What To Do With Potted Bulbs After Flowering

- Just a quick video answering a FAQ on what to do with pre sprouted spring bulbs when they are done flowering. Everything in this video would apply to not only store bought sprouted bulbs, but also if the bulbs were started in a pot at home. Hyacinth bulbs, daffodils, tulips all have different requirements for planting depths and what to do with their foliage when they are done flowering. I just kept it to what to do with potted spring bulbs when the flowers dies.

Just lovely! I am taking care of my Mother on the east coast & she absolutely loves tulips, hyacinths & my Dad has made an azalea garden for her that bloom 3x a yr! My Dad bought a rhododendron that has the most amazing purple color that looks amazing with yellow daisy's. So every time my Mom wake's up from sleeping or a nap she is met with the most amazing garden. It is just within the past 5 yrs that my Dad has shown his great garden resilience as his plants keep growing for him every year. Thank you for this video! :)

Bulbs only grow in colder climates. Cut off only the blooms when they dry up. Leave the foliage as this feeds the bulbs. Plant in the garden anytime. The plant may have a plant marker, put that with bulbs. They will settle into the soil & establish before the winter. If you don't plant deep enough they will go deeper on their own. Amazing!
Good idea to save those tags! Have heard people mention bulbs moving down on their own. Wish mine would do that, seems every few years I have to move mine back down. Like the little buggers are trying to escape! 😆
So I cut my blooms back but my foliage started to turn yellow on the ends and I think that’s because I haven’t watered her in a few days so I watered her good. Would it be fine if I planted her in the ground with my grape hyacinth abt 4 inches apart?
Thank you, I wasn’t looking forward to and probably wouldn’t dig them up to replant them deeper. I wondered why not just plant them deeper the first time? Too much shock to the plant?

Hi Jeff! This was very helpful information! I bought some tulips growing in water from Costco and didn't know what to do with them and they dried out. I doubt that I can save them, but will know this for next year. Thank you so much for sharing!

Great idea! I was wondering what I was going to do with my hyacinth bulbs. I’m just going to stick them in the ground and mark them somehow and then move them this fall to where I would really like them. Since I’m trying to create a new flower bed I’m not exactly sure where I would like them yet, so problem solved! 🌷💚🙃

I picked up a yellow hyacinth at Sam's I never saw yellow before it's so pretty.
I haven't either! Cool! Sam's sometimes gets in some neat plants.
Babe, you always have to cut out the flowers and start feeding them because the leave grow is very neccecary for new flowers next year. Planting them in soil instead of leaving them in the pot is essential
I have to figure out how to keep the squirrels from getting mine. In the ground.. we are overrun with squirrels in my neighborhood. I have mine in pots and put wire mesh over the pot once they die back
I have to do the same here, and I usually forget to do it so ... well the squirrels get to eat a lot of bulbs😆
What do you do with the seeds that grow from the bulb?
Question for you or anyone else on this thread - I planted a bunch of tulips in Fall 2021. I even placed chicken wire over them hoping to protect them from critters and we have a lot of them - deer, squirrels, rabbits. You name it, we got it! Anyway, I checked the tulip bulbs and they were mowed down! Something at the tops of them. Can I still salvage them? Should I dig them, replant them and hope that they will come up next year? Any advice is appreciated.
If it's just the foliage above ground that's been chewed up, I'd leave them alone, add some bulb fertilizer to the soil and maybe pop a bell cloche or even a wire waste bin over the top to keep the critters from chewing them down any further. If the actual bulbs has been chewed up, there's not much you can do. Depending on where it was chewed you could in theory dig them up, cut off the decayed areas, treat it with a fungicide then replant them, but that's a good amount of work and isnt guaranteed to save the bulb.

Just a thought. Maybe someday you could do a video on plants that can cause irritation to your skin? I recently got into something, don’t know what it was and got a nasty, itchy rash on my arm. I was thinking eczema, it runs in our family, but that’s not what it is, so I have been racking my brain trying to figure out what the heck it is. The only thing I can think of is I was messing around with planting some cedar trees and I am now thinking the pokey needles somehow got me. I do know other garden plants can cause some reactions and I thought if you EVER ran out of a topic to talk on maybe you might want to give a list of all the plants/ trees/ shrubs people need to watch out for? Or maybe I’m just the ignorant one that doesn’t realize what some plants, weeds ect. can do to you. Just a thought.🌷💚🙃 It might be a no brained for some people 🌷💚🙃
There are tons of plants that can cause irritation. For me it's almost always from the arborvitaes, spruces, pines and juniper. Something about the oils just makes me itchy. Wouldn't be surprised if the cedar got ya, they are rather oily plants also.
Do hycianta flowers have sèeds
Most of these gift plants will not grow back in areas with warm climates, like Southern California because they need a winter chill. Very few "experts" inform us of this.
I find that incorrect! I live in Southern California and I have hyacinths blooming in my yard right now! I have so much good growth here in my “warm climate” that I just had 3 pups grow off my mother plant and I now have 5 hyacinths! You should really do some research before you speak buddy!!
