- Andrew shows you how to fit a wooden handle to a graver. Then shape the graver for the most efficient use and then grinds the tip and shows you a couple of ways to polish the tip to a mirror finish.
Andrew is on lockdown for the next few weeks and is producing films based upon what you want to see.
Please reach out to him by what ever means you can and ask him some questions that he can make films about. It may be something simple or just a thought but please reach out to him so he can make some content for us all to keep us entertained over the next few months.

Thank You! What a happy & pleasant surprise it was to see you demonstrate that angle gadget! I purchased it from PMC Supplies 2 weeks ago, after ruining a couple of gravers when trying to sharpen . The tool came with no instruction or diagram. I suggested they post a short video as I couldn’t even get the graver to stay tight in the tool. Thanks for such Great detail! I’m going to post link to your video, under the reviews for the tool. I’m a Long time subscriber 👍🏻Thanks Again.
Thank you Andrew. I find your tutorials invaluable. I am a mostly self taught jeweller living in a very remote village in Spain. You have helped answer so many questions and shown ‘how to’ . So much of my learning so far has been trial and error and these tutorials help speed up my learning process 🙂🙏🏻

You can always just "Snap" off that graver to length by using a plier or adjustable wrench
mounting it in a Vise as you have , but just snap it off instead of striking it with a hammer
Works for Me , every time , and removes the chance of the broken off piece striking something or someone : )) Just a tip !
this is some very thorough explanation, with lots of tips and details I didn't know before. One of the best explanatory videos I have seen so far! Subscribed and liked, right away. Will plow through your video collection now ;-) Many thanks!!!
Thank you Andrew. Just what I needed to see and learn. No more wondering how this is done. Great idea for a video! ❤️
Great vid. No background DJ music distraction, just straight to the point (oops, sorry about that) instructions. Enjoyed it, learnt from it, now to practice... Thanks Andrew.
Wonderful video, and wonderful tutorial!!! Thank you!!!
Brilliant as always! I’ve just bought a couple and now I feel confident to go ahead and put the handle on. Thank you 😊 you are really the very best! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Fabulous, thanks Andrew. Brilliant timing: I’m just waiting for my very first graver and handle to be delivered tomorrow! So excited to learn how to use it, but was nervous about the initial setup... now I’m all set 😁😁😁
Thank you Andrew - very timely - I was just trying to work out how this is done!
This was a valuable video - so thorough and yet to the point. I am feeling a bit more confident oh now to set and polish my gravers. thank you much for sharing your knowledge!
you are the man adrew ,thanks for sharing your expert knowledge with us.
Perfect as usual! Thanks Andy! Xo
Thank you andrew, I've made many mistakes in the past trying to get my graders to the right size and sharp. Now I think I can go ahead with confidence. I've tried inlaying 24kt gold in the past and made a bit of a mess, now I'll try again. Thank you so much for your clear instructions.
I've been waiting for this for a long time. Thank you
Great info! Thank you.
most valuable information
Watching, thank for the video
You are brilliant Sir, and the most logical of instructors. Thank you so much...
Thank you. A very clear presentation. I didn't have any questions such as "how did he do that" after watching because you were clear and had great photography.
Thank you! I have had two gravers for ages but no idea how to shorten and sharpen them until now!
Excellent video - exactly what I was hoping or. The entire process from the cradle to the graver, so to speak.
Best comment☝️😅
Bravo Sir. I always learn from you. I’m glad I found you...
Great video. Just waited for you to make a graving tutorial! Thanks!
Trust you to make it perfectly intelligible!
I have seen so many videos and read so many posts and here you are with all the info I needed perfectly presented so anyone can follow! I so wish I had found this video sooner heheheh
Thanks again!
I use a cutting disc to cut and sharpen my gravers! It does throw sparks and get kind of pinched during the cut through but if you're careful it works!!
Nice, thank you Sir.for the video
Andrew Thank you very much.I learned so much from you. Really Your work is 👌👌👌
Thank you good Tutorial
Thank you, I never had such lesson in fine art school...
Wow, thank you! This video answered all my questions. You have new subscriber.
Very interesting
Great tutorial, please Keep doing engraving tutorials. specially that good¡
Thank s.
Great video thank you! There's lots of questions on this thread. "One quick question though" (400 Q's) 🤣 Seriously your videos are awesome, and thank you for all the work you put into a them.
Safety , safety. You should wrap a piece of cloth around the top of the graver before you wack the dispoable part off. Cover it with an old towel and wack. Then you will be safe.
Yes. I too was worried about the camera lens 😀
Nice tutoria Andrew. Can you add a link where to buy the tool for sharpening the engravers in the right angle?? I realy love this tool! Thanks.
excellent video. I recently started using my mini-lathe to make inlaid rings. do you have videos that might help ?
Very interesting. Have you demonstrated any graving techniques previously?
What's the best thing about this Covid lock down? All the extra Andrew Berry vids we are been spoilt with 😉 lol cheers Andrew, actually considering to get some graver to practice with bcoz I been doin jewelry about two years feel I'm ready to try pave settings soon so want to get practicing. Could u suggest what gravers would be best to get started with if one could only purchase a couple at a time? I'd be very grateful for any suggestions you'd have as I really don't know their names yet an I know there's quite a few
Andrew great video as usual. I've never thought about using a graver, but I still learned something for future use. Question, I noticed you didn't use oil on your stones. Do you not use it, or just didn't show it?
I love the instructions but don't I have to put a heal on the graver?
Thank you very much for the video. In the literature they say that fit the shtikhel on the arm, but do not write how. Now I know, and already fitted on the arm. training further. Yours faithfully! Google Translate ☺
Thank you!! Appreciate your sharing your knowledge!
Thanks so much Andrew. I bought a set of gravers a few years ago and now I know how to handle them! So great of you to put this out......Question: Why not shorten the tang end??
Longer tang, stronger anchor
Great presentation, question : my knife and others of sort , break off at very tip , how do I correct ?
Great instructional video as usual. One quick question though: you didn’t put any heel on the graver. Is there a specific reason for it or the slight 2-3 degrees polishing of the sides at the tip is enough to make the graver stop from plunging into the material?
Hai sir. I am sunish.
Indian.
Gold work.
Its a Good idea to 'OIL" the stone too , before sharpening the graver . It helps to lubricate the steel , helps remove residue and helps preserve the stone " : )
Hi Andrew. You mention at 11:40 recovery from over heating the graver is covered in another video but don't say which one. May I ask which please. Guess why I need to know lol...
How do you grind the heel on the gravers? Or does your engraving style not require a heel? Thanks!
Hi Andrew! Thenk you very much for sharing your time and knowledge with us. I have a question. Do you have any ideas on how to restore a honecomb soldering block? I tried your method but the flux just doesn't go away and the block broke. I would be very grateful for any advice.
Replace
Excellent video! Highly informative! Been a jeweler.40 years. Always wanted to learn hand push engraving. Decided to teach myself at this point; it’s such a rapidly disappearing art. Spent part of the Covid isolation online gathering up all the parts and gravers. Hard to find the ones not made to go in the pneumatic machines. Some of the gravers I have collected are simply some kind of tool steel square bar stock about 4-6 inches long. Have collected about a dozen each of the various handles you have shown in your video. But it doesn’t answer a particular question I have. What I’ve got is a handful of new long pear shape wood graver handles with a deep slot running all the way down the handle, and no idea how a graver fits into them, or stays in the handle during use. I haven’t found any pictures or info on how these handles are used. Any ideas?
I know this is a year ago that you posted this question but I saw on a video a guy using what you described. Apparently those type handles are similar to a screwdriver that accepts those bits that have duel tips. Like a Phillips tip on one end and a flat on the other? So those graver handles you have allow you to put a graver into the handle and the pull it out and switch it around to the other side if so desired. I’m in the process of making my own now. Hope this helps.
What brand / model is the silver canister torch you were using...?? Thanks
Thank you Andrew. Why is the graver made so wide if you are only going to grind it down to a couple mm. ? Thanks Greg
thanks off to gravin I go!
What kind of torch do you use? Thanks.
where do you get your graver sharpeners?
Can't wait for more videos on this topic. Especially hand push engraving. Which gravers are best suited for specific tasks, what is correct way to hold your graver, things like that.
"That went uh... somewhere on the floor. Yeah, I'll pick it up later."
Don't lie, Andrew. No one picks up anything off the floor unless they have to :p We just vacuum once a year!
it seems this is mostly his preference to length as I like the length 20-25mm beyond my finger tip but that is me. I often use 2 hands so I like longer shanks
I'm so grateful for this video, unfortunately I must have hit the blade in the wrong place because it broke off about a half inch shorter than it was meant to 😅
Only the amount you need to snap off the graver needs to be above the jaws of the vice.
Andrew I would love to see you address Line Gravers. I havent seen anyone present that topic yet. They arent the same tool. No face to sharpen. The belly is the point of contact.
Curious why you didn’t use the natural radius of the wheel to grind out the curved area of the graver?
Tweed Rhino Its not practical. You would have to hold it upside down suspended and not against the grinder table. Then you couldnt see how much is being removed and that tip is tiny.
And don’t forget to cover up your rolling mill to keep grinding grit off of it.
⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘
Would you do the same when applying a handle to your files ?
Yes exactly the same
@@Atthebench thanks hun
Why is your ceragloss black instead of yellow?
Because it has been constantly used. The black is the metal that has come off the gravers
Put a rag over the top before hitting with hammer, it is safer and you won't have to go searching.
Oh yeah , the great Andrew has spoken 😉, of all the videos actually seen. Think you'll made a mistake. You said 12,000 grit, didn't you mean 1200 , 🤔
Think you'll made a mistake.
Well, that was apparently, “ absolutely gorgeous”.
It is a widely held myth that HSS will loose it's temper if it turns blue on a grinding wheel, it is just that, "a myth" HSS would need to become red before it looses any temper
do my work in engraving every metal, god idol, every kind of digain, chisel hammer my country India, Delhi
You're gonna want to puts some oil or water on your whetstones when you're sharpening something
I can't even log in to ask as all it says is details is a required field, but there is no field, so please put my £20 back!!!
Hi Stephen Please can you open a support ticket at www.atthebench.com/helpdesk so we can answer your question fully. thanks
