you are one of the few Americans that can live a life of contentment. We all know it is already difficult to adapt to a new culture and be willing to be patient and accept the difference in how they view time...To learn to be humble is one of those characters i still continue to learn everywhere i travel to. But once i master it and learn this over many years...i am sure i will be just as content as you, to be appreciative of today...for me i am already thankful, but still have some hesitancy of what i must do and where i must go to and settle down one day....But i see it all the time in your face, your wife's face, your family's face its actually genuine...yes i understand, nothing in a relationship is always rosey, but for me you two genuinely a match. the world is small and i am sure i will sit by and share a meal a drink, oh no videos ok? i love watching your videos but not wanting to involve in it for the world to see..your much braver than i......peace and love and good health
Man, this is so true. I spent a month in Thailand. I love to hear them speak - they could be speaking gibberish for all I care but the tone and smile they give is GOLD. I could listen to that lady say Sawasdee ka (2:32) a thousand times and never get tired of it ;-)) My advice is to definitely learn these words and don't be shy about using them. They will look at you a little funny because like me you will miss pronounce of course but don't be self-conscious about it - they are very friendly and have warm humor. Thailand is a great place and great people. Show respect and they will respect you 10 times more in return. Khob khun krab!
Thanks for this video Chuck. I have been here 2 days and have used every phrase in this video. The way you and Paige explain the pronunciation is awesome. I had a lady say ask how many years I’ve lived here lol. I said 2 days. Thanks again for your help sir!!!
A definite before traveling to any country.. learn at least these 5 words in any language and it will open up so many doors. People go out of their way to help you if you respect them enough to make at least a small effort to learn their language, even if you butcher it.
Great to know simple basic words and sentences. I have traveled to many countries and always take the time to learn the most important words and phrases and something about the culture. I have found that people are much more open if you show that you try. In the 80's I lived in Southern California in an are where there were many Vietnamese refugees. Many struggled with English. I took a Vietnamese language course at a local community college. When the neighbors saw that I was trying to learn their language it opened up so many doors. We helped each other out. It became s win win for all of us. Now when I travel to Vietnam or go the an area in Southern California called Little Saigon, people are very surprised at how well I speak Vietnamese.
I wanted to say how much I enjoy all your videos from Thailand. I only recently discovered your channel and haven't watched them all, but they are really well edited and have a lot of great info and entertainment value. I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Bangkok last year on business for a week and find that I frequently daydream about going back, this time with my wife. I really enjoyed my time there and know that my wife will love the culture and food so much more. I'm hopeful that we can spend some time there soon. Keep up the great work - it is much appreciated!!
Good advice! I try to learn three words in every language I can- Hello, thank you, and you're welcome. Just the ability to greet someone in their native tongue immediately establishes an atmosphere of respect. Languages are central to our self image, and when you make the effort to learn even one or two words you can instantly communicate to someone that you have respect for their culture. That's a good basis to start a relationship of any kind.
Excellent. I have been in Thailand and I learned the words over there, when I stayed in that lovely country. The ones that you are teaching. Thank you for doing this videos. Do not get engage with people like the one that wanted to impose his things. Most people here appreciate what you do.
A great idea to cover these essential words and phrases. I already knew these words and could be critical of some of the spelling and pronunciation but for many people it's a good place to start. I think it's extremely important (and rewarding) to show the Thai people this kind of respect when you're visiting their country. Liked and subscribed!
I've been studying Thai for just over a year now and this is exactly my reason why I refuse to practice Thai language with non Thai people .99% of the time we both think we are right but in reality we both are most likely to be wrong. In my opinion, If you're going to study the language don't even listen to foreigners as we don't realise our accents coupled with our pronunciation are so incorrect we need a tremendous amount of practice to speak with correct tones etc. Plus might sound strange but some spoken Thai and written Thai is also different when translated from text to spoken.
Really enjoy the language videos. Pick a theme for a video, like restaurant, bank, hotel, train, plane, bus, etc. and make a video for each one? Just a thought.
I think a useful phrase if you ever manage to get yourself in to a situation where a Thai person may lose face is 'Jai yen yen'. It literally means 'heart cool cool'. Basically saying 'calm down'. It can be useful at times for reminding Thai's of the Buddhists teaching......along with kor tort.
that is advanced level but yep . definitely a very useful one; but need understanding of the face thing . honking at someone might get you beaten up . a middle finger might get you killed ...
Hi Chuck love your vids ,, you and your missus make us larf most nights ,, we will be over in November , hope we can come over and meet up ,, cheers all the best mate keep em coming !!
love your channel very informative in a very simple good taste manner. Are you fully retire or do you earn a living in Thailand your looks like you own a shop or something. Also what part of Thailand are you living.I have more year before my full benefits retirement I am really consider Chang Mia as a possibility.Thank you keep making videos please.
Howdy Chuck and Paige,I have just started watching your posts and I can truly say I can relate. I have been living and working here in Thailand since 2007, in Ayutthaya. I have been married to my thai wife since 2007, too. Just this past May, I retired, and we now reside in Kranuan, which is between Khon Kaen and Udon Thani. I am originally from Philadelphia and moved to Southern California when I graduated from college. The wife and I are flying to the US at the end of the week, so we can spend some time with my mother and sister in Philly.Keep the posts goingHoward Sheinman
I thought that was your wife or girlfriend in one of the videos I watched on you talking about The Coronavirus. Ya know....I could tell that she was a very intelligent lady by the way she acted before I heard her speak in English. Oh...I've been wanting to go to Thailand for awhile now, but for health reasons. I can't go due to End Stage Liver Disease and needing a Liver Transplant at MGH in Boston, MA. If I do get a Liver Transplant and survive, I'll probably go. I want to stay for a few months. Well, 60 days is the max with a passport or visa. Oh....I think people in Thailand are good people for the most part, so I watch videos from ordinary people and learn from those videos, so all tips are surely welcome. Who knows...maybe I'll meet someone as smart as her. Of course, Thailand is a beautiful place. I love the mountain peaks especially along the shore. Still, it gets hot there and stays like that all year round. Oh...how I wish I could live in a place like that. I live in Northern Maine where most of the year there is snow on the ground. We still have snowy patches on the ground here. I am so sick of snow and the cold. I wanted to start a business up before I fell ill. All that got put on the back burner, Heck, I was planning on retiring three or four years after starting a business up, and the plan was Thailand. Of course, I even looked into all the regulations as well in order to do that. I wish I would have done it when I was younger, but all you think about when working for someone else is your next paycheck. Well, maybe in the next life.
Do you think learning to write thai speeds up your speaking with the tones ? Im been learning thai for 6 month and starting to step it up and get out of her basic stage
dee mak, every day i see video is a good day for me. I like your Videos so much . ha´ve a nice weekend and stay healthy.. Greetings to hole Family, also Soi Mafia ;-)) ....KUKI
Chuck, how about "Katot Krap"? I have been told this term can be used to say "Excuse me or Sorry". I use it a lot when Chinese Tourists bump into me(This happens a lot here in Chiang Mai). Of course they give me the "What is is wrong with this guy look". Good video and those five words are very necessary.
I say that to when I am trying to go around people just standing in the isle with there carts in middle of isle at store. Yea the "look".. It is a combination of our bad accent, a surprise you are speaking Thai, and our poor pronunciation of a word that has to sound perfect in order for them to understand a 1 or 2 word sentence.
Haha I live in China and they do like it when you know so words. I am terrible at languages with tones so Chinese has been hard for me. However I have learned some and they are much friendlier because they can tell you are trying. Though be prepared that they will laugh themselves silly when you do it. haha
A more simplified version of where is the bathroom, " Hong nam yu nai mai krup,"....Hong = room... Nam = water...yu = where. Remember, if you're asking someone a question, place the word mai at the end of your sentences
My best phrase is: Mai au kap meaning: No, I don't want it ( A lot of thai will come up to you and offer something to you; if they hear Mai au kap they will leave thinking that you know your way around.)
Don't worry Chuck, most Portuguese speak English and we are very adaptable... lolol... Just kidding... but now you know you have a Portuguese subscriber. Keep up the good videos.
Is the krob ending if you are a male or addressing one the same with the ka ending. Or is it like Japanese where there are two distinct sets of words that men and women use when speaking of the same thing.
I never met a standard western style gay man in Thailand. If he didn't act gay how would you know he was gay. Specifics, specifics.... It was mostly humor..
"tao lai" it's mean "how much"..." la ka" mean "price", so "la ka tao rai" it means "how much the price", ...but when you speak to thai people, it's more polite you say " la ka tao rai krop" (for male speaker) or "la ka tao rai ka/kah" (for female speaker)
Sir I'm going to Thailand for two months in early Aug on business purpose, to buy Gemstones, every week I need to stay 4 days in Bangkok, to buy gems in JTC tower where there's Gemstones shops, then 3 days in Chanthaburi to buy Gemstones, can you suggest me inexpensive hotels for two males? Also if you have any information on how to create PayPal in Thailand please inform me on that too. Thank you
keep it real.. yes ! i was on Jom tien beach 15 yrs ago sitting with a Thai girl when these hawkers, one after another kept coming trying to sell all kinds of stuff and did get annoying so learning to say mai ow khrap was my first Thai word that i learned. Add the khrap on to the end for a bit of politeness ! but yeah good one
you dont really hear Thais asking people "Sabaidee Mai Khap" its really book talk, unless maybe you haven't seen this person in awhile......something that would be more common would be "Pen Yang Ngai Bang"

I just wanna say thank you for all of these videos. I think of you as the worldly traveler dad I never had.
Years later but going through your vids and a few others definitely puts my nerves at ease, thank you 🙏
For me, the most important phrase to learn in any country I visit is always "Thank You".

Thank-you, Chuck and Paige. I especially appreciate your authentic pronunciations, Paige.
Great video. Yeah really one should know the basic words when visiting Thailand.. Thank you so much.

Very good ! Especially the hong-naam utiny. That was on of the earliest expression I had desperate need of when there.

Is the krob ending if you are a male or addressing one the same with the ka ending. Or is it like Japanese where there are two distinct sets of words that men and women use when speaking of the same thing.
MEN use Krop and Women use Ka or gays use Kaaaa
Is that correct, standard western style gay men (not ladyboy's or crossdressers) also use Kha?
Never knew that.
I never met a standard western style gay man in Thailand. If he didn't act gay how would you know he was gay. Specifics, specifics.... It was mostly humor..
notime2bsad so it is like Japanese thank you!
What about "Tao Lai"?? That seems easier to remember than La ka tao rai krop. Are they different?
Well would you rather someone come to you and say "How much"? Or would you prefer a stranger to say "how much is this please"?
"tao lai" it's mean "how much"..." la ka" mean "price",
so "la ka tao rai" it means "how much the price", ...but when you speak to thai people, it's more polite you say " la ka tao rai krop" (for male speaker) or "la ka tao rai ka/kah" (for female speaker)
I live in the united states and I'm a citizen. How long are you allowed to stay for an extended vacation in Thailand?
30 days
Thank you :) Is there a way to extend that?
you can buy a 60 day visa and extend that by another 30 days
Thank you

The sixth word to learn is:- " Paen" which means expensive. (My spelling for expensive in Thai could be wrong.)
I'm Swedish but live in Thailand since about 5 yr now and I can't learn Thai. Like I have some form of dyslexia when it comes to Thai
I'm the same way. It's because all the characters look similar. I'd suggest FSI thai

you have it spelled krop but it sounds like you're saying kop. is kop the correct pronunciation?
Krop-Krab-or-Khrob is correct, with a rolling r. In speaking language thai's just say kop
Chuck, what if I speak 100 times more than just those 5 "words"? Would life be much more easy for me, thanks?
Overthinking?????
Believe me, the most important word that you need to know when you are in another country is "TOILET".
Hong Nahm (literally 'water room') is bathroom in Thai, but they know the word toilet too.
You can say that if you like. I'd rather say "Hong nahm yoo nai, krup", "Where is the toilet, please?"
keep it real.. yes ! i was on Jom tien beach 15 yrs ago sitting with a Thai girl when these hawkers, one after another kept coming trying to sell all kinds of stuff and did get annoying so learning to say mai ow khrap was my first Thai word that i learned. Add the khrap on to the end for a bit of politeness ! but yeah good one
Toilet and beer ;)
Hong Nam and Beer,,, Beer is universal,, LOL, 555555!
For those not to confident for how much you can say Jack bhat
Where are you in Thailand?
THAT PHANOM
Almost impossible to learn Thai language !!! I don't know how you did it ????
Ady H its actually really easier to learn thai
เรียนภาษาไทยงรายจริงๆนะครับ
I once said "Hung nam" and I have no idea what they said next and almost lost it.
I love the Y
Thank you Chuck. Nice video Krob koon krop ;-)
you dont really hear Thais asking people "Sabaidee Mai Khap" its really book talk, unless maybe you haven't seen this person in awhile......something that would be more common would be "Pen Yang Ngai Bang"
She wasn't feeling well yesterday...
Im from thailand
The -ka version for women, is that when you are talking TO a woman, or is that what women say? Thanks.
Marshal Giggleman only girls say ka.boy say krap
Good job Chuck :)
so if im a male i say krop or is it if im saying it to a male i say krop or ka if its a female im talking to
You say khup or khrap
They’re not laughing at you , they’re laughing with you,….uh…….No they’re laughing at you 😂 just funning
