Early Genesis music probably the most underrated progressive tunes EVER-unfortunately, they will be known more for their soft rock of the 80s. This song is a masterpiece
Phil looks positively manic in this version. His energy was always off the charts. Saw Genesis in 1978 (best concert of my life) and the drum duet stole the show. The crowd cheers as Collins moves to the drums.
Absolutely - I think here Phil must have been on copious amounts of cocaine, but it is an amazing performance. The 1978 tour with Bill Bruford I imagine was amazing. I don't take drugs myself, but this is a killer performance.
@@AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE Phil has only admitted to smoking pot before a gig, but at this time I think he was hanging with Clapton (before he dried out and went straight). Eric liked his coke, so you might be right. Phil also looks manic at the '80 Lyceum Theater concert. Great show. (the '78 tour was Then There Were Three and Bill had left before that)
@@rk41gator As someone who used to smoke cannabis in my teenage years, it definitely doesn't make you wide-eyed and intense, quite the opposite haha! So yes, I think it's like it was "The Clapton Effect". I wish I could have seen bands like this in their prime as you have - I've seen "Focus" live many a time, and Van Leer still has it to this day, and "Frost*", a great modern prog rock band (the frontman singer/keyboardist/composer Jem Godfrey used to write pop hits such as Atomic Kitten's "Whole Again" before going back to his prog influence).
@@AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE Good point about the wide-eyed intensity. LOL Though Collins was always intense; or should I say focused. As he grew older he took himself less seriously, but never lost his intensity for the music (which is why his emotion always came through). In concert I was totally unprepared for his on-stage charisma. Captivating!
Chester Thompson is as good a drummer as Phil Collins. He's just less... invasive! He's the one you hear for the first 4 minutes of this song, and his performance is equivalent in the Duet. It's very unfair to never mention him.
This song is a technical masterpiece. Virtuoso musicians every member. 11/16 time signiture in the intro and variating signitures throughout. Plus Phil is my favorite drummer hands down, so thumbs up.
just thumbs you up , there are two facts in life, genesis are the greatest band of all time and Raquel Welch is most beautiful woman to ever walk the earth.
@@WarrenCromartie2 in the intro there is a measure with a crazy time signature. Rick Beato broke it down on his channel. No need to count, just feel it. Yes, it's mostly 7/8 felt as: 2+2+3 in pairs (which is also the easiest for me to feel, probably because I'm a Genesis nut). Chester didn't have Phil's high energy "bite" on drums, but he flows so easily through all the odd time signatures, it's a pleasure to listen to.
Everyone on here is complimenting these guys as great musicians and song writers etc. But I'll bet no one knows that they are true pioneers on a technical side as well. Back around the time of this show, Genesis teamed up with a Dallas based company named Showco, put up 5 million dollars and funded the development of what was called varilights. They were high powered stage lights equipped with motorized dichroic filters allowing the lights to change colors in real time. It was a true game changer for the concert industry and for many years only Genesis could use them as they held the patent. Now days we see many "intelligent" lights that can move and change colors. But it was this band and these people that spear headed the development of such an ingenious innovation. Just thought you'd like to know.
I saw them in Toronto when they started using the Varilights. To see the light show move was literally amazing - a “did I really see that?” moment. The music was great but I’ll never forget the lightshow
Who broke Peter's Genesis Band...Dommage, car il était maître en drums, secondait bien Peter qui lui laissait toute sa place, mais Phil Collins écrivit de bien mièvres paroles&musiques ensuite...Supper got cold...
@@diegocanale1124 No way. I too feel it was a letdown when Hackett left, but they did not miss a beat (no pun intended). They started playing a different ball game!
What a fucking awesome song. I used to sneak in my 2 older sisters room and put Genesis on the turn table. They knew what I was doing. But since I loved their music aswell, they let me get away with it!! Love you Shar n Beth
Exactely! I always read people thrashing those two guys, they were BRILLIANT. One might prefere Hackett's style or sound, but I never heard Daryl play something bad or without taste. And Chester...he played for fucking Frank Zappa, he is a damn fine musician and I honestly prefere him to Brudford as a session musician in Genesis (needless to say that Bill is a drum god too)
This guy chester Thompson. I mean really . I've seen this guy live six , seven times live in arenas around D.C. Seeing is believing. This guy is the..... 😊
Phil is such a goofball dork, but he can get away with the weird faces, thumb seizure, and hawaiian shirts when he's singing such an amazing song! I would pay top dollar to see this entire album played live, with giant screens showing images of volcanos and the cartoon characters from the album artwork. Imagine seeing Squonk being captured!!!
That would be awesome! I would also pay top dollar to see the band play Foxtrot in its entire with even Phil. I love the way Phil sings Peter's part's.
Looking back from a Tarzan perspective, people forget how edgy Genesis was in the '70s. And even into the '80s Phil was very cool. He had enough confidence to act dorky and pull it off. It was always tongue-in-cheek. The 'Uncle Phil' thing started from his character on 'Phil the Shill' in Miami Vice (1985). That was a great episode.
"On your left, ON YOUR RIGHT! Crosses are green, and crosses are blue-your friends didn't make it through. Out of the fire, AND INTO THE FIGHT! Out of the dark, and into the light-well that's the way the heroes go." That is some of the best singing I've ever heard Phil do. The cool syncopation and the ballsy volume. He KILLS that bit. I mean, he's the stuff all the time, but those lines are badass.
4:24 I like that extra little instrumental break before the drum duet. 4:42 Phil lining his sticks up. Maybe he had double vision. He was pretty hyper at those gigs.😂👍
Actually got to see the three sides live tour (this one) at the show they actually filmed the concert footage from (Nassau Coliseum). My friend got me in as an usher (which I never did 2 seconds of) and got to see Phil and the guys during warmup.
My absolute favourite song by any version of Genesis. Was fortunate to see them twice with Steve who was to me the difference maker. Phil live was so insecure at the mike during this period he couldn't help his nervous energy antics. Chester was a Zappa drummer, of course he was spot on. Phil met Frank in a hotel lift and mentioned they were going to need a live drummer. Frank gave Phil Chester's number. He flew to London immediately as I believe they only had a week to rehearse.
So much ENERGY! "The music's playing, the notes are right, put your left foot first and move into light! The edge of this hill is the edge of the world, and if you're gonna cross, you'd better start doing it right..." Chills every time.
This might be the best I've heard him sing that part. He graduated from singer to frontman on this tour, and this might be the show where the light kinda came on for him. Plus, the band is cookin' too.
Collins fue el mejor músico del siglo XX sin dudas. El día que salga otro cantante y batero de ese nivel, EN UNA MISMA PERSONA se le va a poder discutir el puesto
Chester looks pretty intense also and I am pretty sure he has never snorted any foreign substances. If you watch the concert this drum solo cascades seamlessly into 'Los Endos'. (ps The two of them have other longer drum duets that will blow your mind) This band is phenomenal LIVE.
I've played in prog tribute bands for years, and hands down, the 1 song that always makes the band crap its collective panties is Dance on a Volcano. No idea what Genesis was thinking when they wrote this, but... wow. (Listens again, does laundry)
