  • Hobby Wireless sent in a sample of the new 3.3GHz FPV system for me to review and here's a first look at what you get - and an overview of why 3.3GHz might be a good alternative to 5.8GHz or 1.2GHz for many applications.

    Hi Bruce - GREETINGS FROM NEW YORK CITY!!! First off, I'm relatively new to the sport and I have to thank you so much. I started flying about 7 months ago and you and your channel have been the best overall resource in my education thus far. I've found specific information I've been in search of, and learned about things I didn't even know existed. So THANK YOU! And yes, I would definitely love to learn about HAM as well.

    Hi Bruce. I think it's important to stress that in the UK holding an amateur radio license does not automatically mean you can use this equipment. The UK Amateur Radio Licence does not permit broadcasts from airborne platforms within the amateur allocations other than frequencies assigned to the licence exempt Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) and Short Range Device (SRD) allocations exclusively for such purposes. Also in the UK the 3.3GHz amateur allocation is assigned on a secondary user basis with the Ministry of Defence being the Primary user. Other proposed uses of the 2.9GHz to 4GHz spectrum are dealt on a case by case basis under the sole authority of OFCOM, our equivalent of the FCC. It has been rumoured that OFCOM are now beginning to take an interest in 5.8GHz in relation to the use of excessive power, the maximum input at the antenna is 25mW in the UK. I really wish it was different.
    Regards
    Nidge

    • @eatmykwad
      @eatmykwad 8 років тому +2

      +sputniksam the reality is that pretty much nobody takes a blind bit of notice of these regulations. Something will have to give one way or another and soon !

    • @ycopter
      @ycopter 8 років тому

      +sputniksam Nidge, a very informative and useful post. In fact the 25mw limit is EIRP and therefore a 5.8Ghz transmitter with 25mw output power is not technically legal either. Given the typical gain of an omni-directional antenna the actual output power at the antenna would have to be limited to around 12mw to remain legal. I think that OFCOM will need to re-consider the use of the 5.8Ghz band in relation to FPV flying to ensure their rules remain practical and sensible given the growth in FPV flying and racing.

      @GoogleyGaz 8 років тому

      +sputniksam How long does the amateur license last for? i did mine years ago through air cadets, would be good to know if its still active

    • @ycopter
      @ycopter 8 років тому

      +MegaSexwax It last for life providing you keep your details up to date with Ofcom. Take a look at Ofcom Online Licensing Services.

    • @xjet
      @xjet 8 років тому +1

      +sputniksam Yep... this will vary country-by-country so people need to check their local regs in respect to whether it's legal to use this (or any) non-ISM system even with a ham license.

  • @RobB_VK6ES

    Before you all go yes please for videos on getting an amateur radio licence, watching a few videos from Bruce will not you get past the exams. There is quite some detailed learning to undertake. Like radio and electronics theory as well as regulations. The requirements and level of detail will vary from country to country too. Getting an amateur radio licence is not a passport to RC Nirvana. Getting an amateur licence will bring further responsibility and culpability for your actions.
    You could liken the amateur licence to a driving license in that it is the person who is licenced after proving their competency as opposed to registering the car which merely confirms the suitability of the car for on road use taxes and insurance aside.

    • @xjet
      @xjet 8 років тому +1

      +Rob B Yes there is some locale-specific information that needs to be learned but the ham ticket isn't nearly as onerous as it once was. I recall that proficiency in morse code used to be a criteria but fortunately that's no longer the case.
      Basic RF theory gets you a fair way down the path to your ticket and the rest is pretty much some rote-learning.

    • @SteevyTable
      @SteevyTable 8 років тому

      +Rob B HAM licences are not that hard to get. I got mine last year with just kind of brushing through practice exams some.
      Hell, I was 2 questions away from the general licence, and I just decided to take that one on a whim the same day I took the technician exam.

    • @RobB_VK6ES
      @RobB_VK6ES 8 років тому

      +SteevyTable It all depends on the base level and understanding of the individual. Honestly can you see someone that needs their hand held building a quad is going to even stand a chance? I think not.
      I would suggest you have actually acquired a great deal of expertise along the way rather than in actually applying yourself to the task immediately prior to getting a ticket. Congrats on the success BTW.

    Just checked the HAM frequency tables for Austria, Germany and Switzerland. In none of this countries 3.3GHz is a HAM band. So there's a good chance that this is also the case in most other countries of the European union. A HAM license would be cool anyway because it allows you to use higher wattage 2.4GHz gear legally.

    In the USA, you need a Ham ticket for any radio signal that is in the HAM bands without an FCC ID number. So 5.8GHz needs a ticket too even at 25mw, technically.
