So I've just started my own small business...you 100% have every right to question someone's practices. Being a small business owner doesn't give you an out to overcharge people. If someone is willing to pay for something they will but it doesn't mean everyone will. When starting out you're going to be in the red for a bit because you need to get the supplies and all the extra things. The price for that mug is ridiculous, even "hand made" the size of it doesn't justify the price either.

Is $125 too much for a mug? Yes. Should the buyer have seen the mug has two handles? Uh, yes. Should the buyer have checked the price? Yes. Is this whole thing stupid? Also, YES.
I don't know. After the picture was shown of the strawberry collection stuff just jumbled together on the shelf BEHIND the counter (where you couldn't see the extra handle) and the fact that she never actually picked it up- the worker at the stall did and started wrapping it- it's pretty easy to understand how she could miss the second handle. It's not hard- it just had to be on the side facing away the whole time. Which is definitely not out of the question here once the whole situation was explained.

People need to stop being embarrassed. If something is too expensive you need to tell them NO, you’ve changed your mind about it and do not want it anymore. You are not obligated to buy anything. The person charging you that much should be the one who is embarrassed. Once people stop shame buying their products then those “small business owners” will come back down to earth and either start charging reasonable prices or stop selling all together and taking advantage of people’s kindness. You are NOT cheap for not paying those prices. You are SMART for not being scammed!!

I did that at a Francesca’s clothing store recently because their sale signs were deceptive and a flannel top I wanted was around $60! The sale sign said something like 30% off shirts and sweaters and the flannel was right below that sign, but apparently the flannel wasn’t part of the sale so I said nevermind.
I have no problem walking away when I think something is too expensive. I guess when you are never told no you never tell other the word either and you become just a sheep with your money. Then you wonder why people cannot pay for the basic. For example women have gone insane with all these beauty products. Well the Average American women will spend on average $275k on make up and beauty products. Sorry I would rather have my retirement. Meanwhile we have 8 year old girls asking for facial creams and masks instead of dolls and games.
I worked retail for YEARS. I’ve also owned small businesses, and so has my dad and sisters. Common sense would say that YOU DONT WRAP AN ITEM UNTIL THE PERSON PAYS FOR IT. you also NEVER try to pressure someone into buying your items. The backlash is just not worth it. I worked in a department store that sold custom window coverings. My sales associate was an older woman going through a divorce (she needed money) - we worked on commission, and she would pressure every single customer into buying items that they didn’t want, and too many of them. She would follow them around the store and bug them until they bought something just to get her out of their face. I lost track of the number of times that they returned the items the NEXT DAY- on my shift when they knew she wasn’t going to be there. All the packages were unopened. They never wanted the items to begin with. What made it worse was that the store made her a manager of the department because of the high sales that she had. (Never mind the returns). So she wasn’t actually making the store any money. It still boggles the mind all these years later. I understand putting in loads of time and effort to a product that you hand craft. But bullying buyers into purchasing your products is not the way to go.
As a small business owner myself, I am almost ALWAYS questioning other people's prices (the ones who make the same kind of product as I do). And yes, some folks know nothing and expect us to have factory prices for our handmade goods. But there are also a lot of people who make crap and still charge too much money compared to the amount of work they have put in. Also, I feel like the woman who made the cactus cup is not charging enough. That's another problem, because she gets underpaid and customers will also expect other shop owners to have the same prices

I've watched almost all her videos back a couple years or so ago, she even cuts the handles off this specific mug because she wanted a regular one! From what I've seen the mug was actually 80 bucks American and 120 in Australian dollars, which really isn't her fault because Australia. But her response was super unprofessional and she would have been better off not responding at all.
Agreed. Though I still say that was way overpriced for just cleaning off a mold, painting and firing it. I have a large hand thrown yarn bowl I bought with a pretty intricate design and gradient glazing that's the same price as that with shipping. @@BloodySkullx

I hate it when people compare artists prices as a rebuttal. Shelby is rude and entitled and for molded pottery that is overpriced but do not show me an artist who undervalued their own art as a rebuttal for pricing! 15 dollars for a hand sculpted and hand painted mug is criminal and if i am looking for handcrafted items I expect to pay a handcrafted price. Undervaluing your art is not something to strive for. Bless her for pricing so low but she would be getting a 50 dollar tip for that 15 dollar mug. Loved this video absolutely hated that talking point. I know some artists feel differently and that's fine! But on a whole that point says nothing to me other than artists should starve themselves for their art.
I was thinking the same thing, she should be charging at the very least $30 for those mugs, although she could easily charge $50. Unfortunately, undervaluing her work the way she does negatively impacts full-time artists, although I'm sure her intentions are beautiful.
Undervalued products really ruin the market for handcrafted goods. I've been looking into selling knitted/crocheted items and after crunching the math and comparing the market online... It's heartbreaking. I can't feasibly do it. So many folks just don't charge accordingly for the number of hours spent making the item. And it creates a false idea with buyers that something like a baby blanket is quick, easy and cheap. The cactus lady using her price as a rebuttal is pretty much screwing with buyer expectations.
That's what I was thinking as well. In this cup situation, if you assume that an artist spends 4 hours on a mug (wich is not much if it's actually handmade) and take the average USA hourly pay, plus the raw material price, plus the upkeep of your craftin space, I'd say 120$ is actually quite reasonable.
No exactly because $120 is a lot but it should be more than a normal one. Yes they’re molded but a lot of artists do that because nobody wants to waste time making every mug, putting it in the kiln for pretty much a whole day, glazing it for a few hours, putting it in the kiln again, and then selling it. I would know because i make ceramics- so it’s not fair for people to downplay her work for using molds, but it isn’t fair for her to charge so much even if it wasn’t made from a mold. Because one, the time could be cut in half by using a mold so it’s your own fault it took that long, two, the cup is minuscule there’s no way it’s functional for actual drinks, and three it’s not accessible at all. Not the price and not the material. So she shouldn’t pretend that’s why she made it because it isn’t. I would say $50-$80 is good, because there is genuine effort there. But it’s not functional as she says it is
I agree with almost everything except your very last point. Farmers markets (at least in America) aren't to get things cheaper. It's to purchase items directly from the source as opposed to third party stores. Usually the cost of produce is cheaper, but that's about it.
The two biggest issues here: If you think the price is outrageous, don't buy it. If a customer complained about your business without naming you then take the critique and move on

I work for a non-profit that works with a lot of handmade pottery artists. Not a single mug has ever come anywhere close to that price. Actually hand turned, glazed, designs added to it, etc. The most expensive I think I have ever seen a mug was $60 for something large and very well made with lots of hand painted/drawn details.
Also, Finders Keepers isn't a farmers market, it's a craft fair or makers market. In my experience that's very different demographic in terms of who goes and what kinds of stalls are there. In my experience, the quality and range of handmade items (and thus prices) are much higher generally at a makers market than at a farmer's market.
I think Shelby was in the wrong, but not because of the prices. She behaved poorly and I don't understand with people trying to change the subject as if if she priced the mug at half the price this pity desperate act of hers would be any more acceptable. Also, a small business is a business with less than 100 employees not how many followers you have. Followers mean nothing to the size of your business. Truly! It's one person's word against the other, so I guess we'll never know what really happened in that exchange. But, I cannot fathom how someone can bring themselves to pay for something that they haven't looked at closely enough to notice it has two handles, or without asking the price. For people with anxiety it’s extremely hard to do that. You feel ashamed, embarrassed and think it would just be better to pretend everything is fine and pay for it. Happened to me many times.

I think it's because of mentality that when you come into the shop, you need to buy at least something or you're wasting a seller's time. It's very common in Eastern Europe, where the customer service is very low and workers can literally yell at you (especially elders, they're usually rude towards everyone younger than them) and tell you to go away if you're just strolling around and not buying anything. I experienced it myself and believe me, it makes you very anxious next time you come to the shop or to the market.

7:30 One thing I find very important in critiquing videos like this, is making sure you stick to the facts. Regardless of having 2M followers, that is still a small business. If a business has fewer than 500 employees it is, by definition, a small business. I had once told a woman no while at con bc I couldn’t afford her boxes she made. She made cute wooden boxes and I felt bad about it. But the money I saved I wanted to use on stuff I really wanted and I didn’t like the box enough for that. It would have cost me more than half of what I had saved and I didn’t have a job at the time to make it back. when I told her I couldn’t afford it, she tried to shame me by saying ‘but you bought a ticket to be here’. Basically saying if I couldn’t afford it why did I come. My anxiety shot through the roof with that. I just was like ‘yea sorry’ and walked away. I still get filled with anxiety thinking about it.

I've been to comic conventions, anime, gaming, horror movie conventions, etc. I didn't go to it but I've even heard of wedding conventions I think they had vendors and wedding dresses and stuff I guess lol But yes as Kai said, people set up booths and can sell their own items at literally any of the conventions I've listed. I got a black Mokona and a white Mokona backpack at my 1st anime convention, a Jason Voorhees switch plate at the gaming convention, and autographed celebrity photos at the horror convention. I’m an amature potter I sell my stuff sometimes at art fairs The most expensive thing I’ve ever sold was a very elaborate and large serving plate. (It had hand painted fish on it!) I charged 150 dollars. Now- I threw this, paid for space in a kiln (before I got my own), bought glazes (expensive they are unfairly expensive), paid for space in a kiln again, then sold it. My normal prices are 20-50 dollars depending on size! It’s a hobby for me! And I’m so happy when I can sell them but if something doesn’t sell- I lower the price for the next day. Most of the pottery at this art fair is around the same price- and the largest ones or most elaborate can go for 500!

There may be some small items worth that much, even if they are small. Some jewelry comes to mind, especially if they use precious gems and high-quality materials for the band and settings. But a mug from a mould?!?! No way.

It’s still a smartphone, can be used the same way and still, people shell out the money for the popular brand and don’t freak out about it. It’s a matter of perceived value and we pay more for something that we perceive as valuable, not stuff, that is necessary really of high value…

Not the cheapest but I usually buy a Samsung thats 2 to 4 years old at that point. TVs? While not super small player I buy Vizio and not Sony or Samsung. Bottom line all of them do the job about 70 to 90% as good as their competitors at 40 to 50% less cost.
Hi, slipcaster here! Just want to clear up some misconceptions about slipcasting Im seeing: firstly *WE MOSTLY MAKE OUR OWN MOLDS FROM SCRATCH* that often involves about a day working out the master shape and then several more days pouring plaster out to make the different parts of the mold. Yes, people do buy premade molds and I don't know if Shelby did this or not HOWEVER making a mold that's only a small part of the work involved in slip casting because secondly: *WE OFTEN MAKE THE CASTING SLIP OURSELVES FROM SCRATCH* - at least more experienced slip casters do both for cost and for getting the correct consistency - *it is not just adding clay to water*, the recipe for casting slip is a delicate ratio of water, clay, soda ash and sodium silicate. It takes half a fay to mix up with a blunger - something most don't have, i. Which case it's a day long process of mixing to aim to get he perfect gravity and if you add too much water - that's a day of waiting for it to correct itself. You can biy premade slip but it isn't as cost effect and often I find the consistency isn't great unless I do it myself. Third *THE WORK ISN'T DONE THE MINUTE YOU WACK IT OUT THE MOLD* because after about a half or more of pouring, sitting and drying to leather hard, you have visible seams, you need to attach handles in another mold and you have to get that smooth. If your a perfectionist it can take up to an hour on one cup. I am not a perfectionists, that's why I can't charge 125 dollarydoos (£60 ish) for my work, that bisque fire plain mug which on its own would equal half that - which leads me to: Four *HANDPAINTED GLAZE IMAGERY TAKES A LOT LONGER TO DO THAN JUST DIP GLAZING* again that takes about an or more for some simple strawberries - if your giving yourself a living wage per hour - that's where a lot of your price comes from. On top of all that, you have the overhead costs of the two kiln firings which take 1-2 days to do each. So summing up, even if this was a pre-bought shaped mold, there's a lot more work that goes into slipcasting - a lot more than manufactured machine made slipcast ceramic which will bring the cost far higher - that doesn't make manufactured slipcast ceramic worse - just look at, say, Spode pottery - but when its by a single individual doing each part, decorating each piece individually, that's why it costs so much. * And you don't have to buy it*, that's the wonderful thing - yes my pieces are more expensive than your favourite unicorn cup you got ten years ago from Wilko - but that's alright! When Im doing craft fairs, I know that it's something that not everyone can afford or willing to buy - I tend to go out of my way to let people know they can look and it's fine if they don't buy, but please, after spending a week deliberately churning out, delicately refining and hand decorating twenty bowls to have 6 of them explode in the kiln a day before a craft fair - each one at least 2 - 3 hours of combined work, don't tell me it's not handmade because its just a mold.
I'll also just add to experience - once you get good at throwing * it can be much faster than slipcasting * which is why you can often find thrown pieces priced for cheaper. However if you want to make multiples of an item which are exactly the same shape - like a set, and also much more lightweight and use less clay - slipcasting it the better option. For something more heavy and... organic is the word(?), then throwing would be better once you get good at it.
Unreasonable. You're mostly talking about the hours of waiting. How does that justify it's price? That you're supposed to do all the steps by hand is a given. But that's not what makes a handmade piece valuable.

I always do my best to support small businesses, and I agree that artists deserve to be fully compensated for their time and labor, plus these small businesses are not Walmart or luxury brands that are mass produced and made with slave labor; they have less resources, less employees, and less reach so it's not okay to devalue someone's hard work just because Walmart or Target has a cheaper version. However, there are "small business" owners who are definitely taking advantage of the goodwill that people give to small businesses just to be greedy. Buying something in mass bulk from Aliexpress and marking up the price is not the same thing as making something by hand, and people are not obligated to buy your stuff just because you're a small business and your stuff is handmade.
I used to make custom heirloom crochet baby blankets as a side hustle. I’ve been crocheting for 20+ years, not to toot my own horn, but I didn’t make little chunky acrylic Walmart yarn ones, I used my own handspun, hand dyed, locally sourced alpaca wool yarn and spend weeks perfecting one-of-a-kind blanket patterns and appliqués with fleece backing. These were meant to be handed down from generation as an heirloom, not thrown in a crib and machine washed. I priced realistically but still with my labor in mind, and discussed prices up front. Most people looking for what I was providing understood what they were paying for (usually $350-$950 depending on size and intricacy) but I had so many people balk at the prices. “I can go to Target and get a blanket for $15”. Okay, go then. I don’t sell them anymore, I got tired of justifying the prices. That said, $125 for a tiny cup is outrageous 😂 but I get it if it’s hand crafted. 🤷♀️ hand-crafted items have a niche market.
If something is not priced clearly I won't even think about buying it I'll just keep walking. It's such a cheap way to try and trick people into overspending. If the seller thinks they have a fair price they will not hide it.
The only issue is some sucky sellers are starting to act like even this is rude. A lot of scammers out there at this point and the best sign they are one is how defensive they get over basic questions

I took a few business classes in college and they taught me the best way to charge for a product. Take how much you bought the materials for then divide that by how much product that gave you (yield percent) that equals how much it cost you to make it. Now divide that by .3 (30% mark up is what we call a fair pricing point) and thats how you get your sales price
okay but that doesn't include labour. With crafts supplies are cheap but you spend a lot of time making something. Most people factor in minimum wage into pricing craft goods. You might also need to add on money for a website or 'free shipping' as well
@@MadameCorgi the 30% or divided by .3 is the profit that covers labor. Say it costs the artist $30 to make something if you divide that by.3 you get $100 that you sell that item for and you get a $70 profit
@@haleythornton97 I could buy bulk yarn for, say, $5 a skein. Let's say i make something with two skeins, so $10, but it took 15 hours to do. So 10 (materials) × 1 (product) / .3 (constant) That means i'd get $33 for 15 hours' worth of labor. That's $2.2/hr Now, if i used a knitting machine instead of crocheting (as crocheting cannot be done by machine, but knitting can), maybe i can get the time of labor down to 2 hours. That would be about equivalent to $16.5/hr. That there is the problem with not caring about labor specifically. That's why you can't use that for handmade goods but can for bulk goods. My sib makes and sells nettle teas. Pretty mich everything is profit because they pays for next to nothing to produce it so they just randomly chose a dollar amount and adjusted it for demand.

As a small business owner, pricing is not as simple as many think. For a food business, you have to analyze the average prices of all your ingredients, determine how much of a profit you’ll make based on different prices, and set a price that is reasonable enough that people will still want to buy it. For two years, I was selling my product for four dollars of profit per unit while the unit price was $30.
I've gone to so many events now, where people are selling handmade items. If I think it's overpriced, I don't care. Simple. You don't let anyone pressure you into making a purchase you don't want to make.
The ‘il circle back’ trick is the go to. Lol! ‘I was at a market and some guy was selling photo prints of trees unframed for £700 I almost choked on my own breath when I know it at a stretch cost him £5 to print the photo. Lol I’m not a photographer but I’m an artist who used photography to create my art, I sell paintings and I wouldn’t even charge that for a hand drawn/painted a3 image of some trees.. I also do custom artwork of peoples pets for £70-100 depending on size and I include a frame with every piece.. my drawings aren’t my main income, I hold down my entire tattooing buisness on top of my art and I’m forever thinking I charge too much until I visit these markets and I get a reality check that I’m actually pretty fair in my pricing.. so I did the whole ‘it’s a little pricey for me atm I’ve still got so much else I’ve came here to buy first but il maybe circle back’
This is why I find it hard to sell my original pieces, I feel like I'm overpricing asking £150 for an original pencil piece which took 60+ hours to complete. But so much time and effort went into it that I feel like if I charge lower I'm nowhere near recomping my time. I always create prints of my original for like £2, so the option is there if someone doesn't want to commit to the original.
The big difference is an artist that spends 60hrs to make one piece is justified. Shelby is a MANUFACTURER. She belts out multiple pieces an hour and does them in multiple lots. Her ceramics are not unique, the moulds are old, used. They aren't artisan, they are from a defunct commercial business. All she does is glaze them with a design she comes up with. Her materials are cheap, the only thing that is expensive would be the firing of the ceramics, but that probably works out to about $2 a piece.
@graphite2786 Hi, slip caster here, we are really are not belting out hundreds an hour. It's more like... One an hour, per mold, if you've got yourself to a perfect efficiency. Takes about 30-40min for piece to be done and take out the mold, THEN you need to work on the seems and attach handles and other parts (you usually cast the handles separately for hygene/cleaning reasons on the final piece), THEN there's firing costs THEN in Shelby's case its individually hand painting each work with a strawberry design. That can take an hour per piece or more. So all in all it can take a about 2-3 hours per piece not including firings. I remember the last place I tutored someone expressed concern when I proposed a slip casting course that the students would make too much work for us to handled. I just laughed. They were very quickly reassured when the course proceeded.
Im in the same boat. I do glow in the dark paintings. Mix all my paints by hand with glows not regularly seen like brown, black, grey, tan etc. Frame them & line the frames with blacklights. I used to do custom funko pops. On a side note if you have an ig id love to check out your page
When you're trying to sell art or a handmade object, the cost is a balance of materials + labor + other essentials (e.g. shipping costs). If you can't sell something for your asking price, you may have to figure out to make it more cheaply or more quickly or choose to make something else that will sell. It's different if someone commissions a piece.
I agree that they're people that'll do dropshipping and call it "handmade." And increase a crazy amount for it. But for actual handmade artist. Are we not discussing the material cost, labor cost, shipping, etc. Also, you have to make a profit, and it is not scalable if you do it all yourself. For example, it cost you to make the product, which is about $40 (material, labor, designers, shipping, etc). You need to increase the markup by at least 300%. That'll lead to a retail cost of $120. That also does not include marketing cost. Also, most handmade products are not scalable. You will burnout if you do it all yourself. Are we okay to devalue the product of someone who's making it handmade? Also, it is interesting how big corporation is literally destroying small businesses because they can reduce cost if they want to.
It drives me crazy that people can’t understand that handmaking and item costs money and also are we not an inflation right now? People can not expect someone handmaking something to be able to sell it at cost or even loose money by selling a handmade bag for $2 like a mass produced grocery bag probably made in appealing working conditions by laborers who don’t get paid a living wage.

As someone who wants to open a small business, I understand how much time it takes to make something along with the cost of materials. But at the same time, I know that the prices need to be reasonable. We’re in the midst of a recession after all and not a lot of people can afford or are willing to spend over $100 on something handmade. There’s a difference between reasonably priced and being greedy.

There economy is in a massive free fall with unemployment reaching 50% already as factories and business move out. About 75% of the world manufacturing is moving out of China and going to places like Mexico,India, Vietnam, Bangladesh, South Korea and even some of the most advance manufacturing of chips has actually moved to the US instead of just being mostly in Asia. When these companies finish moving the inflation should settle. The other issue was the last year Trump was in office, he put in a 25% import on tax on most of the Chinese goods. For the first year, USA companies could keep product prices low while they went though there stock. But once that stock was done, the items that came from China had a 25% tax put in causing almost everything to go up. While we all get to pay more for crap from China and the rich and big business got a big tax cut. When Reagan was in, the tax rate for the wealthy was about 70% and the top 1% owned about 50% of the country assest. Well with all the tax cut and a good accountant/tax person the wealthy may be paying a lower percent then you do. In just the past 40 years the top 1% went from owning 50% of the country assest to 90% of the countries assest and buying up more land ect then ever. Meanwhile while the rich buy things like land which always has some value, while regular American are wasting there money buy paying $115.00 more for a stupid reusable grogery bag. Well no wonder American cannot pay rent when they have spending habit like this. . In fact the average American women will be spending $275k over there lifetime on make-up. Yep that is not a mis-print. Well I would rather have a nice retirement then wear make-up all the day to impress people I really do not care weather they think I am beautiful or not. But unemploment is at one of the lowest level ever and the stock market is at record highs. The rest of the world is in recession but we are not since we have had good GPD growth rates. But before you scream at Biden he has open land for oil companies to drill. They just do not see it as cost effective to do it. I'm an illustrator and I'm currently working with my best friend to start joining him at local concerts and artist alleys selling pins, prints, stickers, and magnets of my own illustrations. I've seen him sell $30 original hand-drawn and framed paintings and watched as customers stopped to check their bank account balance before buying it! Lots of people want to help support small businesses, but will gravitate towards the smallest, cheapest looking items on the table because that's all they can afford. Its our job as small business owners to recognize the needs and demands of our customers and adapt. Not saying that means sellers need to accept less than they're worth, but if their clientele cant afford $100 mugs, they need to start making cheaper ones!

7:22 I wanted to clear something out, the sizes of a business is defined by the amount of workers the employer has not the amount of followers they have on social media. If a business only has the creator and maybe two or three employees then yes, that is a small business regardless of the amount of followers that they may have on social media. By definition a small business is considered small if it has fewer than 100 employees while a medium size business is considered to be one that has between 100 to 1,500 employees, anything beyond that will be considered a big sized business. And don’t get me wrong, I still think the product was ridiculously over priced.
There is no one universally accepted definition of the number of employees that defines a small business. Different countries and industries have different definitions.

For an Australian company to be considered a small business you need to have 50 or less employees, so the pottery maker seems to have a small business, considering that all her videos it’s just her doing the work and from the pictures I’ve seen of her selling her products she might have two or three people helping her there. I’m not sure about the other girl but I’m sure she also falls under a small business. If the paints were really expensive (like had gold dust in them) and the painting was extremely detailed and layered with a real artistic flair, maybe $65 USD would be okay for the mug. But that wasn't that impressive of a design. Cute? Yes. Cute isn't usually priced high.

I run a small Etsy storefront of vintage and antique Italian market finds, and I charge what they are “worth” on market, but shipping is something people will message me about since I had to make blanket shipping prices for different countries. I gladly give custom quotes if asked (which I have posted in every description of every item. Ask and I’ll get back to you) since shipping varies wildly… and with fuel prices/iraq war that’s starting it’s getting wilder 😅 Someone bought a copper relief that weighs nothing, but still cost *42€* in shipping to NC. It cost more than the item! If people don’t want to buy my stuff, I’m not offended, and I don’t expect people to fawn over me like a newly born baby simply because I run a (very) small business. Farmers market became unaccessible when influencers began making videos about the products and stuff, like they're some kind of luxury items now because of the "organic", "handmade" and other stupid trends. So now they think they can charge whatever they want since they're "luxury items". And i understand people who sell handmade stuff dont wanna sell it for a buck because it took time and effort to make those things so they think they should be expensive but aint nobody gonna buy your products if theyre expensive as you think they should be so they really have no value. People give value to the products, if nobody buys it because its stupid expensive then does it really have any value...?
That's kind of why I don't understand the anger in this situation. No one is forcing people to buy random handmade mugs. If no one buys them-they either readjust the price or close shop. Getting mad and making a whole thing out of someone's prices for non essential items is strange to me.

This story has two sides. First, if something feels too expensive for you, just say it, don’t feel embarrassed and walk away. The mug is expensive; but we usually don’t gasp in awe when something made in China and sold by a “luxury brand” is astronomically overpriced, we just go with it and do not/purchase it according to our means and preferences. I do t know how this maker prices her mugs, but you have to mirror ALL the costs of your business in each and every product, otherwise it’s not a business, but an expensive hobby. So it’s time, materials, tools, overhead like electricity, rent, transport (to the market), employees etc. I don’t know if that all amounts to $125, but if yes, she can’t lower the price, if she needs to keep the business. I probably wouldn’t buy the mug, I sometimes get OOAK handmade mugs for 40-60€, which is still justifiable for me for the beautifully glazed handmade products, but if the price was too high for me, I just wouldn’t buy it. Also, the number of followers on SM does not say anything about a business being small or not. A small business has fewer employees, lower revenue, is privately owned by an individual or small group of owners. It’s not a housewife selling a mug for barely the price of the materials used, to fund her hobby. And I am still not saying, that $125 is justified, because I don’t know how she comes up with the prices of her products, but if that’s what she needs to earn to keep her business, then she needs to find the customers who buy her products for that price. I've been slipcasting for most of my life, the best part is vintage molds, from the mushroom dishes to the fire place cat, to the Christmas tree that you drill a million holes in for lights, you get to hold a piece of nostalgia while making new memories, and every piece is a collaboration, also the going price for mugs is twenty dollars, but the glaze work she did might bump a normal sized mug up to fourty

From another video it seems she sold out pretty quickly too - all fans who followed her online. A part of me is like "well, they're adults and it's their money" but another part of me thinks it's pretty crappy to develop a fan base just to essentially take advantage of them.

It depends on how much work goes into it, how she values her time, and how much it is able to sell at. You don‘t get to determine her pricing. It‘s not how this works. If her mug takes a lot of time and effort to make, i‘m sure it could be 50 to 100 bucks. Gucci sells handbags for millions. That‘s overpriced as well yet people don‘t get nearly as mad at them despite it being known that they use slave labour and underpay workers for basically making the product. You people can‘t compare mega corporation pricing to independant business. Boy😂 I buy handmade pottery in the UK and no simple mug I've seen ever cost even 40 £. Hand painted depending on how complex the design and expensive the paints I can see definitely
I did a market just before Christmas. I spent hours making crochet plushies and my prices were cheap compared to what I’ve seen other people sell them for on the crochet groups I’m in. My cheaper item, being a variety of keychains, was $7 and that is enough to cover materials. I didn’t cover my own labour with that. And nearing the end of the market day, I knocked it down to $5. The only thing that hindered me that day was being cash only. My most expensive item was $27 purely for the fact that it used a lot more yarn than the rest. I sell any of my first attempts at new patterns that I’m not 100% with at a discount. But yeah $125 (AUD) for a cup that was made from a mould. Eeeessssh (Edit. Keep in mind. My pricing is in NZD so 7 NZD is at current point of conversion 4.25 USD and 27 NZD is 16.38 USD. Just to add some context. But I do small to mid sized projects at the moment haven’t done any massive ones that would justify a higher price)
Yeah I'm looking into building my own crochet business and going to local craft fairs and markets. Unfortunately I live in Switzerland so the price of material is so dang expensive here but I guess people are willing to pay a little more here too because it's just the norm. I'm definitely looking into ways to get good deals because I don't want to overcharge and I was thinking of doing the same thing. Doing this actually devaules crochet work. You should charge at least materials + an hourly minimum wage rate for your area + at *least* 15% for business costs (bags, shipping, website - this is all stuff that you need to pay for if you want to make that a business). Underpricing crochet is a huge problem because it makes people expect to get cheap crochet crafts, which means there's a large incentive for sweatshop crochet work. Since crochet cannot be done by a machine, that means that every $20 crochet top you see in a chain store, or ever $4 shein crochet bandana was created by someone who was paid pennies an hour. Most crocheters find that they can't make money on crochet because people have been led to expect to pay $20 for a hat or *maybe* $50 for a nice shawl, when those prices need to be at least two to three times higher to make a profit. If you can't find people willing to buy your crochet at prices that compensate you for your labor, you may need to reexamine that as a business option, because what happens when you've built up a customer base of people who expect not to cover your labor? What happens when someone sets up a booth next to you and they *have* built a fair market wage into their pricing? You're undercutting them as a detriment to yourself. You are not overcharging your customers by ensuring that you are paid a fair wage. Would you allow an employer to pay you that little money for the amount of work that you put in? If not, don't let yourself do it either.
I respect you trying to keep your prices affordable for clients but bestie you gotta charge a bit more than that. Like...double. $4 USD for a hand crocheted keychain? I think I've paid more for factory made, mass-produced plush keychains. Those should be around 10 USD, 15 NZD. Again, I respect the hell outta you for trying your best to keep prices fair and accessible to your customers, but they are WAY too low. Pay yourself a little extra to cover labor, get yourself an electronic fund transferring app like Google Wallet, and save up some of your profits for a wireless payment terminal so that you can take cards.
We have a pottery shop in our town and the cups cost max. 45 €. Those people are 70 years old and still work their asses of. They hand make every single piece. 130$ for a pice that’s molded is just insane.

(And there are plenty of luxury ceramics that are mass made factory stuff, pretending to be -quirky-, sooooo…) Some people have money. One thing about small business prices that I don’t understand sometimes as a small business owner myself is how smaller items that definitely took less time can cost so much because I have specific items that I make to be cheap like, for example, I have these medicine pouches that take me like an hour to make I can make four of them in a day and I charge 10 bucks for them because fuck the money I would hate it if somebody really wanted some of my art but couldn’t get it because they can’t afford it so I make small things that don’t take me much effort so that I can charge cheap on them so that everybody can access my art like it’s really weird to not have that imo
My aunt has a ceramics business and I’ve helped her in the past. She sold a whole chess set that took days to make and paint etc for under $200. $125 for a cup is pretty bonkers.

I think people forget that Demand effects pricing as well. High demand products will cost more. If its popular because they built a social media presence, then they can charge more. If people dont buy it, then prices will drop due to the lack of demand
As an artist who has sold artwork and done commissions I was always told that I underprice my art too much and need to charge more, but it makes me feel bad to charge more 😭 Anyway, my mum does pottery and I know that A LOT of work goes into it, she has her own kiln where you need to buy your own gas (expensive at the moment), not only does it take a lot of time to make something on the wheel, but it also takes a few firings, glazing, detailing, etc. It's a lot of work, yet my mum when she did sell her pottery, she didn't charge over a $100 for a mug. I think the most she charged would be about $20 for a handmade mug that went through all that process. Also, we have to be realistic too, I don't think you'd get many sales if you charge $100+ for a cheaply made mug or silly tote bag.
I get told the same thing, underpricing my art. You aren't alone! I always make sure people know exactly much it costs with tax before they pay, too. Its hard because i know lots are hurting for money, so i don't want to charge a lot, even if it took me days to make something. This mug story is crazy! My friends that make their own pottery sell mugs for much less than that as well. Best of luck with your artistic journey! I hope we both eventually sell our stuff for what we deserve.

Ok regarding the mug as someone whos done clay work. Its not at simple as people think. Yes she uses slip molds but that doesn't make her work less then someone on a wheel. She hand paints all these peices, which many have extremely tiny details. She has to fire these peices atleast twice in the kilm possibly more. Plus cost of supplies, electric bill and so on. The mold is most likely vintage like most of her molds. Ive seen soild colored wheel peices for this price. Its reasonable considering the cost of everything. The days of work that goes into a single peice cause firing takes acouple days then a few more the cool.

I got my own handcrafted mug from a Farmer's Market, it was a pottery thing. I got it for like 55$. My mug is HALF THE PRICE, and is bigger than the one shown, and it is really pretty. The person made gnomes, and those were like 50$ and they're really pretty.
tbh i feel bad for my prices sometimes because of hate like this. One of my last commissions took me almost 7 hours and i charged it 50$CAN it's 7$ per hour and some ppl told me it was not worth it. Look I get where their prices are coming from…my daughter crochets and just made a blanket that had $200 worth of wool in it. When you are buying materials small scale and retail it’s going to cost a lot. However it’s just not a good business plan to sell these items unless you’re a famous artist ….unless you are just doing it for fun and happy with the odd sale or two…because if you want mass sales you need to compete with Walmart prices as most people aren’t rich . No way would I pay $65 for that as I drop cups all the time…so I buy cheap ones so I don’t cry about it 😂
Small businesses who sell handmade goods rely on the fact each of their items are unique, their competition isn't walmart. Different customers. You work out your costs. If you daughter it using 200$ wool in a blanket she may need to look into cheaper wool. Yes wool is expensive but not by that much. The main reason why items that are made from wool are so expensive is due to the time it takes to make.
@@skye1235The $200 really depends on the project. And it sounds about right for wool materials. I crocheted a few years ago a huge 6x6 granny square blanket. Has a lot of holes in it from the style of pattern. $96 with cheap acrylic worsted weight yarn that I doubled up for a heavier product.
So I've just started my own small business...you 100% have every right to question someone's practices. Being a small business owner doesn't give you an out to overcharge people. If someone is willing to pay for something they will but it doesn't mean everyone will. When starting out you're going to be in the red for a bit because you need to get the supplies and all the extra things. I don't know. After the picture was shown of the strawberry collection stuff just jumbled together on the shelf BEHIND the counter (where you couldn't see the extra handle) and the fact that she never actually picked it up- the worker at the stall did and started wrapping it- it's pretty easy to understand how she could miss the second handle. It's not hard- it just had to be on the side facing away the whole time. Which is definitely not out of the question here once the whole situation was explained.

I did that at a Francesca’s clothing store recently because their sale signs were deceptive and a flannel top I wanted was around $60! The sale sign said something like 30% off shirts and sweaters and the flannel was right below that sign, but apparently the flannel wasn’t part of the sale so I said nevermind.

I have no problem walking away when I think something is too expensive. I guess when you are never told no you never tell other the word either and you become just a sheep with your money. Then you wonder why people cannot pay for the basic. For example women have gone insane with all these beauty products. Well the Average American women will spend on average $275k on make up and beauty products. Sorry I would rather have my retirement. Meanwhile we have 8 year old girls asking for facial creams and masks instead of dolls and games.
I worked retail for YEARS. I’ve also owned small businesses, and so has my dad and sisters. Common sense would say that YOU DONT WRAP AN ITEM UNTIL THE PERSON PAYS FOR IT. you also NEVER try to pressure someone into buying your items. The backlash is just not worth it. I worked in a department store that sold custom window coverings. My sales associate was an older woman going through a divorce (she needed money) - we worked on commission, and she would pressure every single customer into buying items that they didn’t want, and too many of them. She would follow them around the store and bug them until they bought something just to get her out of their face. I lost track of the number of times that they returned the items the NEXT DAY- on my shift when they knew she wasn’t going to be there. All the packages were unopened. They never wanted the items to begin with. What made it worse was that the store made her a manager of the department because of the high sales that she had. (Never mind the returns). So she wasn’t actually making the store any money. It still boggles the mind all these years later. I understand putting in loads of time and effort to a product that you hand craft. But bullying buyers into purchasing your products is not the way to go.
As a small business owner myself, I am almost ALWAYS questioning other people's prices (the ones who make the same kind of product as I do). And yes, some folks know nothing and expect us to have factory prices for our handmade goods. But there are also a lot of people who make crap and still charge too much money compared to the amount of work they have put in.
Also, I feel like the woman who made the cactus cup is not charging enough. That's another problem, because she gets underpaid and customers will also expect other shop owners to have the same prices

Shelby is rude and entitled and for molded pottery that is overpriced but do not show me an artist who undervalued their own art as a rebuttal for pricing! 15 dollars for a hand sculpted and hand painted mug is criminal and if i am looking for handcrafted items I expect to pay a handcrafted price. Undervalued products really ruin the market for handcrafted goods. I've been looking into selling knitted/crocheted items and after crunching the math and comparing the market online... It's heartbreaking. I can't feasibly do it.
So many folks just don't charge accordingly for the number of hours spent making the item. And it creates a false idea with buyers that something like a baby blanket is quick, easy and cheap.

In this cup situation, if you assume that an artist spends 4 hours on a mug (wich is not much if it's actually handmade) and take the average USA hourly pay, plus the raw material price, plus the upkeep of your craftin space, I'd say 120$ is actually quite reasonable.
No exactly because $120 is a lot but it should be more than a normal one. Yes they’re molded but a lot of artists do that because nobody wants to waste time making every mug, putting it in the kiln for pretty much a whole day, glazing it for a few hours, putting it in the kiln again, and then selling it. I would know because i make ceramics- so it’s not fair for people to downplay her work for using molds, but it isn’t fair for her to charge so much even if it wasn’t made from a mold. Because one, the time could be cut in half by using a mold so it’s your own fault it took that long, two, the cup is minuscule there’s no way it’s functional for actual drinks, and three it’s not accessible at all. Not the price and not the material. So she shouldn’t pretend that’s why she made it because it isn’t. I would say $50-$80 is good, because there is genuine effort there. But it’s not functional as she says it is
I agree with almost everything except your very last point. Farmers markets (at least in America) aren't to get things cheaper. It's to purchase items directly from the source as opposed to third party stores. Usually the cost of produce is cheaper, but that's about it.

I work for a non-profit that works with a lot of handmade pottery artists. Not a single mug has ever come anywhere close to that price. Actually hand turned, glazed, designs added to it, etc. The most expensive I think I have ever seen a mug was $60 for something large and very well made with lots of hand painted/drawn details.

Also, Finders Keepers isn't a farmers market, it's a craft fair or makers market. In my experience that's very different demographic in terms of who goes and what kinds of stalls are there. In my experience, the quality and range of handmade items (and thus prices) are much higher generally at a makers market than at a farmer's market.
I think Shelby was in the wrong, but not because of the prices. She behaved poorly and I don't understand with people trying to change the subject as if if she priced the mug at half the price this pity desperate act of hers would be any more acceptable. Also, a small business is a business with less than 100 employees not how many followers you have. Followers mean nothing to the size of your business. Just a misconception I see people throw around all the time.

For people with anxiety it’s extremely hard to do that. You feel ashamed, embarrassed and think it would just be better to pretend everything is fine and pay for it. Happened to me many times.
@@hello_again9149 no it's not hard at all. You just need to weigh this one short "no, thank you" against the amount of anxiety packed, panic attack inducing hours of work, you have to suffer through, to earn that money back.
I think it's because of mentality that when you come into the shop, you need to buy at least something or you're wasting a seller's time. It's very common in Eastern Europe, where the customer service is very low and workers can literally yell at you (especially elders, they're usually rude towards everyone younger than them) and tell you to go away if you're just strolling around and not buying anything. I experienced it myself and believe me, it makes you very anxious next time you come to the shop or to the market.

If a business has fewer than 500 employees it is, by definition, a small business.

I had once told a woman no while at con bc I couldn’t afford her boxes she made. She made cute wooden boxes and I felt bad about it. But the money I saved I wanted to use on stuff I really wanted and I didn’t like the box enough for that. It would have cost me more than half of what I had saved and I didn’t have a job at the time to make it back. when I told her I couldn’t afford it, she tried to shame me by saying ‘but you bought a ticket to be here’. Basically saying if I couldn’t afford it why did I come. My anxiety shot through the roof with that. I just was like ‘yea sorry’ and walked away. I still get filled with anxiety thinking about it.

I've been to comic conventions, anime, gaming, horror movie conventions, etc. I didn't go to it but I've even heard of wedding conventions I think they had vendors and wedding dresses and stuff I guess lol But yes as Kai said, people set up booths and can sell their own items at literally any of the conventions I've listed.

Now- I threw this, paid for space in a kiln (before I got my own), bought glazes (expensive they are unfairly expensive), paid for space in a kiln again, then sold it.
My normal prices are 20-50 dollars depending on size!
It’s a hobby for me! And I’m so happy when I can sell them but if something doesn’t sell- I lower the price for the next day.
Most of the pottery at this art fair is around the same price- and the largest ones or most elaborate can go for 500!

It’s still a smartphone, can be used the same way and still, people shell out the money for the popular brand and don’t freak out about it.
It’s a matter of perceived value and we pay more for something that we perceive as valuable, not stuff, that is necessary really of high value…
@@AA-ed6ek This is why I buy the underdog brand of almost everything I own. PC Pars? No Intel or Nvidia here all AMD. Phone? Not the cheapest but I usually buy a Samsung thats 2 to 4 years old at that point. TVs? While not super small player I buy Vizio and not Sony or Samsung.
Bottom line all of them do the job about 70 to 90% as good as their competitors at 40 to 50% less cost.

Hi, slipcaster here! Just want to clear up some misconceptions about slipcasting Im seeing: firstly *WE MOSTLY MAKE OUR OWN MOLDS FROM SCRATCH* that often involves about a day working out the master shape and then several more days pouring plaster out to make the different parts of the mold. Yes, people do buy premade molds and I don't know if Shelby did this or not HOWEVER making a mold that's only a small part of the work involved in slip casting because secondly:
*WE OFTEN MAKE THE CASTING SLIP OURSELVES FROM SCRATCH* - at least more experienced slip casters do both for cost and for getting the correct consistency - *it is not just adding clay to water*, the recipe for casting slip is a delicate ratio of water, clay, soda ash and sodium silicate. It takes half a fay to mix up with a blunger - something most don't have, i. Which case it's a day long process of mixing to aim to get he perfect gravity and if you add too much water - that's a day of waiting for it to correct itself. You can biy premade slip but it isn't as cost effect and often I find the consistency isn't great unless I do it myself.
Third *THE WORK ISN'T DONE THE MINUTE YOU WACK IT OUT THE MOLD* because after about a half or more of pouring, sitting and drying to leather hard, you have visible seams, you need to attach handles in another mold and you have to get that smooth. If your a perfectionist it can take up to an hour on one cup. I am not a perfectionists, that's why I can't charge 125 dollarydoos (£60 ish) for my work, that bisque fire plain mug which on its own would equal half that - which leads me to:
Four *HANDPAINTED GLAZE IMAGERY TAKES A LOT LONGER TO DO THAN JUST DIP GLAZING* again that takes about an or more for some simple strawberries - if your giving yourself a living wage per hour - that's where a lot of your price comes from.
On top of all that, you have the overhead costs of the two kiln firings which take 1-2 days to do each.
So summing up, even if this was a pre-bought shaped mold, there's a lot more work that goes into slipcasting - a lot more than manufactured machine made slipcast ceramic which will bring the cost far higher - that doesn't make manufactured slipcast ceramic worse - just look at, say, Spode pottery - but when its by a single individual doing each part, decorating each piece individually, that's why it costs so much. * And you don't have to buy it*, that's the wonderful thing - yes my pieces are more expensive than your favourite unicorn cup you got ten years ago from Wilko - but that's alright! When Im doing craft fairs, I know that it's something that not everyone can afford or willing to buy - I tend to go out of my way to let people know they can look and it's fine if they don't buy, but please, after spending a week deliberately churning out, delicately refining and hand decorating twenty bowls to have 6 of them explode in the kiln a day before a craft fair - each one at least 2 - 3 hours of combined work, don't tell me it's not handmade because its just a mold.
I'll also just add to experience - once you get good at throwing * it can be much faster than slipcasting * which is why you can often find thrown pieces priced for cheaper. However if you want to make multiples of an item which are exactly the same shape - like a set, and also much more lightweight and use less clay - slipcasting it the better option. For something more heavy and... organic is the word(?), then throwing would be better once you get good at it.
Unreasonable. You're mostly talking about the hours of waiting. How does that justify it's price? That you're supposed to do all the steps by hand is a given. But that's not what makes a handmade piece valuable.

I always do my best to support small businesses, and I agree that artists deserve to be fully compensated for their time and labor, plus these small businesses are not Walmart or luxury brands that are mass produced and made with slave labor; they have less resources, less employees, and less reach so it's not okay to devalue someone's hard work just because Walmart or Target has a cheaper version.
However, there are "small business" owners who are definitely taking advantage of the goodwill that people give to small businesses just to be greedy. Buying something in mass bulk from Aliexpress and marking up the price is not the same thing as making something by hand, and people are not obligated to buy your stuff just because you're a small business and your stuff is handmade.
I used to make custom heirloom crochet baby blankets as a side hustle. I’ve been crocheting for 20+ years, not to toot my own horn, but I didn’t make little chunky acrylic Walmart yarn ones, I used my own handspun, hand dyed, locally sourced alpaca wool yarn and spend weeks perfecting one-of-a-kind blanket patterns and appliqués with fleece backing. These were meant to be handed down from generation as an heirloom, not thrown in a crib and machine washed. I priced realistically but still with my labor in mind, and discussed prices up front. Most people looking for what I was providing understood what they were paying for (usually $350-$950 depending on size and intricacy) but I had so many people balk at the prices. “I can go to Target and get a blanket for $15”. Okay, go then. I don’t sell them anymore, I got tired of justifying the prices. That said, $125 for a tiny cup is outrageous 😂 but I get it if it’s hand crafted. 🤷♀️ hand-crafted items have a niche market.
But this cup was produced via mold, it’s not really handcrafted outside the painting.
This is why you ALWAYS ask the price, *before* buying something. No matter how small, because of sellers like this.

If something is not priced clearly I won't even think about buying it I'll just keep walking. It's such a cheap way to try and trick people into overspending. If the seller thinks they have a fair price they will not hide it.
The only issue is some sucky sellers are starting to act like even this is rude. A lot of scammers out there at this point and the best sign they are one is how defensive they get over basic questions

I took a few business classes in college and they taught me the best way to charge for a product. Take how much you bought the materials for then divide that by how much product that gave you (yield percent) that equals how much it cost you to make it. Now divide that by .3 (30% mark up is what we call a fair pricing point) and thats how you get your sales price
okay but that doesn't include labour. With crafts supplies are cheap but you spend a lot of time making something. Most people factor in minimum wage into pricing craft goods. You might also need to add on money for a website or 'free shipping' as well

I could buy bulk yarn for, say, $5 a skein. Let's say i make something with two skeins, so $10, but it took 15 hours to do.
So 10 (materials) × 1 (product) / .3 (constant)
That means i'd get $33 for 15 hours' worth of labor. That's $2.2/hr
Now, if i used a knitting machine instead of crocheting (as crocheting cannot be done by machine, but knitting can), maybe i can get the time of labor down to 2 hours. That would be about equivalent to $16.5/hr.
That there is the problem with not caring about labor specifically. That's why you can't use that for handmade goods but can for bulk goods.
My sib makes and sells nettle teas. Pretty mich everything is profit because they pays for next to nothing to produce it so they just randomly chose a dollar amount and adjusted it for demand.

As a small business owner, pricing is not as simple as many think. For a food business, you have to analyze the average prices of all your ingredients, determine how much of a profit you’ll make based on different prices, and set a price that is reasonable enough that people will still want to buy it. For two years, I was selling my product for four dollars of profit per unit while the unit price was $30.

I've gone to so many events now, where people are selling handmade items. If I think it's overpriced, I don't care. I will put your item down and say "No thank you"

The ‘il circle back’ trick is the go to. Lol! ‘I was at a market and some guy was selling photo prints of trees unframed for £700 I almost choked on my own breath when I know it at a stretch cost him £5 to print the photo. Lol I’m not a photographer but I’m an artist who used photography to create my art, I sell paintings and I wouldn’t even charge that for a hand drawn/painted a3 image of some trees.. I also do custom artwork of peoples pets for £70-100 depending on size and I include a frame with every piece.. my drawings aren’t my main income, I hold down my entire tattooing buisness on top of my art and I’m forever thinking I charge too much until I visit these markets and I get a reality check that I’m actually pretty fair in my pricing.. so I did the whole ‘it’s a little pricey for me atm I’ve still got so much else I’ve came here to buy first but il maybe circle back’

This is why I find it hard to sell my original pieces, I feel like I'm overpricing asking £150 for an original pencil piece which took 60+ hours to complete. But so much time and effort went into it that I feel like if I charge lower I'm nowhere near recomping my time. I always create prints of my original for like £2, so the option is there if someone doesn't want to commit to the original.
The big difference is an artist that spends 60hrs to make one piece is justified. Shelby is a MANUFACTURER. She belts out multiple pieces an hour and does them in multiple lots. Her ceramics are not unique, the moulds are old, used. They aren't artisan, they are from a defunct commercial business. All she does is glaze them with a design she comes up with. Her materials are cheap, the only thing that is expensive would be the firing of the ceramics, but that probably works out to about $2 a piece.
@graphite2786 Hi, slip caster here, we are really are not belting out hundreds an hour. It's more like... One an hour, per mold, if you've got yourself to a perfect efficiency. Takes about 30-40min for piece to be done and take out the mold, THEN you need to work on the seems and attach handles and other parts (you usually cast the handles separately for hygene/cleaning reasons on the final piece), THEN there's firing costs THEN in Shelby's case its individually hand painting each work with a strawberry design. That can take an hour per piece or more. So all in all it can take a about 2-3 hours per piece not including firings.
I remember the last place I tutored someone expressed concern when I proposed a slip casting course that the students would make too much work for us to handled. I just laughed. They were very quickly reassured when the course proceeded.

Im in the same boat. I do glow in the dark paintings. Mix all my paints by hand with glows not regularly seen like brown, black, grey, tan etc. Frame them & line the frames with blacklights. I used to do custom funko pops.

When you're trying to sell art or a handmade object, the cost is a balance of materials + labor + other essentials (e.g. shipping costs). If you can't sell something for your asking price, you may have to figure out to make it more cheaply or more quickly or choose to make something else that will sell. It's different if someone commissions a piece.
I agree that they're people that'll do dropshipping and call it "handmade." And increase a crazy amount for it.
But for actual handmade artist.
Are we not discussing the material cost, labor cost, shipping, etc. Also, you have to make a profit, and it is not scalable if you do it all yourself.
For example, it cost you to make the product, which is about $40 (material, labor, designers, shipping, etc). You need to increase the markup by at least 300%. That'll lead to a retail cost of $120. That also does not include marketing cost.
Also, most handmade products are not scalable. You will burnout if you do it all yourself. Are we okay to devalue the product of someone who's making it handmade?
Also, it is interesting how big corporation is literally destroying small businesses because they can reduce cost if they want to.

As someone who wants to open a small business, I understand how much time it takes to make something along with the cost of materials. But at the same time, I know that the prices need to be reasonable. We’re in the midst of a recession after all and not a lot of people can afford or are willing to spend over $100 on something handmade. There’s a difference between reasonably priced and being greedy.
Recession. No sorry about that, even Fox news is having to swollow and admit the economy is starting to boom. What has effected the world economy so much is China. There economy is in a massive free fall with unemployment reaching 50% already as factories and business move out. About 75% of the world manufacturing is moving out of China and going to places like Mexico,India, Vietnam, Bangladesh, South Korea and even some of the most advance manufacturing of chips has actually moved to the US instead of just being mostly in Asia. When these companies finish moving the inflation should settle. The other issue was the last year Trump was in office, he put in a 25% import on tax on most of the Chinese goods. For the first year, USA companies could keep product prices low while they went though there stock. But once that stock was done, the items that came from China had a 25% tax put in causing almost everything to go up. While we all get to pay more for crap from China and the rich and big business got a big tax cut. When Reagan was in, the tax rate for the wealthy was about 70% and the top 1% owned about 50% of the country assest. Well with all the tax cut and a good accountant/tax person the wealthy may be paying a lower percent then you do. In just the past 40 years the top 1% went from owning 50% of the country assest to 90% of the countries assest and buying up more land ect then ever. Meanwhile while the rich buy things like land which always has some value, while regular American are wasting there money buy paying $115.00 more for a stupid reusable grogery bag. Well no wonder American cannot pay rent when they have spending habit like this. . In fact the average American women will be spending $275k over there lifetime on make-up. Yep that is not a mis-print. Well I would rather have a nice retirement then wear make-up all the day to impress people I really do not care weather they think I am beautiful or not. But unemploment is at one of the lowest level ever and the stock market is at record highs. The rest of the world is in recession but we are not since we have had good GPD growth rates. Meanwhile the rest of the world is not. For example all the countries that signed up for China road and belt project are not realizing how badly they got scammed.GB is learning maybe it was not the best thing to do, to make it 50 times harder to trade with your next door neighbor and friend the EU all so you could pretend you can turn the clock to a perceived time that people thought was better because they do not know the fact. For example people could afford a home because home on average were about 1000 sq smaller and people just did not buy so much stuff. Like today 75% of Americsn home have 3 or more TV. Another problem is if Saudi Arabia continues to sell oil in the same amount they do today, they will be out in 50 years. The USA has more untapped oil the Saudi Arabia. But before you scream at Biden he has open land for oil companies to drill. They just do not see it as cost effective to do it. Completely agree. I'm an illustrator and I'm currently working with my best friend to start joining him at local concerts and artist alleys selling pins, prints, stickers, and magnets of my own illustrations. I've seen him sell $30 original hand-drawn and framed paintings and watched as customers stopped to check their bank account balance before buying it! Lots of people want to help support small businesses, but will gravitate towards the smallest, cheapest looking items on the table because that's all they can afford.
Its our job as small business owners to recognize the needs and demands of our customers and adapt. Not saying that means sellers need to accept less than they're worth, but if their clientele cant afford $100 mugs, they need to start making cheaper ones!
But the same people would spend more money on a designers brand purse or shoes right, just because is that label. Its ironic how an small bussness is questioned on their prices but a big designer world companie is not.

7:22 I wanted to clear something out, the sizes of a business is defined by the amount of workers the employer has not the amount of followers they have on social media. If a business only has the creator and maybe two or three employees then yes, that is a small business regardless of the amount of followers that they may have on social media. By definition a small business is considered small if it has fewer than 100 employees while a medium size business is considered to be one that has between 100 to 1,500 employees, anything beyond that will be considered a big sized business. And don’t get me wrong, I still think the product was ridiculously over priced.
There is no one universally accepted definition of the number of employees that defines a small business. Different countries and industries have different definitions.

For an Australian company to be considered a small business you need to have 50 or less employees, so the pottery maker seems to have a small business, considering that all her videos it’s just her doing the work and from the pictures I’ve seen of her selling her products she might have two or three people helping her there. If the paints were really expensive (like had gold dust in them) and the painting was extremely detailed and layered with a real artistic flair, maybe $65 USD would be okay for the mug. But that wasn't that impressive of a design. Cute? Yes. Cute isn't usually priced high.

I run a small Etsy storefront of vintage and antique Italian market finds, and I charge what they are “worth” on market, but shipping is something people will message me about since I had to make blanket shipping prices for different countries. I gladly give custom quotes if asked (which I have posted in every description of every item. Ask and I’ll get back to you) since shipping varies wildly… and with fuel prices/iraq war that’s starting it’s getting wilder 😅

Farmers market became unaccessible when influencers began making videos about the products and stuff, like they're some kind of luxury items now because of the "organic", "handmade" and other stupid trends. So now they think they can charge whatever they want since they're "luxury items". And i understand people who sell handmade stuff dont wanna sell it for a buck because it took time and effort to make those things so they think they should be expensive but aint nobody gonna buy your products if theyre expensive as you think they should be so they really have no value. People give value to the products, if nobody buys it because its stupid expensive then does it really have any value...?
That's kind of why I don't understand the anger in this situation. No one is forcing people to buy random handmade mugs. If no one buys them-they either readjust the price or close shop. Getting mad and making a whole thing out of someone's prices for non essential items is strange to me.
Same with thrifting. When somthing becomes the popular, trendy, mainstream thing then it all goes to shit. Prices are jacked cause they know people will just resell it for a higher price.

I understand that those prices are way too high, but nobody was forced to buy anything. A seller is allowed to charge whatever they want and the consumer gets the choose whether it's worth it for them.

This story has two sides. First, if something feels too expensive for you, just say it, don’t feel embarrassed and walk away.
The mug is expensive; but we usually don’t gasp in awe when something made in China and sold by a “luxury brand” is astronomically overpriced, we just go with it and do not/purchase it according to our means and preferences.
I do t know how this maker prices her mugs, but you have to mirror ALL the costs of your business in each and every product, otherwise it’s not a business, but an expensive hobby. So it’s time, materials, tools, overhead like electricity, rent, transport (to the market), employees etc. I don’t know if that all amounts to $125, but if yes, she can’t lower the price, if she needs to keep the business.
I probably wouldn’t buy the mug, I sometimes get OOAK handmade mugs for 40-60€, which is still justifiable for me for the beautifully glazed handmade products, but if the price was too high for me, I just wouldn’t buy it.
Also, the number of followers on SM does not say anything about a business being small or not. A small business has fewer employees, lower revenue, is privately owned by an individual or small group of owners. It’s not a housewife selling a mug for barely the price of the materials used, to fund her hobby.
And I am still not saying, that $125 is justified, because I don’t know how she comes up with the prices of her products, but if that’s what she needs to earn to keep her business, then she needs to find the customers who buy her products for that price. I also don’t t buy Hermes bags, which cost thousands and tens of thousands $$, but there are people who do and those are the brand’s customers 🤷🏻♀️.

I've been slipcasting for most of my life, the best part is vintage molds, from the mushroom dishes to the fire place cat, to the Christmas tree that you drill a million holes in for lights, you get to hold a piece of nostalgia while making new memories, and every piece is a collaboration, also the going price for mugs is twenty dollars, but the glaze work she did might bump a normal sized mug up to fourty

From another video it seems she sold out pretty quickly too - all fans who followed her online. I'm not an expert on small businesses but 125 dollars for a mug she had a mold for and didn't craft it herself is WAY too much even if it was some complex design that she sculpted herself.

If her mug takes a lot of time and effort to make, i‘m sure it could be 50 to 100 bucks. Gucci sells handbags for millions. That‘s overpriced as well yet people don‘t get nearly as mad at them despite it being known that they use slave labour and underpay workers for basically making the product. You people can‘t compare mega corporation pricing to independant business. Boy😂 I buy handmade pottery in the UK and no simple mug I've seen ever cost even 40 £. Hand painted depending on how complex the design and expensive the paints I can see definitely

I did a market just before Christmas. I spent hours making crochet plushies and my prices were cheap compared to what I’ve seen other people sell them for on the crochet groups I’m in. My cheaper item, being a variety of keychains, was $7 and that is enough to cover materials. I didn’t cover my own labour with that. And nearing the end of the market day, I knocked it down to $5. The only thing that hindered me that day was being cash only. My most expensive item was $27 purely for the fact that it used a lot more yarn than the rest. I sell any of my first attempts at new patterns that I’m not 100% with at a discount. But yeah $125 (AUD) for a cup that was made from a mould. Eeeessssh
(Edit. Keep in mind. My pricing is in NZD so 7 NZD is at current point of conversion 4.25 USD and 27 NZD is 16.38 USD. Just to add some context. But I do small to mid sized projects at the moment haven’t done any massive ones that would justify a higher price)
Yeah I'm looking into building my own crochet business and going to local craft fairs and markets. Unfortunately I live in Switzerland so the price of material is so dang expensive here but I guess people are willing to pay a little more here too because it's just the norm. I'm definitely looking into ways to get good deals because I don't want to overcharge and I was thinking of doing the same thing. Things I've made that aren't 100% up to my standard would go for a discounted price.

Ok, just because you do non paid labor doesn’t mean it should be the standard. People should get compensated for their work. You can’t go to extremes.

Doing this actually devaules crochet work. You should charge at least materials + an hourly minimum wage rate for your area + at *least* 15% for business costs (bags, shipping, website - this is all stuff that you need to pay for if you want to make that a business). Underpricing crochet is a huge problem because it makes people expect to get cheap crochet crafts, which means there's a large incentive for sweatshop crochet work. Since crochet cannot be done by a machine, that means that every $20 crochet top you see in a chain store, or ever $4 shein crochet bandana was created by someone who was paid pennies an hour.
Most crocheters find that they can't make money on crochet because people have been led to expect to pay $20 for a hat or *maybe* $50 for a nice shawl, when those prices need to be at least two to three times higher to make a profit.
If you can't find people willing to buy your crochet at prices that compensate you for your labor, you may need to reexamine that as a business option, because what happens when you've built up a customer base of people who expect not to cover your labor? What happens when someone sets up a booth next to you and they *have* built a fair market wage into their pricing? You're undercutting them as a detriment to yourself.
You are not overcharging your customers by ensuring that you are paid a fair wage. Would you allow an employer to pay you that little money for the amount of work that you put in? If not, don't let yourself do it either.
I respect you trying to keep your prices affordable for clients but bestie you gotta charge a bit more than that. Like...double. $4 USD for a hand crocheted keychain? I think I've paid more for factory made, mass-produced plush keychains. Those should be around 10 USD, 15 NZD.
Again, I respect the hell outta you for trying your best to keep prices fair and accessible to your customers, but they are WAY too low. Pay yourself a little extra to cover labor, get yourself an electronic fund transferring app like Google Wallet, and save up some of your profits for a wireless payment terminal so that you can take cards.

They sold. They sold decently. (And there are plenty of luxury ceramics that are mass made factory stuff, pretending to be -quirky-, sooooo…)
Some people have money. They don’t all have taste, but whatever, I was happy to give them what they wanted 🤷♀️
(Also slipcasting was more effort than throwing most of the time 😂 but we commissioned our own molds of our own thrown/sculpted stuff)

One thing about small business prices that I don’t understand sometimes as a small business owner myself is how smaller items that definitely took less time can cost so much because I have specific items that I make to be cheap like, for example, I have these medicine pouches that take me like an hour to make I can make four of them in a day and I charge 10 bucks for them because fuck the money I would hate it if somebody really wanted some of my art but couldn’t get it because they can’t afford it so I make small things that don’t take me much effort so that I can charge cheap on them so that everybody can access my art like it’s really weird to not have that imo
My aunt has a ceramics business and I’ve helped her in the past. She sold a whole chess set that took days to make and paint etc for under $200. $125 for a cup is pretty bonkers.

I think people forget that Demand effects pricing as well. High demand products will cost more. If its popular because they built a social media presence, then they can charge more. If people dont buy it, then prices will drop due to the lack of demand
As an artist who has sold artwork and done commissions I was always told that I underprice my art too much and need to charge more, but it makes me feel bad to charge more 😭
Anyway, my mum does pottery and I know that A LOT of work goes into it, she has her own kiln where you need to buy your own gas (expensive at the moment), not only does it take a lot of time to make something on the wheel, but it also takes a few firings, glazing, detailing, etc. It's a lot of work, yet my mum when she did sell her pottery, she didn't charge over a $100 for a mug. I think the most she charged would be about $20 for a handmade mug that went through all that process.
Also, we have to be realistic too, I don't think you'd get many sales if you charge $100+ for a cheaply made mug or silly tote bag.

Ok regarding the mug as someone whos done clay work. Its not at simple as people think. Yes she uses slip molds but that doesn't make her work less then someone on a wheel. She hand paints all these peices, which many have extremely tiny details. She has to fire these peices atleast twice in the kilm possibly more. Plus cost of supplies, electric bill and so on. The mold is most likely vintage like most of her molds. Ive seen soild colored wheel peices for this price. Its reasonable considering the cost of everything. The days of work that goes into a single peice cause firing takes acouple days then a few more the cool.

I got my own handcrafted mug from a Farmer's Market, it was a pottery thing. I got it for like 55$. My mug is HALF THE PRICE, and is bigger than the one shown, and it is really pretty. The person made gnomes, and those were like 50$ and they're really pretty.
tbh i feel bad for my prices sometimes because of hate like this. One of my last commissions took me almost 7 hours and i charged it 50$CAN it's 7$ per hour and some ppl told me it was not worth it. My job pay me way better than that bruh (i'm paid minimum wage and the minimum wage is like 15$) and ppl still told me it was not a good price (i made a heavily detailed monster in the backgroud, i am so proud if this piece)

Look I get where their prices are coming from…my daughter crochets and just made a blanket that had $200 worth of wool in it. When you are buying materials small scale and retail it’s going to cost a lot. However it’s just not a good business plan to sell these items unless you’re a famous artist ….unless you are just doing it for fun and happy with the odd sale or two…because if you want mass sales you need to compete with Walmart prices as most people aren’t rich . No way would I pay $65 for that as I drop cups all the time…so I buy cheap ones so I don’t cry about it 😂
Small businesses who sell handmade goods rely on the fact each of their items are unique, their competition isn't walmart. Different customers. You work out your costs. If you daughter it using 200$ wool in a blanket she may need to look into cheaper wool. Yes wool is expensive but not by that much. The main reason why items that are made from wool are so expensive is due to the time it takes to make.
Textile art is so undervalued when sold and it's sad considering how much time goes into a single blanket or sweater

I crocheted a few years ago a huge 6x6 granny square blanket. Has a lot of holes in it from the style of pattern. $96 with cheap acrylic worsted weight yarn that I doubled up for a heavier product.
