Just got to meet Danny Sullivan this weekend at Leguna Seca, and had to revisit this epic race!
I can’t remember who won Indy this year but I remember the spin and win! He is now 73 years old, very friendly and engaging and looks like he could jump back in the car and go racing at any minute.
Thanks for putting this out.👌
That was the first IndyCar race I ever saw when I was 17 in Alaska. I was hooked for life!
It took me 37 years to get to the Speedway, but I finally got to see Dixon take the pole going into turn one at 243. Breathtaking!
The fact that both didn't crash into each other is the true world class talent Just remarkable
Nowadays with IndyCars being bunched together, a spin like that could take out six cars.
Iconic moments like that are few and far between. What a race !
1980-1995 Iconic Moments.
'82 Mears Johncock duel.
'85 Spin and Win
'86 Rahal late pass win
'87 AL Sr. couldn't believe he won
'89 Jr and Emmo
'91 Mears' Masterpiece.
'92 AL Jr and Goodyear
'94 The Beast
'95 Jaques 2 laps down and Goodyear
Not counting speed records and in race stories (Mario's heartbreak in 87).
The Golden Age....wrecked.
Hearing the crowd's reaction to Danny Sullivan spinning and recovering.
Those 1985 cars were absolutely beautiful, something about that era of 80s Indycars is beautiful and amazing.
Oh and reliability of those Buick engines, man that was always the question at Indy, how long will the Buicks last.
Back in 1985 these drivers spent essentially the entire month of May at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The teams/drivers were able to take their car(s) out for practice on many of those days to test their setup and work on finding more speed. At least one source reported "which driver had the most laps of practice during the month of May" ? Danny Sullivan.
Another Great video.
To let the clips speak for themselves and you just fill in the blanks to tell the story.
Well done.
Thank you very much. I appreciate that. Glad you enjoyed it 👍
In viewing this YT video for a second time, an aspect I liked about the era of CART racing back then when compared to current IndyCar: In the 1980s and '90s, the cars had some space and breathing room from each other, making the cars less prone to collisions with each other. And when crashes occurs, the space can allow some approaching cars to evade the wrecks.
Nowadays with IndyCar and the near 'spec' series it has become, the cars are bunched together, which impresses me that more collisions occurs, and with approaching cars subjected to getting wrecked.
This was the last Indy 500 aired on Sunday night after the race. Back then ABC taped the race and we enjoyed it in the evening after avoiding hearing who won the race almost all afternoon. Those were the days!
I remember watching this going WOW
Great video! Danny is an old "friend". Raced with him in France Tour Auto !
That's awesome. Thanks for sharing that.
Jim mccay's enthusiasm is infectious
Im hooked on your content man. Thank you. Never was much of an indy fan growing up.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you are enjoying the videos. IndyCar has had its major ups and downs, but it is still great to this day. I hope you check out some races this year.
Epic win, one for the ages! Danny Sullivan is/was underrated, he was the real deal...
3:13 sounds like Buick’s marketing hasn’t changed much over the years lol! Constantly having to “tap people on the shoulder,” and say, “hey! We still exist you know!”
80s Indycars look absolutely amazing. I wouldn't mind if the next generation of chassis that is long overdue should pay homage to these machines.
What a sight this had to have been in 85. Guarantee that isn't happening again anytime soon in the 500
Nice. Thanks☀️☀️☀️
Plausible explanation of the announcers mis-announcing the leaders could be from the spotters working behind-the-scenes, feeding the info to the headphones of the announcing crew.
When you hear Jim McKay saying about a video replay, that comes from the instructions of the director that guides the production of the televised event, which is from verbal instructions in the headphones of the announcing crew.
Great race. Thanks for posting. I want to comment on your issues with ABC and others not staying with or coming back to the action during a race broadcast. Keep in-mind, that the networks had very specific metrics for viewer ratings. Believe it or not, many championship caliber events or milestone sporting events were rarely broadcast live. Not until the early 90's did the major networks start broadcasting events live. On the west coast, we didn't see the Indy 500 till mid or later in the day on Sunday. As cable television started to develop, the networks felt compelled to compete and broadcast live. Even now, you sometimes will catch a F1 race later in the day on network TV as opposed to live at some ungodly hour on ESPN. Until Magic and Bird came along, NBA games were usually on tape delay. Hard to believe. Keep the vids coming!
Reminds me of max verstapen doing that spin😂
Now THAT is Danny Sullivan's Indy Heat!
Difficult to believe that was nearly forty years ago-I was there that day as a teenager. Went every year with my family; now I’m taking my wife and kids. There’s nothing like Indy.
Just look at those grand stands.
8:33 What an unbelievable save but I'm also thinking that's karma for just going completely off the line 😂 Can't believe how he saved the car
Those alcohol fires burn invisible
ALright, when's the compilation coming of every single time that was mentioned in an Indycar/CART/CCWS broadcast from the 80s to the 00s? Seriously, it felt like every race Paul, Sam, Bobby, Derek, or Bob, TK and company would explain how methanol burns
I was watching this and hearing all the feedback about them missing the restarts. I'm thinking about how they edited the broadcast after the fact and called most of the race after it was over. And then Jim McKay talks about watching racing for reasons other than the crashes, as a crash occurs. So maybe they called that segment live, who knows, lol
" And Mario didn't hit Him!!! Jim! 🏎
Demise90, Recently Ken Block passed away cause of Snowmobile accident himself.
Just like Colin McRae and Family riding with Helicopter in Scotland England died In 2007. They always greatest rally driver ever. REST IN PEACE KB43 AND Colin Flat Out McRae
I remember that day when Danny Sullivan's rear end stepped out on the low line my heart skipped a beat at that moment but i really feel God saved Danny right at that moment!..God bless
how the hell did he not even lose another place holy shit
A NYC cab driver. A cabbie won the 500.
