PEAK Indycar. The cars looked awesome, sounded awesome huge names in the sport Andretti, Unser Jr, Villeneuve and the last year of the Indy 500 for some time. Paul Page doing the commentary oh the memories thanks for the upload
1995 was the greatest and the saddest year for Indycar. Tony George had already inked the deal that would split Indycar. The cars themselves had reached a pinnacle with multiple engine and chassis manufacturers. Indycar was taken seriously enough to be a destination for top F1 drivers. All that would be gone in 1996.
@@encinobalboa It truly is sad to think about. Living just a hour from IMS, and loving sprint cars, I sided mostly with the IRL but did not like the split even then. Hardheaded people on both sides really hurt our sport. 1995 was the peak year, I think.
One of the cool things about those cars is that they had a clear tube going into the helmets that was connected to the turbo charger. The turbo had a pop-off valve that would pop if you kept your foot on the accelerator for too long (the turbo would build up enough pressure to pop it off). When it popped off, you would lose a lot of horsepower, but right before it popped off, the driver would hear a noise coming from that tube that indicated it was getting ready to pop. They would lift off the throttle a little bit and it would kind of reset.
And it's been nearly 20 years since this race was run. Cleveland keeps hosting events bigger than this, but Indycar somehow can't find the sponsorship to come back? Seems more like a lack of effort.
I think Robby Gordon was too talented for his own good. He had so much raw talent he never had to develop discipline. Can you imagine how good he could have been with the discipline of a top driver.
I was surprised the cool down lap incident was not shown. Gordon bangs into Andretti's car as some kind of payback and blames it on heavy steering. There are some passionate drivers who have a difficult time controlling themselves but to me Gordon just seem to consistently be a jerk. The way he left this series was low class and typical of his personality. Moving to NASCAR did not change him very much.
Being from Cleveland I would go to that race every single year up until the last race that was ever held there. It was such a great environment to see a race in!
Back in the day we ran this track in a simracing event. Offline practicing I was convinced it would be a bore. Man, was I wrong! The event was crazy fun with a ton of passing. Those obesely wide straights made for some fun strategies.
This was my favorite track and at the height of my watching Indycar. I struggle to watch it now. I didn't realise Gil was a rookie - I figured he was already a 40 year veteran.
Unfortunately no I didn’t know this sport existed I didn’t know about Nascar until 2001 because of Dale Sr.’s death I watched it off and on until last year I don’t get to see Indycar or F1
Great upload! But you forgot to mention Robby Gordon and Michael Andretti banging wheels after the race. You can just see some of the footage at the end of the video, just more craziness. Btw, I attended my first IndyCar race that season; I watched jaques villeneuve win the season opener in Miami.
Nice video. I actually worked as an ambassador for first two races as well as attending every race that was run at Burke. The unique thing about the track, other than the high speed, was in the grandstands you could see about 95% of the whole track. I loved the fact that I only lived 20 miles south of Burke and was able to spend the whole weekend attending all the events and support races. Thanks to former Mayor Mike White and the Chamber of Commerce that decided the city of Cleveland didn't need the influx of a couple of million dollars into the economy and told Indy Car to hit the bricks as they were too lazy to find sponsorship for the event. Smart, very smart guys.
Used to attend this race back in the day. Nothing like it. The greatness of a road course but able to see the entire track. It was like a giant go-kart track at insane speeds. This period of Indycar was the best era of racing in any series.
As a former smoker, this is one of those experiences I wish I had tried at least once. Peak airline service when beverages were free and smoking allowed - on the plane on our way to spring break. Sounds like a 10/10
One of my favorite tracks, both as a spectator and crew member. Hearing Derrick Walker talk to Gordon is so cool, he had that same stern demeanor forever.
Was hoping you'd get to this one. Cleveland never really put on a bad race, it pains me to know they want to demolish and bulldoze the airport and tear up the runways a la Miegs Field in Chicago
I saw this race on TV and couldn't sit down. The last five laps were so intense I ended up smoking two cigarettes at the same time. I think I was rooting for Jacques Villneuve. Anybody but Penske and Andretti.
1995 IndyCar. What a great season. What followed was terrible for the sport and us fans. Currently golf is in the same situation and the causes are similar. 1995 Indy was awesome and I was there maybe eight days watching Penske try to get up to speed. The race was great all the same. I still have no idea what Scott Goodyear was thinking on that restart. Also, I LOVED those LCI Honda's !!
I remember of this Indy Car Cleveland racing. I was 11 years old at that time and I watched it by SBT's Brazilian broadcast. Gil de Ferran (R.I.P.) had a great chance to win that race, but unfortunately he found Scott Pruett in his way and both crashed.
Came back here to say Paul sounded so much like a captain for that it's scary and hilarious at the same time. No idea if Paul came up with that intro or if it was someone at the network, but... Come on, when they put effort into the pre race as well as the coverage, I want that level of fun back in modern broadcasts, and with Fox taking over for 2025, I doubt we'll see something like that again intro wise EDIT: Also the British Eurosport version is floating around on YT. Ben Edwards takes his usual energy, ramps it up to 12 and keeps that up for the entire race. If you have never heard Ben and Jeremy call a race, give it a listen. Those two made a very good dueo and Jeremy still has it working the radio for IMSA coverage with John Hindhaugh and company too.
Damn did Cleveland have any boring races? Have only seen this dope layout, amazing racing and multiple race highlights of awesomeness. Indycar should somehow try to take this airport before they turn it into a park or something else
Back when CART / Champ Cars was king !!! God I miss these days !!!!! INDY car today sucks !!! Only race I watch is the INDY 500 , Laguna , Bell Isle and a few of the older tracks. It’s just not the same anymore.
So it sucks now except for a long list of races which are good? Gonna be at Long Beach next week and I’m sure it’ll be great racing. You can miss Cart and not dump on modern day Indy Car which has really good close racing.
@@craigyirush3492 what long list ?? The 500 , Laguna , Road America , Portland & Mid Ohio. Only 5 races outta the schedule worth watching now since they got rid of Bell Isle for another shit street corse in downtown Detroit. Long Beach sucks !! and has for yrs especially when they changed it from its original F1 layout to go up the hill on to Ocean Dr then down ocean and the right down the hill back out to just before the hairpin going out to the front straight. The current Long Beach layout sucks , the layout before this one was better. They got rid of W Glenn and Burke Lake front and others , use to travel to Brazil , Twin Ring in Japan , Germany. I’ll take the old Cart over this any day ! the racing was better !! the tracks were better !! It’s becoming F1’s American cousin just a line of cars on shit street corses.
I appreciate you young guys having interest in these old CART races but it would help if you would do some more research and learn to correctly pronounce the driver’s names.😊

The paint schemes as well. It was like Indycar had all the coolest sponsors from nascar and from F1. Seeing Budweiser on an open wheel car is awesome
90’s cart series was peak motorsport!
American motorsport.
And that was real competición, 4 engines, 4 chasis, 2 tire manufacturers, races on at least 5 countries… the good old days
In 1995 they raced only in 3 countries.

Like si said, I didn’t start watching CART until 1998 when Fernandez won at Motegi

Great video. Keep them coming. Those were the golden years.
God I feel old. We got cable just in time for the start of the 1992 F1 and CART seasons. Tony George made IndyCar a minor league racing series.
Can’t believe this was almost 30 years ago. I feel old. 😢

I remember this race well. JV's two years in IndyCar were memorable!
I remember the 1995 IndyCar season as the last real IndyCar season for nearly 13 years.

Indycar races were unbelievable back then. Like a cross between BTCC and the Reno Air Race.
Welcome back brother. Its wild the lack of safety concern back then. Todays IndyCar we would have had 7 or 8 yellows for sure
Welcome back!!! Missed your videos 😊
when Villeneuve was first announced becoming an F1 driver I remember immediately thinking about this race
Cleveland Airport. Always with spectacular races! I love this TRACK!
This race was fun to do on PlayStation CART World Series video game.
@@scottpeters8640 My game was Indycar Racing 2 by Papyrus on the PC, but I agree. Cleveland was always my favourite track.
I remember when Mario came and did a test run late in fall before the first race took place.

We went from this, to exhibition races at Thermal 😩😩😩
Silly comment. Compare it to a real race. They still do those you know. Like at Long Beach next week. Indy Car is a great race series right now.
Welcome back this was the wildest races I've ever seen lead changes galore robby Gordon being a menace it has everything i miss the Cleveland Airport
This takes me back. 52, remember CART before the split. Thank you! It's tay oh fabi.

Great video man. Back when men drove real race cars.
All I can say is great racing in the last few laps of this specific video. I remember a little bit from this race when I was a kid.
They need to bring this race back!! What is the song you used?
This was one of my favorite Indycar races ever, and I’m not originally from Ohio.

This was the pinnacle of American open wheel racing. Miss watching these races as a teen.
Nothing like 90's racing, cars cutting across the grass with marshals' standing around like pylons.
