in 1974 I was 16, My mates dad had just bought a Triumph Trident, the one with the square tank. We were waiting outside school for him and he was going to give us both a ride. He turned up and I went round the block on the back, up the A127 motorway for a couple of miles and back to school. I then gave my mate his lid back and they went home together. I walked about 10 yards towards home when a bike stopped outside the sweet shop and the bloke went in to get some snouts. He was riding a Z1. My god it was like I had just stepped into the future, especially after the grumbly, rumbly triumph. This was all rounded lines and chrome. I was just standing by the bike staring at it. The bloke came out the shop with his ciggies and just smiled. Whadya think of it. Oh mate its beautiful. Wanna sit on it? I sat on it and he started it up and I sat like a twat gently twisting the throttle. He then gave it a proper rip on the throttle. Was totally hooked on biking from that moment. Ran home and asked my mum if I could get a provisional licence and a Yamaha FS1E. Hooked. Thanks Kawasaki. Now I am like 300 yo and riding a 790 KTM and thinking about upgrading to the Ninja 1000sx. What comes around.

I agree with you about the engine's architecture. A triple sounds and feels different. But in terms of identity, the 900 RS kills it. I got my motorbike driver's license in 1973; the Z1 was the bike to have at the time. The Yamaha was not even on the map yet.
As far as looks are concerned, the dual analogical gauges of the RS is more reminiscent of the Z1.

I've been riding since the 1970s, so I was around when the bikes these two are supposed to pay homage to were new and mainstream. To my eyes, Kawasaki nailed it with the RS, but I just don't see the 'retro' in the Yamaha. The analog gauges on the Kawi does it for me and a bargain compared to another nice retro, the CB1100. And they've retained the classic Z1 look up to the pseudo cylinder cooling fins. You could argue that there are several bikes out there today that look more stunning than the Z1 and I couldn't argue with that. But the Z900 is like the prettiest girl without makeup or fancy clothes.

I would get the Z900RS. I had the original 73 Z1 back in 1973, and later the original Ninja 84 903 in 1984. Loved both and survived them. Went 135 on the Z1 and almost 150 on the Ninja back when I was young and fearless. Now have an XV-1100 Yamaha Virago. Love the slower speeds and low end torque. @@Kwackajack 75 RD-350, highly modified to cafe bike over a period of about 2 years. It was a rocket and handled like it was on tracks. :-) Many, many smiles on that bike!! I am lucky to have escaped with my life during those days when speed did not concern me as much as it does these days. That RD was almost as fast as my Z1. The TZ twin disc front end was so strong! It had a TZ road race crankshaft, so RPM limit was 13,500. Stock was about 8,500-9,000. Power came on at 6K, go to 12K, then hold on as you snicked it into the next higher gear. Whee ha! Luckily, I lived in San Diego county and Don Vesco Yamaha was near. He did some porting and polishing, and shaved the heads. Then I up sized the carbs from 28mm to 36mm, special reed valve mods, and expansion pipes from the TZ and the package was complete. Stock HP was listed at 40, bike now had about 52-54 or so. Up 20+% is substantial, especially when the bike actually had an overall weight loss. Had a Vesco seat/tail section on it that kept one firmly planted in the saddle. Had a cafe windscreen and clip ons from Ceriani (sp?). Hands down the most fun bike I ever owned. Other bikes I enjoyed; several 650 Triumphs, a 75 750 Trident, 73 850 Norton, several RD400's, and several Yamaha Viragos. Been down twice, both under 20 MPH with minor scrapes. Dirt/sand in a street corner! Ride safe and keep the rubber down.

I knew I wanted the cafe from the moment I saw it online and when I sat on it at the dealership, I knew it was to be a great long love affair. 12k miles (so far) of San Francisco daily commutes, Hwy 1 blasts, road trips to the canyons of Malibu, and now tearing up the backroads of Portland, she can handle it all with style to spare. If you get one, I highly recommend doing the Akrapovic headers and ECU flash, as well as the sprint air filter with velocity stacks. You’ll turn her into a lighter faster screamer. As far as suspension goes, I had mine setup properly by a race tech and it made a huge difference. Eventually I’ll upgrade the forks and rear shock, but for now it’s perfect for the streets.

I bought the Z900RS because it looks stunning and am not even slightly disappointed - it’s wonderful. I got an early US version that needed a Power Commander to make the throttle response civilized (newer ones do not need this) and it came with an Akrapovic slip on as a special offer. A tail tidy later, and a large addition of some rear preload on that very plush from delivery rear shock and it’s pretty much a perfect bike.
The sound they tuned really works at full wail past 6000 rpm to the redline - instantly illegal speeds. It sounds amazing! The can doesn’t really change it much as it has a cat anyway.

Yamaha has a great set of parts that can go along with the bike and you can turn it into a scrambler or a cafe racer style with some of that options. It means that you can have a different bike if you get bored with the original outfit. You still can do all that, with no need to get parts in the after market. It is a plus for Yamaha that, I think Kawasaki doesn’t level that offer.

I've got a brand new XSR 900 in 80's black in my garage. Reminds me on the RD250LC in my youth. The XSR has some mods such as a quick-shifter, an Akrapovic full exhaust, Ohlins-suspension front and rear, heating grips, a small windshield, LED-turning signals, brake and clutch levers from Gilles, and a deeper handlebar. But to be honest I've got to change the handlebars because it's uncomfortable at the age of 54! ;)
Bike is awesome especially the Ohlins-suspension and the sound of the Akrapovic! The better MT09 in my view and I know this because my last bike was a MT09...

Z 900 RS and the SE model at that, is the one Id buy and no doubt. Those looks are pure love for this 50 something rider. In a retro UJM it has to have a 4 cyl, I'll pass on the triple for this retro cafe style Japanese bike.

I'm into the cafe racer style so a few mods and it looks just like one but with reliability and power! Front wheel loves to leave the pavement on just half a throttle.
Now for the Kawasaki, it's geared towards and older audience, I rode it and it's not like a hooligan bike like my XSR900. But you can feel the torque and it doesn't have the twitchy throttle like the XSR900. But it also does it for me. If you're on 2 wheels who's to say that you wouldn't enjoy either bike! I think the spec sheet comparison on this isn't the greatest unless you are looking at dyno is really not the way to go. Yes, the Z900 drops more torque, but it also weighs an extra 40 pounds. The Indian FTR1200 looked like it was going to have more pull than the XSR for the same reason, and it often gets left in the dust. The Z900 exhaust options are also poor at best. With a dyno and flash on the XSR you're getting at least 15 additional horsepower on top of a barely 430 pound wet weight. That's absolutely ridiculous and it often leaves even its larger competitors in the dust. It is a big reason why the XSR was the overall favorite and high scorer in the FTR, Monster 12, XSR shootout.
Aside from all of the objective reasoning, I actually test rode them both and the Kawi quad feels like it takes forever to get going and it is a bit more to lug on the twistys. It rides a lot like a new CB1000 (major dad bike), and that makes it feel just not worth it to me. Honestly, if I wanted retro styling and some excellent torque I would sacrifice .4 seconds and get a Thruxton R or RS over the Kawi anyway.
Last note, I did go home with the XSR and am 100% bias.
