  • Per request here is a more in depth look at how I built this box for my GX470. Overall this cost me about $200.00 and took about 2 hours with a friend. The box worked great for a trip my wife and I did to Colorado.

    Just thought I'd pop in again and tell you that I just made my over the weekend and put it in last night. Mine is very very slightly different but almost a mirror of yours - thanks for taking the time to make this video. I'm super happy with it. First thoughts are pushing me to put some sort of bottom that slides out (not drawers, more like just an easy way to get everything tucked in the back). This has been on my to do list for ages and your simple design finally pushed me to do it :D

    So the middle board is not permanent?

    • @yeloautosports
      @yeloautosports  4 місяці тому

      I ended up removing soon after once it realized I could sleep on top without causing sag to the top board. We just shove plastic containers below there now, where we hold our camping gear and food.

    I’m pretty sure I’m going to add an inch of height to go over the wheels and allow me to make the platform as wide as I can. Other people say they have made theirs 52-54” wide. Any thoughts on this?

    • @yeloautosports
      @yeloautosports  3 роки тому

      I haven't measured it all the way above the wheels. What I can tell you is that my box at a foot in height is pretty small for me in the car when I'm in it and I'm only 5ft7

    Im thinking of building this... to put my spare tire ... just got 275/17s on Method 305s ... do you think they would fit under if I deflated it ?

    • @yeloautosports
      @yeloautosports  3 роки тому

      My box is only 12 inch tall. I think if the tire was flushed to the wheel it might but being that most AT tires are pretty large, I wouldn't think so. Maybe you could build the platform slightly taller however this would take away from your overall cabin space inside if you intend to sleep inside the truck.

  • @Psilocy-ben
    @Psilocy-ben 3 роки тому

    You made it! Thanks for doing that. So you have zero problems slightly reclining the rear seats with the platform 40” in the rear? I measured closer to 38” max. Or do you just keep the seats straight up?

    • @yeloautosports
      @yeloautosports  3 роки тому +1

      For the back row they're basically straight up. No one sits back there for me. If anything, build it but don't install carpeting yet. Test fit it and then cut more if needed. Im no engineer lol

      @Psilocy-ben 3 роки тому

      @@yeloautosports Okay got it. I am probably only gonna do mine 36", and have the platform part an equal 36". I need the drivers seat to be far back, and I dont want to have to take it apart to drive like you mentioned. Thanks for the video.

    what type of wood did you use?

  • @matthewolson6212

    Looks great, and thanks for the measurements! Did you consider screwing in the center board you removed? Also, is there a second board attached just below those corner brackets along the back?

    • @yeloautosports
      @yeloautosports  3 роки тому

      the center board was already screwed in . It was a scrap piece so it didnt fit well, but I had put it in just as a safety in case the middle of the box would have too much flex. turns out, it didnt. Yes, I have a small board in the back because I needed to add reinforcement towards the back.

    • @matthewolson6212
      @matthewolson6212 3 роки тому

      @@yeloautosports great! I was curious if there was flex. Does the top screw into the reinforcement board along the back? Thanks again for your help.

    • @yeloautosports
      @yeloautosports  3 роки тому +1

      @@matthewolson6212 Yes. I drilled from the top. I originally had all 3 boards into perfect 90s, but I realized I needed to create an overhand in order to slot in the 2nd board. Does that make sense? It was built ghetto but it works

    the problem with all your 4runner and my gx470 dudes, your all problem is you can't sit up in bed doing this shit. much more comfy to be able to sit when you wake up and play with your laptop or kids or mate, --- when the box is designed to allow the 2nd row seats out of battery. when you remove the driver side - middle seat, now you can lay stretched out on the floor np.

    • @yeloautosports

      you aren't wrong! its just good enough to go to sleep, but definitely no hanging out is happening in the truck
