Can the Aperture Light Dome SE be set up in less than 5 minutes? Which Softbox do you use?

- Whats up everybody, thanks for checking out this Video. I got the feeling from watching UA-cam videos that setting up this Softbox was difficult. So in this video I set it up in real time, so you tell me if it's worth the trouble of using it as a travel softbox.

I would only recommend always first inserting one on one side and then the opposite rod on the other side. then turn it 90° and insert one again and then the opposite one. and so on... this ways the tension stays constant. in the first setups I somehow broke a few tips of the rods because I put them in a circle one after the other
Bummer good to note, so far I have not broken any, and I take them down and put them up at least once a week...
@@OsiasBoyd Yes. I do it that way too. I did it in a circle the first time and rods were bending like crazy, Had to back off and it's faster
The same happened to me. Do you know where to get extra rods?
@@bet_ican I've never seen them available online either. I simply asked my dealer where I bought the light dome and he sent me 3 spare rods for free.
@@bet_ican however, the retailer must have ordered them as spare parts from aputure. it took a very long time. I once asked about the delivery and he said aputure hadn't delivered yet. eventually they arrived.
I don't have your arms dude. These shits are so difficult to bend.
I need to buy New arms to blend that ! Haha
the other videos made it look so complicated lol.. thanks a lot now. I know which one I’m gonna pick up for sure!!
Amaran has a tutorial on their page and it’s ass! Thank you for the help brotha
thanks to show the set up progress! Do you think is better this one even if it is hard to mount or better the SMALLRIG Softbox LA-D85 ?
Good question, I haven’t tried that one, I don’t think you can go wrong with either, but maybe I’ll do a review on it, soon I’ll be buying more modifiers…
Wow, yea…it was simple. Thank you for the 3 minutes to show us. I would purchase it, but it’s a little too large for my space..
You are so welcome!
I will not be getting this.
Well, now try to disassemble it…setting it up isn’t where you most often break the rods. It’s when you try to get the rods out they either break or loose the metal tips. And when you’re out of rods you have to buy a new dome since spare rods aren’t sold separately.
Hi and thank you for your Tipp to first put the red one first. That’s the best advice. After that, it’s a piece of cake 🎉
thank you so much for the video i was about to return the dome and then your videos shows up :)
No problem 👍
I agree with pretty much everything you said here, but you do forget 2 important things about the Light Dome II, compared to the SE. Although there's only 1.5'' difference in diameter between the two, the LD II is 8'' deeper, meaning the light source is 31% further away from the diffusion layer, resulting in a noticeably softer light. Also, the LD II has 32 sides, while the LD SE has 16 sides, so catchlight will be rounder with the LD II. Is this really worth twice the price? It depends... could be yes. If you're a hobbyist, i'd say most likely no.. save your money as the SE is totally good enough. If you're a working videographer, then all these little things (easy installation, softer light and rounder catchlight) do matter and is worth it. There's still other aspects to consider where the LD SE could be better than the LD II, like in small spaces where that extra 8'' depth may be too hard to hide out of the frame (that's also why there is a mini version as well). So depending on the situation, they both can make a big difference. That said, i'm going with the SE as well! Peace bro!
Just want to say thanks so much for your very helpful video. I just got this dome light today and had no clue as how to set it up, but your video certainly enlightened me.😊
Glad I could help!
You are the 2nd reviewer who showcased how easy to set this up without breaking the rod. My guess probably people just too spoiled with how easy the light dome II is. I almost decided to skip buying this product because of what people are saying about setting up and breaking the rod on the first setup. I have watched 2 reviewers who demonstrated how they can install it.. and it doesn't look as difficult as what people are saying. So I guess it depends on who's setting up..LOL. Thanks for your review. This helps me to proceed with my purchase.
I had the same question here. Thanks for helping us.
Does anybody know what the difference is between the 1.5 and 2.5 diffuser?
Anybody else sweating while putting this thing together?😅😅
err i'm searching everywhere for a vid on how to disassemble, the assembly was easy.
I have both and the Dome II sets up in about 1.5 minutes. Diffusers pack right with it.
Thanks 👍
No problem 👍
Thanks for the Video Osias. Its appreciated.
Who designed this mess.
That’s pretty funny, It’s not that bad.. lol
@@OsiasBoyd Man I had to watch your video to figure out how to set it up, appreciate that! I just might not ever collapse it already got weak wrist it was a bit of a struggle.
I just made an update video explaining it a bit more, If you don’t have to collapse it don’t.. check out the new video and set up let me know what you think, and good luck, I’ll be getting the new Aperture light dome soon, I think it’s time for an upgrade..
Great video, thank you!
Been looking at getting new lighting setup and was worried about how difficult this would be to setup.
Feel reassured after watching this :)
Thanks, this is exactly the info I was looking for!
Great glad it helped..
Does anyone else just leave their light dome setup all the time or is that bad practice?
I leave mine set up all the time, pointless in taking it down if you have the space..
I like the lighting of your video. Looks really good man. Thanks for the review
THANK YOU. I was literally keeping it put together to avoid putting it back together again. I looked up tutorials but nobody showed what you just showed. Thanks!
Awesome glad it helped you
Ya that’s where I went wrong. Shoulda done the red ones first but still didn’t take long
Haha I made the mistake at least once myself!
Great video, thank you!
Thank you, this was absolutely helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
3:23 what we’re all here for. Thanks man!
Thanks mam
Great video. Thank you 🙏
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
I made a follow up video check it out if you’re thinking about buying!
Great video man thanks for the help!
Good video. I was trying to figure out if the light dome 2 was right for me. But now I think (for half the price) the SE is the move for me
Thanks most reviewers makes people want to stray away from the se version
@osias speaks, I was on the verge of cancelling my order of the light dome SE, because of all the negative review on how complicated and time consuming the set up was. Then I saw your video, went through with the order, as the softbox arrived I followed your instructions and was hunky-dory! It proves that intelligence cannot be replaced. Thanks!
Awesome glad this helped you!!
would you recommend using both larger diffusers?
That depends o. How much diffusion. Your light needs, how many watts is your light? It may be a good idea to experiment with it.
@@OsiasSpeaks ok, I'm using an aperture 100d. Maybe I'll try it out and see what it looks like.
@@quiztasiarocks cool, I think I’ll try it out too, it sure if there’s an advantage but it will be cool to see..
I have the Light Dome 1 and it's the best for travel. Can pack 3 of them in same space as a Light dome 2
This is the only video that carefully explains how to assemble the Aputure Light Dome SE.
Thanks to this video, I was able to assemble it easily. Thank you!!
Glad it helped!
thanks for the tips!!! how would you go about putting a gel on the se lightdome. just maybe taping it inside the lightbox near the light?
Whats up brother, really depends on the light your using considering heat, but a good place to tape it is just inside the modifer close to the base where the light comes in. make sure the light is not touching it, if your using a led cob light you should be good to go....
@@OsiasBoyd thanks mate big ups ⭐✨🌠
Nice video. I usually use the quick collapsible softboxes on my channel but started off with the rods! Keep creating!
Thanks brother appreciate the comment..
@@OsiasBoyd no problem gotta show support
I have softboxes of multiple brands and honestly the first impression was: "god, i'm going to return this, the idea of doing this every day at least 2 to 4 times is terrifying". but yeah, it'll get better with experience and the damn rods/fabric willl loosen a bit. on the other hand it's the strongest and most firm softbox i ever had (due to the great tension). don't know, it's so compact inexpensive and lightweight. i'm torn.
Wow that’s a lot of setup and break downs, would love to hear how they hold up to the constant wear, personally I only break them down occasionally, but it’s pretty fast for me.
@@OsiasBoyd when the first rod breaks I'll think of you haha! peace :)!
Saved my life bro, thanks
I kind of loved this video in a masochistic sense… we’ve all had the experience of struggle to fix/assemble something while watching a UA-cam video that is insisting the process is easy. This guy takes it a step further by sprinkling in offhanded comments about how stupid/silly the people who can’t assemble the light dome are, which was a blast to watch as my scratched-up hands struggled to bend the wires into shape. One million stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ returning the light dome for the less-hassle version
