There are countless theories and methods on how to zero your AK rifle. I have tried almost all of them, with mixed results. After several years, the method I have settled on is the 100 yard zero. This one is the most practical, effective, and least confusing of all.
I laugh every time someone tells me ak's aren't accurate .
I laugh too, because what they are really saying is that they, as shooters, are inaccurate.
@PunchingMegaTree I haven't heard too many people claim that their AK is some kind of laser beam. And no one buys an AK for their "accuracy". But, as AK enthusiasts, we get tired of the same old Fudd lore that AKs aren't accurate whatsoever. And any AK owner that claims their rifle can out-shoot, in accuracy terms, an AR-15, is an idiot. Any rifle that can shoot 6 inches at 200 yards is plenty enough accurate for my taste in an assault rifle. Being able to hit a human torso at 300 yards is all you really need.
They aren't. The system doesn't lock up with the repeatability of an AR. The end. It's simple engineering physics. The locking mechanism of an AK is less precise than it's counterpart these days: the AR. Yes, both can hit an 18" plate at 400 yards. Change that to an 8" plate and get back to me with your results. The cone of fire in an AK starts to become large enough that regular hits on that plate become challenging at best. A novice shooter with both rifles will only ring that plate regularly with one of them.

PunchingMegaTree keep in mind, we are talking about combat accuracy here, the ak (in 7,62) is about mixing meat and metal at up to 300 yards and 9 inches at 300 will definitely give you a good torso hit, so nothing wrong with that
Also, if you are anal about groups, use quality ammo (like in the ar) and you will cut the group size in half

Assuming your not training for the Olympics and aren't expecting hole in hole at any distance, be about an inch and a half low at 25. Which is most indoor ranges, few have access to open fields, and you'll be pretty spot on at 100. For anything you'd use that rifle for anyway. Aim center of chest and hit an inch or so low and the threats done, wanna feed yourself and you'll crack a rabbit at 100 and certainly something larger. I think there's too much thought on target shooting with these kind of rifles. 200 yards aim slightly higher and so forth at distance.

I always check out your AK vids, they're the closest thing I can find as far as practical information about fighting use that I can translate to the SKS platform. Most people like to stick their noses up at the SKS platform but I fell in love with mine!
Sks is one of the most reliable battle proven rifles in history.

My uncles exwifes brother is a delta seal ranger and he says that they zero at 87.5 yards.
They just changed it to 89.33 yards. Better dwell time.

Good video. Important note if you're using adjustable irons, many AK irons measure in meters not yards. For reference, 100 meters is about 109 yards.

Mom said I have to zero mine outside. The brass makes marks in the drywall when I shoot it from my computer desk.
I'm wanting to try the Battle/18m/100msetting sight in with the irons. You set it on Battle Setting, sight in at 18 meters, then set it on 100m and shoot it at 100m (or 100 yards just a little above the zero on the target) and it should be in pretty good in all settings. It also apparently works at the 200 meter setting to sight in at 25 yards and switch to the 100m setting and check it at 100 meters. The battle setting is supposed to be a range of out to 247 meters (~270 yards) on a human sized torso target, while the 100m works in the 50 to 100 yard shooting ranges and the 200m setting works at 25 yards out to 200 meters and was recommended for urban or jungle ranges. Of course I got all this off a website. lol. But yeah they wanted to dispell the myth that the battle setting and 300m setting were not the same thing.
Reid, thanks for the video, just zeroed my PSA 47 G3 using your method for both irons and tdot works perfectly.
I used to zero my dot equipped AKs at 100. I changed recently, to a PBZ with a vital zone of 3.1 inches ( Optic height over bore is 3.0 ). My reasoning for doing this is because that is the flattest shooting zero , and allows hits within the size of a 10" paper plate out to 283 yards by holding dead center. The bullet is within 3.1 inches of the POA from the muzzle to 236 yards. A paper plate is about the size of the vital zone of a deer, or the torso of a man. At 300 , for a center mass hit, just aim at the center of the face on a man type target.
Near zero is 37 yards
050 - +0.8
100 - +2.8
150 - +2.8
200 - +0.4
205 - 0.0
250 - -4.8
300 - -13.3
400 - -42.8
500 - --94
I prefer it over the 100 yard zero because it is much simpler to point and shoot and get hits for me without worrying about hold overs, while still being close enough for good precision, hits on a coffee cup if you can do it, out to almost 250 yards.
For comparison, and I'm not saying one is better than the other, or the same zero is best for everyone, the 100 yard zero looks like this.
Near zero is 78 yards
050 - - 0.6
100 - 0.0
150 - -1.4
200 - -5.2
250 - -11.8
300 - -21.7
400 - -54.0
500 - -108.0
You fall outside of that paper plate zone at 238 yards, and you fall outside of that coffee cup zone at @ 200 yards. The hold overs at 300 and 400 are much easier to figure correctly in the field. Just aim for the center of the head on a silhouette for center mass torso, and for 400, hold double torso high above the head. Not an easy shot for some of us if the wind is moving, but that's a bit easier than the 54 inches, where you'd hold two persons high for me.
What do you suggest I zero mine at with a 4” sight over bore?

Thanks for that. I've always sighted at 50-yards. This makes a lot of sense to me to change it to a 100-yard zero.

I have a zastiva npap that I shot at over 200+ yards at a target the size of this dudes arm with irons and hit 90% of them at that distance free aim. That was after hundreds of rounds and no proper cleaning... Of course wolf surplus steel ball ammo.... Love my AK and ar in 7.62.

There are some people that confuse me with some of the crazy things they try to explain, situations they fantasize about being (I blame bad t.v.) and just a poor understanding of how marksmanship works. Stick with simplicity, and it will work for you.
I was taught 50/150 meters in military and thats what i still use with irons and red dots. Gives you the most stable hitpoints from 0-200m with 7,62x39

got that wasr and 107...but them can't hang with that MAK! just finished my MOLOT FM-11 fixed leupold, harris bipod, zenitco HG and stock and 75rd drum. i went for the 100yd zero too, ringing that 10" steel all day @ 300.

That rifle reminds me of a old 1933 Willys pickup truck ,that was made tough and reliable to get the job done .
I guess I'm trying to say , I really like the AK , the Rifle is built simple, it's not a beauty queen , we'll that's my opinion.
But one thing you did say that got my attention and probably is the most important thing about this Rifle, and a lot of people that knows anything about this would agree, is when you said that you have shot over 3000 rounds threw this weapon, and it had never had a failure, now that's impressive .
I could probably guess, if you was going to War , I could probably bet on everything I've got , this Rifle would be your weapon of choice, since I've seen on this video how well you can shoot it , I sure would not want to be the enemy in your sites .

my arsenal trigger was very un reliable. trigger would not reset. i replaced it with an alg and it was an amazing improvement

This has been my exact experience with my AK, a Polish Classic from Atlantic Firearms, Primary Arms advanced microdot on RS Regulate mount, with the 100 yd zero. My range has 12" steel plates at 100 to 500 yards. 100 & 200 yard hits with boring regularity. 300 yards is a bit more elusive, though I suspect man size targets would be achievable.
I have been using a Mojo Peepsight for about eight years.Zeroed at 100 And forget about it. Though I do not shoot past 250 yards, this is all I need
FYI the "П"("P") setting, which means "постоянный"("constant" or "continuous") is the same as 3(300 meters).

Hi guys. I have to agree on this item with this gentlemen although from what I can tell the maximum point blank range for the AK 7.62x39 round is about 200 yards, meaning that if you zero your rifle for 200 yards and draw an imaginary pipe between you and the target, the size of that pipe (considering bullet path ) will only be about 3.4” (4” wide) at its apex. Meaning you can basically go center of mass on any target from 0 - 200 yards and you basically will hit every time, especially on larger targets. Bottom line is a 100 yard zero will definitely work great as well but you may want to try the 200 yard zero as well. Just set your sight to hit 3.3” high at 100 yards and you should be good to go. Bullet weight will influence a little but overall you should be good to go. Great straight forward video as well man.
Why not just use the 100m setting on the sight leaf to zero instead of the battle sight zero position? Am I missing something here? 🧐

I put my slider on 1 and sight for 50 yards. Supposedly this is the near zero for 100 Meters anyway. But after that I confirm at 100 and don't touch it. It should be a little high at 100.

When I seen this year ago I though no way with open sights I went out to 100 easily with iron sights just gotta adjust windage
If your zeroing irons though you have to do the 25yd zero on the battle setting of your BDC notches won’t work
except ofcourse that you actually zero an AK by adjusting the front post. the manufacturers given zeroing distance (for a real Izhmash AK thats 25 yards) is what you should stick to, you zero in the front post at 25yard, and then the rear sight height adjuster works perfectly for the indicated ranges.

Put your slider on 1 setting and zero at 50yds.. then move to the P/U setting and it should be close to 100yd zero.. I have had really close results using that method..

Seen a guy at the range fire 7 rounds at a clay pigeon @ 200 yards with a 6.5 creed and miss every time .. He left,I brought out my wasr and with tula and first 3 rounds were hitting right next to the clay , round 4 destroyed the clay.
I think with wpa hollow points it woulda done the job sooner .If you have an AK try the WPA hollow points @ 18 cents a round and just under 2 moa they are good for hunting and shtf.

After the videos on the 100 yard zero for the AR and AK the question that rings in my mind is what do you prefer for the 308 in a bolt action rifle? Different caliber, different system, does it need a different zero to squeeze the best performance out of it? Love the videos and look forward to an answer to this question.

100 yards is pretty much the
at the top of the trajectory curve for 7.62x39. You hit low at pretty much any other distance which I am not a fan of. With a 200m zero it's only about 3" high at 100, with less than 6" of drop out to 300m. You can basically just hold center of mass from 5-250m
It would be worthwhile to find some data on the gunfights in the US that have taken place at 200 and 300 meters.
Reid Henrichs Yea I know 100 yards is the typical combat distance, but if my rifle is zeroed at 200m it's dead on at close up and just a little high at 100. I like having it zeroed this way because where we live there's not alot of places to shoot past 100 lots of trees everywhere mostly do 25 and 50 meter shooting but occasionally like to do longer range out to 200 when I get the chance. Really like your videos btw. I just can't stand to have my front post blocking my sight picture with that fat post I can't see the target if I were to hold high so I prefer to hold under where I'm aiming.

This zero is still extremely useful at distance with minimal holds, even with 7.62x39. In many other videos on this channel, we get to wacking steel at a quarter mile and more with this rifle and many others with irons and red dots. Not everything we were taught in the corps is gospel.

Greg M, much like the ones who believe that a handgun is only good to 10 or 15 yards. Especially S&W, who says a fixed sight revolver has met their "standard" if it hits the target at 10 yards.

Hi Cedric! I'll try and make the long story shorter. I have a S&W 442 that was purchased in 2013. It gives decent center mass groups on a B-27 or similar silhouette at 25 yards and beyond. In 2017, I purchased a second 442, also NIB as a spare. It shot way left at 10, 15, and 25 yards. I sent it back. When it returned, it was less left and "almost" centered at 10 and less left but unacceptable at 15 and 25 yards. Called S&W and the rep said he would send me a label but that if it hit the target at 10 yards, they deemed that acceptable. WTF???? I sent it back with a note asking them to find a shooter on staff who could wring it out at 25 yards and get it sighted in for that. This is NOT an unreasonable distance for this gun. A month or two later, the gun came back with targets, pics of targets, and other documentation indicating that it worked at ten yards and "no work performed". To say I was furious would be the understatement of the year. Called S&W asking to speak to a manager. They would only let me speak to an underling who said 10 yds was their "standard" and my gun met the standard. I told him they have a shit standard if that is the case. They refused to help me resolve the issue. S&W lost a customer off of this.
@@grigorirasputin5020 I have a shield that had front sight visibly off center on the slide. Pistol shot couple inches left at 10m from day 1. Research shows it's not uncommon issue. I'm disappointed with S&W, it's a good carry gun for the price if it shot where you point it. After night sights the gun is more accurate than I am at 50 yards, they are selling themselves short.

If you get a second camera near(ish) to the target and film at the same time you filmed the shooting you can layer it so we can see where and how it's hitting as you shoot :)

Hi, a question from snowy Russia. Why are you setting your red dot on ultimak, above the mounting bolts, closer to the muzzle? Because the gas piston hits in the extreme rear position on the slots above the nearest mounting bolts? Yours faithfully!

i just bought the ultimak rail and after 200 rounds my last magazine whats not hitting my 6 inch target at 25yds does the the gas tube have anything to do with that ???

I love my mak90 3x9 scope and others one time we were shooting at a gravel pit 360 yards by GPS a pair of a10s flew by eye to eye one pilot spotted us less than 100 yards I could read his mind all the pilots looked I saluted

Do you get worried about setting fires by shooting steel targets with steel ammo? I started two fires with my AK-74 variant doing that... I'm very skiddish around AK's and steel now.
I know a 125 grain 300 blkout round is slower then an ak round . But if I wanted to zero it should I use a 100 yard zero ?
I know... 1/2017 but any idea where to start with an 8.3 inch barrel and 7.62 x 39 . Looking at maybe 200 yard max . This round seems to raise quiet a bit from 10 yrds to 25 yrds .

Is it accurate at 25 yards? People always recommend 25 yards battle zero and aim for the belt line at 100. This is definitely different. Prefferalble at longer range it seems.
