All Porsche 911s are turbocharged going forward but the Turbo model stands alone in performance and balance. Tom Voelk drives the 911 Turbo S model at Thunder Hill Raceway.
I'm a 38 year old car nut with a 4 year old son. I didn't have much of a relationship with my pops growing up so I'm doing all I can to change that with my boy. We attend car meets together where we buff up my SRT Charger before we go, we go to car shows, races, etc. We even do the mundane like our weekly Sunday pancakes breakfast at our favorite diner - w/o mommy of course. Long story short, Tom, this editorial (it was way more than just a review) touched me. Thank you for sharing. I have promised my son that when he's old enough, we're going to spend a summer following the Yankees cross-country in the 392...
I absolutely love the 2nd half of the video. The part where you're spending time with your son. Unlike any other 911 Turbo S review on the internet. BIG THUMBS UP!
The most under estimated super car.....I know the 570S, R8s, NSX etc. are amazing, but the 911 Turbo does it all, track, road trips, canyons, u name it. I would have this above the GT3 RS just because of the swiss army knife facets. Great review and roadtrip story.
iluvcakes19 Did not mean Porsche the brand, meant the 911 Turbo......read the C/D junior super car comparo where they rated this model above a 570S. When u get near $200k many exotics are an option.
93455Driver I'm glad that you brought that up, Boxsters and Caymans don't sell well so when I say Porsche I mean 911s (I'm excluding the other vehicles Porsche makes as they are luxury vehicles for dentists and soccer moms). Any ways, I still fail to see how the Turbo S is underrated. It's dumb expensive, everyone knows it's insanely fast, and the sheer amount of them I see tells me that they're appreciated.
You are very lucky, I see lots of 911s in south coastal Cali, but Turbo's and GTs are not that common. When I say underrated, I mean that folks gravitate (at this price point) to other great cars, like the 570s (understandable). Maybe it is because there are so many base Carreras and S, that some some one who is in the $200k area is looking for something they deem exotic and/or rare. There loss, the 911 turbos seem to be a great mix of performance, comfort and relative practicality, plus you can fly under the radar since many folks will think 'just another 911' in the Santa Monica , Malibu, types of location. Once we get to petrol heads looking at used 911s though, then my argument falls flat, these folks know what a 911 turbo can do, the 996 Turbo (even) still holds a good residual value in the used market.
I love Porsche 944s and 928s. Many people don't realize that 928 used to be the most powerful Porsche at some point. 944s have never been appreciated as they should have been. Mostly because their engines were shared with Audi 200s. Thank you for your review.
Old video but, picked up an '18 991.2 TT a few months ago, this being my third 911, and can't say enough good things about it. It truly is perfect. I probably would have gone for a TS if my local dealership had one, but this was fully dealer maintained and had less than 10k miles (despite being 5 years old), plus the colors inside and out were what I wanted, so I'm able to live with the 40hp drop lol. I'll drop in a Kline exhaust and base tune and get over 600 easy.
I will own this car someday. Hopefully my rheumatism won't be too inflamed to drive it, by then. Also, the 928 was my favorite Porsche growing u in the 80s. I still love the design.
Great Review Tom. I must say if I had the money, I would certainly purchase a 911 Turbo S. It is a car that never ceases to amaze me with each subsequent generation.
It definitely does not suck to be you. And a nice family as well. I agree that the 928 & 944 are the best looking Porsches. In my younger days, I remember seeing those next to Mazda RX-7s & Datsun 280Zs. Sports car hatchbacks rule!
chamade166 when i got into the hospital, the hospital sent someone to interview me and sign me up for possible "public aid" (i'm unemployed and was "underemployed" previously) this week i was put on medicaid for my state and they will cover all the bills i didn't pay already. i was afraid i'd have to liquidate my 401K and maybe remortgage my home (i own free and clear). or file bankruptcy where i probably would lose my home.
Only if you decide to go without insurance. That's your decision. The medical cost is high in the US because the care is the best, the doctors the best trained, and the easy access to a lawyer willing to sue your doctors or hospitals drives up the amount of precautionary tests and number of concurring doctors. I have insurance, and won't be losing my house with a 3 week stay in a great hospital - I take personal responsibility for myself and my family.
The 911 Turbo is a great Super Car that is Comfortable, Fast and Handles Amazing, you can daily drive this car without any problems ! For the money, you cannot beat a 911 Turbo !
Good video! I have owned: Lamborghini Murcialago, Viper, Corvette ZR1 and my Turbo S is without a doubt the fastest, best technology, lowest profile and most exciting car I have ever driven!!!! The launch control with the 4 wheel drive is breathtaking!!!!!!!! If you can buy one---BUY IT!!!!!!!! World Class Fast!!!
Nice to have such a practical review, thank you for being a down to earth enthusiast rather than a self important reviewer just repeating the sales brochure. My 718 will be delivered in January and having driven one on several occasions I cannot wait for the time to pass. My present Audi TT cabriolet is a lovely car but with none of the character and thrill of the Boxster.
Tom! thanks for an amazing video. I loved the 2007 or 2008 porsche turbo review that you did and this one is right up there with it. great that you sort of let us in your life as well. bit more personality makes a whole world of a difference. great review! keep up the good work.
Awesome video! Especially enjoyed the Pebble Beach directors cut! Glad to see there are others who really enjoy the styling of the 944 and 928. I only wish they were easier to maintain long term.
As a 944 Turbo owner I must applaud your comment on the 944 and 928. I am looking at either a 928 or a Boxter as my next Porsche purchase. I really need to sell off a couple cars first though as I am up to nine with the 944 Turbo, lol. Just subbed.
Porsche sent me an add of a turbo driving off into the sunset but with my last name printed on the licence plate. I was invited for a test drive, but unfortunately I was 12. Fate has been kind enough that I have a C4S now... I'm looking forward to road trips like you and your son had. Nice video, but shame you forgot the TP test! :-).
Tom you mentioned a more thorough review including the interior but there's no link and I couldn't find it. Is it on another channel? Great video by the way.
Excellent and inspiring review Sir. Driving Laguna Seca's course is a bucket list item of mine (perhaps even in a Porsche 911, but a Miata would be fine too.) When you were reviewing the Porsche you said it was the Turbo S and later you talked about the overboost function. Does the Turbo S always make more HP and Torque then the "pedestrian" 911 Turbo, or is one paying for the overboost function, like in a Volvo Polestar car? Oh, and does your son have time for Ultimate Frisbee at his new school? I think that was part of a Hyundai Genesis review you did a while back...
The S always makes more power, its turbo units are larger. I know he played Ultimate last year, he might be studying harder this year though. Dreams of Porsches are good motivation...
Another great review. I love watching car reviews and yours are my favorite ones to watch. You make the reviews fun, funny and really informative. Thanks for making them and keep up the great work! PS: So jealous of the drive you got to take in that Porsche. There's nothing like taking a ride along the countryside in a very capable sports car.
I did use the manual feature and it is as good as you would expect. Nearly any driver would be outsmarted by the automatic mode though. After a few hard laps (nearly 5 miles long at Thunderhill) it was clear that it somehow knew exactly what to do. It's eerie. After I got comfortable on the track I would pay attention to what it was doing. It's a mind reader.
Driven Car Reviews Thanks for responding. Yours are my favorite car reviews. Whenever I see a review of a car I come back and check to see if you've done a review of the same car. You know to be sure they know what they're talking about. LOL Have a good day and get driving!
Want more Porsche action? Here's my piece on the 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman S. Yes, the one with the four-cylinder turbo. ua-cam.com/video/mCnMSAJu8rE/v-deo.html
9:25 I find that ad very entertaining as Dr. P designed the original Volkswagen, later rebadged Beetle, nicknamed Bug, based on its cutesy looks, on contract to the Hitler in 1934. Of course it makes sense as the 911's (worst?) origin design elements come from the people's car. If only the 911 could have had a better father? But then the Cayman mid-engine machine may never needed to have been designed.
Good video I just have to say it's kind of messed up that so many people think you need to study hard and get int a good college to be able to afford a 911 turbo. It doesn't have to work that way, such a cliché to say that. I dropped out of college and bought a turbo. Don't keep putting my generation down and pushing them into debt because none of them will be able to ever afford a Porsche at that point !
Probably the nicest guy on UA-cam.

This review puts a smile on my face. :)

93455Driver pff! Porsche is anything but underrated. maybe to non-car people but even then that's doubtful considering all of them on the road.
iluvcakes19 Did not mean Porsche the brand, meant the 911 Turbo......read the C/D junior super car comparo where they rated this model above a 570S. When u get near $200k many exotics are an option.

Ah, I see your point.
I was never really a Porsche fan, until i had the opportunity to drive a 911 Turbo. My god, i have wanted one so bad ever since.
Yeah, it's like morphine
Great job Tom. You're my favorite car reviewer. Down to earth and genuine. Makes me want to do a similar drive with my son. Keep up the good work.
Tom, seriously one of your best reviews ever !! Your right, kids grow up so fast.
I think this might be your best episode! Loved it.
What a great heart felt video. Nice one Tom.
Good video, Tom. Glad you got to enjoy the trip with your son.
I love Porsche 944s and 928s. Many people don't realize that 928 used to be the most powerful Porsche at some point. 944s have never been appreciated as they should have been. Mostly because their engines were shared with Audi 200s. Thank you for your review.
Loved the added feature at the end!! Your videos are truly spectacular.

Ha Ha, "Kills Bugs Fast", that was a 1997 ad, wasn't it?
Such a beautiful car
I will own this car someday. Hopefully my rheumatism won't be too inflamed to drive it, by then. Also, the 928 was my favorite Porsche growing u in the 80s. I still love the design.
All the more reason to get into a good college? More like get a good job. The two aren't always mutually exclusive.
True but I'm a stats guy.
The stats say, getting into a good college usually puts you into a whole lotta debt.
I have two friends with engineering degrees, both making well into six figures. College paid off, supercars in the garage.
Everyone on UA-cam has these friends, lol.
Is that what statistics say? :P
Great Review Tom. I must say if I had the money, I would certainly purchase a 911 Turbo S. It is a car that never ceases to amaze me with each subsequent generation.
Great review. I love the 911 Turbo.

i had congestive heart failure a little over a month ago, 3 weeks in the hospital. about $200K, wow, I coulda had a 911 Turbo!
And yet the hospital bill sounds like the wiser investment. Hope you're recovering completely!
Driven Car Reviews Tom, I'm doing fine Thank you! I just found out I qualify for state aid that may cover a lot of it :)
*May* cover?? I have seen documentaries about the US where people become homeless from health bills and I guess it's true.
chamade166 when i got into the hospital, the hospital sent someone to interview me and sign me up for possible "public aid" (i'm unemployed and was "underemployed" previously) this week i was put on medicaid for my state and they will cover all the bills i didn't pay already. i was afraid i'd have to liquidate my 401K and maybe remortgage my home (i own free and clear). or file bankruptcy where i probably would lose my home.

Nice review with a human touch. Car is freaking beautiful. I'm in love.
Still my dream car. My uncle owned a 930 that I nearly crashed in a road barrier when that Turbo kicked in. Still my goal to own one.
Good video! I have owned: Lamborghini Murcialago, Viper, Corvette ZR1 and my Turbo S is without a doubt the fastest, best technology, lowest profile and most exciting car I have ever driven!!!! Fantastic review - loved the behind the scenes part
always enjoy and appreciate your work. Thank you!
This was one of your best Tom. Right up there next to your Miata Love video!
Thanks Nigel. It was a great (and expensive) week.
Thank you Tom. Time with your children is very important much agreed.
What a great review of a phenomenal car intertwined with a real life story that I can aspire to follow with one of my sons some day-thanks.
perfection exist this car is from another planet!!
This review was awesome !! .I completely loved it !!
love the turbo s , im saving to buy one
Tom! thanks for an amazing video. I loved the 2007 or 2008 porsche turbo review that you did and this one is right up there with it. great that you sort of let us in your life as well. bit more personality makes a whole world of a difference. great review! keep up the good work.

For the longest time it didn't seem cool to like the the 944 and 928s. It seems like they're beginning to be appreciated.
Quite a nice trip, but nothing compared to my weekend. On saturday i stood up early in the morning and.......ahm.....ok, you won. ; )
As a 944 Turbo owner I must applaud your comment on the 944 and 928. I am looking at either a 928 or a Boxter as my next Porsche purchase. I really need to sell off a couple cars first though as I am up to nine with the 944 Turbo, lol. Just subbed.
Uh oh, now Jr has been bitten by the Porsche bug.
Who do you think that "study hard" line is directed to?
Porsche sent me an add of a turbo driving off into the sunset but with my last name printed on the licence plate. I was invited for a test drive, but unfortunately I was 12. Fate has been kind enough that I have a C4S now... I'm looking forward to road trips like you and your son had. Nice video, but shame you forgot the TP test! :-).
Your a class act Tom.. Keep up the great reviews, and happy trails !! :)
trust me, i'm studying for one

Excellent review, very enjoyable!
This is a really well made interestinh video, good written!
Nice!

Great video, Tom... car is not bad either...!
Hey Tom! I love your job and I was wondering how you got your job? I would really like to do what you do some day :D!
As always, awesome job

Definition of a Sleeper Supercar :D
"I need to make more money" - bro the amount of times I said that... :)
Great review!! Sick car!!
GREAT REVIEW... AS ALWAYS!
This will be my daily driver someday :)
best video to date !
Awesome car.
Awesome trip.

Engine swap the two. ;)
The sleek fastback design of the 911 looks better than the wedge shape of s Lamborghini to me.
Porsche there is no substitute .
great video!
Great review!
Great review.
Хорошая машина, видео и виды !
IfI had the $, which should I buy? Turbo or Hurican?
How would you change a starter motor or a battery on that?
very nice Video!
well done, thanks
really enjoyed that. subbed :)
My boss took me for a “spin” in his toy the other day. OH MY GOD! This thing nearly took OFF
And now you want to make more money, right?
Ha ha, he has two of these babies, heaven knows why but hey it’s a long way from my little hatch back bahaaa maybe I do need a pay rise 😉
A bit awkward a pro driver recommends auto mode…tells you how well the PDK was engineered
I need my MBA soon
Tom, did your son get behind the wheel of the Porsche?
He's 19. The contract says drivers need to be over the age of 23.
Ah, legal reasons... I betcha he asked, but he had a blast on the passenger seat.
Billy Sou notice that he didn't say 'no' explicitly..?
Oh, I like you joner800...
joner800 - Slay.
Car reviewed in California but has a Florida License plate 🤔

Going to college is not gonna get you a car like this lol
Ugh. I want a manual one tho. But I know pdk is faster
nice
That laugh thooo
God damn it, I need that M.D. degree soon XD
TheLoneVolfe or invest in housing, become a mortgage broker, start or buy an successful company or invest in stock with college is not the only way!
Sigh... one day when I get tired of my 991.1 4S. In Red of course od Black.
Pensé que cuando hablabas de tu hijo, te referías al 911 jeje. Hasta que se apareció.
5:12 get into a good college? And drown in debt? No. Build a business and enjoy freedom
save yourselves some production cost and get rid of the back ground music and all the talking ...
☺
Absolutely nothing launches like a PDK
