo but at a 20% loss of power. The turbo did not incur that penalty and was why it became of interest to manufacturers who could have their cake and eat it.
Turbo have less losses, but i think they were wrong because a supercharger would made a f1 much more predictable than turbos with its turbo lag. And even mansell said those f1 turbo would burn rubber in 4th gear.
That's definitely going to help me set up my gran turismo cars. Especially with braking setup which was a great tip👏👏👏 😂😂😂 it's funny but I'm being serious 😂✌👍
Not entirely sure about this one, but Lauda talks about 'next year, then I have more experience with the task'. Was this filmed in 85 really? It somehow feels like older quotes. Were there talks where he would be on the grid in 86?
hm Ferdinand Porsche already placed the motor behind the driver and in front of the rear axle in the AutobUnion in the 1930’s -didn‘t he? May be a little too much patrotism inside the comment?
Senna in his Lotus 98T was cool and the Turbo F1 cars of that era sounded so much better , go watch Alain Prost in his Tag Porsche engine F1 car it is amazing noise
I loved these types of information programmes in the 80s - they had a certain style that informs, without being distracting and annoying.

I remember watching this as a kid. Very informative for a young racing fan.

Saw it live, June 24, 1984 Detroit Grand Prix, the day I got hooked on Formula 1.
RIP Niki & James

I'm a big fan of the turbo era but the sound of that late cosworrth DFV that Niki was driving was badass

This is by far the best explanation I've seen for why ground effect skirts were banned.
The one an only Nikki Lauda, the legend, the bravest and smartest!
Yes, yes, yes! Niki ❤
Yess...love Niki💖🌻
Music at 3:34 is by Nick Glennie-Smith,. KPM 1259 album track 1- futurity, you are welcome!

Long life to you, friend.
Thank you for uploading this
This was Awesome . Thanks for sharing this...
Cheers from Southern California 🇺🇸
🎉This is definitely a gem of a documentary if you are into F1
Rip Niki we miss you we will never forget you
Fantastic documentary!
Niki was top notch. He is certainly on the Mt Rushmore of F1 drivers, imo.
Top 5 for sure
But there is no Mt Rushmore of F1 drivers. Just of presidents of the USA.
@@lsudx479 obviously
@@NismoDJ20 Obviously not. This poor fella thought there was a Mt Rushmore of Formula 1 drivers.
@@psykoweaz I don't listen to people who don't use punctuation.
Thanks for uploading this video
Salute, Niki!
love u niki ❤️
This was awesome
When I hear Niki speaking he reminds me of Senna
The F1 car even back then was doing like 120mph through corners , amazing the speed difference even back then to road cars
Reminds me of the stuff you would see on the Open University on BBC2 after midnight, much of it fascinating! Next up: How to survive a Nuclear Blast.
no tire heaters, just cold start and pedal to the metal-Nicki got it!
Many thanks for the upload 👍👍👍👍👍
This was great 😀
Ciao Niki eri unico, coraggioso.. we miss you Niki💖
This is a preview off jeremy clarkson 1999 head to head video race they did.
I love how the Cougar looked, still very modern
Awesome video!! Thanks for sharing!
Love every minute
love how the latest Roll's Royce is the benchmark for good downforce
Great video. Thank you. 👍
Amazing!

Amazing
In a time, where you didn't need a 20 minute computer program to run, before starting the engine and going. Simple, light and fast
In all fairness, the Sierra 1600 was a handful on a greasy roundabout …😂
James Hunt has a black helmet . And is driving the Sierra.
Why are there shots of the Sierra with a while helmeted driver ?
O melhor piloto de fórmula 1 do mundo. Tri campeão

😂😂😂 it's funny but I'm being serious 😂✌👍
twin tower intro hits hard
Auto Union was making rear engine Grand Prix cars before Cooper. It wasn't "Formula 1" persay, but still.
I wish I was alive to see F1 in this era. It's way to much money, rules, stewards, and Max Verstappen these days.

Looks like from 1983 more.

-Niki Lauda Explains Formula One-Video has less than 5 min of Lauda😂
Is like watch a race of F1 in 2024,
V6 ?
That's where clarkson got the idea from.
He’s so fine
hoax, any verstappen fan knows its ridiculous to credit the car, its never the car, its always the driver 😉
😂
hm Ferdinand Porsche already placed the motor behind the driver and in front of the rear axle in the AutobUnion in the 1930’s -didn‘t he? May be a little too much patrotism inside the comment?
Porr-shhh?
Poor - shh- uhhh!
Yeah but Niki… how many girls can you fit in that car?
This was the best decade.
Senna in his Lotus 98T was cool and the Turbo F1 cars of that era sounded so much better , go watch Alain Prost in his Tag Porsche engine F1 car it is amazing noise
Propper drivers and propper cars! I have no interest in f1 now.
Your loss, then, actually!
