The Radeon VII is AMD's new contender in the high-end GPU space, and at $699 should be competitive with NVIDIA's RTX 2080. But is it?

Installing any AMD drivers on my r9 fury at the end of its life would make my pc crash. Without drivers it didn't crash but it still had freezes/black screens. Hearing this guy and Jayztwocents talk about experiencing crashes on this card makes me glad I didn't end up buying this, though 16 gb vram sounds nice. Would be annoying to upgrade to a new card only to experience the same problems. I now own the RTX 2080 and it runs good.

    • @jimmyrichards5595

The thing is, they shouldn’t have released the card without proper/stable driver support. I don’t think that Paul mentioned it but a few other YT reviewers are reporting not only some complete lock-ups while running a game, but the driver crashes while sitting idle, at the desktop, and the computer restarts, black screen lock-ups, and having to do a hard power restart, etc. These drivers w e r e n o t r e a d y... for release day. They should have been ready. If you just paid $700, that’s a very poor experience to have that can leave quite a bad taste in your mouth.
Btw, I’m an AMD GPU guy. I’ve been using them exclusively for over a decade. To me, this is not a good way(crap drivers) to come out of the gate with this new card. See the following movie -> “The Fith Element” where Mr. Zorg goes, “I’m.. very.. disappointed!”

But between the two desktop class components it is literally impossible for the 1050ti to beat the 580 unless you are undervolting the card, bottlenecking it somehow, or used integrated on your system through the cpu instead. userbench shows that the 580 wins across the board by 50% or more in everything. and every other benchmark agrees.

Luckily caught it early and undercloxked it to 950mV and now it runs at about 130 degrees farenheit with the fans aet to auto. Best part is that it did not compromise the performing still running all games in 4K ultra settings at 60 or more FPS.

The high-end graphics card market is terrible for consumers right now :( Nvidia are charging ridiculous prices but they can do this because the high-end competition from AMD is so poor. I think this card is perfect for apps like SideFX Houdini. Houdini now can run a great number of simulations on the gpu using OpenCL. And this Radeon VII gpu has tons of memory. 16GB/1TB/s! That's huge for simulations. In the other hand, when we talk about gpu rendering for houdini, we have only two options (Redshift and Octane), and both work only on nVidia cards. But, I can see the radeon VII card been used only on simulations. This is really fast 16GB memory and it is is worth each penny.

After testing and gaming on this card for over a year, I believe the maximum power of 300 W ultimately hurt the performance of this card. It needs more power. They didn't want to showcase a power-hog of a card especially next to the Vega 64, but the reality is that when you overclock and increase power by more than 20%, the card really starts to sail. Of course, you also need water cooling to really deal with the heat generation, but they didn't want to include a water block or AIO because the cost was already too high.

I don't understand why they made it so expensive putting that much vRAM in it. They could have just put 8-10GB and made the card more affordable. That would have made it really competitive against the 2080. Then still make a 12GB version for production. At this point there is zero reason to buy it for gaming.

best review comment >>>Very good article. The inescapable conclusion is that the VII fits in between the RX 2080 and 2070. But is that so bad? Does it justify granting the VII a 60% Rating?
I just bought a Radeon VII from amd.com for $699 with free shipping. It's still not available on Newegg.
Here's my thinking. The REAL cost of the Radeon VII is $550, because the included game bundle is worth at least $150, maybe much more. That puts it between the RX 2070 and RX 2080 if you add in their respective game bundles. Radeon VII performance also fits between the 2070 and 2080. The VII obliterates the 2070 for only $75 more. The VII's power draw is a bit more than the RX 2080 for slightly less performance, but costs at least $100 less. Ergo, it's a decent value.
My only concern is noise due to fan ramp up. As I mentioned in a previous post, the IGN review claimed they could use Wattman to lower the fan curve so it's not a problem - "One other thing to note - this GPU ships with a really aggressive fan curve, making it super loud when running at full load. Again, echoes of Vega once again. However, the good news is it's totally unnecessary as the card has a lot of headroom and the cooling seems over-engineered. The card never got higher than 66C with the default fan curve in the Radeon Wattman software. I lowered the curve to the point where I could barely hear the GPU at all, and even then it never got hotter than 70C. I have no idea why the default fan speed is so high, but it's not necessary."
I'm keeping my fingers crossed! If the fans are not tamable, then I'll just have to get a Morpheus or go with water. Sure, it will increase the cost, but the card still performs almost on par with the RX 2080, so who cares.
But here's the real lesson. When you buy computer equipment, you're really buying entertainment. The ability to overclock or play with cooling is a huge part of what you get. People will spend WAY more than they need for a Threadripper, play with aftermarket cooling, overclocking, mobos, etc... Admit it, people love their hobby computers.
The Radeon VII is a tinkerer's dream. Gamers Nexus pointed out that the Radeon VII is easy to open up, in contrast to the RX series which are really horrible to take apart.
It provides *almost* RX 2080 performance, which is totally sufficient for my gaming needs. Ray tracing has not matured yet, so it's not an issue. It's a damn good looking card. It's a super Bitcoin miner, should I want to try my hand at that. With the 16GB frame buffer and 1TB/s memory bandwidth it will let me play with various video editing and workstation programs. Just think of the many hours of fun I'll be getting. I can hardly wait.
And it allows me to support AMD, a tiny company that has valiantly faced down its two giant competitors, Intel and Nvidia.
My rating for the Radeon VII is 100%, (subject to future modification) hehehehehe

I use to be a poor teenage kid who barely afford pc gaming. I use to used ATI before they were bought by AMD. The reason being they use to be a real competitor with Nvidia. The only difference was their cards offer value for the money. I remember their cards had better smoother windows desktop performance than an equivalent nvidia gpu.
But after college when i now have a great job and making lots of money i went back to pc gaming and was utterly disappointed. Their drivers and software is what held it back. I could not get Crossfire to scale very well. My AMD cards over heated. I so many issues i gave up and went over to the dark side. And every single iteration of nvidia product i owned since was A+. A consumer should not have to self diagnose problems that a software update could have fixed. This is why AMD is where they are now. If it weren't for Console gaming they would be bankrupt by now.

The problem with Nvidia allowing access to use adaptive sync monitors is that they've said that they found loads of issues with a lot of monitors & out of 300 odd monitors tested they only think 5 are working as they should, Then they say they won't tell us which monitors they class as not working properly & then they follow up with a "but you can buy one of our gpu's & try your monitor yourself", It's like they think we're stupid, I'm not willing to buy an Nvidia GPU on the off chance it might work with my adaptive sync monitor, I know it works with my AMD graphics card so I'll have to stick with what I know. Nvidia opening the floodgates for adaptive sync monitor owners was no more than a publicity stunt to try and improve Turing sales, They clearly don't want to put any work into it to get the number that can be rated as G-sync compatible up which means I won't be going with Nvidia just yet.

If you put the same sensor in any other cards, it would read out much higher temps than what we currently see. Most GPU thermal diode temps are measured off of the edge of the chip, while this is buried deep in the middle of the core.
