- So what do you use to measure when you are making jewellery?
This is a film topic suggested by a subscriber to Andrew's At The Bench UA-cam channel for him to show and demonstrate whilst in lockdown.
Please reach out to him by what ever means you can and ask him some questions that he can make films about. It may be something simple or just a thought but please reach out to him so he can make some content for us all to keep us entertained over the next few months.

Thank goodness for your videos, Day 50 in Paris.
Andrew, I can't thank you enough for your wonderful and thorough videos. You are amazing. I'm a hobbyist and have learned a great deal from you. You've made this hobby enjoyable. Thank You and best wishes to you
Andrew, Andrew, that is a caliper, not a slide rule. A slide rule is a logarithmic device, we used before the electronic calculstors came to.
Yup. I use similar measuring tools. I also use a depth gauge, protractor, callipers, gauge plate, gap tool, thermometer, sharpie ink (for measuring temperature around 900°f), soot (for temp near 1500°f), and a small scale for weight. I also use body parts for comparison.
Hi Andrew. Slide rule? All my working life I’ve called them vernier gauges. I stand to be corrected 🙂 Love these videos - thank you
Not a slide rule (which is how we did scientific and engineering calculations pre-digital calculator).
Never knew the correct name for those tension gauges! Thank u Andrew.
Hands down Andrew is the BEST!!! 💜👏❤
thanks Andrew!
Thank you
Very informative thank you. I'm new to silversmithing and can never get ring sizing right please Andrew could you do video on this subject
Hi Andrew, could you please make a video for measuring and making a faceted stone setting/cullet thanks in advance.
Thanks for this, Andrew. Could yu do a review of the best sort of jeweller's magnifying headpiece? The one I am using me is driving me to drink as it doesn't fit me properly and I can get the tightening nuts to maintain their settings so the visor keeps falling onto my nose . . . :-(
Get yourself a genuine OptiVisor the cheap knock offs have exactly the problem you describe ( you get what you pay for)
I was brought up using slide rules. A lot quicker than using logarithmic tables. Not quite so accurate but adequate for many calculations.
They are quite collectable now! But totally unsuitable for measuring length!
Do you always use this? I often just use dividers or calipers to measure. Thank you for sharing, always nice to see. It’s inspired me to start making more videos of my own
Also what camera are using?
I use a calipers but I'm not satisfied with it. Will be watching this and interested in what you have to say
I’m saving money to buy the Jura Digital divider, its expensive af
Hi Andrew, Love my slide rule, but as you say it doesn't automatically switch off - nasty when you go to use it and you hadn't switched it off :(
Not a slide rule slide rule is a totally different item, I have only ever heard them referred to as gemstone gauges , have gone through three of them even the expensive ones don't seem to last Gone back to my non electronic version
