    Hi Gord! I've been looking into trying basket illusion and just found your videos! I don't have any of the tools yet, but when I do, I'm going to start with a smaller piece like this!
    Thanks for the awesome tutorial!

    For the burn between the beads, I believe Daniel Vilarino uses a bamboo skewer. It might be faster/easier/better,......I dunno........ Nice project!

    Nice one Gord!! I did a similar one a few weeks ago when practicing with the new pyro kit,even used the same Faber Castell pens. I didn't burn between the beads though,I just used the fine tip on the black pen,still,all good practice!! Take care my friend, Keith.

    Hi Gord! Lovely piece my friend! I have seen some of the work of David Nittmann and considering the size of some of his discs, I cannot help to wonder how long it would had taken to complete them. Looking you work on it gave me a backache :) That said, I think it is worth the effort, the results are brilliant! Cheers! Daniel

    Hi Gord - good tutorial thanks.
    Question -- Is there no need to apply the hot glue to the face also - thanks
    Dennis Beamish Cambridge Ontario Canada

    • @GordonRock1
      @GordonRock1  5 років тому

      Hi Dennis,
      I never use hot glue on the surface if I can use it around the outside of the piece I'm gluing up.
      I don't trust that I will have the same thickness of glue at all points and after going to the trouble of making both surfaces flat I want them to be put together tightly.
      I have never had a hot glue joint come apart. I make sure that the glue is as hot as my glue gun can get it and I use plenty of glue.
      Hope that helps, Dennis. Thanks for watching!

    Very nice Gord. Good thing we do this for fun because you would have to get $1000 dollars for the amount of time you have in it. One question on the face plate. Do you put thin ca on the threads to make them stronger? Thanks
    Scott

    • @GordonRock1
      @GordonRock1  8 років тому

      +Scott Gaber
      LOL! You got that right, Scott. If it wasn't fun this would get tedious very quickly. But then what would we do??? No, I have never used CA glue on the threads as I use hardwoods and can make as many as I want if the threads ever give up. It's cheaper than CA glue is and I enjoy making them.

    Gord, you did well with this project. It came out pretty darn good for a first time. One suggestion I might add is to burn the line between the beads so the paint will not bleed into the next bead. It creates a barrier and also adds to the finished quality. And it looks better in my opinion. Try it for yourself and see what you think. Keep them coming Gord. These videos are wonderful and very helpful to our turning community.

    Excellent video and explanations. Like the speed up on some of the turnings. Suggestion: when you scribe the pencil lines on the piece, could you not go fully across the piece as opposed to scribing on only one side. Seems to me you would save time changing setting on indexing wheel

    I thought segmenting took a lot of patience, wow! I agree, burning the lines between the beads looks much better. I wonder if you could use the pyrography skew tip while the lathe is turning very slowly? I guess it depends on how much the pyrography set costs and how brave you are. ;-) Your method works just fine, but we don't have access to the card stock that you use. Very interesting idea...can't wait to see a full blown project, now that you are a pro at it. By the way...FIRST WITH SOMETHING TO SAY.

      +Gil Grace The minimum speed on Nova DVR lathes is 100rpm ... probably too fast for any pyro burning tip. Suggest laminate counter top samples ... Home Depot will give you all you want if you tell them you are thinking about re-doing your kitchen!

    Done! :) Well done Gord!! always wanted to try a basket weave piece, but man, all that work with the pens... time spent painting is time not spent turning :) but I've done time "wasters" before... I will have to take a deep breath one day, suck it up, and just go for it. Thank you also for the short review about the pens, I will know what to look for now. How about applying a finish over these colors? will the run if I try on a friction or CA finish on them?
    Yuval.

    • @GordonRock1
      @GordonRock1  8 років тому +1

      +Yuval Lahav Woodturning
      I'm glad you got it working, Yuval. No idea why you would have a hard time viewing the video.
      According to the video I watched where I got some information on how to go about this process the colors will not bleed and are color fast so they won't fade over time. The finish he uses is a spray: Krylon Matte Finish. I did not put a finish on the one I did as it was just an experiment. I probably should have and will likely spray it once I pick up some of the Krylon finish. I don't know what to expect if you want to use a friction finish but with all the division's create by burning the lines drawn with the pencil I don't think it would work very well. Then again, I don't know as I haven't tried it.
      Thanks for watching, Yuval, I always appreciate your opinions and suggestions.

    Hi Gord
    I also have a Nova lathe - and curious how the index wheel fastens firm on the chuck or is it the spindle?
    My Nova lathe does have built in indexing, but I find it hard to work with and like the idea of adding this mechanism. As a fellow Canadian I am interested in the cost if you do not mind.
    Thanks

    • @GordonRock1
      @GordonRock1  6 років тому

      Hi Dennis,
      The index wheel slides over the spindle and is held in place by the chuck. I bought mine online from Alisam Engineering. Here is a link to the website:
      www.alisam.com/large-indexing-systems.html
      Sometimes UA-cam screws up links so I hope this gets there okay. If not I'm sure you can translate this:
      www DOT alisam DOT com SLASH large-indexing-systems DOT html
      The prices for the various sizes are listed on that page.
      I bought mine because I'm also not impressed with the indexing system on my DVR-XP. It's the ONLY complaint I have with it though.
      I hope this helps! Have fun with it!

    That was very interesting, Gord. I would have to use a magnifying light to do that nowadays as I do with scrollsaw fretwork. Nice effect, good work, and well presented.
    It seems to me I read/saw/heard that burning the lines between details greatly reduces (if not stops) the flow of inks or dyes into adjacent areas; the caveat being it won't stop a flood, but it does give some breathing room. Maybe I saw that on one of the pyrography sites.
