TUTORIAL: Finding / Applying Widescreen Patches for PCSX2

- For non portable installations the cheats folder is in Documents\PCSX2.
Widescreen fixes are applied in the "cheats_ws" folder found here.

* Also I dont know how important it is but i renamed my Rom for kingdom hearts to be the same as the folder that i got the .pnach out of. *
The folder in the PS2 Widescreen Pack is called Kingdom Hearts
My rom was named Kingdom Hearts USA.
Now my rom is renamed to Kingdom Hearts
Don't know how important that is but if its not working, try changing that first. - Ігри

hey this video is years old but wanted to say thanks anyway, it helped me :)
For anyone who tried this I figured out why it wasn't working for me.
The problem was it was looking for the widescreen folder in my documents/PCSX2 not the program files folder where the actual program is stored.
When you get out of the game after the widescreen isn't working if you look at the console it will tell you where it is looking for the widescreen hacks.
So anyway what worked for me was I created a cheats_ws folder in the PCSX2 folder in my documents and put the widescreen patch file in there and then when I ran the game it was in widescreen.
So this is the actual answer I'd say to 90% of people's problems.
The older version of PCSX2 could be looking in my documents not where the actual program pcsx2 is stored.

I don't know why it only worked for one game (Shadow of Memories). I tried the same with toher game (Project Zero 3, Clock Tower 3, Persona 3 FES) and didn't work.

Would you know how to fix the weird blinking/ change aspect ratio in the cutscenes to KH final mix? I believe im using a specific build someone made, just wanted to fix that part tho.
It doesn't work on the PAL version of kh 1, if there is multiple pnatch files in the folder do I have to put them all in the cheats folder ?

any insight on your plugin specs? the patch worked, changed the internal resolution and enabled fxaa and 3d looks sweet, but i'm having a hard time finding good settings for the 2d menus. thanks for the tutorial btw
My problem is, I made a cheats folder and it created a file in there, I put the cheats in there but it doesn't apply anything seemingly when I run the game. And when I click edit cheats, it opens the cheats text properly, but if I click reload then it says no patches were found or enabled

Do you still need to do this 16:9 Widescreen Patches guide on the Nightly Built of PCSX2 as of May 2024? I heard now the nightly built automatically detects whether the game is in 16:9 format. Please correct me if I'm wrong

Hey dude does this only work on a 16:9 aspect ratio or can you achieve widescreen in 21:9 (3440x1440) resolution as well?

This didn't seem to work for me with sly 2, screen is still blurry, running pcsx2 1.4 version, does that have anything to do with it?
Just curious why you say to make sure “enable cheats” is enabled? You have to enable cheats in order to enable widescreen patches? I’m on Steam Deck.

why isn't there a ws patch for dragon quest 8... is there an updated patch list
Ugh, opening, title screen and similar pre-rendered things looks bad on P3 FES, but in-game it seems somewhat different. I really don't know if I want to keep it or not lol.
I downloaded the widescreen patch and stuck it in my cheats folder, but when I load up the game, the console says that there were no cheats found. I'm using an undub version of Tales of the Abyss and the console shows the disc region is simply NTSC and nothing else after that, and the patch that I'm using is NTSC-U.
I just also tried the widescreen patch on another game, still doesn't work :/. I'm literally following every single step in this video and even the one in the description where changing the name of the iso as the same name as the folder that had the patch in, and it still does nothing. Got any ideas?

sounds like the patch isnt being applied properly, read the description of the video and see if that helps out
Everything is fine now. It wasn't really a big deal to begin with. The one thing I find annoying is the screen tearing. Is there anyway to get rid of it?

Patches work as intended. I really like the perks from the widescreen patches for the Persona games. :)
I wouldn't mind if there was a guide to modify the pnach files manually for non-standard aspect ratios. I don't really know code, but I would love to play a few of my PS2 games on a 2.35:1 screen if that is possible.
THE FOLDER "CHEATS_WS" IS FOR THE RESOLUTION?

Does Native have an impact on this whatsoever? Because I wasn't able to play on 1920x1080 when I didn't have it set to custom. I then switched to x5 Native. Is this how you did it?
my emulator has a cheats and cheats_ws folder, should the widescreen patches go in cheats_ws or in the cheats folder?
widescreen cheats go in Cheats_ws, this is outdated video pcsx2 has updated and added cheats widescreen folder for some time now

I don't understand at that moment where you talk about these ( NTSC-K NTSC-U NTSC-J ) what do I have to do with them?

those are each different regions, your game rom is specific to a region, typically from my experience that has been NTSC-U or PAL unless its a Japanese game then its been NTSC-J.
Really though just try the U one first and if it doesn't work try one from one of the other folders, the process of elimination does apply here if your not sure.
How did you get it so there are no borders on your game?
did you try following the instructions in the description?

Is there a widescreen patch for Kingdom Hearts Final Mix included? I'm having a hard time searching through the Internet for specifically KH Final Mix.
I did not see one when i was going through but browsing on the forums might help.

Best bet is to make a forum thread or try and find one regarding that specific game. someone might have already asked for it
what if I have a .patch and not .pnach
Hello. I've been playing the .hack games and it looks like some of the background textures dont align with the text usually in the "board" option in the original .hack games infection->quarantine and in the G.U games the background for the "mail" leaves alot of the text hanging off on the left side. Is there a way to fix this? I've looked what feels like everywhere and cant find anything related. Any help would be appreciated.
my best advice with anomalies like this is to ask pcsx2 or the community of pcsx2 by posting on the help forum

on budokai 3 when the round ends and i try to rematch, the screen changes back to default ugly ratio. I have to return to character selection, then play to get the widescreen back. It's not a big deal but quite frustrating when trying to rematch quickly. Is this normal?

Anyone know how to fix this issue in Thrillville - Off The Rails where in the but scenes there is this like black box around it and it blocks some of the screen?
im not familiar with thrillville but most cutscenes from what I have seen are done in 4:3 or something similar and widescreen patches dont normally have an effect on the pre-rendered ones
Bc also in Thrillville off the rails I'm not sure if it is something in my settings but the characters dont have any details and are just completely white
are you sure you have the correct regions selected for the game? if you did every step outlined in the video and desc and it still wont work id recommend you send the guys at pcsx2team a msg

Yes. I renamed the rom file same as the game in PS2 widescreen pack folder. The cheat is detected but the graphic is still poor. I have this message "Impossible blend for D3D: (Cd - Cs) * 64 >> 7 + Cd".

as long as the aspect ratio is 16:9, it doesnt matter what the custom window size is

so i'm very new to pcsx2 and how to use it. i got the patch and went to play gta san andreas and it was giving me the "CDVD failed to open" message. is there anyway to go around that? please get back to me!!
+Officialmikebrodie hey there mike, did you download a ROM for pcsx2? there is a san andreas version of the game for the PC as well id recommend you looking into getting that instead of playing the emulated version on the pcsx2 emulator. unfortunatly i cant officially help you find a torrent online for that game, but I would sooner play the PC version then the PCSX2 ROM version of it on the PC
Adding the patch into the cheats folder did nothing. Enabling Widescreen patches and cheats did nothing. What am I missing, exactly?
You do not need to do this for the latest 1.4 installer version. It's already included in a zip file called cheats_ws.zip. Just check "Enable Widescreen Patches" in the file menu and you're good to go
This doesn't do anything for me. Simply checking "enable widescreen patches" does not work. Neither does the original method described in this video.
Copied the pnach file to "cheats" folder, enabled cheat, set aspect ratio to widescreen 16:9. Done everything but remains the same.

No worries man i fixed it, i was using reboot cdvd(full) before which doesn't seem to want to booth those cheat files. Used reboot cdvd (fast) and the cheats work, thanks for the tutorial... helped greatly when i wasn't fucking up myself lol
is there any atest version of the file knowing the fact that it was released 2011 ago?
If you go to the forum link I have in the description; the Download attached files at the bottom of the page is listed as a 2016 upload. ( the PS2 Widescreen.rar ) that's what you want to download. 11-19-2016 for reference.
Is there any reason not to just put all of the patches for the different games into the cheats folder, or do they need to be placed in only one at a time for the specific game you will be playing?
i dont think that there will be any issue with that, although I have not tried it so I am not sure
pcsx2 1.2.1 has all the patches integrated, so you don't need to download them anymore.

Yes it does, and I do all the time but I have to run Codebreaker before the game I wish to hack and apply the hack, than I change the disc and voilá - widescreen!!! Of course you have to attach the multicomponent cable or S-Video cable, not the original simple cable. Also there is the HDMI converter but I never used it.

Hi. In the latest stable release of PCSX2 (1.4.0) there are two cheat options in the menu. One is particularly for widescreen. Do I only need that cheat option enabled? Also, there are two cheat folders. One is appended with _ws (I presume that's for widescreen). Does it matter which folder the patch is placed in? Thanks for any clarification. :)

I would totally say try just using the cheat, and if that works its fantastic. otherwise try the method I outlined in the video if it is still applicable. and if all else fails you should definitely post a question in the forums on pcsx2.net
+Pedro Lambrini Im not sure if you figured it out yet but i finally figured it out yesterday, you dont put the pnach file in your Program files>PCXS2>Cheats, You put it in the Documents>PCXS2>Cheats, The cheats folder in the program files are irrelevent as far as i know and right when i put it in the documents version, it worked. Tell me if it worked :).

this tutorial is outdated, pcsx2 has now separate cheats_ws folder to apply widescreen patches

if its not present in the same dir as the executable then create it.

Bc sorry for being a noob, I followed all instructions and also used KH1 to test it out but it just seems like it stretched out the screen and doesn't look like 1080p view, maybe Im missing something?
Justin Reyes dont know how important it is but rename your ROM to the same name of which you grabbed the .pnach out of. if the folder was called Kingdom hearts and your rom is called Kingdom Hearts USA. then rename your rom to Kingdom Hearts
if that doesnt work, id say ask the guys at pcsx2

***** for the gameplay I used dxtory, but nowa days I just use open broadcaster at a 20000kbps bitrate for local recording ill do a rundown on my settings for you if you need help setting it up
