Chronicle introduction to Didcot Railway Centre 1970
Переглядів 2413 роки тому
Chronicle was a programme broadcast on BBC from 1966 to 1991 which popularised industrial archaeology. The Great Western Society was one of eight finalists selected from 50 entrants for its annual competition in 1970, and this is the introduction filmed at Didcot over the weekend of 5 and 6 December that year, with Magnus Magnusson providing the commentary. The programme was broadcast on 20 Feb...

First steaming of 1466
Переглядів 3594 роки тому
After the Great Western Society had its origins in 1961, it took three years to raise the £750 to buy locomotive No 1466. It was initially delivered to a siding we were able to use in Totnes, Devon. We didn't move to Didcot until November 1967. By 1964 the original four schoolboys (now 19 years old) had been joined by slightly older and more established people on the committee, among them Ken W...

Wheels
Переглядів 1014 роки тому
An 'OO' gauge layout on a bicycle wheel laid horizontally so it is free to turn. It is tilted at a slight angle so the locomotive is always climbing a gradient and in fact the weight of the locomotive makes it stay at the bottom of the gradient and the track turns beneath it. With no centrifugal force, because the locomotive is stationary, it can travel at speed without flying off the curved tr...

Thank you Frank. An absolutely invaluable document of the early days of preservation. 1466 is one of my favorites, especially loved films of her going up to Wallingford in ‘68. I was born 40 odd years after this, I can’t imagine the rush of buying a locomotive from BR and just throwing a fire in it. Thanks to all those of the Great Western Society for all they contribute to the modern Didcot base. Those days in 1964 seem a whole lot brighter.
With the move towards better public transport and the expansion of housing in Wallingford and Benson this line must be a prime candidate for reopening for peak hour services.
If memory serves me right. I drove Blue Peter that day.
Was at The Plough Inn yesterday (Christmas Day) down Tentelow Lane for a quick drink before going on to Osterley Park. Norwood Hall is now a Sikh school! What has happened to London, the capital city of my country England? Why have the traitorous politicians done this. Why have we allowed them to get away with this. 😠😡
Thank you Frank very much for posting this. Growing up in Hanwell but born in 1968 I am too young to have seen steam on the Brentford branch. I used to watch 47s an 08s but this is just gold.
Wallingford station lay derelict until the early 70s when houses were built on it , I can remember walking through what was left of it using it as a short cut to St John's road coming out somewhere near the ABM building....fond memories.
😢
When life was so beautiful and simple
Superb
Full of black heads now
Appreciate this video more than you know! My family lived in Paris around that time - my Dad having accepted a professorship there for the 1962-1963 academic year. I was only 9-10 yrs old but still remember a fair amount - with your video bringing so much of it back. I do remember OAS written everywhere (as an American 9 yr old I didn't have a clue what it meant) but recall gendarmes all over, not like home in the USA at that time. And the open platform busses! Loved them....was so cool to ride in the back. Also the traffic around L'Arc De Triumph. Scared the #&@$ out of me. Anyway, thanks for the post.
Sensational! The film documents how young people of the time were so taken up with Sevens. Luckily so, as so many have been preserved. I got my first Seven four years later in 1970. Thanks for uploading this gem.
This is incredible! Wonder if any footage of Shannon running exists..
This may have been the last "official' working to Wallingford - however, two years later on 9th April 1961, Wallingford was one of the destinations included on the RCTS "Berks & Wilts" rail tour which used a 6-car dmu throughout. If I am correct , Frank Dumbleton is involved with the Great Western Society at Didcot, to whom appreciation is due for providing the opportunity to see this historic and quite extraordinary footage !
Dave :)
Thanks for posting this. Brings back a lot of memories.
The railway as I remember it from when I was a kid. I must have been around when this was happening but as to where I could not say. I am astounded at the number of people along the line, shows how much notice we took of H&S then. Now it would be a nightmare for them. Brought back some happy memories.
Crikey and now its an extension of Southall
I live near Three Bridges so this is fascinating. Thank you! :)
RIP terry jones
Thank you Frank for sharing this gem! I came across it when I loaded a little video about 1466's trip the brarnch in 1966. See it here:ua-cam.com/video/h7GmwmrDbZo/v-deo.html Best Wishes, Bob BIshop
Our family lived at Frogmore 192 Norwood Road at this time. (The property was later demolished to construct flats.) We always looked forward to the Norwood Green Show.
😀
This was almost at the very end. The barge traffic ended very shortly afterwards and Brentford Docks were closed. The railway bridges were then removed from over the A4 and from over the Southern Railway (with which there was no connection) between Brentford & Syon Lane stations. Brentford Docks had been built by the Great Western Railway and the Southern were kept out.
absolutely brilliant,i volunteer at the great cockcrow railway, and its amazing of what rolling stock and locos it still has
