Thanks for bringing attention to Alvin Lee 😎 He is one of my favorite guitar players . Thankfully I got to see TYA a few times in the early 70’s and later probably mid 80’s .

Ten Years After's performance of I'm Going Home at Woodstock is one of the greatest Rock performances of all time. EPIC!!!
Jimi who was backstage is quoted as saying Alvin's performance there was best of All -Time.
It all by itself should be enough to get Ten Years After into the R&R HOF.
He had all the bells and wisols of that 50s rockabilly and the contemporary 60 at the same time, epic... What a legend

I've posted at various sites about one of the greatst guitar players of all time. TYA and particulalrly, Alvin Lee did not get not get the recognition they deserved primarily because he did not seek it ... Read Ric Lee's (TYA's Drummer) new Book.. From Comstocks to Woodstock, which is all about him in England & TYA's birth, growth, development, and appearance at Woodstock which was egged on by Bill Graham (Fillmore West and East).. It is Written very well, and Ric emphasizes the point of Alvin's pecular behavior at times. He seemed to be a "difficult" person. Although AL wrote and TYA recorded their only Hit Single (from their LP), "I'd Love To Change The World"... Alvin hated the song because he felt it was Too Poppy... They never played it Live. The song is played as Bumper Music on many many talk radio shows to emphasize the current MESS we are in.... I'd love to Change The World....But I Don't Know What To Do.....So I leave It Up To YOU!!! So now we have Pelosi, Schumer , God Help me for even mentioning her name - AOC, and of course our great leader of the Free World , Biden. R.I. P. Alvin Lee.
Alvin Lee, one of the best and least appreciated greatest guitar players of all time. Joe isn't too bad himself.

Alvin had couple Red 335s.Ive seen a Dot one.Then Woodstock 335 Big Red.Both the dot 335 and Big Red block inlays have the same sticker arrangement.

Alvin Lee's guitar style was a distinct blend of rock-a-billy, blues with jazz phrasing. A very fluent and gifted player. R.I.P
Rockabilly and blues
Rockabilly, blues and volume. I guess if you consider jam improvisation jazz, you could say jazz -- then that would be true for most jam bands of the late sixties until Zeppelin put an end to most of it with more structured songs. But the Dead and Lee's band held on for a long time.
Alvin was big on jazz.
That guitar could not have found a better home or a better guitar master to play it. Two of the best that ever lived, Joe and Alvin.

I was about to post the exact comment you made. Alvin might not have been the greatest player of all time technically, but he was so damn fast. When you can pick a guitar so fast it sounds like you are using a violin bow you are just different than most players.
@@hollywoodjoe123 the fact he is playing it is a sign of respect. You don't have to be fast to be an excellent guitarist and Joe is that. Both use the abilities they were born with to play style suited to them. Not good or bad, just different.

I was fortunate to see Alvin Lee and Ten Years After in Tampa in the early 70’s. They put on such a great show. I’ve been a fan ever since. It broke my heart when I heard he had passed. Such a great guitarist.
Alvin will foever be the GREATEST guitar player ever! He sang to "Big Red" and "Big Red", sang back to him....sorely missed!
Eric clapton made shure he wasnt Touring in the same country when Alvin lee was Lesly west actualy got Some Tips from Alvin when they toured together

I saw Alvin Lee play this guitar at Winterland in 1978. At the Tenth Anniversary celebration for San Jose rock station KSJO, the headliner was Sammy Hagar. Lee was one of the fastest guitarists I ever saw, he was amazing. RIP...

I carried Big Red at the Olympic Auditorium in LA, March 21, 1970, Hitch hiked to LA and got temp. roadie jobs for tickets because we were hanging around early, helped set up stage and unloaded the truck with TYA-s equipment. Carried a guitar case marked "delicate equipment" , we have been following TYA since their first gig at the Fillmore Auditorium playing behind Canned Heat.

That's a little like a guy I know who has a telecaster that is broken all to hell after it ended up at his feet while working as a stage hand during a Who show in New Jersey. He keeps it in a case and it's like opening a coffin to when you raise the lid to look at it.

Saw Alvin blow the roof off the Spectrum in Phila, Pa in 1973 using that very guitar. One of the best shows I've ever seen

There is some amazing spiritual vibes reverberating thru that guitar, most definitely priceless and a honorable tribute to Alvin Lee.
My first time at the Fillmore East was August of '68. We saw Big Brother with Janis, The Staples Singers AND opening was Alvin Lee with Ten Years After. When I saw Alvin...I almost quit playing guitar...thank God I didn't. Joe carries the torch onward.

Alvin was my idea of a Guitar God. I lost composure at the news of his passing and his memory still holds it's granduer in my mind. I couldn't imagine that we would be so fortunate as to have anyone more qualified to hold the Blues and Peace Resonator and resurrect the Notes of Love again
I saw TYA in 1979, Charleston, WV, about ten years after I saw them play at Woodstock. I asked the ticket people if this was the same band from 1969...they assured me it was the same 4 guys. The show was excellent! Alvin played the fastest licks I ever heard, and I never heard him hit a wrong note!

Alvin and George Harrison on "The Bluest Blues" is one of the greatest emotional guitar sounds ever combined IMO. Wish Joe would have attempted that one!

The Bluest blues is the finest combination of blues and rock in existence. It brings out the best sound that can be made with a guitar. It's sad that Alvin Lee doesn't have all the recognition that he deserves. He really made a great addition to the rocking band in Heaven.

Me too. I recorded Woodstock on beta when It came on tv in the 70s. Going home was the showstopper. Its what i call blues shred. I saw him twice. Awesome. Space and time is a classic all guitar players should have a copy.

VERY VERY NICE ! Back in Rochester NY in the early 80's I got the double whammy of Alin Lee and Johnny Winter in the same show . To this day I can't remember two great guitar legends playing so fantastic . They both had a great time and without saying, so did the crowd at he Auditorium Theater that very special night . The Red 335 and the Firebird crushing the blues all night long. May you both RIP,

As much as I like joe because he learned at an early age from the master of the telecaster the late great Danny gatton Alvin lee was far superior in playing to joe Alvin lee was probably the best guitarist of the 60’s and 70’s and never got the recognition he deserved I would have love to have seen Danny and Alvin Jan together now that would be something!
I know just what you mean - but for many like I - ALVIN LEE got a lot of recognition from me - I remember HIM well , Joe Nania a.k.a. "Hollywood " Joe
I dont know that Alvin was that much better technically than even Joe. We all get caught up in who was the best, when it all comes down to a matter if preference. There are thousands and thousands of very good, capable guitarist in the world, and then there are probably a hundred or so that exist as a group of their own, many if which post people couldn't name if their life depended on it. There are great players that people may have heard their names but for the life of them they couldn't point to anything they ever did. One of the greatest players I ever watched was Bugs Henderson. Bugs just never fit the rock profile when he showed up on stage barefoot in a pair of cut off Levi's, and just played. Then you have the select few who are Gods. Eddie Van Halen got into that class because not only was he so talented but was innovative with the techniques he used. There is one thing people forget though when they name the greatest guitarist. Those thousands of very good guitarist, can often play a song just as well as the original player, the difference is that someone had to lay down the original licks. Just becaue you can play eruption and sound just like EVH, but without Eddie, that little guitar number wouldn't exist. You not only have to play great songs, to be truly great you have to write the part you play, and then you can be one of the greatest ever.
The best white blues player in America in that time period was the late Michael Bloomfield..
The greats all acknowledge this fact…

I had Cricklewood Green playing in the car just the other day. Check out 'Working On The Road/50,000 Miles Beneath My Brain'. Alvin Lee was a lot more than just 'Going Home' at Woodstock.

I would like to say that Alvin Lee has always been one of my favorite performers. He can and does play and sing slow blues very very well. His live solo album remains one of my top ten favorite albums. He left us far too soon. ☮️🙏❤️

At one time Alvin Lee was the "fastest" guitar player on record. Blazing output of rhythm and melody from the man who would love to save the world. Now we know what to do?
Faster than anyone else with total accuracy. And he never lost the feel of the song, but that might have been that he had an amazing rythm section that would follow him anywhere. Ten years after was pure gold.
@@jefflitchfield4950 I think those E335s have a fast "D" shape neck as opposed to more of a "C" neck Like on a Strat for example. I have a cheap " E335 style' guitar, , an Oscar Schmidt " Delta King" And the neck is very fast on it. So if this has the same type of neck I can see why Alvin Lee liked it

Saw Ten Years After in 1973 (a guess) at Bayfront Center in St Pete, FL. I was three rows back from the stage. At one point everyone in front of me was actually standing on their chairs, and a glance behind me it looked like more of the same. Not saying I liked standing on my chair but that was the only way to see the performance for a while. I think he must have been at the top of his game at that time. Really amazing player who could create a lot of excitement to the stage. Joe certainly knows his stuff but it just doesn't feel the same as Alvin Lee. RIP
saw the same show in Johnstown, PA. in '71. My first concert @ 16 years old. 2nd row and never will forget the peace sign, tone and shredding. Alvin had it all, I was forever hooked on live shows. Good Morning Little School Girl blew me away!

I live near Paris. I vew 2 times Alvin Lee in Paris. Last time, I remember this: He came on stage and was applaused so loud and so long, that he immediatly played our favorite song: I'm going home.

My wife & I saw Joe in December of 2022 here in Phoenix. He was indeed awesome. As a guitar nut, I was graced with witnessing him using several beauties: his '59 Les Paul, a vintage Goldtop, two 335s, and a Tele. I so wished I'd have seen him play Alvin Lee's "Big Red". Still that iconic guitar is definitely in the right hands.
