Garmin Venu Sq 2 In-Depth Review: Double The Specs?!?

- Here's everything you need to know about the Garmin Venu Sq 2 (or, Garmin Venu 2 Sq), from what's changed compared to the existing Garmin Venu Sq as well as how it compares to the Garmin Venu 2/2 Plus watches.
Venu Sq 2 on Amazon: amzn.to/3B4ykTv (link helps the channel, thanks!!!)
The Garmin Venu 2 Sq is essentially a hardware and software upgrade to very similar internals (and externals) as the Garmin Venu 2 series. Meaning that the original Venu Sq had fairly different internals to the circle-shaped Venu series. Whereas with the Venu 2 Sq, they basically just made a rectangular Venu 2, and the software also contains almost all the same features as the newer Venu 2 units.
However, there are some areas where the Venu 2 Sq lacks hardware of the Venu 2 series, and a few tiny areas where it’s better. First up though, let’s talk about what’s new/different compared to the original Venu Sq.

Always so good when you give us all this info. Been using your reviews to make my purchasing decisions for close to a decade now! Thank you ☺️
Amazing video!!! Also as a business guy, you slipping in that “like this video” after going a little bit in depth of the watch instead of saying it right away made me more apt to like the video, good stuff.
Smashing it out the park as always Ray! 🌟
Hi DC, I very much appreciate your take on these devices. My special interest is pool swimming. As a newbie to Garmin and considering a Venu Sq 2 or Venu 2 I'm looking for information about data display on my wrist as I swim. I want to see how far I've gone (lengths or distance) as I go - we all lose count at some stage. I also want to actually see the numbers, as I progress to the age of living legend my eyesight is not getting better (I'm 78 & completing 3000 metres a day) Your advice would be much appreciated. Cheers
Am I the only person who finds the plethora of Garmin watches and categories as confusing as heck? Currently happy with my Vivoactive 3 until it dies, which may take a while. It has proven to be a very durable product that is good enough for my needs.
Yup, totally confusing. Functional, but confusing.
It’s not just you chief- there’s so many of them- if i even wanted to buy one today- the decision will be so impossible I’d just opt for someone else - the price ranges are even so close together so that doesn’t even help make the decision any easier
@@tolulopeobe I always start with price and go down from there. 😉 Joking aside, I really begin with what I'm willing and can spend, an unsympathetic assessment of my abilities and activities I would use it for, how committed I am to the Garmin ecosystem/integrations, and functionality I NEED. I also harken back to my old, long gone Timex Ironman dumb watches to keep the WANTS in check. 🫡
I’ll hang on to my vivoactive 3 until it dies. It’s great!
I find it not too bad until you start throwing in the more obscure models, like the Marc and Lily 🤷🏼♂️
It'd be cool to see a side-by-side of the SQ and SQ2 with like a full-screen light-coloured watch face, so that we can really see how far the bezels were pushed back. I couldn't deal with the bezels on the original SQ, but this seems to be much better.
I am indeed finding this review useful and helpful. I will hit that like button. 👍
After watching 4-5 reviews of Venu 2 SQ watch over youtube I can say that this is the best and most detailed review of the watch. The HR and GPS comparison was super amazing. Thanks for that. Just ordered the watch after watching your review.
Does the watch record fake steps? like adding steps when riding a car?
@@jacobreubenaglipa5669 No, it doesn't. In fact it detects the driving activity and shows in HR and Steps graphs on the app.
@jacobreubenaglipa5669 it absolutely does. I have this watch and it's the only thing I don't like about it. I sit at a pad printing machine all day and already today after sitting for 5 hours I have 4761 steps 😂. My coworker has a Samsung watch and it doesn't do that but Samsung is crap as a fitness watch. It's great as a smart watch but that doesn't help me. GPS is crap also on Samsung.
@@paulkline3011 too bad, steps is a big deal for me because I do walking exercise so I need accurate step count.
Hey Ray, i just got all those great upgrades on my Fenix7. So glad they aren't in beta anymore.
Been using my Tactix Delta for years now. Thinking about picking this up for sleeping and PT. I'll still use my Fenix 6s for running though.
Great review! I'm still thinking to go for this or venu 2, but either one I will miss the morning report on forerunner.
I thought that they added that, no?
I agree with you any fitness tracker / watch should count floors climbed. But you are wrong saying even the cheap Fitbit models count floors climbed. None of the Fitbit bands charge5, luxe , inspire etc count floors climbed no more.
You already made a review. Quite impressing.
Fantastic job with the in depth review! Could you please help me decide - I want to get a fitness watch and so far I am homing on to the Garmin Venu Sq 2. Would you recommend any other alternative in the same price range? Thanks a ton
This was a great review, thank you! Better by far than anything else out there. One thing I can't find anywhere online is, can I add rock climbing (indoor and/or outdoor) activity to the Garmin Venu Sq 2? (I like the square screen and don't care for the round watches.) You also mention you can find altitude in the app, but not on the watch. Is that right? So there is no hike option on this watch? My main activities are running, hiking, SUP, and rock climbing and I'm hoping to replace my Fitbit with this Garmin Venu Sq2. Thanks!
It's nice to see Garmin watches looking nice these days!
How is the venue sq 2 with swimming laps in a pool? I previously had a samsung galaxy one which wasn't great, and got water damage. Thanks
@10:14 you show the Garmin connect screen of a connected phone. That is only place to see Elevation changes from hiking and biking? You'd mentioned that there is no Hiking "app" within the sports available on the phone. So if I choose "walking" as my sport and go for a hike, I can still see captured ascent and descent data via the connect app? While not ideal, at least it can still be accessed. Great vid!
Can't wait for the Hero 11 review! Hope it doesn't get as hot as the Hero 10 because it's barely unusable :(
Please could you do an in-depth review of the Amazfit T-Rex 2?
I have the problem with the Garmin Venu SQ 2 Music that when I listen to music with headphones, the connection sometimes gets bad?
Awesome review as always. I am buying new watch for my gf. She has Fitbit Versa 3 and she is not satisfied with heart rate tracking. From Garmin Venu 2s , Vivoactive 4/4s , Venu SQ 2 , which is better ? Which do you recommend me to buy for her ? thanks
I love my Sq but the only thing that bugs me is the lack of training effect that my Edge 530 has.
I just saw that I can't load gpx to the Venu sq 2 😕 is there a possibility that can change?
Does this watch auto-start runs, strength workouts, etc like some Garmin watches do?
I had this watch for a day, but found that the interface and options are soooo laggy! It just feels super slow and the step count comes later then the actual steps. So I had to return it. The fitbit interface works way better for me!
@DC Rainmaker
which watch has the more accurate gps better the forerunner 245 or the venu sq2?
I'm really just about an exact recording and an exact pace indication
does the garmin venu sq 2 have the widgets: stopwatch, timer, flashlight, airplane mode and find my phone?
And I have one more question: I have a garmin forrrunner 245 music, would it be worth changing to a garmin venu sq 2 music? would it change much?
*Can someone help, my Venu2 SQ battery lasts less than two days, and I am not using GPS, Buletooth, phone...just tracking Sleep, Stress, Body Battery, Ox, Pulse. How do I set >>Smartwatch mode with activity tracking and 24/7 wrist-based heart rate monitoring>> in which the battery is said to lasts 11 days?*
I prefer the square look. I wish it would do the voice to text feature.
What's the "Health Snapshot" activity type?
I have a Galaxy right now. Only I'm not impressed with the charge. 1 to 1½days if I'm lucky. But I have always like the square screen. I had one with another brand I had. It's comfortable.
Hi, its Pablo from Spain! the alerts could be with the earphones? i mean when i take 1 km for example, the FC.. etc or just vibration alerts? and can u answer whatsaps with iphone? Thanks so much 😊
Love all your reviews. I'd also love to see a video about your journey as a fitness athlete/UA-camr and how you ended up in Europe. Which, by the way, has provided some spectacular venues.
YES!! We need the Rainmaker documentary. How Ray Made it Rain.
That would be an awesome topic 👍
Yes I agree or an AMA
Hey mate Confused between Venu Sq 2 and Instinct 2 S. Which one should i go for?
I'm new to fitness tracking
Just got this watch yesterday
My daily sport is badminton
What feature should I use in this watch?😅
Is there any smart-sport watch that can track in a swim spa?
according to the manual you can store mp3 files on it without deezer or spotify.
Damn, so many series refreshes from Garmin but no Vivoactive 5.. I honestly think of switching to this one from the Vivo 4 but I just like the display on the current one, I just need better battery life. Hopefully I won't have to wait long.
Exactly. Also waiting on the VA5 here. Don't really need the oled screen, and am fine with the screen that the VA4 uses, as it uses waaay less energy, and thus I can use it in always on mode and still get close to a weeks worth of battery life.
Looking to see if I can look at the map/ navigation on this watch
Is YT music also available on the watch?
Would y’all recommended the Vivoactive 4 or the Venu sq 2?
Is there any comparison for Venu SQ 2 Vs Forerunner 255?
Do you have the review for swimming on this garmin venu 2?
Does this work with a external Heartrate monitor strap?
can you modify the rest screen on swim
Does it record false steps? like when riding a car.
so wonderful beautiful video friend i love it nice watch
does it notify you of text and phone calls?
Sorry if this has been asked but can you put maps on it?
I'd love to see a comparison between this and the Apple Watch 8, coming out next week...
Seems like a good topic for another (very soon) week...
I enjoyed this review. It's an item that I could actually afford to have. In fact I had Garmins page opened and was going to buy one until you said there is no altimiter. Even my Vivoactive 3 I have on now has that.
I'm wearing a Vivoactive 3 music and was similarly surprised to hear that this new watch skipped the altimeter, odd choice.
Agreed, I find this confusing. As someone who rides mtb, I enjoy having my elevation gain set as a data field while I'm riding. I was seriously considering this watch until I heard this. Guess I'll be keeping my vivoactive 4.
@@Zebron5000 Yeh, so far as for what I do I have not heard of a better watch than my Vivoactive 4. I used the 3 for a long time but really wanted Body Battery so I got the 4 and love it.
how it's compare to Forerunner 55?
Garmin Venu sq 2 vs Fitbit Sense 2?
If one of you guys has this watch, please let me know if:
Can all of the health/fitness functions be turned off or do they run automatically?! I have absolutely no desire to use any of that stuff.
Does the watch have a stopwatch and if so what is the longest amount of time it can count to?
I'm in search of a smartwatch that can count up to several hours.
Thanks 🙂
Can you still control your music on the non music edition if you have your phone with you?
Probably
how is the GPS connection on the Venu SQ2?
currently I'm using a Garmin VivoSmart Hr+ and time to time when I go for a run I have to wait over 5min to have connectivity.
in some rare cases been waiting nearly 15min, which does become frustrating specially when is cold weather
It's good, usually takes 2-4 seconds to get signal. Quick and easy. Cheers!
Is the text any larger then on the original Venu SQ. I have both the round Venu and SQ and the text is SO tiny on the original SQ.
It’s bigger in some areas, but that’s mostly due to the UI being redesigned a bit. Other areas it’s the same.
There is some more exciting news. Apparently there is a garmin 265. A 255 with amoled screen. Now that’s exciting.
but can you put mp3 music from your pc into the watch and create a custom playlist, withour using any music streaming services?
Yup!
Thanks for the review. Question is about the vibration. I assume it can give vibration notifications. Is it strong?
Yes, it's actually double the strength of the Venu Sq 1 (which, I apparently forgot to mention, doh!).
@@Dcrainmaker thanks! I was looking for a replacement for my big and heavy Fenix 5X. Was looking at a Venu 2 Plus, but was put off by the price. This looks like a viable option
@@Dcrainmaker Good to hear that. The sq1 vibration motor is very weak.
@@p_t02 Agreed! I often miss notifications on my SQ1 during intervals, unless I tighten the strap so much it cuts off circulation to my hand
Can somebody tell me whether I can download music via spotify on this watch if I just buy the standard Venu sq 2?
If you buy the 'Music' edition, then yes, it'll allow for Spotify offline downloads.
Looks like I'll have to keep holding on to my 945 LTE. I need the peace of mind that someone can track me while I'm out running just in case of anything
I still don't understand why the sleep score is not available for the SQ 1. When I got this watch I was completely puzzled of why such a simple feature that is visible in the app anyway is not available on the watch itself. A crazy simple moon icon and "7h26m" would be perfectly enough. I assume this is a software thing, a complete bs move from Garmin. I remember it was available in the widgets back in the day, just not working. Then they removed it with a firmware upgrade completely.
so there is no sleep widget on the venu Sq? ??
@@smiletinytina On the SQ (1), no.
How hard or annoying would it be to switch GPS on and off? I only need it for running but want the battery life outside of that
You only use GPS during a run, otherwise, it's off.
Garmin's excuse of more activities being because of the gen 4 sensor is absolutely false as the fenix 6 /forerunner 945 has an older sensor yet has the HIIT activity. Call it what it is - feature creep and product segmentation, those with the lesser products are made to want to upgrade more.
Would be cool to know if it could handle outdoor swimming with the upgraded GPS chip?
It can technically handle it, but Garmin just doesn't enable it. It's the same chipset as used on other watches.
What about powermeters? Square as Venu 2 also not support powermeters on bikes?
Same unfortunately.
Just use a cycling computer for power meter
Can the SQ2 or Venu 2 plus pair with external HR straps and cycling power meters, ie. Rally Pedals?
External HR yes, power meters no.
So I bought this watch last week on Amazon and now 1 week later the price has dropped $50. Music edition is now $249.99 and non music $199.99. It looks like some other garmin watches also dropped $50. I wonder if I should return my watch and rebuy it at the lower price? Or would Amazon refund me the $50? Does anybody know?
Update. I reached out to Amazon and to my surprise refunded us $105 because I had bought 2 of these. 1 for me and 1 for my wife. 🥳
What watch is in your hand?
Samsung Watch5 Pro
Why are these watches still missing the morning report
I agree!
Bro, is there any review for comparison.
Venu SQ2 Vs Forerunner 255s
Stuck between choosing this or a Venu 2/2s.
Same!
@@agnieszkagalazka7130 went for Venu 2s and its a brilliant watch
Did you forget to add the chapters? 🙂
Hmm...that'd be a valid observation. Coming up!
The scrolling on it seems a little laggy. Bit disappointing
These smart watches are getting expensive. I'm not keen paying alot if they break after 1-2 years e.g. Fitbit.
I currently have a Garmin Venu 2 and have owned 3 previous Garmin watches with floor counting. Every one of these watches has been a dumpster fire when counting floors. Not having floor counting may actually be a feature.
I also had a Fitbit Charge 5 for a while. It did not have floor counting.
yeah it's pretty terrible
It is also fun to get the step achievement during a bike ride. Shows you how well they know what you are doing.
How's your experience with the watch so far?
ECG would require metallic pads to conduct the electrical signal. I doesn't look like the watch has them.
The watch has a metallic bezel…
Fitbit has passive ecg , don’t need metallic pads . Garmin could also do that .
@@grecuccionicola That's not ECG, it's irregular heartbeat detection. The watches with true ECG have metallic conductive pads under and on the sides. You need two sets of them to measure the electrical signal across the body.
@@VietnamEli I know , but Fitbit has an algorithm, to do that with ppg , heart on the puls , it’s about 80% accurate says Fitbit, and fda approved.
@@grecuccionicola That's really neat, but that's still not an ECG
@dcrainmaker do you recommend the HR monitor on these devices as a complete replacement for a chest strap while riding (both on trainer and outdoors)? Thanks.
It really depends on the sport/season. For outdoor riding, I tend to find optical HR sensors on the wrist struggle. But I've had pretty good luck running. Indoors, optical HR usually does very well on a trainer.
@@Dcrainmaker Thats good advice. Thanks very much. Love your channel mate.
This could have been so much more , beef up the exterior, stronger case , sapphire and better water resistance and you have an apple ultra killer 🤷🏻♂️ I’d pay more .
And it really should have an altimeter!
It wouldn’t hurt for them to add triathlon across the range…
Agree. I'd argue Apple will kinda force there hand here, given it's a mere 2 weeks away from rolling out to all recent Apple Watches.
Too expensive I believe. Garmin shouldn't have raised the price. When it drops to 150 it will be ok. I wonder if they upgraded the CPU. The original is pretty laggy.
Why does the screen have those markets around the edges? Ruins the appearance.
Do these watches look high quality or look plasticity and cheap?
I think the white and light color variants look cheap and plasticy but the darker colors look nice
Help From Indonesia, it is good for bike, tks
I've been using a Vivoactive HR since 2018 but the battery just isn't lasting as long nowadays. I hate circular watches though, which makes this pretty much the only Garmin option. Lack of an altimeter for elevation is honestly a deal-breaker though. Shame.
The only reason I watched this video was to hear about massage alerts and responding to them . And you never said anything about them 😥.
Why can't anyone make a smartwatch that isn't a fitness tracker? Why can't I just have a digital watch, that lets me load apps, and have custom watch faces, without having to have a huge HR monitor bump, and tons of permanent features that I don't need?
I seriously just want a 1week battery, with custom watch faces, and Spotify remote control. I don't need to load songs on my watch, I just want to control Spotify from my wrist.
The HR sensor isn’t that big of battery draw, custom watch faces and 3rd party apps are.
@@Dcrainmaker It's not a large battery draw, but it wastes space inside the chassis, that could allow for larger battery, or make the watch thinner and lighter weight.
If you had an e-ink display, you could have custom B&W watch faces that don't consume any more power that default ones, and you'd have a week-long battery, easily.
Who in 2023 does not take their phones with them on training sessions ?
Comparing apples and pears but they are probably oranges
When I see a person with a squared smartwatch which isn’t Apple, first thought is: He likes Apple watch but he can’t afford it. I know that it 90% of cases it’s not like that but still, I hate that many manufacturers are copying Apple design.
Fun fact: Garmin had square watches years before Apple did, in fact, almost all Garmin watches were square for some time. Even the original Vivoactive was announced 5 months before Apple shipped their first watch: www.dcrainmaker.com/2015/04/garmin-vivoactive-in-depth-review.html
@@Dcrainmaker Hmm, interesting. I didn’t know that, to be honest. 🙂
@@Nogitsune_Yako now you can hate apple for copying garmin 😜
Casio did square watches long before Apple. Apple isn't something everybody strives to have.
it stutter a lot
Looks like Apple Watch
Looks a lot like the Apple watch doesn’t it.
Not everything that looks square is a apple watch
@@Joshpods oh you’re right. Thanks for clarifying. Didn’t realise I suggested it WAS the Apple watch. Anti Apple tools….🙄
Actually Apple looks like a Garmin. Garmin had square watches before Apple.
