The drum sound in this video is glorious for a drumcam view. Kai Hahto is a living legend, the whole song looked like he was taking a holiday, playing a driving rhythm without a care in the world😃.
Kai has been my favourite drummer since the Swallow the Sun/Wintersun days. It's lovely to see him be in a big band like Nightwish for his career as I know he has a family to support. His skill is next level and I honestly think he is one of the best metal drummers in the world. I have met him twice and he is so friendly. Thanks for a great video!

This guy is a special drummer. I'm a big Wintersun fan and not so much into Nightwish, but I am happy to see him playing in a successful band and touring around the world sharing his talents. I hope the band has even greater success in the future, thank you for sharing.

Wow this is amazing. You can hear how intricate all the different beats are. Gives me a new appreciation for just how good he is.
Nice! So glad we got a (high quality) drum cam of a new track. I think Pan is probably the best drum track from the newest album, but I doubt that one will ever make it in the set list.
So far pan has been played once on the virtual shows
@@desape as much as I enjoyed the virtual show at the time during lock downs, still pales in comparison to live concert (in person or recorded).

Fantastic drumes Kai Hahto delivers :-) How do they manage to isolate the drum sound so well?
There isn’t much stage noise with big name bands. They tend to keep amps isolated for the best sound. So, the only thing making heaps of noise are the drums and vocals.
Yes, the stage is "quiet" because everyone has in-ear monitors. On this one I have recorded the drums with two different Zoom recorders pretty close to drums (one behind the kit and other one between the kick drums) and mixed from there and applied some other audio magic powder 😃

Do you know why he's using the triggers on the toms? I assume to layer sounds for more punch.

Thanks! The triggers are there to drive gates. So the sound is only the acoustic from the drums (no samples) and triggers are there to control basically mic on-off. Which reduces leak to tom mics.
@@anttikangasaho Thanks for answering! I know this method from studio recordings, very useful. But how do you set the triggers to "look ahead" in a live situation? I mean otherwise the gate will only open when the drum is already being hit.
That's a very good point and goes beyond my knowledge, I was actually wondering the same thing. Let's see if I can figure it out.
@@drumjack You have to side-chain the trigger into the noise gate, then you set the gate release as long as you need. Triggers can't see the future ofc, but they are a lot (like ALOT) faster than noise gates, which they could eat part of your attack, in this way instead you have all the sound with its full attack, and more attack means more Metal for everyone =)

Interesting. But if the signal from the trigger is so much faster, how come that there's no delay if I'm using them to layer sounds on top of the acoustic tone?

@@blake86303 Exactly. That's the best thing about nightwish. All of the performers are INSANELY talented, but they don't need to try hard to show it in every song. Honestly, some of the drum patterns in here are very difficult to pull off accurately when live, that's a skill in and of itself. Not every song needs insane fills.
