- The excellent Giuseppe Scandola is Amonasro, Maria Chiara is Aida.
This is one of the best recordings of the act III scene. Scandola is in fantastic voice and belongs to the great Amonasros of the last century. It is funny how great voices like this are not famous while Milnes or Warren are known by everybody. Scandola - the great Italian school - a real Verdi baritone.
meravigliosi entrambi .
When I was a child (8-9 year old), in a remote small town in the Alps of the Veneto region, I had a school teacher who taught us pieces of opera, one of which was ‘Va Pensiero’, Nabucco, Giuseppe Verdi: he was Giuseppe Scandola. Pity that even in Italy now arts and music are so much neglected, everything revolving around business.
Grazie
In my previous post I forgot to say thanks so much for this homage to my dear great school teacher in my mountains home town in Italy: it brings back so many memories... Giuseppe Scandola was not only a great opera singer, but a great person too, making us children love music because of his human approach to teaching and his contagious passion.
IMMENSO!!!
My beloved primary school teacher in Italy: Giuseppe Scandola. He was a great teacher! He thought us children Va Pensiero, from Nabucco, and I still remember it.
Enrico Maria Marabelli he is. Amonasro!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh my God, this is the best Verdi baritone i have ever heard! I stumbled across the VHS in a library today. Pity there aren't more recordings of him.
Amazing singing! This is real opera!
Grandi
Phenomenal Baritone 🏆🌟
TREMENDO!!!! SIN PALABRAS!!!! Gracias por compartirlo!!!
Esplêndido.
Only just found this singer, what a surprise and a fantastic voice for Verdi. Thanks for posting, one learns something new every day.
It's one the best Nile's scenes who I have seen.Maria Chiara has the possesion of a phenomenal dramtic voice, and Scandola, well,to add something over his Amonasro it's only redundant.
5:00 what a voice
TREMENDOUS! I was just browsing around youtube and thought, I haven't heard the Nile Scene from Aida for a long time and ...Chiara...WOW, what drama and passion and a voice to match. Where have you been all my life? And Scandola, a real baritone with real dramatic presence. BRAVI! to the tenth power!
How sad that this is the only video of Scandola on YT, but I am most grateful. Thanks
It's the best considering all the versions than I've listen of this "Nile scee"Aida whit her father,Wonder, the perfect clearly voices and register are a wonderful exposition.
Great cast! Wow
This rarity is certainly another sign of the decline of opera singing over the past couple of decades. Dramatic in the true sense, no scooping up to the note, no excessive vibrato. Both are excellent. Having said that however, it doesn’t quite reach the sublime musicality for instance of Price and Merrill on their early 60’s recording, their singing on that occasion is simply beyond glorious.
@XP11XP A fat record contract with either DECCA or DGG I guess. Then he might have had a career like Cappuccilli who (let's be honest) did not have half the voice of Scandola.
I did not know Scandola, but he is an authentic baritone with a very natural, non-artificial voice ... like that of many of his best-known colleagues. Ms. Chiara was a great Aida.
What a wonderfull presentation! Greetings from Brasil! :D
I was thumb up 100.
5:01 :O
Undoubtable, the Amonasro's Guelfi is the best.
Amonastro - Titta Ruffo,Danise,Tibbett,Reali,Bastianini,De Falchi,Taddei, Petroff,Popov etc. etc. etc....
Wonderful voice from Scandola but people seem to think 'the louder the better' as though that's all that matters. Sure he is louder than Cappuccilli, Taddei, Gobbi. He has little of their artistry.
Steve Bell he is great in his own right!!what a baritono!!!!!!!!!
Steve Bell in opera voice comes first. Having voice is artistry in opera. It is like vocal olympics after all. The most developed powerful voices are most able to impart the dramatic impact of the music
He is not louder than Cappuccilli!!!!

Strepitoso Scandala! Maria Chiara è forse l'ultimo grande soprano nel classico stile italiano?
