  • A film about the last day of passenger operation on the line between Cholsey and Wallingford on Saturday 13 June 1959. Made in black and white, 8mm silent.

    The railway as I remember it from when I was a kid. I must have been around when this was happening but as to where I could not say. I am astounded at the number of people along the line, shows how much notice we took of H&S then. Now it would be a nightmare for them. Brought back some happy memories.

    Wallingford station lay derelict until the early 70s when houses were built on it , I can remember walking through what was left of it using it as a short cut to St John's road coming out somewhere near the ABM building....fond memories.

    This may have been the last "official' working to Wallingford - however, two years later on 9th April 1961, Wallingford was one of the destinations included on the RCTS "Berks & Wilts" rail tour which used a 6-car dmu throughout. If I am correct , Frank Dumbleton is involved with the Great Western Society at Didcot, to whom appreciation is due for providing the opportunity to see this historic and quite extraordinary footage !
