The bass player is incredible. How does he get a tone like that on an upright live? Really, the musicianship of the entire band is astounding.
The upright base is no doubt mic-ed but even this is not you right it does sound great my favorite instrument. Fell in love with the back yards ago. I think it was Ron now it was Ron Carter, but it was Ray Brown the first upright bass player I can remember and I took note.
I cried my soul out of my eyes hearing this performance♥️♥️♥️…what an artist! He knows how to feel & how to bring his feelings into music & into the hearts of others.

Yes, superb singer and how soulful! It's become rare with younger men singing jazz/blues on this level but Gregory is right up there with earlier heroes like Isaac Hayes or Muddy Waters.

It’s not any easier to articulate just what Gregory Porter’s mastery and delivery of his gifts are any more than Luther. But that’s ok. We simply bask in gratitude for the joy they bring our souls.
I disagree. I am still a fan of Luther's, and I am a fan of Gregory, for always. Their talents and selves are individuals. The only way an artist should be compared to one another, is in contrast. So they bring out the beauty, in the differences
I’m a Luther fan since I first heard him on background vocals in the late 70’s. He was truly one of a kind. Gregory is a different voice, a different style altogether. The song writing styles are different. It’s totally fine to love and appreciate both men without comparing them and choosing one or the other. It’s all music for the soul. Peace and blessings
