Some music on three clips which are only clips themselves and I hope are considered fair use. Why A Yacht Sinks With Rudder Or Stern Damage

I look at two designs and see the consequences of hull damage at the stern caused by rudder or collision. I think of what can be done to reduce water flow to the boat interior so a bilge pump could manage. Comparing a Benetau and Jeanneau. I see how to strengthen the rudder tube fixing to minimise the chance of failure and water ingress.

    Hi Mike, just came across your page and been watching your videos. I’m new to sailing, and have just completed my day skipper course. Next move for me is to buy a sail boat ready for next season. I presume from your videos that you buy and sell boats? Any recommendations for my first sail boat? Preferably something around 28ft. Enough room for 4 really, with wife and teenage boys. I’ve been looking at Sadlers and Westerleys due to their reputation for safety and seaworthiness, but happy for any advice you can give. Billy

      Hello Billy, Go back over 10 years now with my videos and you will find quite a variety but was happy sailing all of them, 22ft Hurley to Jeanneau 37. I liked the Cobra 850, that's a 28footer, fin or bilge keel options and would accommodate you all at a pinch, headroom around 6ft. I am not a trader but have changed every year for some years now. I also liked the Westerly Fulmar, its 31ft but called 32. Mine was a twin keel and sailed very well. I'd say go for as big as budget allows so the family are not cramped. They all get you afloat and get you places.

    Hi Mike Another great adventure up to Scotland. Enjoyed it very much. I didn’t realise Andrew had sailed in company with you heading north. He has been posting pictures and text on our North Wales Westerly Owners WhatsApp group this season since early in the year when he bought Narnia from down south. I used the Coppercoat branded standard rather than my own. It's 2kg copper to 1litre epoxy if I remember correctly. They supply the maximum copper allowed by environmental regulations. I didn't abrade the surface as they recommend apart from the bits I did after where the cradle supports were. It will be interesting to see the difference after haul out.

    • @mjcooke2sailingmostly
      @mjcooke2sailingmostly 3 місяці тому

      Yes, just me and myself. It's been said that 37ft is the optimun size of yacht, this one is over 11m so marina pricing may affect people's choices these days. Handling at sea is fine, I always find docking the most challenging, single handed. Setting things up in advance helps a lot. This boat sails very well for me with reefed main, and putting in the reef in anticipation while still anchored or on a mooring helps. I've done 9kn with reefed main on the approach to Ardfern in sheltered water. The Evolution 200 autopilot does the sailing at sea.

Obviously a factor that I need to consider before deciding if I can buy the boat and get her to my home port. She is a Hunter Legend 38, well equipped and appears, subject to inspection and survey) ready for the trip. Myself and one other would be available to crew. Nice trip 👍 better weather than mine ! I set off from Poole on the 20th March and it took me 4 weeks dodging the gales. Every day was a strong wind warning but we went to similar places. Narnia is now back in the Straits, hopefully see you about or up in the Western Isles. I’m setting off in July for a leisurely 5 week cruise up to Orkney. Fair winds.

      Fair enough weather, four day wait in Newlyn. I commented on your comment on another channel but it didn't get to you. A few weeks made a big difference then. It was still cold at night for me. There was a heater but I never used. I hope you got some video footage.It would be good to find you up north, I would like to get off soon in the Sun Fast.

    Bonjour Mike. Sut mae. Another season - another boat - or so it seems!! As always thanks for filming your adventures & taking us along with you. And thanks for catching sight of a yacht I have always lusted after - the Oysterman 22 sailing out of St.Maws. I chartered one years ago. Had everything you needed in 22 feet of bullet-proof GRP &, of course, just looked right sat comfortably in a Cornish landscape. It's also lovely to see Porthdinllaen from the sea & the magic of Pen LLyn in the distance. My mother was a native of Abersoch but she wouldn't recognise it today, more's the pity. Thanks again for the adventure, old memories a dipyn bach o hiraeth!! Hwyl a flag. Rej

      Yes, it always feels good to get back north, too many boats in the Solent although not so many April time. Falmouth certainly has a collection of gaff sailed boats. I seemed to have anchored close to a string of pots, that fishing boat came so close, they must find good fishing in the mooring area. They were fishing cuttle just off Newlyn, maybe these the same. Diolch am rhoi y geiriau.

    I don’t like the traveller there ever thought of the German mainsheet?, and as you’ve sailed everything what do you think of Rivals🦑

    • @mjcooke2sailingmostly
      @mjcooke2sailingmostly 8 місяців тому

      I have a stalled Rival 32 project, It's nearly 30 years now. I did so much work on it I had to get other boats so I could sail. I did sail it engineless from the boatyard around to my little harbour about 15ml but that's all in all that time. I think they are a good bet if you have one in mind. They also have the mainsheet track across the main companion. I made a fibreglass sprayhood and when running, the mainsheet would foul the side of the hood so I will have some arrangement of transferring to the coamings on a run. All the best.

Some good sailing for the middle bit. I found video work this time of year limiting with all the dark hours. Happy New Year and happy sailing 2024.

    • @mjcooke2sailingmostly
      @mjcooke2sailingmostly 10 місяців тому

      Thanks for your support and I'm glad you like the video. The Halmatic is an ideal small ocean/offshore cruiser with it's long keel and in the case of the one in this video, a rudder hung trim tab self steering, an Autosteer. They cut through the waves when beating into the seas you saw around Finnisterre. A modern design would have had a hard time there. Crossing outside the Bay in Fitzroy area mostly, she only had a handful of breaking wave tops thudding against the coachroof and rode the big swells and waves very well. They measure 29ft 6in, so will not break the bank with marina charges. They would suit single or double handed cruising.

      It's a bonus to get out there this time of year, it's not ideal for video work with the long hours of darkness but I hope this gave an impression of that. I see lots of similarities in the two nations, some words in the languages are similar, (also to the old Cornish language and Breton). I like it when I sail around the British coast and find accent changing by the next port of call. Thanks for showing support, It's always nice to get a comment.

      Hello Stefan, The way the weather has been, the opportunities between all those named storms meant if I stopped, I could have been stuck somewhere. In the summer, on a cruise, that's all part of the holiday but I was being an opportunist and making a dash for it. I'm at Dinas this pm to pressure wash the boats, the green stuff is growing. All the best for Christmzs and peace for 2024.

We absolutely love going to Tarbert and were lucky enough to be there during the annual seafood festival last year. I was impressed with Tarbert and the harbour and marina. I'm sure it gets very busy in the season. It's so sheltered. I wonder if I'll get to have another visit, there's so many places to discover. I suppose it will be some months now before more sailing. I'd done a clip of inside the boat with the heater, it was comfortably warm, seems I missed including it in editing.
