Porsche 992 911 Turbo S fastest, most expensive, worth it?

- Let's take a closer look at what the 992 generation Porsche Turbo S does well and what it does not do so well. Until the release of the GT2 this is the fastest 911 in straight line and the most expensive.

This is the real reason why I love your reviews - you say actual interesting facts. Other reviewers sound like sales personnel reading text from the catalogue. Cheers!
A lot of his waffle isn't exactly "facts" though.
@@ngc-fo5te He’s the only reviewer in two years to say the Turbo S isn’t aa good as you think lol. Ive never had more fun driving a car, and I’ve driven plenty of manuals. We still have an s2k and trust me, being a manual that revs to 9k is NOT more fun than a Turbo S lol.
@@992turbos My wife used to have a Turbo S - but I never drove it. If I was buying a 911 I'd probably go for the Carrera 4 GTS - but since I am very tall I cannot drive any of them.
@@992turbos I just watched a review by Nick Murray saying Turbo S isn’t as good as some people say. I love manual transmission too much, so it’s a bit of a turn off.
@@jazzragu We do too, we still have a low mileage S2k. Revs to 9k. Super fun. But nowhere near as capable as a 911. Turbo S does 0-30 in 0.9 seconds. Ain’t no way you gon be able to manually shift outta first into second that quickly.
Just took possession of my new 2022 turbo S about four weeks ago. It’s unbelievable! Fast and handles like a dream - yes, the price was not friendly but expected when you get this value and performance!
Congrats
Praise God! and cograts! enjoy your 911 turbo S
exactly!! They handlle like a dream. They beat other 911s like carrera by 5-10 seconds even on twisty tracks so Carrera models do not kick the ass of turbo s like dis guy said. It actually beat the gt3 around SPA circuit in Belgium on another channel called carwow
I’ve owned a Carrera S, a 992 Turbo S and now a 991.2 GT3 Touring and 993. All are great cars, but in no circumstance did the Carrera outperform the Turbo S in the corners. The turn in, grip and cornering speeds on the Turbo S are way higher and the steering feel is the same, if not better. The Touring owns all when it comes to this stuff and I get why someone might prefer a RWD, manual 992 with a more linear engine. Personally, I think the Turbo S is more fun than the PDK Carrera S. The air-cooled cars and GT cars are on another level. For me: Carrera S < Turbo S < GT3T/993
He’s talking out of his arse
I love the Turbo S. I think you kind of have to look at it as more of a GT. When you do that, it becomes one of the best handling, fastest, and reasonably comfortable GT's out there!
INDEED 👌🏿!!
I HIGHLY AGREE!! ATLEAST THERE ARE SOME SMART PEOPLE WHO UNDERSTAND HOW GOOD AND VERSATILE THE 911 TURBO S IS😃
Nick Murray: Another cool production. Thank you for the marvelous content. Noticed the video is precisely "9:11" minutes in length. Don't think that length of time was a random coincidence. Nicely done, Nick.
@@owinthomas9678 yes it is, and that 12th second of that 9th minute was a real doozy too.
Nick is really a reptile! Don’t let the exterior fool you 😀
Having had the good luck to own Carrera 4S a GT3 and now a Turbo S I can categorically state the GT3/Touring is for the track and the Turbo S for the road, especially long distance work.Unless you do mainly track driving the Turbo S is in a league of its own with incredible performance and comfort.
GTS is the sweet spot in the range.
Turbo S power is basically unusable in 90% of populated areas of the US. Unless you’re prepared to go directly to jail. Carrera S or GTS have more than enough power, are lighter, are RWD, handle much better and you can get them with a manual. If you live in Germany and travel long distances on the Autobahn it’s a great 911.
@@farzana6676 cliche. any 911 is the sweet spot according to options
@@gregs8685 suggest you view Harry’s Garage as he has tested both cars.
@@gregs8685 top speed is not relevant in Porsche cars. Acceleration is and safety offered by the 4 wheel drive. I am on my 4th Porsche at the moment so I love them
Iv done a track day in this car and I can hands down say it’s a dream on a track!! So capable. Would hold its own against a 992 gt3
it actually beat a gt3 around the spa circuit in Belgium on another car channel called carwow
I would take any porsche 911 over any other car on the road.
Really??!
@@iluvcakes19 yes really any porsche 911 is a great car to drive i love the style no matter the year.
@@Frdtsl Cool; you're more than welcome to feel that way. Porsches are great cars. However I think the car community has so much to offer and the options are so robust, I don't think I could be that loyal to Porsche and Porsche only. But hey, different strokes for different folks.
@@iluvcakes19 what car do you think feels and handles better to drive than a porsche 911?
@@Frdtsl feeling and handling are completely subjective, but I didn't say any car did those things better--that is your requirement. I'll leave feeling alone because it's a vague term for cars and means different things to different people, but plenty of cars handle very well. Corvettes do, especially since c6 on up; RX-7/RX-8, Miatas, OG NSXs from the 90s, just about any Lotus, to name a few. Furthermore, the Gen 5 Viper ACR will go toe-to-toe with any Porsche in the handling department.
I own a 911 but I'm a car guy first and foremost, I've had the pleasure to drive many, with Porsche and Vipers being my favorite; Corvette isn't far behind, and the Nissan GT-R was a dream car when I was in early college.
Nick, thanks for the disclaimer. I'm usually on the fence about fat baby roasting but your sound reasoning has convinced me. Well done!
Nick, your points are all correct. What you miss, is this car is exactly what it is designed to be. The perfect Grand Touring automobile. Spend a day in a Turbo S carving the Alps or driving through the city, and you will exit feeling refreshed. Try driving a GT3, or even a Carerra T for more than an hour, and your back hurts, your ears ring, and your arms, legs, and shoulders are tired from constantly shifting. It is true that a GT3 will out corner the TTS (easily), but I have yet to see a track without a straight bit sufficient to often make up the deficit in time. Put the same tires on both cars and watch the advantage of the lighter track built car further fade away. As far as a stock Carerra walking away in the twisty bits…well I would have to see that for myself. If you are a person that grew up with an automatic transmission in your moms Vista Cruiser and have always dreamed of grinding gears like the old race car drivers of yesteryear, I can understand the fascination with shifting. However, there is nothing fast, or efficient, with gear grinding since the PDK was released. The same with loud pipes. The only people that enjoy a loud car are the ones that made it that way, and that is only if they are not subjected to the drone for more than an hour at a time. Finally, I would say that anyone could easily drive a TTS a 100 miles to the Nurburg Ring, take three laps, then drive home and be ready to do it again the next day. To do that in a Carrera T, well you could, but it would have to be someone who enjoys the punishment of the experience, rather than the comfort of luxury. Oh, BTW, the TTS would kill any other 911 (short of track focused cars) in virtually any kind of street driving (and most tracks), because it is not running on a go cart track without a straightaway.
This.
Sorry mate, I will take my Turbo S over your Carrera S everyday and twice on Sunday.
Sorry not sorry, I’ll take the Turbo S everyday of the week and 10 times on Sunday.
same here lol carrera S is not even in the same league.. Im puzzled why he talks about bad handling i find mine super good... mine is a 991 tho
Nah - for half the money, the Carrera will be more than enough for your little weekend jaunts.
Hi Nick! Long time follower. Love, love this review. Your sense of humor is right on target as usual. Thanks, and keep doing what you're doing.
Love the honest and contrarian viewpoint!! This video is precisely why I love watching your content, Nick. The lightweight package does help some of the Turbo S detractors you mention in the video. However, totally agree on Carrera T or a S with a manual for greater engagement. This is actually why a fair number of prior 911 owners have been switching to the Boxster and Cayman line up.
I went to a Porsche track day, they had the T and S, but the Cayman GTS was the most fun.
Nick, you are the most amazing presenter I've ever seen. THE most entertaining, likeable, and convincing content anywhere. Go get 'em!
Thank you for keeping it real Nick and not sounding like a salesperson/ spokesperson . Truly appreciate the "no-fear-or-favor" review!
3:52 Nailed it (literally...) Great vid and love the "happy snaps", vid inserts, and of course the evil, little giggles when making your points.
I was on a waiting list to get a 992 Carrera gts for about two years with no luck... Ended up getting a 991.2 turbo s for the same money. Couldn't be happier.
In the smoky mountains, on some of the curviest roads on the earth, literally, Turbos dominate. They're so capable in the corners and explosive in the straights that nothing can really keep up. I can't speak to the fun factor, I've never driven one. But Nick will also tell you that manuals are more fun. On the twistiest roads in the smoky mountains the PDK is honestly a lot of fun. You're constantly, and I mean constantly, shifting between 2nd and 3rd. The paddles make that a lot of fun. I'd say the guys/gals who drive in the mountains with us are split 50/50 on which transmission they prefer. But you won't find anyone there claim the Turbo is not fun. My guess, it's not fun going straight
Manual all day in the mountains running 2-3 and occasionally 4 in 718 Boxster S. Love the NC back roads and blessed to live here and drive them to work😊
I have 3,000 miles on a 2022 Turbo S Lightweight I custom ordered in June 2021 and received in June 2022. Solid as a bank vault Launch control entertaining as the car truly puts the power down with its AWD. Is it not as engaging as lesser Porsche models? I would imagine .My McLaren 600 LT feels so nimble /lithe/sporty in comparison.
I have the carbon bucket seats Alcantara steering wheel and bits plus carbon roof and mirrors all of which I like and all make the car a visually more appealing and sporty feeling to me personally as I have decades of exotic car ownership after getting away from boring (styling wise)P cars.
So the TS is an awesome piece of engineering perfection that can be engaging when driven fast on a track or in the mountains/canyons
The more I drive the TS the more I like it . Nevertheless I agree there are certainly more engaging / fun to drive / sporty choices /way less expensive choices out there
You want engagement? Get a 718 GTS manual transmission. For me, mid engine is way more fun than rear engine.
It would be nice to see you review a Carrera gt if anyone is crazy enough to let you drive theirs.
Hopefully Nick can use his mamy charms to get one via the Carrera GT speciallist that takes care of his 993
Great and totally truthful review Nick. Love the 9:11 timeline and that outro 🤣🤣
I have a 9:12 video.
Another great video, Nick. I could not agree with you more. I owed a 991 Carrera 7 speed and just loved it. Baseline, could not afford much extras. Recently upgraded to a 992 Turbo, non-S. I just enjoyed driving the Carrera so much more. I used these as my daily drivers and although the Turbo is a great machine, I enjoyed the Carrera so much more!! Please keep up what you do, Nick. Really valuable space for Porsche people.
I test drove a 992 Carrera S in my country and rented a Turbo S in switzerland for 2 weeks some time after. You are absolutely right, the car is devastatingly fast (and in my opinion handles very well still) but it is a complete soulless snoozefest to drive at anything less than 9/10. Because of the ludicrous price, the value proposition in my opinion is very, very poor. Ever since that two week trip, I steer all potential 911 buyers to a base model or at most, a C2S. There is absolutely no need to spend more money to get the full 911 experience. Leave the Turbo S to the newly rich youtubers with no imagination. Thanks for the video
Hi Kevin, may I ask where you rented the Turbo S in Switzerland? Would like to test drive it aswell. Thanks
Good to have that good old kiwi way of looking at things,
All the best from kiwi land😄
His back!! Nice to see some recent and frequent vids on cars..
Nicely explained Nick, in theory you are correct they don't handle as well but, and I'm talking about the 991 here, the tech underneath makes them so easy to drive quickly the grip they produce is out of this world compared to the base cars.
I do enjoy watching them struggle on the tight narrow stuff and you're right, the base cars are better drivers cars and that's the most important thing 👍
Exactly. The only hassle is that the tech devoids feel. The Turbo S has very little feel whatsoever.

Excellent review. To the point and clear
That was a good video Nick!!
Straight up! Thanks Nick.
I agree that as the power and capability goes up you really get a rapid diminishing return curve on the street for driver fun. Awesome car and capabilities, but on a top shelf and hard to reach those limits. But would be a great GT all weather car for sure.
I still want the turbo S
I laughed my lungs out. Thanks Nick. I'll stick to my dream 911s.
Thanks for a good review.
Glad you added the disclaimer at the end 😁
Great review, even with that filthy window. Love to hear your input on the Z06.
I will take this Porsche any given days. No questions asked!!! Absolute beauty
I have owned a late model Carrera and Carrera S before my Turbo S and can say with all authority that it is far, far, more rewarding and fun to drive. It also feels much more stable at high speeds. This car finally fulfills my life long search for the ultimate accelerating car as nothing can approach the feeling of power it conveys. I have been through numerous V12 Mercedes and several Corvettes, including two C8s, that cannot come close. Ii's really with a sense of relief that I have finally found the ultimate.
Is it more stable because of the wing?
I think most people would rather own a Turbo/Turbo S, but cost and availability stop them. Nick`s viewpoint is in the minority I would say. We don`t live in Europe, we have wide open straight roads in the North America.
Same boat as you Alan. Both cars are night and day.
@@89itis The huge tires and suspension, plus connected steering require little corrective movement. You could almost take your hands off the wheel in a straight line at 100+
What about the sound difference? Do you agree with Nick? I will get my Turbo S in a couple of days, but worried about the exhaust sound…
You nailed it!!!!
Owned. 992 turbo s cab now for 5 months already done 7 k miles in it across Europe. The car is simply best at everything performance, feel, looks, warranty servicing, quality and price making it very hard to find a better all round car to challenge it.
Absolutely agree with you nick great review👋👋👋
love the 911 line up, and my 2000 C4 has nearly 200,000 miles on it and it still puts a smile on my face, the Turbo S would be my dream car.
Another great video from Nick Murray! "Econ: Who Cares" and eating baby jokes. Too funny! Keep-m coming and a big Thank You from Charlotte, NC
man I love your videos
Another great production. Love my 2015 boxster S with PDK, sport chrono, and sport exhaust. To be quite honest, it is enough for me speed wise. Your assessment is spot on. The turbos are nice, but is it really worth it for mostly straight line speed? If I could ever upgrade, it would be a 718 gts 4.0, base 911, or a T. In that order.
Agreed - I like your thinking, especially if you want to enjoy driving more than you want to impress your friends.
I think the Cayman is the real spiritual successor of the 911. A true driver's car. The latest iteration of the 911 seems really bloated and tech laden.
@@maxn.7234 Yep. And that has corrupted the feel.
The rear axle steering definitely helps A LOT with the handling. Go try one with vs one w/o on a slalom course. There's a world of difference.
I have owned one with and without RAS, it makes some difference but mostly only on the edge handing. I notice most Porsche owners can not tell if they have RAS or not.
@@NickMurray Most Porsche owners dont race their cars, so I can understand that (although Id hope they atleast noticed the significantly reduced turning circle when parking). But if you do race it, its very noticable, the improvement in stability and grip when changing direction rapidly at speed is something you cant miss.

i love ur car contend ❤best channel on YT !!!
i love the lineage of the 911 turbo but i do think the fact the lower Carrera models are turbocharged now have really sapped some of the appeal of the Turbo/Turbo S. It is the sexiest 911 to me though.
Agreed that the new Turbos have lost some appeal.
Completely agree with your video Nick, mostly because I can't afford a Turbo S and love my rear wheel drive 991.2 Carrera S:) Never driven a Turbo S so of course my C2s is so much better. All in fun! All good cars.
Thanks Nick
Nobody says Race-Tex with more irony in the voice like Mr Murray. Great Video!
Very nice review. Honesty and some brutal truth is what every reviewer needs. I'd go with the his/hers Carrera T's over the Turbo. Or I'll just keep my GT3.
Preach the truth! My fav video you’ve done. Hilarious!
Thanks for putting out more content Nick - much appreciated!
Omg. Bursted out laughing at the baby + Weber grill comment at the end 😂😂😂😂😂😂
This is a really fun review! btw totally get the dodge excitement bit. Mustang V6 is my first car (that I could afford), ironically, it’s my most exciting car compared to all others. After 4 years of daily driving I was so used to that car and can drift a bit. After I pulled 1.2 lateral G in that car with shitty stock tires the smile on my face was invaluable.
Later I got M5, Golf R, and now 911 C2S, all crazily great vehicles to enjoy, but, none of them get me that heart pumping moment after every drive in the Mustang V6…
Yes they did give me big smiles though :) especially the Porsche, crazy amount of grip and acceleration.. easily 1.3g entering the highway.😅
great review. You're a lot more honest than all the fanboys, and I completely identify with the "it's too easy to drive, I want something I can feel"
This phrase about to easy to drive is so stupid that I have to respond. In fact it is opposite, everyone can slide a little in RWD car, but a few in AWD😊 Nick clearly can not drive or is to affraid to push Turbo S to its limits, where the fun begins.
Another amazing vid. Keep them coming. “Fat baby and Webber grill to cook it in” 😂
The "easy to drive fast" should NOT be a negative, most car companies strive for decades to get to that point. As a car that has done 0 to 60 MPH in 1.8 Seconds, 0 to 100 to 0 MPH in 9.8 Seconds and a 0 to 200 MPH run in 14.8 Seconds which is mind blowing.
Hi Nick, your thoughts on Turbo vs S, and by the way when you starting wedding video editing?
I admit...this was a funny video Nick...well done.
I have a 981 Cayman S manual with all the right options and I can't seem to get enough of it. I am also now next in line for a 718 GTS at my dealership which may happen in Jan. but I don't know if its worth it given the amount of joy I have already. I'm concerned about paying 60k more and getting a worse experience. Any thoughts Nick?
Love your reviews Nick, yah if I were rich I’d get a Spyder RS, but alas I am not so I’ll gladly settle for my lowly 981 Boxster S and love every single minute of it
I agree wholeheartedly Nick. However, I would like to actually add 110 pounds to the back seat of my manual GTS cab, can you give Katy a call?
Will be in Birmingham Alabama this time next week at the Porsche Driving event. Can't wait to drive the 992 Turbo S there on the track. I'm hopeful they'll have 992 GT3's as well for us to drive. Let's see.
Good take Nick.

You really are a spécial person, keep it that way. 🥰
In some of your recent videos, I've observed some issues with sound you record from the inside of the cars - it sounds as if it was overdriven or clipping (e.g. @1:30, @5:38). Could you look up into that?
Yes fixed for future videos ( well one more with this issue )
@@NickMurray Nick you really find the Turbo S sound inferior to the Carerra base model or GTS? Thx! 😑

The alcanterra seat belt guides are pretty funny. More money than sense must apply here.
Growing up in the era of the 930, which scared the living hell out of everybody including my 18 year old self in 1984, our 992 represents point and shoot warp speed luxury. Not a bad thing at all .. just different. It is all in your pick of the poison. Great production NM
I had accidently placed your video on 1.5x speed. Combined with your Kiwi accent, maybe a lousy mic and background noise... I had a good chuckle. I recommend trying it HAHA
Hello from Sweden as always 😁👌
I got a free ride in one at PECLA last year and the driver said make sure your feet are fully braced against the floor. Holy sh*t that thing was crazy... and he went like that for a whole lap. I like the Stormtrooper look on this one too
Excellent review, nobody reviews a car like Nick, At least one reviewer who is not a Porsche corporate shrill. :)
I sold my base 981 Cayman and bought a 996 turbo. Turbo was mighty but I missed the 2.7 base cayman manual!!!! The only fun I could have in the turbo was boosting down the motorway...
Best commentary ever
It's funny how Nick smirks at expensive superfluous options, in the context of cars which are exactly that in the first place :)
Agree with your points, you may want to go over to CarWow and watch the comparison test GT3 v Turbo S. The sound from my PSE Carrera C4S is superior and fun and being a manual even more fun.
But the 150 Pounds in the back are offset by 110 Pounds in the front due to the 4WD gears... so it shouldn't be that bad.
Epic spec!
I hope you get to review a Sport Classic.
In the pipe 👍

I have a Cayman S... 2018 718 model. It corners like it's on rails. How does the 911 Turbo S compare? What metrics does one use to measure ability to turn without skidding or fishtailing?
I love the Caymans. Congrats. The 911s tend to have more grip, particularly under power, but are less lively. They don't like to be thrown around the way a mid-engined car does, they want to drive forward with purpose and smoothness. Thoroughly enjoy driving the Caymans around a road course, I often rent one and then end up passing Huracans etc. while I'm out on a tear.
Geez Dude, You are genius
Very interesting comparison my friend 🤔 thank you … food for thought the turbo car as a daily driver (all weather) and the 911 T the drivers car.
Thanks for being honest
Completely disagree with you Nick, have had the pleasure of driving most of the models in the 911 range and I would choose the turbo every time. Blisteringly fast, stable, makes you feel like a much better driver than you are, and relatively more comfortable than other 911’s. The gt3 is great but incredibly harsh and undrivable on the road and you can’t buy one. The base and s just don’t feel special enough.
Great points!
I kind of wish I could get the best of both worlds, the turbo S AND the gt3. I guess I'll just have to get them both 😂
The base model is the best… all the joy for less of the price.
The reason the Turbo S doesn't come in stick is because it would be a second slower to 60. I used to only drive manuals, but once I drove my friend's Turbo S, I had to get a PDK on my Targa 4 GTS....
They don’t come in stick because there’s no manual clutch that can handle 800NM of stress. BMW removed the manual from the G8X M3/M4 Comp version for this reason.
I wish that Racetex would be Alcantara, but Racetex is just a fancy name for microfiber.
Its only allowed to be called Alcantara (which is also technically a microfiber), when it comes from the company Alcantara © in Italy.
Do you know it's price back in NZ? Wheels Australia has it starting at half a million dollars plus options and on road taxes. Depreciation?
Is this based off of traction control on or off?
Good evening, I suggest you test ride the new carrera T, we need your assessment, can you?
