At the beginning of the story it almost sounds like you're talking about the cold war and the the real for life space race of the late 60's and early 1970's like when they all wanted to get to the moon 🌙
Since the original short story by Poul Anderson was written in March 1957, and this episode aired in October 1957, it would be 12 years before anyone landed on the moon. Given that Sputnik was launched by the USSR only a couple of weeks before this aired, it was certainly plausible at the time that the Americans may not be the first to make it to the moon.
I don’t get it. SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER ……… Was it supposed to be Leonardo Da Vinci that had been on the moon first? How does that make any sense at all? Did I miss something?
You are correct. The story suggests that around 1500 da Vinci visted the Moon using an unknown technology. After his return to Earth, he painted a picture of the Virgin and Child in which certain lunar qualities, e.g., the play of light, were represented. At the end of the story, two Americans are being sent to Italy to try and discover how da Vinci was able to accomplish this amazing feat.
Glad I found this show. Thank you old time radio researchers.
Really interesting story. Thanks for the upload.
What I enjoy is obviously the great stories but the lack of thumbs down too which is for me nice to see!!
6 thumbs down 👎 sad
Shoulda been a "Kilroy was here" on the rock. The WWII vet listeners woulda loved that.
Wonderful!
Great storytelling radio definitely

Yeah they just said cold war but I think in the real for life and I thinking The Americans made it to the moon first eh
Interesting that it predicted the space race twenty days after Sputnik. Hokey ending though.
I think in the real for life the Americans made it to the moon before the other people

Your a bozo! 😂
The author's crystal ball was broken, Weak premise, pathetic storyline, emotional characters. Yuk.
