Well I’ve had my Westerly Pembroke 3 years now and enjoyed every minute but I’ve a Jeanneau Melody now and I’m going to strengthen the rudder tube just like you have explained, thanks for the tip Mike⛵️🙏
I chatted to a French man aboard his Melody at Dunmore East once, the only one I've seen. I think the bathing platform/sugar scoop stern on these type of designs are vulnerable although clear of the waterline. I wouldn't be surprised if more are damaged at the stern than the bow if you can imagine anchors dragging etc. I'm sure the mods you propose will give some peace of mind.
I've sailed long keel boats in the past, sailed over either a whale or a log at night, sailed over pot ropes and never had rudder damage or been caught up. I've had twin keel and fin, and now deep keel and deep spade rudder, (Sigma and Sun Fast) They sail so well but good for tripping up on things. Anything I can do to minimise any consequences can't be a bad thing. Your boat seems a flier. I wonder at the Welsh name, was it you that was homesick?
Thank you HP. I think it's something every owner of this type of boat should look at and see what they can do to minimise water ingress beyond the bulkhead and maybe fit an extra pump.
Hello Andrew, I'll be sailing for sure, having missed out last year with all the yard work. I'll be heading north, seeing someone I know in the Uists and visiting some new places too. Did the First also have a big access slot for all the piping? It seems inevitable it's all low down with the need for them to go under the aft cabin berths.
@@mjcooke2sailingmostly Hi Mike, maybe we will catch-up in the Outer Hebrides if not before ! My goal this year is to get to 61.50N at the Faroe Islands late July/August. I will be taking my Ukelele for a sing-a-long !
@@eebygumcaptain I've often thought of the Faeroes, I watched a few videos of other's trips there so maybe I don't have to go myself ha ha. My chart folio on my tablet ends in British waters in detail. It's the Admiralty one. There are some remote islands, Shiant etc, I'd like to visit. I hope we can arrange a rendezvous somewhere. I'm a lapsed banjo and uke player for some time but will try to practice, a few weeks at sea will do.
I'm gonna be honest here , i've only watched the first 4 minutes , and i already know , and totally agree with what you're talking about . The fact is , i've seen this for myself , on my own yacht . The boat had been re-engined at some point , and to put it bluntly the bulkhead had been butchered . Very little of the original remained , and there was very little i could do . The engine sat right in the middle , and so fitting a new bulkhead would have been almost impossible to fit . So it had to stay that way . A full inspection revealed there were no bulkheads under the cockpit at all . The cabin bulkhead had much larger holes , than necessary to allow pipes to pass through , and itself poorly tabbed in .
Mickey, I guess it's the same on lots of more modern hull shapes where all hoses etc have to lead low down the hull because they have to pass under the berths in the aft cabins. It wouldn't be easy to seal well but maybe some thin ply either side of the bulkhead cut to shape and bolted together would lessen the ingress so pumps could cope. The stronger attachment of the SunFast shown near the end would lessen chances of failure. This bracing could be done to the Beneteau easily enough..
@@mjcooke2sailingmostly Yeah , to be honest i never saw that bit , as like i said , i only watched the first 4 minutes . You're still right to bring it to the fore though , it's a serious problem . What annoys me , is that it's pretty easy to address during the build process , now it seems , they just rely on a liferaft . Personally i would prefer to stay with the larger boat , i've never been in a liferaft , but from what i hear it's pretty unpleasant .

I'm glad to see we share a strong indestructible rudder obsession.

Very interesting and worrying too.

Reminds me climbing around the stern locker in my Beneteau 35s7; hopefully see you back out on the water this summer

good video
Thanks Russ, I hope it gets people thinking how they can prevent a catastrophe by modifying as necessary.
What happened with the sunfast 37
Hi David, She was in the video. Near the end, I compare both boats. I will be sailing the Sun Fast early summer. There will be a video!
