  • I'm comfortably carrying about 30 pounds in my camp chuck box, an odd shape for a backpack, on the Roycraft frame. This three-stick external pack frame is a versatile tool for carrying light or heavy loads.
    I mentioned two lashing tutorials you may want to watch to lash the frame:
    Square Lashing ~ • Camp Craft: How to Tie...
    Tripod Lashing ~ • Tripod Lashing
    Here's the how-to on building this frame if you're interested in a blog format: survivalsherpa...
    Thanks for watching and the support of this channel and our blog!

    I suggest that you look at the Diamond O hitch for securing the load to the frame. Boy Scouts used it on pack frames that they built. It’s also used to secure loads on X frames on pack animals, packs to ladder-type pack frames, etc. A characteristic of it is that a pull on any part of it, is shared by the other parts of the hitch.

      Many thanks, Jack, for the suggestion. I'll have to incorporate that on my next frame.

    Hi Just came across your video which is exactly what I was looking for on how to load out a Roycroft Pack Frame. I completely agree with Alan Coutts comments and views I look forward to checking out the rest of the videos on your channel.

    Your presentation style is excellent, I wouldn’t change a thing. A lot of people who make these videos don’t seem to try the procedure beforehand and it shows. Yours has excellent flow, good sound, logical reasoning, and pertinent subject matter. Most importantly it’s a pleasure to watch. Thank you for your efforts to expand the Bushcraft world.

    Very nice job, Todd! I love your videos, but for some reason, I really loved this one! I don't think I have ever seen that frame done with toggles before, and I KNOW I've never seen the shoulder slats under the ropes... brilliant! God bless, brother!

      +Survival at Home Wow, thanks Patrick! The toggles are multipurpose items: tie outs for the frame, tarp system, and for pulling lashings tight... and many other uses. Appreciate your support and friendship, brother!

    you got my like and my subscription. Great video and for a bushcrafter starting out working on a budget, definitely an option when the cheap back pack fails. Keep it up!

    Very informative video. I wonder if small bungee cords might work in order to avoid all of that lashing and make your gear more easily accessible?

    • @SurvivalSherpa
      @SurvivalSherpa  9 років тому

      +Weekend Wanderer Thanks for watching WW. The 25 foot of cordage used to lash the pack to the frame doubles as a ridge line for my tarp/shelter system. I've seen some that have used bungees to hold the pack together though and it seemed to work fine. I think leaving the top flap unlashed would offer easy access to the contents as well. Good thoughts. Thanks for sharing!

    Is that the DIY bedsheet tarp (the yellow sheet) ??

  • @Kayakwinds
    @Kayakwinds 6 років тому

    This was all very informative. Thank you. How do you rate this setup? Would you ever make this a first choice pack frame or is just an emergency rig? Ropes are used instead of pack straps. How comfortable is that? As I recall this system was considered a viable way for helping downed pilots to make their way home. Obviously, in a natural disaster situation, it would also be good.

    • @SurvivalSherpa
      @SurvivalSherpa  6 років тому

      Tom Roycraft, Mors Kochanski's mentor, taught this pack to the Canadian air force as an emergency pack for downed pilots. It wouldn't be my first choice for packs but works well if needed. The slats between the rope and shoulder take the stress and distribute it over a larger area. This makes the pack much more functional even with rope. Many thanks for watching the thoughtful comment!

    is that the bed sheet tarp from your blog? how is it holding up?

    • @SurvivalSherpa
      @SurvivalSherpa  9 років тому

      +Christopher Daly It is. Not as durable as canvas but for what it is, a bed sheet, it holds up pretty good. I need to reinforce the tie outs. I've had two rip. Can't put as much pressure on the tarp as you would a canvas tarp. Also, high humidity makes it a bit tacky still. But it's still waterproof.

      I was wondering the same. Thanks for a very good video. The toggles really add to this set up.
      Thanks again.
