This great threshing of the mystery of this revelation makes me realize how difficult it is to understand the nature of God. I don’t know if it’s a worthy thing to understand or ponder but when Christ talks to the apostles about the necessity of his going to heaven in order that he might send the Holy Spirit strikes me in a similar way. Is it possible to comprehend why Our Lord must Ascend into heaven first before he sends the Holy Spirit upon the Church? Are these mysteries important to wrap our heads around? Do they just emphasize the Lord’s lesson to us that “ his ways are not our ways” I don’t know if any of what I said is important or minutia, all that these scriptures point to, for me, is the awesomeness of Our God. And I do love to think on them even if they aren’t possible to clarify.

St. Epiphanius, Bishop of Cyprus (403 A.D.) “He has gone to search for our first parent, as for a lost sheep. Greatly desiring to visit those who live in darkness and in the shadow of death, he has gone to free from sorrow the captives Adam and Eve, he who is both God and the son of Eve. “The Lord approached them bearing the cross, the weapon that had won him the victory. At the sight of him, Adam, the first man he had created, struck his breast in terror and cried out to everyone: ‘My Lord be with you all.’ Christ answered him: ‘And with your spirit.’ “He took him by the hand and raised him up, saying: ‘Awake, O sleeper, and rise from the dead, and Christ will give you light! Hell was once separated into two parts in which Hell is the separation from God Who dwells in Heaven. When people think about Hell their thought is Gehenna which is both Purgatory where souls are purified and the Hell of the Damned where the unrepentant sinners both souls and demons remain forever. As Jesus discusses in Scripture many times over. The other part of Hell no longer exists it's the Bosom of Abraham also called the Limbo of the Fathers the dwelling of the righteous dead prior before the Advent of Jesus's Glory. The souls in the Limbo of the Fathers couldn't enter into Heaven because of original sin whether they entered directly into the Limbo of the Fathers or undergone a final purification in Purgatory before entering into the Limbo of the Fathers. The Limbo of the Fathers was a paradise in which these souls enjoyed the company of each other but it was an imperfect paradise as God was distant from them as God dwells in Heaven. When Jesus descended into Hell it was where the righteous dwelt in the Limbo of the Fathers and it was the Harrowing of Hell that Jesus opened the way into Heaven as He delivered these souls as well as all future souls of the righteous into Heaven where they would be with God. Like I said the Limbo of the Fathers no longer exists as original sin can no longer separate people from God because of Jesus.
Its really great that everything is so black and white with no sway into interpretation. You know, cause hell and heaven is black and white...up or down.

If you guys are interested in this topic check out the gospel of nicodemus:christs descent into hell. It was in the apocrypha. Taken out of the bible a few hundred years ago
Because Christ was Divine, death could not hold him. Christ in the tomb descended into Hades, not the Hades of the damned but the holding place for the dead Sheol and proclaimed the Gospel to those imprisoned spirits who had not heard the Gospel, from the time of Noah. Thereby openening the gates of Heaven which remained closed until then, taking those souls with him into heaven who prior to this had not heard Chist preach.
When I was taught the Catholic catechism in the 60’s, we were told no Catholic who wasn’t a Bishop had the right to interpret the Bible. Has this been changed?
Jesus is not just the God of the living but also of the dead. He is not just Immanuel for us living but also Immanuel for those who died before he was incarnated.
Council of Trent said when the Faithful hold a belief for many centuries without correction it is to be considered an infallible belief. The Harrowing of Hell, and the four regions of hell, one of them being the Limbo of the Fathers - aka Paradise and Abraham's Bosom - is just such a belief.
I know it is not a book in the Bible, but I recently watched a video on UA-cam. It is called the Gospel of Nicodemus and the acts of Pilate. I believe it is scriptural. It discusses in length of christ conquered death and Hell. It also explains what happened to the people that were raised from the dead.
I am/was confessed by the use of the word "hell". My understanding of hell is a place e for damned souls To spend eternity away from Christ and tormented. Purgatory is where would wait for 'the good news'. Now I think what is being said is help and purgatory are the same. Yes?
Jesus descended into Sheol. Sheol is a waiting place, purgatory is a place (or state) of purification. Gehenna (or "hell") is the place for damned souls, but the word "hell" is a bit unprecise
Where does Abraham bosom enter into this picture of Sheol? It was divided into Abrahams bosom and Hades. The souls in Hades had rejected God and the promise of a messiah but those in Abraham’s bosom we’re not in torment.

The Bible does not say anything about Christ descending into the spirit world or a place called hell to preach those who are in prison, people love to add onto the Word of God which is not there.
@@ninamarise237 sometime were disobedience, when once the long-suffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is right souls were saved by water. 1 Peter 3:18-20 what Peter says that Christ preached to these spirits in prison? Verse 20 says, "while the ark was a preparing" in other words, while was being built. A simple way to understand these verses is that they are that Christ, through the Holy Spirit, was present during the 120 years that Noah was preaching to men and women that they would be lost if they did not choose to come into the safety of the ark. During all this time, Jesus was preaching to these lost individuals. Isn't this a beautiful illustration of God's love and redemptive power even before Jesus death at Cavalry? Some have seen in the verse evidence that individuals continue as spirits after death and that some,at least, have another opportunity to respond to the gospel. Those "in prison" refers to the lost. In Psalm 142:7,David prays,"Bring my soul out of prison." And Paul refers to"captivity to the law of sin."( Romans 7:23). We are thrown into "prison" of circumstances controlled by Satan, the prince of this earth, until we respond to the pleading of Jesus and the Holy Spirit and make Jesus the Lord of our lives. In Noah's day,the ark represented coming into the safety of salvation in Jesus. Today,we do the same by accepting Jesus, confessing our sins, and keeping all of his commandments by God's grace. Through His death on the cross of Calvary. Jesus is now our ark of safety from the consequences of sin and the devil. We need to understand that there is nothing in this text that would suggest that Jesus went somewhere " below the earth" to preach to the lost or hell or anything else. What purpose would it serve. The Bible nowhere teaches that those are lost have another opportunity after death to accept the gospel invitation. To summarize,then,1 Peter 3:18-20 tells us three main things: 1. Jesus preached by the Holy Spirit. 2. This preaching by the Holy Spirit was done during the time of the ark was being built. 3. Jesus message was an opportunity for those bound in the prison house of sin to break the chains of death and accept the free gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ, our Lord. In other words, the people of Noah's day had the same opportunity to be saved as we do,by the heeding of the Holy Spirit.
That was my first thought too but Dr. Pitre and the Church's living tradition he studies doesn't seem to think so. My guess of why is my theory the Old Testament sanctuary cities were typological foreshadowing of purgatory (in the promised land or heaven, but one could still take sanction there if needed and accepted, but then he couldn't leave until the current high priest dies). So, if those cities are types of purgatory, and those cities as mentioned were in the promised land, then my completely fallible take is purgatory is in heaven. And Christ didn't go back there until His Ascension.
@@paulmiller3469 thanks paul the reason i come up with that question 1 peter 3-4 is the most Abused passage pertaining to the doctrine of purgatory here in the philippines
To my understanding (which can very well be wrong) no. Since purgatory is a state of purification for the saved. But before the Holy Sacrifice of the Cross there was no salvation. So there was no purgatory before then I believe. So the descent into hell is the freeing of the prophets and those in “hell of the just.” But a good biblical support for purgatory comes from 1 Corinthians 3:10-15 We see that those who build their foundation on Christ, but have bad works are saved, but only through flames. That perfectly matches our view that those who die in sanctifying grace (built there foundation on Christ), but have venial sins/imperfect union with God (bad works), will be saved - but must undergo purgation.
in his General Audience of 11 January 1989, John-Paul II claimed that the descent of Our Lord into hell/realm of the dead (however you want to phrase it) in the Creed and in St Peter's epistle simply means His body was buried in the tomb. this seems to be clear heresy and contrary to the Church's teaching for 2,000 years. It's odd that we think it so scary "the idea of Christ going to the place of the dead". It's like we lose touch with the fact that he is God, the creator of Sheol. Once he was put to death & freed from his human body, he would be again fully empowered, being God. Nothing that he created would scare or hurt him.
WOW to have this cleared up is a huge blessing. I read the catachism but without a knowledgeable teacher to help you understand it, it was not an understanding I could attain to!
I have a question. Albeit it may be dumb. If Jesus is recognized to be the Word of God, then when the father speaks in the NT (for example the baptism of Jesus) how is this understood? No longer is it the Word preexisting that speaks but rather the father on his own accord. So my question is when can we really distinguish between who is speaking in the OT like the creation narrative commands, if the NT can demonstrate that the “Commands” can be said by the Father apart from the son?
I think the simple answer is that you can’t tell when an OT passage only says it’s the LORD (YHWH). It could mean anyone of the three Persons of the Holy Trinity, though most likely the Father as YHWH was primarily understood as a Heavenly Father figure and least likely the Holy Spirit as I don’t recall it speaks directly but rather only indirectly through the prophets and Christians. It could also mean all Three Persons (One God) speaking, as I recall there are passages saying “we” - don’t quote me on this though as I am no expert in either Hebrew or Greek. Good question but it is more like a theological speculation question. As long as one’s answer doesn’t presuppose or lead to errors regarding faith and morals (and then logic of course), it is not wrong per se. But of course some answers would be better and more likely than others. My 2 cents. 👍🏼😊 God bless.
Desmond: I think your question is more appropriate for a graduate seminar on the Trinity. Catholic faith tells us there are three Persons in the Trinity - yet, one nature and will. When the son took on a tent of human flesh and became man, the son was still in the bosom of the Father in heaven. So your question isn't dumb, it's profound, for it hints at the mysteries of the Trinity.
@Desmond Hutchinson Sometimes you can distinguish which Person of the Holy Trinity is speaking in the Old Testament. For example Jesus told St. John in the book of Apocalypse that He is, ‘the First and the Last’ (22:13). God told Isaiah the same thing in Isaiah 44:6. Therefore it was Jesus who was speaking at that particular moment. It was also specifically Jesus, the second person of the Holy Trinity who spoke to Moses in Exodus 3:14 and said ‘I AM WHO AM’ because Jesus mentioned this in St. John 8:58. In Genesis 11:7 One Person of the Holy Trinity says “...Let us go down, and there confound their tongue...” This is God the Holy Ghost speaking to His 2 Co-Equals, since it was God The Holy Ghost who gave the apostles the gift of tongues. So due to the demonic pride of men in Babel, God confused them and during Pentecost God The Holy Ghost United them. Other parallels and examples could be given but hope this helps. People get confused about this because they don’t understand the Dogma of the Holy Trinity. One God in Three distinct Persons, all co equal and co eternal.
In Christianity, the term “Last Judgment” is generally understood as referring to an event in the distant future. In reality, however, the Last Judgment already took place long ago - namely, when Christ descended into hell after his crucifixion, penetrating into the domain of his adversary, Lucifer. There, he held a reckoning, spirit to spirit. Until that point, Lucifer had exercised an almost unrestricted dominion over his subjects. In accordance with the new law, Lucifer must now release every being who wishes to return home to the Father’s house. In the most precise detail, the new law maps out the ascent for all fallen creatures. This order is unchangeable - it will retain its validity until the “end of the world”, that is, until this earthly world has been spiritualized and the last spirit separated from God has found the path back into the kingdom of heaven. 1 Corinthians :3
Lucifer is barely mentioned in the Bible. The story of Lucifer being a ruler of Hell is not in the Bible. Lucifer being described as one of God's favored angels is not in the Bible. Jesus descending into Hell is not in the Bible.

My guess for Peter's motivation for writing that is he repeatedly got asked the same question everybody coming to Christianity now asks: "So you're saying everybody who sinned and died before the Resurrection is screwed?"
It's also apparent that Moses and Elijah were physically present, which either means they never died, or they'd been resurrected before the crucifixion. I wouldn't respond to a reasonable question about soteriology by suggesting the answer is readily apparent from the transfiguration.

Since Hell's primarily characteristic is being separated from God, and since Christ is God, wouldn't his descent into the limbo of the fathers mean it was no longer Hell? Wouldn't Christ going to Hell by definition mean it's no longer Hell, at least as long as he was there?
Ever since the assimilation of the pagan belief of hell fire by the RCC(and later the Orthodox church and Protestantism), it was used by christendom as a fear tactic to control people and swindle them. Presenting hell as a "separation from God" by religionists developed when some of them realized that their "fire and brimstone" message wasn't as effective as it had been. So a "different approach" proved to be more palatable.
@@ripcord8738 Uh no actually Jesus talks about hell more than he talks about heaven clearly you haven't read the Gospels. @Previous Super Admin Of DBFR (BaansuUchiha) correct: someone is paying attention, you got me there😁thanks for that. One of the reasons the bible exists is for CORRECTION😁read also john 11.v 11 to 14. However, the FACT that the dead know nothing at all is written in it , with Gods knowledge, it must then be the truth . I also know we are spirit beings , therefore the body dies, but the spirit or soul lives on..how do we know then if the good and bad souls are in a place of waiting together?..im not sure. We know the good ones loyal to jesus are for sure, but what state of consciousness theyre in , remains a mystery over there.... But if the question is asked, do the dead know anything, the bible answers that question clearly . If it were not true, surely it would not be in the scriptures, in that context.i also know for certain that the demons are still on this earth in spirit form, i see and hear and feel them, but then they were never entirely human. They were able to transform into humans and mate with humans at one point before the flood, but they, bring rebellious angelic beings, have since had there wings clipped, kicked out of heaven, now just hanging around influencing and tormenting the righteous, and deceiving others to an eternal death. Anyway, their time is running out.. Judgement day is coming, all who have died from adam and eve will rise up from the grave to face the lamb of God in judgement....
@Previous Super Admin Of DBFR (BaansuUchiha) as regards to the rich man who overlooked the beggar asking for water, the way i and other scholars understand it is that Jesus was prophesising, about future events , as he so often did.
After Jesus descending to hell, He resurrected in his new heavenly body before ascending to heaven, He told Mary not to touch Him because he had not yet ascended to Heaven. So why do you teach that when a true christian dies, he goes to heaven although the person has not resurrected yet?

When Jesus was on earth he made his presence known. His ministry focused primarily on the Jews(whether they knew him or not) but it was for anyone that was interested. He also knew that the Kingdom message would increase exponentially, after his death. Matt.24:14;Acts 1:8
An interesting point, though, which Dr Pitre did not seem to address, is the fact that Moses and Elijah had apparently already escaped the World of the Dead even before Jesus' Passion/Death and Resurrection. The story of the Transfiguration has both of them appearing on the mountain and talking with Jesus. And we know from Scripture that Elijah, like the Virgin Mary, was taken up bodily to Heaven....it is less-clear about what happened with Moses, although there is a verse that says no one knows where he was buried, and that there was a supernatural argument about what was to happen to his body.
Still not getting this, what is the point of preaching to the souls of those who were disobedient at the time of the flood, since these are damned souls? Augustine and Thomas make the most sense.

@Catholic Productions When Jesus died on the cross from his perspective is what I will offer you. When Jesus died on the cross the whole world went dark and his soul came out of his body and his sight became monochromatic with each flashing of light he could see more. Jesus heard a clicking sound as the pitch became louder he saw a blue Angel it had no legs and it came close to him it then placed both his hands on the lifeless head of Jesus and sampled all his memories from the bodies head. Jesus kept watching his body it was loosing heat, you see Jesus could see with new eye's and as he watched his body lose heat he could see his circulatory system and nervous system he could see the blood that was still warm in his veins. He watched as the heat from his body dissipated, his body turned black and indistinguishable from the log he was attached to. Jesus thanked his body for taking care of him and said goodbye to it, then all of a sudden he dropped down into the Earth into a place called Sheol, he looked down and beneath him was another Angel an Ophanim which is a wheel Angel that looked like molten gold that spun counter clockwise the Ophanim had eyes on it's side and was very beautiful to behold. The Ophanim held him in place, it did this so that the other Angel could do his job. The blue Angel then moved over to Jesus and placed his hands on ether sides of Jesus head sampling all of Jesus memories so he could report his findings to the Dominion Angel that would soon be there with them. Then the blue Angel moved out away from Jesus about 10 feet, suddenly the Dominion Angel appeared and the blue Angel made Angelic Sounds reported his findings to the Dominion Angel after that the Dominion ordered the blue Angel to open a portal back to Jesus body. Then the Dominion Angel left and the blue Angel came back to him and turned to Jesus left looking away from him the Angel opened a portal using his Angelic Sounds although Jesus could not hear him making sounds that is what happened. Now that the portal was open Jesus could see his body in the portal lying there In his bed he was younger and still alive you see this was Jesus at a younger age and it was so ordered that the Ophanim release Jesus and he did and Jesus was released Jesus then ordered all the old testament saints to be woken up in Sheol and then he ordered that a place be made for each one of them in heaven. Then Jesus moved over to that place called the bottomless pit and walked across the lava into the room called hell. Jesus saw a endless line of people all of them in hell on their knees with their heads placed on a platform, their hands placed on ether sides of their heads locking them into their own personal hell in side of their own minds. Jesus then ordered the Servitor Angel to wake up those that were closest to him and the Servitor moved down the line saying names and as he spoke names the line would stop at that person the Servitor then approached each one and removed their hands from their heads and a scream came from them as they transitioned from the mental Hell they were in to consciousness. After the Servitor Angel woke a number of them he passed by Jesus and bowed down to him and said it is done. Jesus spoke with them for some time, what was said to them only they know, not even the Servitor could hear what Jesus was saying. After Jesus spoke he moved out back to the portal and placed his left hand up towards the portal, facing his palm right at it then widening his fingers a great boom was heard as the portal activated. Jesus took his right hand and made a gesture and began to fast forward the portal to his body lying lifeless in his tomb in the place called Golgotha. Jesus spoke a language known only to God and the council of Angels. This language transformed Jesus's body to be much like that of an Angel and a human all in one. Jesus had to upgrade his body because if he hadn't he would need to wait for years to get all his memories back because Sheol is a place of forgetfulness and it takes time for the body and the souls memories to merge. Jesus then moved into the portal piercing the Veil between life and death thus completing his resurrection.
And just how do you think all this happened the way you say. It doesn’t Amy anything about blue angels or anything about them getting reinstated in heaven. They were IN heaven and fell from heaven of their own will. They have no chance of going back.
Fair play to this fellow ..Von Balthasar , John Paul II and Ben XVI have differing views and some differing within their own writing . Christ engages with all humanity , living and dead, because he is Lord of all ...in the Paschal Mystery .
John of Damascus An Exposition of the Orthodox Faith Book III Chapter 29. Concerning the Descent to Hades. The soul when it was deified descended into Hades, in order that, just as the Sun of Righteousness (Malachi 4:2 )rose for those upon the earth, so likewise He might bring light to those who sit under the earth in darkness and shadow of death (Isaiah 9:2) in order that just as He brought the message of peace to those upon the earth, and of release to the prisoners, and of sight to the blind , and became to those who believed the Author of everlasting salvation and to those who did not believe a reproach of their unbelief (1 Peter 3:19), so He might become the same to those in Hades : That every knee should bow to Him, of things in heaven, and things in earth and things under the earth. (Philippians 2:10) And thus after He had freed those who had been bound for ages, straightway He rose again from the dead, showing us the way of resurrection.
"The soul that sinneth, it shall die." - Ezekiel 18:20 "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin." - 2nd Corinthians 5:21 "Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once; but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God." - Romans 6:9,10 KJV I submit therefore, that when Christ died on the cross, so did his soul.
Saint (Doctor of the Church ) Ephraim the Syrian, gives a typical witness to the original tradition expressed in Matthew 16:18. Here Ephraim has Death personified speaking: “My throne was set for me in Sheol: and one arose that was dead, and hurled me from it. Every man feared me alone, and I feared no man. Terror and trouble were among the living, rest and peace among the dead. In a man that was slain lo! There has entered into Sheol He that takes her captive. I used to take all men captive: the Son of Captivity Whom I took captive has taken me captive. He Whom I took captive has led her away and is gone to Paradise. R., Blessed is He Who has quickened the dead of Sheol by His Cross!” Saint (Doctor) Ephraim the Syrian. Nisibene Hymns; Hymn 38 In the preceding hymn, Ephraim gives a witness to the tradition that Jesus destroyed the captivity that Death had over people…a captivity that is represented metaphorically by the Jewish expression “gates of Sheol”…
May I make some simple observations as an outsider? First, there could be a distinction between spirit and soul. By that I mean a soul is bound to a particular body or incarnation and the spirit is the "energizing motivator" that transcends particular incarnation (body) and any idea of an ego around that body. It would make sense to say that the soul is captured by the spirit, much like a body is "possessed" by a "demon". It is not mentioned as much, but saints are also "possessed" by "angels". The spirits, however are not identifiable with a particular incarnation, body, or ego. Thus, the "spirits in prison" would not be particular departed souls, such as your wicked uncle Harry, but the dominant negative emotional states animating the mind. When Christ was "made alive in the spirit", one can conclude that He returned to these dominate states - they be love and compassion. The current research on the Shroud of Turin imply that Christ was not a body with a soul, but a pure manifestation of spirit made visible to souls. The appearances after the Resurrection to some of the disciples is another indication of this ability (to appear as flesh). These states (love and compassion) are liberating. The "spirits in prison" have not experienced the liberation of love and compassion, and are thus bound, such as "in prison", to the harmful consequences of such states - such as anger, jealousy, lust, etc. Preaching to these spirits would be something like showing these spirits the consequences of these states, how these states are preventing happiness (binding or imprisoning them), and introducing them to the states that liberate, such as love and compassion. Alas, these spirits may not have had "the ears to hear".

St. Epiphanius, Bishop of Cyprus (403 A.D.)
“He has gone to search for our first parent, as for a lost sheep. Greatly desiring to visit those who live in darkness and in the shadow of death, he has gone to free from sorrow the captives Adam and Eve, he who is both God and the son of Eve.
“The Lord approached them bearing the cross, the weapon that had won him the victory. At the sight of him, Adam, the first man he had created, struck his breast in terror and cried out to everyone: ‘My Lord be with you all.’ Christ answered him: ‘And with your spirit.’
“He took him by the hand and raised him up, saying: ‘Awake, O sleeper, and rise from the dead, and Christ will give you light! I did not create you to be held a prisoner in hell. Rise from the dead, for I am the life of the dead!'”

Original sin can separate man from God, if they are not Baptized.
Its really great that everything is so black and white with no sway into interpretation. You know, cause hell and heaven is black and white...up or down.

My understanding of hell is a place e for damned souls
To spend eternity away from Christ and tormented.
Jesus descent into hell to preach the good news and redemption so does this imply that hell has an end when the souls there in will be free?
Where does Abraham bosom enter into this picture of Sheol? It was divided into Abrahams bosom and Hades. The souls in Hades had rejected God and the promise of a messiah but those in Abraham’s bosom we’re not in torment.

sometime were disobedience, when once the long-suffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is right souls were saved by water. 1 Peter 3:18-20
what Peter says that Christ preached to these spirits in prison? To summarize,then,1 Peter 3:18-20 tells us three main things:
Great video! I believe he did both 2 and 3 of the views. Both make sense.
Hello Dr. Brant Pitre. Can we connect the passage "the Spirit in the Prison" to purgatory? Thank you and Godbless
So the descent into hell is the freeing of the prophets and those in “hell of the just.”
But a good biblical support for purgatory comes from 1 Corinthians 3:10-15
We see that those who build their foundation on Christ, but have bad works are saved, but only through flames. That perfectly matches our view that those who die in sanctifying grace (built there foundation on Christ), but have venial sins/imperfect union with God (bad works), will be saved - but must undergo purgation.

I learned this at school in Ireland in 1960 without a Catechism. Its in the Apostles Creed.
@@SowerOfMustardSeed I appreciate your 2 cents haha

Desmond: I think your question is more appropriate for a graduate seminar on the Trinity. Catholic faith tells us there are three Persons in the Trinity - yet, one nature and will. When the son took on a tent of human flesh and became man, the son was still in the bosom of the Father in heaven. So your question isn't dumb, it's profound, for it hints at the mysteries of the Trinity.
@Desmond Hutchinson
Sometimes you can distinguish which Person of the Holy Trinity is speaking in the Old Testament.
What about Witnessing to the AntiChrist? I have Heard that One as well.
Our LORD was not in hell (hades is the realm of the dead), HE said to the thief: today you will be with me in paradise!
Agreed. These interpretations dilute the word are and are not based on scripture.
This is so confusing! I don't know what to believe 😭😭

@patriceagulu8315 NO, GOD has HIS appointed times and plans and you should get saved while you can - you won't get another chance to get saved if you miss the upcoming rapture! @patriceagulu8315 I know that the whore of Babylon (=Vatican, see Revelation 17 and 18) doesn't teach End Times prophecy nd that's a terrible sin because adding or subtracting to the Word of GOD leads to damnation, just read the Bible for yourself! Everyone who studies the Bible can see that the rapture and the 2nd coming are 2 different events - but the false "church" of Rome doesn't even teach the 2nd coming of our Lord and Savior JESUS CHRIST! How did his followers know Jesus went to hell and back?
I admit. I’m still confused lol. I missed something, Did he take the ones with him or did he just preach to them & leave them there? 🤷🏾♂️.
Amen I pray everyday for the salvation of the Lord Jesus in his name I ask for forgiveness amen
We are fortunate to have you explain this. We say the Apostles' Creed during mass on special occasions but priests dont explain at all.
My guess for Peter's motivation for writing that is he repeatedly got asked the same question everybody coming to Christianity now asks: "So you're saying everybody who sinned and died before the Resurrection is screwed?"
Good point.
For us it's apparent that's not true. Jesus was conversing with Moses and Elijah during the transfiguration.

Isaiah 33:12-14 And the people shall be as ashes after a fire, as a bundle of thorns they shall be burnt with fire. THE BIBLE SAID: THE DEAD KNOW NOTHING AT ALL.
. SO ....that negates all the doctrines & interpretations of this topic as not what we think it is...
I have studied the bible 30 years, & dont have a clear cut explanation for what or why JESUS went to sheol....
The bible does say that GODS works are BEYOND our human comprehension.
Seems to be the case here....
Nobody really knows....
@po18guy no.the words spoken are not MINE.
The BIBLE cannot be wrong.
Period.
I am also well aware of CONTEXT.
Thanks
Dr Petri, why did Jesus need to preach to the souls in hell if those souls are already condemn?
After Jesus descending to hell, He resurrected in his new heavenly body before ascending to heaven, He told Mary not to touch Him because he had not yet ascended to Heaven. So why do you teach that when a true christian dies, he goes to heaven although the person has not resurrected yet?

Could Jesus have made his presence known and preached to the righteous pagans and jews who did not know him.
When Jesus was on earth he made his presence known.
His ministry focused primarily on the Jews(whether they knew him or not) but it was for anyone that was interested.
He also knew that the Kingdom message would increase exponentially, after his death. Matt.24:14;Acts 1:8
Could this type of hell be purgatory or nah
Why venerate someone who burned in hell?
An interesting point, though, which Dr Pitre did not seem to address, is the fact that Moses and Elijah had apparently already escaped the World of the Dead even before Jesus' Passion/Death and Resurrection. The story of the Transfiguration has both of them appearing on the mountain and talking with Jesus. And we know from Scripture that Elijah, like the Virgin Mary, was taken up bodily to Heaven....it is less-clear about what happened with Moses, although there is a verse that says no one knows where he was buried, and that there was a supernatural argument about what was to happen to his body.
Could made alive in the Spirit just be how they said alive in Spirit without body being alive?.
Still not getting this, what is the point of preaching to the souls of those who were disobedient at the time of the flood, since these are damned souls? Augustine and Thomas make the most sense.

When Jesus died on the cross from his perspective is what I will offer you.
I often wonder if Aquinas or Augustine were alive today, would they have the same world view?

An Exposition of the Orthodox Faith Book III
Chapter 29.

I submit therefore, that when Christ died on the cross, so did his soul.
Saint (Doctor of the Church ) Ephraim the Syrian, gives a typical witness to the original tradition expressed in Matthew 16:18. Here Ephraim has Death personified speaking:
“My throne was set for me in Sheol: and one arose that was dead, and hurled me from it. R., Blessed is He Who has quickened the dead of Sheol by His Cross!”
Saint (Doctor) Ephraim the Syrian. Nisibene Hymns; Hymn 38
In the preceding hymn, Ephraim gives a witness to the tradition that Jesus destroyed the captivity that Death had over people…a captivity that is represented metaphorically by the Jewish expression “gates of Sheol”…
