I am a single 25 year old female graduate student living by myself, about a month ago my regulator broke. Because of this video and the video on how to remove the door panel I was able to get the part (from 1A Auto Parts) and tools I needed to get the job done. I need to say thank you and what a great job explaining on how to do things. You helped me with every step. Unfortunately when replacing the regulator that was very badly broken, it had also broke the window sash, It would be great if you could create a step by step video on how to replace the window sash. I have already ordered the part from you! Thanks again!
Hi Kristi, Thanks for checking us out. This video will show you how to replace the sash connectors on your Oldsmobile Alero. Hope this helps you out.1aauto.com 866-403-3393
Thank you sooo much..I have a 1999 grand prix..window motor went and the regulator seemed bent..so my window was not rolling up and down..I found the motor and regulator on amazon for 58 bucks and the dealer wanted 300 ..wow..and next task was to find someone to install it..most places wanted 75 bucks..but with the help of your video..my husband installed it in less than 20minutes with no problemo..(((wow)))..thanks for all dedication and help with your youtube videos...
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! With your help I was able to fix this with the help of my son - all by our selves!!! Both my front windows have been broken for a YEAR. So HAPPY ONE WORKS AGAIN!!! Now for the drivers side window... YAY!
You're welcome. The motor could be betting tired, or you may want to take the door panel off to see of the window regulator is broke. You could also try to spray the window seals with silicone spray to see if that helps it to glide up and down a little easier.
My 2001 Grand Am had a broken motor on the drivers side and a broken clip on the passenger side. After watching the video, I felt confident that I could make the repairs myself. I ordered the parts (they arrived in business 3 days) and went to work. The step-by-step video was spot-on. With a little patience, I was able to remove and replace both regulators on my car. The local GM dealer quoted me $350 per door. I think I paid $130 for both the parts (including delivery) from 1A. I saved at least $550 by doing this myself. Thanks 1A!!
I can't tell you how much I appreciate all of your videos. I live in Hawaii and I just bought a 2001 Pontiac Grand AM for my son as a surprise when he gets home from vacation. All of these minor repairs that I have done saved me tons of cash. You make it so easy anyone can do it. I replaced my window regulator in less than an hour...OMG! AMAZING! Thank you so very much. Please keep the videos coming.
I'm so glad I found this video...just changed two front regulators in no time. The shop quoted me a while back at $600 for a single replacement (which I thought was ridiculous)! I got a pair of new regulators from ebay for $75 and spent about an hour replacing them. Just saved $1100...this calls for a beer.
Came here from the door panel video so glad you fast forwarded through that step in this video. Just recentky had a 99 grand am given to me to repay a debt and it has no working windows or door speakers so these 2 videos will help me tremendously.
If you search on our website 1aauto.com we do carry some replacement sash connectors and some window channel guides. You may want to check to see if it looks like the part that has broke on your window.
If it's stuck in the up position it'll be easier to remove the bolts that we show in the video on the regulator. You can use painters tape to tape the window in the up position so that it doesn't fall down once the regulator is removed. Hope this helps you out.
If you are just replacing the regulator the white clips will stay clued to the window and you just have to screw the new regulator onto the window. If you are replacing the glass you’ll have to buy new clips and clue them too the glass and then you can screw the regulator onto the window.
If you're just replacing a bad window regulator, this video will show you how to do that. If you need to replace the window, once the regulator is free from the window you may be able to pull it out of the top of the door. Sometimes this requires you to remove any weatherstrip that the window may be coming into contact with while trying to remove it. You may also need to angle the glass in and out, in order to take it out of the door and replace it with a new piece of glass. Hope this helps you.
@sritz1967 You could try to use some silicone spray (found at the auto parts store) to spray on the weatherstrip around the door glass. This will help it to glide easier.
@Garonyldas As far as the switch being backward, your regulator is wired backward. It is fixable. You need a small screw driver or paperclip. Note or take a picture of how the regulator wires are installed in the plastic connector. With the regulator unplugged force the small screwdriver or a paperclip in to the middle of each terminal. It should unlock a tab then the wire pulls out from the back side. Pull the tab on the terminal back up so it will lock back in to the connector.
Re: 2000 Grand Am Thanks so much for your great video. whole motor and regulator replacement went quick and easy. I will pass this info to anyone needing help on window fixes Mike, You Rock! The few minor part discrepancies were not a problem. Got my parts with car purchase and window motor was wired backwards,,,easy fix with butt splices.
Thank you so very much for posting this, my whole window fell in the door and the dealership here gave me an estimate of $500 for a repair. Turns out that the "blooper" you had was the same problem I had. The piece that moved the window up and down the track shattered. That ought to be fairly cheap to replace. Once again, thank you!
You can use a heat gun to remove the sash connections you just need to be careful not to overheat the glass and crack it. I believe they do sell some epoxy remover at your local parts store or you could try looking up what other people on through the online forms.
@adcnortty your new window regulator should bolt right in as the video shows. You may want to check to make sure that the cables aren't twisted and that the window bracket is facing the right way.
You could take the door panel off to see if the cable on the window regulator has broken. You could also test the plug going to the window motor with a test light to see if the motor has power going to it.
UPDATE: Success!!! I got my part in a few days, as promised. I'm to cheap for faster delivery. I have a 4 door but like the video states its the same but different. Got the job done an about an hour and it works great!!! AND it was half the price of the " ---- Know How" Parts place. Which is awesome because my younger driver has a slight issue with keeping a car in one piece for any extended period of time.
You may want to test the power going to the door from the switch. If it's on the driverside, and the switch is bad, you may need a new master switch. Hope this helps you out.
@Garonyldas As far as not going up all the way that is very odd. The regs usually just go until they either the window is all up or the down until it hits the bottom stop. If you want send me a PM with where you purchased the reg from. There are various manufacturer's of these regs and we like to avoid the lower quality ones.
@BondoFox Nothing leaking just some melting snow running down the driveway. I have not yet taken apart a '98 so I can't help you directly. I can say that it is probably similar, some screws and bolts then clips hold it on. My advice is just don't force it. If it does not seem to be coming apart, pause look for another screw or bolt before pulling or potentially breaking something.
@Mr16430 They should connect to the lower part of the window with a special adhesive, and then bolt to the window regulator where the hole is in the tab.
Appreciate you taking time do offer this to the public! How about a 2004 grand prix??? Window was partially down, tried to roll up, heard a thunk and now won't move either way. Auto glass repair shop thought it was a regulator.
@danchez We do carry new sash connectors that hold the window to the window regualtor on our website Part Number: 1AWRG00523 on our website, 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
I have the same issue. First, do I have to remove the window to get rid of the old broken clips stuck on the window? Also, would this require some epoxy or something to glue the new clips in place? Any possibility of a video on this?
@phouli65 You should be able to hold the window up with some painters tape, and then unbolt the window regulator from the window and remove it. Hope this helps you out.
@83th3l You may want to take the door panel off and look at the regulator as it goes up and down. Once the panel is off then you can more than likely see what's causing the issue. Hope this helps you out.
+Tyrone Coleman It's hard to make a diagnosis over the internet, but, if the motor runs, but the window doesn't move, that does sound like it could be a problem with the regulator.
Normally when there is an issue with power it is related to a frayed wire possibly in the hinge of the door itself. 9 times out of 10, the issue is a wire related one and not a fuse holder one.
Thanks for the great video. I am not very good at working on vehicles and with your help I replace the window sash connectors and got the door back together so it looks like new.
@bardaso It sounds like there may be something binding on the window regulator. It could possible also be a dry weatherstrip seal. You could try a little silicon spray on them if that's the case.
@filipina1979 If it has manual windows check to see if there's something binding it up inside the door. If there isn't then it's more than likely the door regulator that has worn out. If you have electric windows, the window motor may be tired, you could try to spray some silicon spray on the weatherstrip that seals around the window on your 1999 Pontiac Grand AM.
@ElisaDawn1989 Once you have unbolted the window from the reg you should be able to rotate the back of the window forward and to the outside of the car then pull the window up and out.
Awesome videos, Chilton leaves some safety details out that you mentioned, (taping glass, etc..) I left my window down too many times during rain storms and the manual WR got rusted thus pushing window out of track. After conjuring the motivation to replace it, it's not so bad, I'd rather do brakes though. I have a 94 grand am 2dr, for anyone that has rivets holding the regulator, pop out the stem of rivet with an awl and hammer (hit it like you mean it too). Nut and bolt the new one IMO.
@adcnortty Yes we do have these available on our website. They are called window regulator sash connectors. Here's a link to them on our website, just copy and paste into your browser. 1aauto.com/1A/WindowRegulators/Pontiac/GrandAm/1AWRG00523/266741/1999?ATony
Let the vehicle get up to temperature. Then with the car running check the level of the transmission fluid. It looks like the oil dipstick and should be labeled as transmission. Pull the dipstick out and wipe the fluid off, then stick it back into the tube and pull it out and then check the level. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
good video, but when i checked my grand am i realized it was the white plastic window guide on the cable. i had already bought the sash from my dealer and it was 30$, luckily they had a return policy since i didn't open them. i'm gonna try to remove the regulator like in the video and add new guides to it. thanks for showing me how to take it off. Maybe you can show me how to change the fuel filter on the Grand am too, its in a tight spot. Thanks
It sounds like the window regulator may have failed on you. If you take the door panel off you should be able to tell if the cable has snapped. Here's a link to them on our website if you end up needing one. 1aauto.com/1A/WindowRegulators/Pontiac/GrandPrix/-/-/2004?ATony
@dgriff1n There should be some plastic clips that hold the bottom of the window to the regulator called window sash connectors. We sell them on our website. Here's a link to them, they're currently out of stock, but if you add your email address to the "Notify Me" button, you'll receive an email when they are available. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com/1A/WindowRegulators/Pontiac/GrandAm/1AWRG00523/266741/1999
@Brad Brinkmann You may want to take a look at the power window motor to see if it needs to be replaced. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Awesome video! I used this to replace my regulator in my 1999 GT. One question... what would cause the switch to be reversed? I now have to pull the switch back to raise and push it up to lower!?? The connector only goes on one way.
@littlemanmays1187 We sell them on our website they are called sash connectors. They are under the window regulator category or you can just search 'grand am sash'
Would this be the same for the Bonneville? I searched Beneville on your channel and this is the video that was in the results. So I figured you put it in the tags for a reason.
Great video. May be ordering a regulator. Had a broken sash clip that I replaced 2 months ago... already broke again. Do you think this is a regulator issue where it is somehow tracking improperly and causing the clips to fail? Replacing the clips is a pain, so if I'm going to do it again, I may just do the regulator, too, if you think it will help.
I am in the process of changing the regulator on my 2003 Grand Am. I have run into the same problem you did in that the little clips that attach the glass to the regulator have both broken off. Can new ones be re-attached, or do you have to get a whole new piece of glass with them already attached to it? Thanks for the great video!
Great video, helped me out on 2 different cars. Question: My car is a 2002 Grand Am(2 door) with a broken window clip. I removed the window and regulator, got the broken clip off the window and am ready to put it back in. But I am confused as to how many clips there are supposed to be - 1 or 2? There is only one there but there is epoxy on the front of the window where it looks like there used to be a second clip, but I can't see how it would attach to the regulator. Any thoughts?
@xMurderxmurderjoey There are a couple of springs on those window regulators. You might want to check to see if they are still intact. If you can't repair them we do sell new replacement ones on our website 1aauto.com Here's a link to them on our website. 1aauto.com/1A/WindowRegulators/Pontiac/GrandAm/1AWRK00287/515893/1995?ATony
I have a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP supercharger. I need to replace the window motors and regulators on the front and back windows. I watched the video on a 99 Grand am, is it comparable to the 98 grand prix? I couldn't find a video that showed my exact year model. If you have any suggestions please share. Thank you for your time.
yes, most all GM products are quite the same with the hardware and installation. Grand Prix, Grand Am, Monte Carlo, etc from 98 to 05 models. door panels differ but the components inside are similiar and the steps are the same. you can do it!

@kcslim Very good questions. I will have to get a grand am in here and do a video on those sash clips.
@Mr16430 They should connect to the lower part of the window with a special adhesive, and then bolt to the window regulator where the hole is in the tab.
Great video. It was very helpful to replace my 2004 Grand Am passenger regulator just by following these instructions. Thank you!
Binu E. Thanks for watching. We're glad the video could help you out

+Tyrone Coleman It's hard to make a diagnosis over the internet, but, if the motor runs, but the window doesn't move, that does sound like it could be a problem with the regulator.
Just replaced a regulator in a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am, this video was very helpful!
Thanks!
@pzcato Your Welcome! Please consider checking out our website next time you need parts.
Usually the cable will let go and break on them, causing the window to not go up or come down.
@nascardodgeram You probably need a new sash connector. You can find them on our website by searching or under the window regulator category.
@Mr16430 We do not carry the adhesive. You may want to visit our local auto body supply store, and they could help you out with the correct adhesive.
Normally when there is an issue with power it is related to a frayed wire possibly in the hinge of the door itself. 9 times out of 10, the issue is a wire related one and not a fuse holder one.
Thanks for this video. Gave me a rough understanding of what needs to happen to replace the window regulator/motor in my IS300.
You may want to check both the window and the regulator to see if it's binding on anything. Hope this helps you out.
We currently do not have an auto repair video that shows you how to replace them.
I put in a regulator last week and this was very helpful, thank you!
Thank you for order. Have a great day! 1aauto.com
Thanks for the great video. I am not very good at working on vehicles and with your help I replace the window sash connectors and got the door back together so it looks like new.
I just changed the regulator in my Alero, your video helped me, thanks!
Hey I just wanted to thank you for this video. Got a new regulator in my grand am and it works great. :)
Sorry for the confusion, but I was talking about the adhesive your referenced before. The link you provided was for the sash clips.
@bardaso It sounds like there may be something binding on the window regulator. It could possible also be a dry weatherstrip seal. You could try a little silicon spray on them if that's the case.
The concept is the same but the positioning of the screws and bolts that hold the panel on will be different between the two.
@MrSiko11208 I'd take the door panels off and investigate. Have there been any aftermarket items installed such as speakers or door locks??
It might not be servicable , but if it is tha dealer may be able to tell you if you can service it.
@mrsracandy the window should attach to the channel in the window regulator.
@heroes91092 You would need to rebolt it to the window regulator.
Thanks a lot for the great video! This was a ton of help! I will definitely be coming back to get my parts from you in the future. Thank you!
@djbigtrill The Grand Prix will be similar. Small differences in removing the door panel but beyond that they are the same.
@laptopcommando Yes this video will apply to your vehicle.
Thank you this video has happen me do it myself and it went out all great!
@ElisaDawn1989 Once you have unbolted the window from the reg you should be able to rotate the back of the window forward and to the outside of the car then pull the window up and out.
after watching this, it was easy... thanks!

goin' to the library to look at a chiltons manual. thanks for replying.
You do need to glue them to the window. You might be able to scrape them off.
Great video. If I ever order parts I will come to you guys!
good video, but when i checked my grand am i realized it was the white plastic window guide on the cable. i had already bought the sash from my dealer and it was 30$, luckily they had a return policy since i didn't open them. i'm gonna try to remove the regulator like in the video and add new guides to it. thanks for showing me how to take it off.

After replacing a cable driven regulator it is good practice to leave the door panel off of the door for easy access when you soon replace it again.
You would need all of the power components that Pontiac had included in the door for this option.
Awesome video! I used this to replace my regulator in my 1999 GT. One question... what would cause the switch to be reversed? I now have to pull the switch back to raise and push it up to lower!?? The connector only goes on one way.
The attach to the window with glue. We sell the replacement sash connectors online at 1aauto.com You can buy the glue at an auto body supply store.
There would more than likely be quite a bit of work involved with doing this.
@littlemanmays1187 We sell them on our website they are called sash connectors. They are under the window regulator category or you can just search 'grand am sash'
got ur fixed and looking good thaxs for the video....it helped alot
Excellent video, thank you!! Do you guys sale the regulator?
Would this be the same for the Bonneville? I searched Beneville on your channel and this is the video that was in the results. So I figured you put it in the tags for a reason.
Great video. May be ordering a regulator. Had a broken sash clip that I replaced 2 months ago... already broke again. Do you think this is a regulator issue where it is somehow tracking improperly and causing the clips to fail? Replacing the clips is a pain, so if I'm going to do it again, I may just do the regulator, too, if you think it will help.
@bossman519 Take a look at the cables to see if they are caught on something, preventing the window from moving down.
We currently do not sell the replacement bolts.
Excellent video on regulator......
@tallarico84 Sounds like you did not re-attach all the harnesses correctly. Take the panel back off and check all your harness connections.

@sritz1967 It sounds this the window has a great deal of resistance on it somewhere slowing it down.
Thanks for you vid..extacly what i needed saved my arse some money!
@GameTelescope You may want to take the door panels off and see if the window regulators are broke. We carry them on our website 1aauto.com
