When Resizing A Ring, How Big Is One Size?

At our recent Q&A here on UA-cam, Andrew was asked is there was a formila for working out how much to cut out of a ring to make it smaller.

I tend to over think these things a bit and wonder how the “stretch out” of the outside of the ring compares to the straight line from point to point which doesn’t follow the extra distance of the outside of the ring due to the curve. I know it’s a small amount on a half or single size but think that the more sizes either removed or added it would be off even more.
Also on a thick ring bottom shouldn’t we measure or score the ring on the i side as this is where the size really matters.

Yes you are over thinking it. Just cut from the outside towards the centre of the ring for each cut and you will be spot on. I could spend 10 minutes showing you but I’ve already done films on that. Others can waffle on for ages using a bit of trial and error taking twice as long as I take. I know which methods I’d rather
