- Astronomers may have discovered evidence of an unseen planet in the farthest reaches of our solar system, almost 10 years after Pluto was demoted. Michael Lemonick is a writer for Scientific American, and joins CBSN to discuss this surprising find.
To say that Pluto isn't a real planet because it's a dwarf planet is like saying a dwarf human isn't a real human.
Except you'd then have to include all of the objects in the Kuiper belt (where Pluto lives) and the astroid belt (which had objects that are almost identical) and you'd have the 10,000 planets to memorize as a kid...

I considered myself a layperson in regards to this stuff...but listening to the reporter, someone who was prepped for this, was, frankly, laughably uninformed about the subject. I now realize how ignorant most people probably are about very rudimentary astronomy and concepts of physics. It's deplorable that adults actually need "mass", as a basic concept, not even the more esoteric nuances of it or how it functions, explained to talk about planets. And to know so little about the Big Bang theory that they would say/think the planets were spat out during it? Like, for real, you don't even have any business discussing the subject to "inform" other people.
Very disheartening.
So, can we finally start teaching real science in schools? Please?

Nibiru in Sumerian mythology has a orbit of 3600 years to 4 parts =14,400 year orbit . Sumerian Mythology says it's far beyond pluto. And that the planet is bigger than earth . So did they read the texts and look for the anomalies to prove the planet or did they stumble across them while researching the solar system and follow the anomalies. The true ninth planet is still the 9th planet is still Pluto. Phillip Metzger, a lawyer, has restored it to planet status. You must now refer to any other planet by the number 10.
Which is what Planet X meant originally. Planet Ten. I say that should now apply to Eris. So this new one might be Planet XI or maybe even XII or more.

The question about the planet being so far out and still being under the domain of the Sun's gravity was a good one. Of course, any object more in the vicinity of the sun than in the vicinity of another star is going to be more influenced by the sun. But I'd like to know the acceleration, the gee's, that would be exerted on me by the Sun at the earth's orbit as compared to far out by the Kuiper planet. I think the former is a tenth or hundredth gee (half a hundredth--just looked it up). The latter would've been interesting to hear.

This is fascinating! We need to find out in detail what a planet between Earth's mass and Neptune's mass is like. Also, the "Big Bang" was not an explosion. It's the rapid expansion of the our universe.
The one consistent thing about astronomy is how they keep finding out they don't know jack about how the universe really works or what planets really are. Thousands of exo planets discovered and the very first one discovered completely broke the laws of planet formation that astronomers thought they knew. So taking little Pluto out of the official lineup of planets is just another example of astronomers deciding what a planet is. Good for them. I guess the planets and any inhabitants they might have, don't care what we think they are. In the case of Pluto, apparently size matters. Pluto has diverse topography, an atmosphere, an independent orbit around the sun, even a magnetic field, plus 5 moons of its own - but it's not a planet anymore because it doesn't have enough mass to clear the space around it. They think it's part of the Keiper belt. Maybe that massive planet beyond Pluto is too, who knows? I do know, astronomy is still an infant science - and Pluto is a planet and I'll bet the new "planet X" isn't the only planet we will add to the list. Astronomers - let's go FORWARD not BACKWARD.
Astronomy is not an infant science. It has been around the same time as humans. What is relatively new is the mathematics that we use to try to understand the universe. To say that astronomy is new, is literally discrediting the thousands of years that the human species has studied and followed the stars.

I wasted 5 minutes of my life watching this clip. Why in the world your estimate of the 10th planet (I still regard Pluto as a planet) orbit vary so much? I saw 10,000 years, 15,000 years and 20,000 years. Just go to Sumerian tablets of 4500 years ago and they give the accurate orbit of 3600 years.

Look for a three star (like) configeration north to south. Above or beneath the configeration is a forth star like light body (red looki g). Look in the western sky between 9pm to 1am? You can see it. It moves south to north,

Is that the orbit they recon its on? why is nobody concerned with that orbit? If its there and they dont know where at the moment, it can be anywhere on that orbit !!! I see now on BBc they show the orbit as well but they line up the other planets on the other side so that it doesn't look like they will cross, but clearly if we move like normal it will.
