  • UBC's Dr Rosie Redfield takes on NASA's literally unbelievable "arsenic life" claim. Alongside keeping an eye on bacteria sex, Redfield decides to challenge one of the most potentially controversial conclusions in recent history, that has the potential to change our idea of life. But extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence...
Created by Gudrun Jonsdottir, Hayley Dunning and Golnaz Fakhari with the resources of UBC's School of Journalism and the guidance of profs Dan McKinney and David Rummel.

I believed this for years. Oh the possibilities of life. But years later I found out they fired the scientist to published this

Nice. Actually, Rosie Redfield is Canadian, and I, the narrator, while from Britain, live and study in Canada. Hence all the "University of British Columbia" references. Many others worked on the problem, and Rosie herself in the video acknowledges her collaborators in Princeton

Perfect video to show my biology class as to why replication of an experiment is necessary. Thank you for posting!

I’d like to see more details of what the NASA scientists did. Just because she didn’t find anything doesn’t necessarily mean what they discovered wasn’t true. What is needed is minute details of every attempt ever made. Repeatability is important, but the lack of repeatability in one trial does not necessarily disprove the claim.

Then again... I think the only thing that makes her pink hair stand out is that we usually do not see baby-boomers (or so) with pink hair :-P She seems to have a quite energetic interest in her field as well. Inspiring.

NASA has screwed up on more things than just this. Remember when they sent the wrong sized mirror to the ISS? lol

Or when the collimation of the Hubble was jacked up?

Hmm. My very first video to show how Both Science and Religion bottlenecks our outlook on life, specifically science in this case. It hit me when she said that, "The text books are right, there certainly could be life on other planets, we just don't have any evidence to show it yet." Smart women, she was able to beat the media machine and tell us that Classical Science fights to keep our outlook on life "Boxed In". Sure the science is correct, but for society to declare that there is no life on other planets just because our classical science can't detect it doesn't mean there isn't any life on other planets. The she says the word, "Yet". lol
I can't tell if the women is smart enough to beat the media machine, or just dumb enough to stubleupon this conclusion with scientific facts unknowingly relaying this message. Could be just me staying up too late at night thinking of this scenario...
