Sephora is so expensive. I don’t understand how these parents can afford to buy all of these expensive products for kids who don’t even need it. It’s crazy. It’s just a way for these parents to show off!!
Seriously. And many of Drunk Elephant's or Charlotte Tillbury's stuff are $70-90 for a mediocre-at-best product, which the kid doesn't even need and can be damaging to their skin. Anything for their little demon spawn to be "popular," I guess.

My 6yo daughters best friends mom is pretty wealthy and we were talking about this sephora thing last week and she was like even *I* don't spend the amount some of these kids spend in there like what parent is ok with their kid buying 500$ of makeup and chemicals to put on their 10yos face?! It's so weird and can't be healthy for the kids physically or mentally

11:40 For my 6th birthday, I had a birthday party at Justice. We were able to fill up a tiny bag with 5 or 10 items that we wanted and then we all got makeovers done. The difference here is that THIS WAS AT A STORE TARGETED TOWARDS CHILDREN and we weren't getting makeup products that were ridiculously expensive and made for grown adults. That was one of the best birthday parties I've ever had as a child.
I’m 17 and absolutely refuse to go inside Sephora because I have ZERO CLUE how to use any makeup that does not go on my eyes. I’m really good at doing eyeshadow and art with it, but no clue what the rest of the face needs lol
My younger sister got Claire's makeup for Christmas, and she's perfectly happy with it! Kids don't need Sephora makeup or skincare, the most they should be using for skincare is some sunscreen before going outside

I never really got into the whole makeup thing other than the quick powder, eyeliner, mascara blush and eyebrow pencil. On in 5 minutes or less probably. My skin is sensitive and easily breaks out with foundation. I really don't need foundation, so that's helpful. But my dentist gives out chapsticks made of beeswax and kid scents like grape and watermelon. I tried one, unaware it was scented and was in Heaven. Sent me back to being a kid when that's what we had. Bubblegum (clear) scented lipgloss, and fruit scents. Those are so fun. What's wrong with these mothers? Didn't they have a childhood? 😢
I'm a tomboy my daughter is an extreme girly girl. She gets super sparkly eye shadows, lipsticks nail polish blushes, brushes (no eyeliner or mascara) came in a cute little box with a mirror. The nail polish is non toxic and peels off, the makeup is non toxic and safe for sensitive skin. She knows she is NOT allowed to leave out of the house with it but can wear gloss/chapstick. Spent total $50 on everything.😂
I only wore makeup twice, and never used any creams or cleansers on my skin. I was a child who has sensitive skin as an adult, I suffer dermatitis all over, not just on my face, but everywhere. When I was a kid, I was learning how to be self-sufficient, learning to clean up my house, playing outside, using my imagination, reading a book, learning to crochet at fifteen...... why not teach these children how to read and write, or send them outside, allow them to get filthy, and teach them how to crochet or knit? At ten years old, I was grieving a loss, but also learning how to keep house. I was learning how to iron harder clothes, like shirts and dresses, not worrying about my skincare. I was excited for the usual kid things. At eleven, I was getting ready for two trips to a bush children's home. At thirteen, I was getting ready to better understand my body, and being bullied constantly throughout everything. I am no oil painting (plain jane) but this generation is getting ridiculous .
Goddamn.. what type of parents are those? I'm a teen and the most makeup I've ever put on was lipgloss/lipstick, mascara, blush and eyeshadow (only in some cases tho). Like.. back at these kids' age I was still playing with toys, play makeup sets, toy kitchens and dollies, or I'd just do chores to get extra pocket money so I can buy a bar of chocolate or so. These kids are just.. this is crazy. Those kids' skin is literally gonna be ruined by 20 if they're already using this much chemicals.
Did anyone else notice how far the first kids went over budget? They each were supposedly given $100, but the one girl alone spent well over $200. Combined with the fact that they never even considered the "one item each" rule their mom set...that tells me this mom just throws money at her kids to shut them up and doesnt do any parenting. It's way bigger than the Sephora crap.
Mom said one item, deal or no deal. They said no deal… any she took them in anyway!! My mom wouldn’t have even made it into the parking lot if she had ANY inclination that I would expect anything else!! However I also wasn’t the “girly girl” she wanted so maybe she would have given a little 😅 but I never cared for makeup or dolls no matter how hard she tried! Any time I wanted make up I made her do it anyway because I knew she’d do it better (few and far between occasions)
I never even had that much money as a 10yrs old. This is wild to me. Most I did was buy several magazines at once and still never spend over $8 And if it costs more than I had, I obviously couldn't buy it. These kids will have an awful awakening when they go to college or to work and don't get the special treatment anymore.
My toddler has an old wet and wild pallet she likes ro do her makeup with when I do mine. So it's not the plastic stuff but an old one I don't use any more. I would never give her my urban decay eyeshadow lol
This is why I can’t take people seriously who want to blame brands and companies for this type of thing. At the end of the day, You as the parent allow your child to be this way. These children are tiktok content and friends through these women’s eyes.

It’s also not even growing up too fast, because the Sephora kids are just treating Sephora product like how kids would treat products at Toys R Us, but I’ll bet money that most of these kids are egged on by their parents because they think it’s a huge flex to have their little girls learn how to “be pretty” early. Which is sickening when you realize they’re going to struggle with image issues especially when they reach puberty. Also not to mention the creeps who love dolled up little girls…. I went on my first trip to Sephora 2 weeks ago. I'm 15, Fashion/Beauty is my special interest, and I've been severely ill and bedridden, so it was a treat. 1, I didn't get anything 2, THE LITTLE KIDS ARE SO ENTITLED! one pushed me out of my wheelchair!
i was in walmart who was yelling at her dad because she had to get her "skincare", she looked like she wasnt even out of elementary school yet. when i say yelling, i meant it, it was borderline screaming. indeed very sad that these kids are being taught this, they dont even need any of these.
I saw a 15 year old cry over “wrinkles”. They were just natural fine lines we all have even babies. I didn’t even get bothered by her more so than I was thinking how sad it is that we’re telling everyone that having any fine lines means you’re old and wrinkly. 😭

The mom saying "my daughter sees me walk out the door every day with a face full of makeup so naturally she'll be interested" My mom always used makeup, did her hair, she took me to buy her hair dyes and stuff and she always told me "don't use makeup until you're an adult. Your face is just fine the way it is and you can ruin it if you do makeup this early in age" I didn't wear a full face of makeup until 19. And I'm glad, my skin is awesome! Edit: I never said I never user a drop of makeup until 19. I used BB creams, gloss, tinted balms and eyeliner. But concealer, shadow, blush and stuff was something I did after 19.
as a teen who wears makeup i think it’s fine as long as you don’t use too much and make sure to clean your face 😆 but i agree its probably better for your skin if you don’t use it as all
also betting that if she had a son who saw her leave the house every day with a face full of makeup and asked her to get him some, she'd either tell him no, or, if she's more liberal, give much more consideration to what she got him and how much of it rather than letting him just blindly emulate her
My mom was the same too! I've seen her wear makeup on almost a daily basis, but never took interest in it until I was 18 - 20. But she has always told me that you don't need makeup until you're an adult.
i'm 13, and I use skincare (i have severe acne and such so i kinda have to so i don't feel gross and its good for me), my skin has gotten to the point where its pretty clear, and i'm just using some tinted moisterizer to cover up and acne scars and some dark circles. Your mum is so right, and i'm so glad you have clear skin!! xox
Same for me. It's so cool to go into the massive Waterstones and get to even just look at the books knowing I can add them to my Christmas list or ask for them for my birthday and everyone else my age is either obsessing over a new skincare product they got or completely ignoring the fact that they are with their friends and instead of hanging out with them and chatting and playing together, they're scrolling on tiktok.
As a Gen Z parent, my 5 year old daughter comes with me to Sephora but she knows it is big people makeup and she can not touch anything. It's absolutely the parenting.
Also ppl forget that you can play with your mom's old makeup when you start being interested in it, I don't get why they're buying brand new stuff to children
I’m a mother of a 10yo & a makeup artist. My daughter has never gotta anything other than a lip gloss or body lotion from Sephora & im a mfn rouge member. Wtf ever happened telling your children that they are beautiful as they are? These women are literally farming for these kids to be in a therapists chair by 16 smh
What I find extra sad about this, is the fact that if a mother can afford all those expensive products, wouldn't she be able to afford extracurricular activities and courses? For her child's actual development? Sure, maybe the child is already into make-up and skincare because of social media, but like, maybe get them to at least try something else? I don't know how it is in the US, but I did grow up with access to this kind of money, and rather than wasting it on products that are useless to harmful on me I actually got to learn and try a variety of skills...

Thank you! A Sephora brand lip balm, fine. A nice, reasonably priced hand or body cream for after their bath or shower, great. That kind of skincare I can see, especially where I am in the Upper Midwest of the U.S. Winter is harsh on all skin and moisturizing is a good thing to get in the habit of using. But targeted skincare like retinols?! I’d have to ask a dermatologist, but that sounds like it’s asking for trouble in a tweenager or younger child. I dare say even idiotic.
As someone who is a literal kid, i always feel bad for the workers as soon as i walk into a sephora. I couldn’t care less for makeup or skin care or whatever but i hate it when my mom goes in there cuz then i have to go in and i get stares as if i even wanna be there, one of the workers was talking to a customer about how it was so messy and she looked at me and them said “yeah it’s the kids who make it a mess” :(
saddest part to me is that they go "they need to learn about skincare early" while letting them absolutely destroy their skin so when they really do need skincare they'll need to actually get medical grade stuff or oral medicine to "fix" whatever the hell they caused
Also let's not lie to ourselves, skincare really won't make that much of a difference. Hormone balance and diet has way more of an impact on skin than skincare ever will. And nobody needs antiaging stuff before the age of 21-25
Tbh i feel if people really need skincare they should just go to a dermatologist in the first place. Like stop buying all these random products??? Dermatologists know more about skincare than drunk elephant or whatever. I’m 23 with acne been going to the dermatologist since 21 and the products im on help me a lot AND they’re cheaper

Then what will be even worse is that I can foresee that the insurance companies are not gonna shell out several thousands worth of products because it IS all the parents fault. I don't even use anything but lotion. I came across some chick's complaining about dry tight skin AFTER they had used a face wash around FIVE times. This wasn't even just soap, like a acid based face wash. It was so tempting to tell them that they were stupid and to just use a moisturizer instead of basically a chemical peel to clean their face.

The whole phenomenon of Sephora kids is absolutely devastating to me because its just further shows just how much we, as a society, push beauty standards onto girls at such a young age. Because why else would a literal elementary schooler so strongly believe that they NEED to have a beauty and skincare routine with more steps then most teens and young adults?

"and now I have a mini bestie to go with me.." And THAT'S the problem. That statement is so telling. So many parents act like their child is meant to be their friend. When I was a teacher I had a mom in tears at a parent-teacher conference who didn't understand why her 5-year-old was mean to her and not her friend. Dad and I had to explain that she was her mom, not her bestie.
I can bet those moms will start emotionally and mentally abusing their daughters once they start exerting independent desire outside of being mommy's dress up doll. It doesn't have to be them not liking makeup anymore either, it could be something smaller like not wanting to do their makeup the exact way mom does it

It has only one end and that is "massive dramas and struggles during teen and later years because daughter is growing up and realizes its NOT cool or fun to always be dealing with a clingy controlling mommy!" Such parenting leaves no room for self-discovery because deviation from what the parent living through you wants to experience (or re-experience) produces fear and anger in the parent. The parent will then try to crack-down on their "suddenly misbehaved teen" who will triple down themselves on trying to break out of mommy-dearest's controlling clinginess, which will hurt mommy's feelings, thus creating a cycle that spins out eventually on fight after fight over what mommy wants vs. what the slowly-turning-adult teen wants in life. In the end, both will have major issues and need professional help. Literally this NEVER goes well and will NOT ever go well, precisely because the adult tried to make a bestie out of a kid they were supposed to raise. If the adults mindset is on being friends first, they don't act with the strictness or directness that a child requires from their parent, thus the child learns less and learns more difficultly. They will always grow up eventually though and when they do they will have their own friends and will not want to spend all their time hanging out with a parent that just wants them to continue doing all the things THEY love to do (which is what they're pushing onto the 10 year olds now). What MOMMY wants to do is go to sephora and right now that's lining up with the kid's interests because its trendy and they want to be like mommy. What about when the kid grows into a teen and decides "wait, I HATE this girly cr@p and I really want to start going ROCK CLIMBING and doing JUJITSU and I want to skateboard!" or any combination of things that are not focused on activities that MOMMY likes to do (like going to Sephora and doing 'typically feminine' things)? The kids like what the parents like because its what the parents like. When they grow up and start discovering what THEY like for themselves, it doesn't necessarily align with what the parents liked to do. The parents, on the other hand, have finished developing and have already learned their tastes, so they won't be growing and changing with the child. So... it's literally impossible NOT to wind up having created a big mess that will only cause the parent who did this to spin out, esp. if they were counting the kid as their only friend. It's inevitable that parent will end up back in the sad lonely swamp, because the kid will have their own friends and want to do their own things as they get more adult and independent.
What drives me wild is that we’re in the middle of an economic crisis and somehow these parents magically have the money for their little kids to spend on luxury skincare. They’re literally raising little consumers that will have little to no impulse control when they get older.

It’s mostly false… they are spending money they don’t have to keep up with society and brag on social media. Most of those people are in extreme debt and use credit cards like candy. You really don’t realize how much money you waste until you do strict budgeting and stop falling for fast fashion and make up trends. The most liberating feeling is having no house payment, no car payments and using only cash/debt cards. Society and big corporations want us in debt.

My 6 and 9 year old daughters accompany me to Sephora because I have things to pick up for ME. Its "my store" because Im a grown-up. If they both behave (walking feet, indoor voices, no shoving, no whining, no impolite language) while mom picks up age-appropriate skincare, they can each pick one of the little Sephora brand lipglosses at the counter (which are still like seven motherfucking dollars apiece) so they can feel like they "went shopping with mom". Y'know. Just a little treat. My 9 year old asked why she can't also buy retinol cream and expensive foundation, which is a reasonable question. I told her "Because you're a child and you don't need it". Thats it. Thats all parents have to do. Tell them fucking "No" and don't reneg on it. And that little lipgloss treat goes out the fucking window if they're rude to employees or start finger-fucking the sample products. They know they are to look with eyes, not hands, and treat everyone kindly. If they don't, no treat. Tell your kids "No", fellow Millenial parents. I am fucking BEGGING you.
All little girls love makeup and want to look like mom. That's why we had these shitty greasy "palettes" as kids with 30 shades of "gloss". They don't need anything more. I love the way you include them with the little gloss without folding under the social media pressure 🙌🏻
I’m currently dealing with with an 11 year old trying to to convince me why she needs stuff from Sephora she argues saying I get it so apparently that means the unemployed child should too 🤦🏼♀️ I about sold her when she was caught using my tacha indigo cream 😡 she is desperate to use the stuff but she is 11 heck my 14 year old daughter don’t even ask for this stuff like she does she gets drug store makeup sometimes uses my eyeliner tho 😂
@janee3339 I totally get where she's coming from. Its that weird tween peer pressure. When I was about 12-ish, everyone went apeshit for those yellow silicone Livestrong bands. Its was like the first real viral trend and I would have sold my soul for one. I didn't actually "get" the idea behind the band, just like these kids don't really get why they would need intensive skincare, but damn do they NEEEEED it. I feel like that's no one's fault but target marketing, and the developing brain wanting more than anything to fit in. Hopefully a new, less skin-damaging and expensive fad comes around to distract these kids from $75 retinol drops.
My parents had the *”Want vs Need”* rule. If you *want* something you need to use pocket money. If you *need* something (=necessities like school supplies, new trainers for sports class, a new winter coat because you grew out of yours, hygiene products etc.) they are going to take care of it. I always really appreciated this because 1. It taught you to manage your pocket money 2. It taught you the distinction between a want and a need 3. it taught me to save up for things I wanted. In Germany the branch of the government that’s responsible for like children and family affairs releases a document with their recommendations for pocket money based on age etc. and my parents pretty much stuck with that (like 10€ for 10 year olds, 20-30€ for 13-16, 50€ for 16-18 I believe)
Today I saw A child at the candy shop who said "I dOnT care about make up or skincare, I just want to eat candy and play tag!" To their mother. I was so happy to hear that are so kids who are actually acting like kids.

Because of these people, whenever i take my little sister, (13), to Sephora, to buy her a treat, (nothing crazy, mostly mini's, lip stuff, perfumes, depending on the occasion), a staff member quite literally followed us around. She feels such an aversion going into a Sephora, because of all these Sephora Kids, and she does not (rightly so) want to be taken for one.
What is sad is that there aren't anymore Disney stores or clothing stores with toys and tube slides and small playgrounds inside like there were back in the 90s and 2000s for these kids to play in. So now millennial mothers are taking them into make up stores for the kids to buy things they shouldn't be using at their age. So sad.

It's crazy how these mothers are exploiting their children for followers. I'm 16 and I've only ever got 2 things from Sephora a lip balm and face mask from the Sephora brand. I could never imagine spending $90 on a product. Or even $40 for a lip oil.
I’m 21 and only got like 2 things from Sephora too 😭 it’s crazy that these parents are taking freaking 10 year olds and a 6 YEAR OLD there and they spend almost $100. I wasn’t even interested in makeup until I started high school when I was 14.
I'm 20 and while I do have some makeup, I didn't get into makeup until senior year of highschool. I am alternative hence why I enjoy experimenting with makeup. But seeing kids like this is disturbing, when I was that age I was playing with dolls and toys and video games and running around climbing trees. Children are being forced to grow up too fast and it's going to damage them a lot in the future

I am a 34 year old woman with a two income household, and I have had that Charlotte Tilbury bronzer in and out of my Sephora cart for 6 months because I just cannot justify the price. What has the world come to when a 10 year old gets it to play with?!
No literally my siblings are asking for $100+ items. No honey you are getting a $25 dollar spending per week. Then suddenly I’m the bad sister since I don’t buy them stuff. My mom has shown them how much it costs to earn this stuff. But UA-cam has ruined their perception on what is appropriate for their age!
I'm a fully independent adult, but I only wear makeup for formal events, dates, interviews, and for fun when I feel like playing around with them. Since I mostly buy them for fun, you know what brand most of my products are? ELF!! I don't need to worry about wasting or throwing away product when everything in my makeup kit cost less than $10!
It's nuts that the kids said "No deal"? You, as the parent, told them they could choose 1 item, if they say "no deal", then they don't get to go at all. *You're supposed to be the one setting boundaries here, children should not be deciding for themselves what the boundaries are.* Model responsible behavior, these kids will be adults one day and at the very least let them learn some self-regulation and financial management skills. You are not the "cool friend" to your kids, you are the parent, so PARENT.

I just cannot understand how any parent gets this fkd by their own kids. Like why? What is it with them that makes them too stupid to say no to their own children? It's like these are the kids who only ever heard "no" their entire lives, and their revenge is to just never say it to their own kids now they're the parents... I hope those kids all grow up to ruin their parents financially and become the worst most troublesome teens to ever exist on the planet. Let the parents and their entire communities find out how absolute SH1T it was to ever raise a kid this poorly. My mother would NEVER. If my sister and I had tried any such thing, she'd have turned the whole car around and just plain refused to even finish the errands or anything. She'd be like "and now you get nothing. Good work!" Or even worse, she'd act like we said nothing at all, let us go in and look at things and when we go to pick items she'd just be like "Oh, I'm sorry, do YOU have money? You said no deal, so NO DEAL. You get nothing." then she'd hold to it, make us watch her buy whatever she was in there for (and best bet she'd decided in that moment to get something just to rub it in that we had behaved poorly, if she hadn't planned to get anything prior to leaving for the shop). We learned very quickly on in life NOT to doubt mom's word or to try to negotiate unless it was something REALLY necessary and we WOULD need to *_prove beyond all doubt_* that the thing we wanted that was not agreed to WAS needed enough to make her relent. Negotiations would almost always mean "you talked back and you were acting greedy. We do not reward greed." and that would mean you would get NOTHING instead of the smaller something that was offered. By the time I had hit 10 I KNEW not to try to negotiate if I wanted what was offered I took what was offered as it was offered to me and I was grateful for it. I had learned by 10 that if I was greedy and pushy and threw tantrums I got NOTHING, but if I behaved and was polite and appreciative I would get treats here and there and occasionally I would be allowed to have a thing I asked for when in a store IF THERE WAS MONEY. I also knew by 10 that "Getting extras" depended on "if we have the money" and that "we didn't have the money" often - so that meant we were not rich people. It was basic, but I understood that things cost money, that daddy worked hard for the money we had, that we didn't always have enough for everything and that because of this it meant I could not always expect or ask for things. That didn't stop either of us from checking (asking for things) but it did mean we respected when we were told no (for the most part - we were kids after all so poor moods and being tired would occasionally cause tantrums that were grown out of as we came into preteens and teen years each). When you actually apply COMPASSIONATE discipline that seeks to educate as well as provide structure, you raise kids into adults who will function. My parents could have done more to teach us about money from a young age (particularly how to budget and balance bills etc. by showing us how they do it) but they at least tried to make us respect money and how it should be saved not spent as soon as you get it. I cry for the future adults these kids will become, for the way they will struggle when they try to leave the (clearly financially abled) family and realize that nothing they make will ever provide them with the life their mommy and daddy provided (unless they marry rich or work REALLY hard after being brought up to barely ever work for anything they get). They'll have sh1t budgeting and financing mentalities and they'll have a low level of tolerance for hard work to earn. These kids will suffer in so many ways, its beyond depressing to think about.

There isn't a Sephora in my country but even then I would only buy some foundation and a small pallet of eyeshadow because I'm allowed some makeup. Yeah Sephora kids just need to stop, I'm 13 and it's gross that they're spending so much money on products when their kids don't even need/are too young for it.
When I went to Sephora with my mother, when I was young, she would get me one of those animal facemasks, and I would just look at perfume or random stuff with art I like on it the whole time it’s not like it’s hard to be a good parent while still bringing your kids to Sephora or any other make up stores it’s entirely the parents and social medias fault.

I am finding it deeply disturbing every time one of the parents justifies this behavior as "just starting a skincare/makeup collection early". These products EXPIRE! They have a shelf life from the second those 10 yr old hands touch it. This is only teaching them to start buying something expensive, and keep buying the expensive product, over and over again because someone else enjoys it.

So many of millennials often talk about how they all have eating disorders, body dysmorphia and unhealthy relationships with food because of the early 2000's "trends" of fat shaming, diet culture etc. But many millennial parents fail to recognize how they are no better towards their own kids because these poor young girls will now grow up just as insecure as their mother's did but with a whole new set of deep insecurities. For a generation that constantly talks about "breaking cycles", they are definitely keeping the cycles of self-loathing and deep insecurity alive and well.
Its kinda sad on how probably these girls are gonna grow up to be insanely insecure or even worse just because they're moms let them do it and they think they'll have to wear constant makeup and always use skincare :(

these mothers are insane, im so glad my mom raised me right. im 19 and only stepped foot in a sephora LAST MONTH WITH MY MOM and i got 2 things that i ACTUALLY needed 😭 it was literally my moms first time in there too, we buy everything from walgreens or CVS but my mom had a lot of gift cards and invited me to go with her

I'm 14 and and only can take my mom's old products she doesn't want. I was allowed in Ulta at 12-ish? but wasn't allowed makeup and was only allowed lip gloss and hair accessories im so glad i wasn't raised like those kids

These parent don't actually want to parent. They are the same types to moan and complain that laws need to change to protect their kids. And take away adults rights. Like in California they banned flavored vape because "the children". Like banning it only means kids can get access to it without having to show ID. When I was a kid, it was considered scandalous that there were girls in middle school wearing makeup. My cousin got into an argument with my parents when she was living with us for a year because she wanted to wear makeup to school at 13.

One of the worst parts is the mom making their daughters their “bestie”. As someone who was raised as their mother’s best friend, it is awesome as an adult but can come with several downsides as a child.
When the kid is a minor it is the parent's job to be a parent. When the kid is an adult and are fully functioning in the real world as an adult then the relationship can change into a friendship.
At 12 I was obsessed with makeup. I know that sounds weird, but I wasn’t obsessed with it for myself. Infact I hated how it felt. But I was obsessed with putting it on anyone that would let me. I would wake up early and beg my mom to let me do her makeup. I would try all sorts of makeup styles out. I often also did makeup on my grandma, cousins, sister, and friends. This continued to my adulthood and I still love it. Currently in school to become a professional makeup artist now. :) This might be a little off topic but I just wanted to share it.

It really is about the parenting. Me and my sisters were raised with pretty strict parents on this stuff, and none of us did make up until at least 18. We saw our mom do her hair and makeup everyday, hell even helped her dye her hair, but all that stuff didn't interest us at all. I've noticed it's the mothers who are into makeup and don't really seem to bond well with their kids who are using makeup as a common interest, as a way to finally bond.

My mom used to always say "I'm your mom, not your friend". At the time I didn't understand it but now I am so grateful she did that. As a parent you need to have some balls and set proper boundaries if you truly want what's best for your kid. And now that I’m an adult my mom and I are closer than ever. My best friend grew up with a friend-mom and now their relationship is weird. Think about the long term, people!
I’m a stepmom to three. They are young adults now but their mom made things extremely difficult for me. Between wanting to be their friend instead of their mom or ditching them altogether all the time, I was always the bad guy in the end.

My dad was the type to call me his friend and his daughter but our relationship was very co dependent as with him relying on me to make him feel better whenever his mental issues get triggered which in turn ruined my mental health. Though there's nothing wrong being close and all with your parents, I'm actually close to my mom. But it seems like these moms are also very dependent on the kids, either it's from giving the kids whatever they want to be loved or living through their kid or wanting fame from their kid. Those type of relationships are tricky and there are ways to navigate it to avoid it turning that way. Like if they really want to bond over makeup then they should have just went to a Clare's.

Same here, I'm 22 but when I was a kid my parents let me be a kid, I still sometimes have moments where I still feel like a kid. Honestly seeing how kids are like these days, I'm happy I grew up during simpler and better times before all this tiktok nonsense. The only gripe I have is not being born even earlier. I think my cousins who were born in the 90s had it better than I did. They got to experience the old school family road trips with paper maps and getting lost and such, and got to grow up in a time before the internet, in a time when corner stores were still a thing and kids would play together in the neighborhood and buy treats from the corner store. Even when I was a kid all these things were already fading away, or gone entirely. And now they're completely gone, gone are the days when kids would play together after school in the neighborhood, and actually have quality play time and bonding time with friends and peers, kids would just go home to play on their electronic devices nowadays.
@@karltsang1189 my country was still stuck in the 90s when I was growing up, so my childhood was exactly like that- playing outside from the morning till night with all neighbors, playing fun games, making up the games ourselves so we could stay entertained etc. half of us didn't even know what internet and computers were until early 2010s. it was such a fun time. the last time I played outside was in 2015 because most kids were already teenagers in high school, so it wasn't cool for them anymore. I loved my childhood and even if we had computers at home, going out with friends outside to play was far more interesting. it's creepy to me how the world has changed more in the last 5 years than it did in between 2000s and late 2010s.

This is bananas. I started with “skin care” at age 7 due to some specific dermatologic issues, and I started wearing makeup at 12 because I’ve always loved it. But at 12 I took my happy ass to the drugstore that was within walking distance and bought basic Cover Girl out of my allowance. If I had rudely demanded expensive cosmetics, or if I had run wild and trashed the Estée Lauder counter, I’d STILL be grounded, 40 years later.

I’m 12 years old and people my age are bragging about having a 15 step skincare routine. 15?! I don’t even have a skincare routine. My family doesn’t have that kind of money to waste on skincare and makeup. The one thing I have ever got from Sephora is a Laneige lip thing. Personally, I think that kids my age and younger DO NOT NEED THAT KIND OF CRAP FROM SEPHORA.

I always had accommodations as a kid, since *sKiN cOnDiTiOnS aRe FuN🤩* and my acne was AWFUL. But seriously I WAS AWARE I STARTED EARLY, BECAUSE MOST KIDS DIDN’T HAVE SKIN LIKE MINE. It scares me that this is becoming normalized: my acne was so bad that I would cry about it, and if I brushed some of it, it’d irritate me, so I literally had to use products for healthy skin, but it was always things that my mother and I read and researched the ingredients of. I never used adult products, because it wasn’t meant for my skin, but now we’re normalizing children’s usage of products for GROWN ADULTS?!

I remember going there once with my mom and I heard behind a little girl asking her mom if she can wear make up and her mother went “No you’re too young.” And I smiled cuz I felt like it was rare now to see mothers not wanting their very little girls wearing make up.
My mom let me wear a pink lipstick of her's with my Cinderella dress when I was 6 years old, and it was an HONOR! It was SPECIAL because I was dressing up and wanted to be pretty! I also never, EVER looked at my mother's makeup routine and thought "I want to do that!" because I saw my mum in makeup so often that I kind of assumed she just always looked like that. The mom saying "she's gonna be curious seeing me with makeup!" is either not handling her daughter's curiosity appropriately (take her to Claire's, teach her how you do YOUR makeup but set boundaries over what and when she can wear certain things) or, even worse, she's simply ASSUMING her daughter is curious and wanting the make-up.
That was the worst to me, that she just assumed her daughter will be curious sbout it no question. I was a very gender-nonconforming kid. I vocalized clearly that I disliked red and especially pink as a kid, and I rather wanted pokemon/dinosaur/animal shirts to wear than anything princess/fairy/mermaid related. I even refused to wear primcess stuff to my friend's princess-themed birthdays. And all of those things were age-appropriate to me as a kid, but I was still feeling discomfort due to the expectation that I should like something like that. Imagine if her daughter isn't actually that much into girly stuff, and on the top of that, your mum would strongly push you into feminine, age-inappropriate stuff 🤮
I remember the first time I wore makeup I was 10 and it was just a tiny bit of mascara, because I was dressing up as a bride. It's crazy how these kids are so obsessed with makeup. I once saw a 4th grader with a full face of makeup when I was in 8th grade, wearing only a little bit of black eye pencil. I feel bad for them
I’ll say one more thing, this Christmas I got my kids a body mist set and a bubble bath set, do you know what they did with it? They made potions with it. They didn’t do a get ready with me, they didn’t throw a fit because it didn’t like the scent or the brand, they used it for potions. It hurts my heart to think they were pushing them to grow up this fast.

Same. As a 19 year old I still get excited over the smallest things. I got my first phone when I was 12. I was so scared to ask my mom to buy me some computer game membership when I was younger and it took a lot of convincing until she eventually agreed. I pretty much grew up playing outside the entire day (aside from going to school) and then watching a movie together with my parents in the evening. As a fellow gen z, I am scared. This is freaking scary. These kids aren’t ever going to experience climbing a tree, falling in love with a book, or even making stuff and selling it at a yard sale. Society is honestly doomed. This is literally so horrifying. I, not once, ever asked my mom to take me to a Sephora as a child. I think I walked in with her ONCE, and I was scared because it was overstimulating and it felt like a different planet. I was kind of obsessed with makeup from a pretty young age but was not allowed to buy it. Lip gloss was all my sister and I were allowed to purchase or wear until we were about 14. At age 14 we could buy makeup with our own money. We were not choosing pricey items. Heck, I thought Cover Girl was expensive.😂

A few days ago, some 10 year olds (at the most), were walking around with their Fast food drinks in hand, holding their Mecca bags, strutting down the Mall like teeagers, and more 10 year olds in Mecca then 16 year old girls dragging around their boyfriend to go makeup shopping. Like a little stiff paper bag with the brand name on it. Edit story: For the very few amount of 10 year olds WITH parents present, they had Mecca gift cards, and were talking about how so boy (they probably have a boyfriend) or someone that got some makeup thing. My daughter at 15 thought she might want to try foundation and blush, I was so impressed at the time the beauty consultant told my daughter, the longer she keeps her face clean and continues to use a good moisturizer she is preserving her natural beauty. So in return we concentrated on good cleaning products and established a routine. Of course this was back in the early 90's.

17 year old here 🙋, when I was 10 I was excited for my little pony dolls from McDonald's. Also, I've never had any kind of allowance because we're poor. I honestly don't even use makeup, nor am I interested in it. This is absolutely insane to me.

I remember being little watching my mom do her makeup and I would beg her to do mine or let me play with it and she would always tell me "no you're too little you don't need it." I remember crying because I thought she was being mean by not letting me but as an adult I'm thankful she didn't let me. Could you imagine the self image issues these girls are going to have when they're older? I genuinely feel sorry for them.
Lol in middle school I only had an essence mascara and a 5€ kiko tinted lip balm. And still my mom would only only let me wear the mascara on special occasions, not to go to school
In my opinion, these moms just have shopping addictions that they value over actual friendships/relationships so they force the only person they can to join them. It's also, again in my opinion, laziness and not wanting to play with your kids. So, you make them "play" with things YOU (the parents) want to do instead.
Well, my parents gave me books to ‘play with’ and send me to different activity classes. If parents can’t or too lazy to play with their kids at least give them something useful. 😅

They could go find afterschool and weekend activities to drop them off at. They could take the 100s of $$$ they spend on Sephora and pay a fking nanny or sitter to do homework help and play time. They could actually invest in some "boredom buster" activities that produce little mess but hours of entertainment for the kids to leave you alone. You could just take them to a kids-play place and pay a sitter to watch them there for a few hours... At the very least, you could invest in some edu-tainment games and videos and sit them down with THOSE (laziest form but a few steps up from TV or iPad as sitter). If you want them to do something with you that YOU will also enjoy, how about picking a game to play together that's within range of their age or which isn't too horrible content wise to share with a kid so long as they only play with you. You could literally get pokemon and play it with them... Bonus, they'd play it on their own too if they liked that one. There's all kinds of ways to entertain the kids that you can do as a lazy person that AREN'T nearly half as detrimental to them as just dropping them off at a mall to run wild or letting them buy and use whatever they want from adult makeup and skincare brands.

I'm 21. The only makeup I ever use is regular lipstick, and only if I feel extra fancy. To be fair, having sensitive skin probably did influence me somewhat, but I just never was into makeup. It is absolutely insane to me that these children are buying over 100 dollars worth of makeup that they just want to play with.

11:40 For my 6th birthday, I had a birthday party at Justice. We were able to fill up a tiny bag with 5 or 10 items that we wanted and then we all got makeovers done. The difference here is that THIS WAS AT A STORE TARGETED TOWARDS CHILDREN and we weren't getting makeup products that were ridiculously expensive and made for grown adults.
That was one of the best birthday parties I've ever had as a child.

I never really got into the whole makeup thing other than the quick powder, eyeliner, mascara blush and eyebrow pencil. On in 5 minutes or less probably. My skin is sensitive and easily breaks out with foundation. I really don't need foundation, so that's helpful. But my dentist gives out chapsticks made of beeswax and kid scents like grape and watermelon. I tried one, unaware it was scented and was in Heaven. Sent me back to being a kid when that's what we had. Bubblegum (clear) scented lipgloss, and fruit scents. Those are so fun. What's wrong with these mothers? Didn't they have a childhood? 😢
I'm a tomboy my daughter is an extreme girly girl. She gets super sparkly eye shadows, lipsticks nail polish blushes, brushes (no eyeliner or mascara) came in a cute little box with a mirror. The nail polish is non toxic and peels off, the makeup is non toxic and safe for sensitive skin. She knows she is NOT allowed to leave out of the house with it but can wear gloss/chapstick. Spent total $50 on everything.😂
I only wore makeup twice, and never used any creams or cleansers on my skin. I was a child who has sensitive skin as an adult, I suffer dermatitis all over, not just on my face, but everywhere. When I was a kid, I was learning how to be self-sufficient, learning to clean up my house, playing outside, using my imagination, reading a book, learning to crochet at fifteen...... why not teach these children how to read and write, or send them outside, allow them to get filthy, and teach them how to crochet or knit? At ten years old, I was grieving a loss, but also learning how to keep house. I was learning how to iron harder clothes, like shirts and dresses, not worrying about my skincare. I was excited for the usual kid things. At eleven, I was getting ready for two trips to a bush children's home. At thirteen, I was getting ready to better understand my body, and being bullied constantly throughout everything. I am no oil painting (plain jane) but this generation is getting ridiculous .

Like.. back at these kids' age I was still playing with toys, play makeup sets, toy kitchens and dollies, or I'd just do chores to get extra pocket money so I can buy a bar of chocolate or so. My mom was the same too! I've seen her wear makeup on almost a daily basis, but never took interest in it until I was 18 - 20. But she has always told me that you don't need makeup until you're an adult.
i'm 13, and I use skincare (i have severe acne and such so i kinda have to so i don't feel gross and its good for me), my skin has gotten to the point where its pretty clear, and i'm just using some tinted moisterizer to cover up and acne scars and some dark circles. Thank you! A Sephora brand lip balm, fine. A nice, reasonably priced hand or body cream for after their bath or shower, great. That kind of skincare I can see, especially where I am in the Upper Midwest of the U.S. Winter is harsh on all skin and moisturizing is a good thing to get in the habit of using.
But targeted skincare like retinols?! I’d have to ask a dermatologist, but that sounds like it’s asking for trouble in a tweenager or younger child. I dare say even idiotic.
As someone who is a literal kid, i always feel bad for the workers as soon as i walk into a sephora. I couldn’t care less for makeup or skin care or whatever but i hate it when my mom goes in there cuz then i have to go in and i get stares as if i even wanna be there, one of the workers was talking to a customer about how it was so messy and she looked at me and them said “yeah it’s the kids who make it a mess” :(

saddest part to me is that they go "they need to learn about skincare early" while letting them absolutely destroy their skin so when they really do need skincare they'll need to actually get medical grade stuff or oral medicine to "fix" whatever the hell they caused

I came across some chick's complaining about dry tight skin AFTER they had used a face wash around FIVE times. This wasn't even just soap, like a acid based face wash. It was so tempting to tell them that they were stupid and to just use a moisturizer instead of basically a chemical peel to clean their face.

Such parenting leaves no room for self-discovery because deviation from what the parent living through you wants to experience (or re-experience) produces fear and anger in the parent. The parent will then try to crack-down on their "suddenly misbehaved teen" who will triple down themselves on trying to break out of mommy-dearest's controlling clinginess, which will hurt mommy's feelings, thus creating a cycle that spins out eventually on fight after fight over what mommy wants vs. what the slowly-turning-adult teen wants in life. In the end, both will have major issues and need professional help.
Literally this NEVER goes well and will NOT ever go well, precisely because the adult tried to make a bestie out of a kid they were supposed to raise. If the adults mindset is on being friends first, they don't act with the strictness or directness that a child requires from their parent, thus the child learns less and learns more difficultly. They will always grow up eventually though and when they do they will have their own friends and will not want to spend all their time hanging out with a parent that just wants them to continue doing all the things THEY love to do (which is what they're pushing onto the 10 year olds now). What MOMMY wants to do is go to sephora and right now that's lining up with the kid's interests because its trendy and they want to be like mommy. What about when the kid grows into a teen and decides "wait, I HATE this girly cr@p and I really want to start going ROCK CLIMBING and doing JUJITSU and I want to skateboard!" or any combination of things that are not focused on activities that MOMMY likes to do (like going to Sephora and doing 'typically feminine' things)?
The kids like what the parents like because its what the parents like. When they grow up and start discovering what THEY like for themselves, it doesn't necessarily align with what the parents liked to do. The parents, on the other hand, have finished developing and have already learned their tastes, so they won't be growing and changing with the child. So... it's literally impossible NOT to wind up having created a big mess that will only cause the parent who did this to spin out, esp. if they were counting the kid as their only friend. It's inevitable that parent will end up back in the sad lonely swamp, because the kid will have their own friends and want to do their own things as they get more adult and independent.
What drives me wild is that we’re in the middle of an economic crisis and somehow these parents magically have the money for their little kids to spend on luxury skincare. They’re literally raising little consumers that will have little to no impulse control when they get older.
That’s what’s scare me the most. I have a good jobs and I couldn’t imagine spending that much money on skin care.

It’s mostly false… they are spending money they don’t have to keep up with society and brag on social media. Most of those people are in extreme debt and use credit cards like candy. You really don’t realize how much money you waste until you do strict budgeting and stop falling for fast fashion and make up trends. The most liberating feeling is having no house payment, no car payments and using only cash/debt cards. Society and big corporations want us in debt.

My 6 and 9 year old daughters accompany me to Sephora because I have things to pick up for ME. Its "my store" because Im a grown-up. If they both behave (walking feet, indoor voices, no shoving, no whining, no impolite language) while mom picks up age-appropriate skincare, they can each pick one of the little Sephora brand lipglosses at the counter (which are still like seven motherfucking dollars apiece) so they can feel like they "went shopping with mom". @janee3339 I totally get where she's coming from. Its that weird tween peer pressure. When I was about 12-ish, everyone went apeshit for those yellow silicone Livestrong bands. Its was like the first real viral trend and I would have sold my soul for one.
I didn't actually "get" the idea behind the band, just like these kids don't really get why they would need intensive skincare, but damn do they NEEEEED it.
I feel like that's no one's fault but target marketing, and the developing brain wanting more than anything to fit in. Hopefully a new, less skin-damaging and expensive fad comes around to distract these kids from $75 retinol drops.

My parents had the *”Want vs Need”* rule. If you *want* something you need to use pocket money. If you *need* something (=necessities like school supplies, new trainers for sports class, a new winter coat because you grew out of yours, hygiene products etc.) they are going to take care of it. I always really appreciated this because 1. It taught you to manage your pocket money 2. It taught you the distinction between a want and a need 3. it taught me to save up for things I wanted.
In Germany the branch of the government that’s responsible for like children and family affairs releases a document with their recommendations for pocket money based on age etc. and my parents pretty much stuck with that (like 10€ for 10 year olds, 20-30€ for 13-16, 50€ for 16-18 I believe)

Because of these people, whenever i take my little sister, (13), to Sephora, to buy her a treat, (nothing crazy, mostly mini's, lip stuff, perfumes, depending on the occasion), a staff member quite literally followed us around. She feels such an aversion going into a Sephora, because of all these Sephora Kids, and she does not (rightly so) want to be taken for one.

What is sad is that there aren't anymore Disney stores or clothing stores with toys and tube slides and small playgrounds inside like there were back in the 90s and 2000s for these kids to play in. My mother would NEVER. If my sister and I had tried any such thing, she'd have turned the whole car around and just plain refused to even finish the errands or anything. She'd be like "and now you get nothing. Good work!"
Or even worse, she'd act like we said nothing at all, let us go in and look at things and when we go to pick items she'd just be like "Oh, I'm sorry, do YOU have money? You said no deal, so NO DEAL. You get nothing." then she'd hold to it, make us watch her buy whatever she was in there for (and best bet she'd decided in that moment to get something just to rub it in that we had behaved poorly, if she hadn't planned to get anything prior to leaving for the shop). We learned very quickly on in life NOT to doubt mom's word or to try to negotiate unless it was something REALLY necessary and we WOULD need to *_prove beyond all doubt_* that the thing we wanted that was not agreed to WAS needed enough to make her relent.
Negotiations would almost always mean "you talked back and you were acting greedy. We do not reward greed." and that would mean you would get NOTHING instead of the smaller something that was offered. By the time I had hit 10 I KNEW not to try to negotiate if I wanted what was offered I took what was offered as it was offered to me and I was grateful for it. I had learned by 10 that if I was greedy and pushy and threw tantrums I got NOTHING, but if I behaved and was polite and appreciative I would get treats here and there and occasionally I would be allowed to have a thing I asked for when in a store IF THERE WAS MONEY. I also knew by 10 that "Getting extras" depended on "if we have the money" and that "we didn't have the money" often - so that meant we were not rich people.
It was basic, but I understood that things cost money, that daddy worked hard for the money we had, that we didn't always have enough for everything and that because of this it meant I could not always expect or ask for things. That didn't stop either of us from checking (asking for things) but it did mean we respected when we were told no (for the most part - we were kids after all so poor moods and being tired would occasionally cause tantrums that were grown out of as we came into preteens and teen years each).
When you actually apply COMPASSIONATE discipline that seeks to educate as well as provide structure, you raise kids into adults who will function. My parents could have done more to teach us about money from a young age (particularly how to budget and balance bills etc. by showing us how they do it) but they at least tried to make us respect money and how it should be saved not spent as soon as you get it.
I cry for the future adults these kids will become, for the way they will struggle when they try to leave the (clearly financially abled) family and realize that nothing they make will ever provide them with the life their mommy and daddy provided (unless they marry rich or work REALLY hard after being brought up to barely ever work for anything they get). They'll have sh1t budgeting and financing mentalities and they'll have a low level of tolerance for hard work to earn. These kids will suffer in so many ways, its beyond depressing to think about.

So many of millennials often talk about how they all have eating disorders, body dysmorphia and unhealthy relationships with food because of the early 2000's "trends" of fat shaming, diet culture etc. But many millennial parents fail to recognize how they are no better towards their own kids because these poor young girls will now grow up just as insecure as their mother's did but with a whole new set of deep insecurities. For a generation that constantly talks about "breaking cycles", they are definitely keeping the cycles of self-loathing and deep insecurity alive and well.

My mom used to always say "I'm your mom, not your friend". At the time I didn't understand it but now I am so grateful she did that. As a parent you need to have some balls and set proper boundaries if you truly want what's best for your kid. And now that I’m an adult my mom and I are closer than ever. I’m a stepmom to three. They are young adults now but their mom made things extremely difficult for me. Between wanting to be their friend instead of their mom or ditching them altogether all the time, I was always the bad guy in the end.
@CubsGirl79 I'm sorry you had to go through that. 🩷 My mom went through the same with my step-sister (also an adult and older than me), and to this day she looks at my mom as some villain, even though she was loving towards her and set the boundaries for respect that her actual mother never bothered to set. I hope that your step daughters realize that you were actually doing what was best for them in the end.
My dad was the type to call me his friend and his daughter but our relationship was very co dependent as with him relying on me to make him feel better whenever his mental issues get triggered which in turn ruined my mental health. Though there's nothing wrong being close and all with your parents, I'm actually close to my mom. But it seems like these moms are also very dependent on the kids, either it's from giving the kids whatever they want to be loved or living through their kid or wanting fame from their kid. Those type of relationships are tricky and there are ways to navigate it to avoid it turning that way. Like if they really want to bond over makeup then they should have just went to a Clare's.

I'm glad I was born to parents who allowed me to be a child and not grow up so fast. must be why I still feel like a kid from time to time, even though I'm 21. I feel so sorry for these little girls who are allowed on social media and even exploited by their own parents on these platforms.

Same here, I'm 22 but when I was a kid my parents let me be a kid, I still sometimes have moments where I still feel like a kid.
Honestly seeing how kids are like these days, I'm happy I grew up during simpler and better times before all this tiktok nonsense. The only gripe I have is not being born even earlier. I think my cousins who were born in the 90s had it better than I did. They got to experience the old school family road trips with paper maps and getting lost and such, and got to grow up in a time before the internet, in a time when corner stores were still a thing and kids would play together in the neighborhood and buy treats from the corner store. Even when I was a kid all these things were already fading away, or gone entirely.
And now they're completely gone, gone are the days when kids would play together after school in the neighborhood, and actually have quality play time and bonding time with friends and peers, kids would just go home to play on their electronic devices nowadays.
@@karltsang1189 my country was still stuck in the 90s when I was growing up, so my childhood was exactly like that- playing outside from the morning till night with all neighbors, playing fun games, making up the games ourselves so we could stay entertained etc. half of us didn't even know what internet and computers were until early 2010s.
it was such a fun time. the last time I played outside was in 2015 because most kids were already teenagers in high school, so it wasn't cool for them anymore.
I loved my childhood and even if we had computers at home, going out with friends outside to play was far more interesting.

This is bananas. I started with “skin care” at age 7 due to some specific dermatologic issues, and I started wearing makeup at 12 because I’ve always loved it. But at 12 I took my happy ass to the drugstore that was within walking distance and bought basic Cover Girl out of my allowance. If I had rudely demanded expensive cosmetics, or if I had run wild and trashed the Estée Lauder counter, I’d STILL be grounded, 40 years later.

If you ever get interested in it? I highly recommend sticking to eyeshadow and lipstick. One pallet with diverse shades or colours you’d use and a small handful of lipsticks, if not just one go-to in your favourite shade. Your skin is fine, I promise. I’m 22 and I got into makeup recently myself, and it’s fun! Obviously you do you, I’m happy for you, I just wanted to pass down some advice

As an Esthetician who is now in school to become a dermatologist, this is a real life horror movie. I can’t imagine what a vet in the field thinks of this mess.

I always had accommodations as a kid, since *sKiN cOnDiTiOnS aRe FuN🤩* and my acne was AWFUL. But seriously I WAS AWARE I STARTED EARLY, BECAUSE MOST KIDS DIDN’T HAVE SKIN LIKE MINE.
It scares me that this is becoming normalized: my acne was so bad that I would cry about it, and if I brushed some of it, it’d irritate me, so I literally had to use products for healthy skin, but it was always things that my mother and I read and researched the ingredients of. I never used adult products, because it wasn’t meant for my skin, but now we’re normalizing children’s usage of products for GROWN ADULTS?!
when my sister and I went with our mum to sephora at their age, it was bc she needed something all we did was beg to leave and go get us legos and food. that was not even 7 years ago. All these parents rush their kids childhood and not only is it affecting their bank accounts but also the kids self-esteem, because imagine your MOTHER telling you that you need makeup to look good and that you have wrinkles

I remember going there once with my mom and I heard behind a little girl asking her mom if she can wear make up and her mother went “No you’re too young.” And I smiled cuz I felt like it was rare now to see mothers not wanting their very little girls wearing make up.
My mom let me wear a pink lipstick of her's with my Cinderella dress when I was 6 years old, and it was an HONOR! It was SPECIAL because I was dressing up and wanted to be pretty!
I also never, EVER looked at my mother's makeup routine and thought "I want to do that!" because I saw my mum in makeup so often that I kind of assumed she just always looked like that. The mom saying "she's gonna be curious seeing me with makeup!" is either not handling her daughter's curiosity appropriately (take her to Claire's, teach her how you do YOUR makeup but set boundaries over what and when she can wear certain things) or, even worse, she's simply ASSUMING her daughter is curious and wanting the make-up.
That was the worst to me, that she just assumed her daughter will be curious sbout it no question. I was a very gender-nonconforming kid. I vocalized clearly that I disliked red and especially pink as a kid, and I rather wanted pokemon/dinosaur/animal shirts to wear than anything princess/fairy/mermaid related. I even refused to wear primcess stuff to my friend's princess-themed birthdays. And all of those things were age-appropriate to me as a kid, but I was still feeling discomfort due to the expectation that I should like something like that. Imagine if her daughter isn't actually that much into girly stuff, and on the top of that, your mum would strongly push you into feminine, age-inappropriate stuff 🤮

I remember the first time I wore makeup I was 10 and it was just a tiny bit of mascara, because I was dressing up as a bride. It's crazy how these kids are so obsessed with makeup. I’ll say one more thing, this Christmas I got my kids a body mist set and a bubble bath set, do you know what they did with it? They made potions with it. They didn’t do a get ready with me, they didn’t throw a fit because it didn’t like the scent or the brand, they used it for potions. It hurts my heart to think they were pushing them to grow up this fast.

I was so scared to ask my mom to buy me some computer game membership when I was younger and it took a lot of convincing until she eventually agreed. I pretty much grew up playing outside the entire day (aside from going to school) and then watching a movie together with my parents in the evening. That was my childhood and looking back I can honestly say it was amazing.

As a fellow gen z, I am scared. This is freaking scary. These kids aren’t ever going to experience climbing a tree, falling in love with a book, or even making stuff and selling it at a yard sale. Society is honestly doomed. This is literally so horrifying. I, not once, ever asked my mom to take me to a Sephora as a child. I think I walked in with her ONCE, and I was scared because it was overstimulating and it felt like a different planet. Like, I remember being really confused and feeling lost because I didn’t understand what was happening or what anything did.
I bet these kids will have a harsh awakening when they get their first paycheck some 10-20 years from now

I was kind of obsessed with makeup from a pretty young age but was not allowed to buy it. Lip gloss was all my sister and I were allowed to purchase or wear until we were about 14. At age 14 we could buy makeup with our own money. We were not choosing pricey items. Heck, I thought Cover Girl was expensive.😂
I'm not even joking. A few days ago, some 10 year olds (at the most), were walking around with their Fast food drinks in hand, holding their Mecca bags, strutting down the Mall like teeagers, and more 10 year olds in Mecca then 16 year old girls dragging around their boyfriend to go makeup shopping. This needs to change. I'm so glad Sephora is taking action.

- I'm fine with 16 year olds with boyfriends, I was just comparing the usual amount of them in makeup stores, to the growing amount of 10 year olds. I am surprised how many MORE 10 year olds there are.
- Mecca is a Makeup store in Oceania
- A Mecca bag is a bag you put your purchased skincare in to hold it. Like a little stiff paper bag with the brand name on it.
Edit story: For the very few amount of 10 year olds WITH parents present, they had Mecca gift cards, and were talking about how so boy (they probably have a boyfriend) or someone that got some makeup thing. Also, there were not supervised 10 year olds with gift cards as well. Mecca needs to take action on this.

My daughter at 15 thought she might want to try foundation and blush, I was so impressed at the time the beauty consultant told my daughter, the longer she keeps her face clean and continues to use a good moisturizer she is preserving her natural beauty. So in return we concentrated on good cleaning products and established a routine. Of course this was back in the early 90's.

I remember being little watching my mom do her makeup and I would beg her to do mine or let me play with it and she would always tell me "no you're too little you don't need it." I remember crying because I thought she was being mean by not letting me but as an adult I'm thankful she didn't let me. In my opinion, these moms just have shopping addictions that they value over actual friendships/relationships so they force the only person they can to join them. It's also, again in my opinion, laziness and not wanting to play with your kids. So, you make them "play" with things YOU (the parents) want to do instead.
Well, my parents gave me books to ‘play with’ and send me to different activity classes. If parents can’t or too lazy to play with their kids at least give them something useful. 😅

@@user-bi8ko7kc6h Exactly! This is what gets me, there are actually OTHER ways they could tend needs of child without impacting their ability to be lazy carcasses. They could go find afterschool and weekend activities to drop them off at. They could take the 100s of $$$ they spend on Sephora and pay a fking nanny or sitter to do homework help and play time. They could actually invest in some "boredom buster" activities that produce little mess but hours of entertainment for the kids to leave you alone. You could just take them to a kids-play place and pay a sitter to watch them there for a few hours... At the very least, you could invest in some edu-tainment games and videos and sit them down with THOSE (laziest form but a few steps up from TV or iPad as sitter).
If you want them to do something with you that YOU will also enjoy, how about picking a game to play together that's within range of their age or which isn't too horrible content wise to share with a kid so long as they only play with you. You could literally get pokemon and play it with them... Bonus, they'd play it on their own too if they liked that one. There's all kinds of ways to entertain the kids that you can do as a lazy person that AREN'T nearly half as detrimental to them as just dropping them off at a mall to run wild or letting them buy and use whatever they want from adult makeup and skincare brands.

I'm 21. The only makeup I ever use is regular lipstick, and only if I feel extra fancy. To be fair, having sensitive skin probably did influence me somewhat, but I just never was into makeup.
