  • Lyrics:
    In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, honey,
don't you know that I love you?
    In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, baby,
don't you know that I'll always be true?
Oh, won't you come with me
    and take my hand?
Oh, won't you come with me
    and walk this land?
    Please take my hand!
    In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, honey,
don't you know that I love you?
    In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, baby,
don't you know that I'll always be true?
Oh, won't you come with me
    and take my hand?
Oh, won't you come with me
    and walk this land?
    Please take my hand!
    In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, honey,
don't you know that I love you?
    In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, baby,
don't you know that I'll always be true?
Oh, won't you come with me
    and take my hand?
Oh, won't you come with me
    and walk this land?
    Please take my hand!

I can remember as a kid, way back in the 90's, this was the first vinyl record I ever listened to. My dad put it on a turntable and cranked it up. I still remember sitting on the couch holding the LP sleeve and looking at the cover trying to figure what the circular blobs of color melting together meant. I had no idea psychedelic rock was at that point in life but I sure did like what I was hearing. This was my glorious introduction to 60's/ 70's rock. Little did I know this one song was just the very tip of the iceberg.

Vinyl passed down from me mother. Grandmother saw a talented young jazz drummer play this catchy tune on Ed Sullivan show and wrote a letter inquiring. TV program sent her the LP. Upon listening, declared it of the devil and pitched it in the rubbish. My mother retrieved this wonderful piece of music. Thanks for the upload.

The drumming was my favorite part of the song. My brother and I both played drums and we would get together and try our best to copy it. Not to bad sometimes. Miss you bro.

During September 1968, a group toured Scandinavia as "The New Yardbirds", performing some old Yardbirds material as well as new songs such as "Communication Breakdown", "I Can't Quit You Baby", "You Shook Me", "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" and "How Many More Times". The month after they returned to England, October 1968, Jimmy Page changed the band's name to Led Zeppelin, and the group entered Olympic Studios in London to record their debut album. IRON BUTTERFLY's "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", the title track of their second album, became a Top 30 hit (edited down to 2:52) in the US and made the number 9 spot on the Dutch Top 40. The album was awarded a gold disc by the R.I.A.A. in December 1968 and had sold over three million copies by the end of 1970. It ultimately sold over 20 million copies, went platinum, and stayed on the Billboard magazine charts for over a year. HA! The original "Heavy Metal" after IRON BUTTERFLY

That is what legend states, and you are very possibly right. Doug Ingle (the lead vocalist of this classic) stated he simply could not keep up with the song's pace so he improvised the pronunciation. Gee! I wonder why? LOL

+Rockonrick51 interesting thought,,, BUT a good Latin translation of "In a Gadda Da Vida" is "In THE Garden, of Life". That is to say the garden of Eden, so that seems to be the best explanation of the title, not the drugie one.

it's unfortunate for all of those who never heard the vinyl version of this composition. during the drum solo, double-track phasing (or flanging) is introduced, giving the drums that unique whooshing sound, the same type sound as heard after jimi's guitar solo on "axis: bold as love", or the small faces' "itchycoo park", status quo's "pictures of matchstick men", or the ending arpeggios from shuggie otis' guitar on his version of "strawberry letter 22". it's too bad that today's analog-to-digital transfers have technologically reduced the original phased (or flanged) strength to barely perceptible on this version as well as all of the youtube offerings of this 17 minute classic from 1968 - so far. but, from the comments it would appear that the song can still hold court, minus the intended enhanced production.

Actually, Doug Ingle wrote the song while drinking a gallon of Red Mountain wine. When he played the song for Bushy (who was writing down the lyrics) he slurred his words so badly that Bushy interpreted "in the Garden of Eden" as "In-A-Godda-Da-Vida" ... and it stuck.

Top 5 for sure. Off of the top of my head Moby Dick gives this one a good run for the money. I understand personal preference. That being said, I like Moby Dick better. In no way, shape, or form am I saying that I don’t like this song. It is just incredible. You may also take a look at a song called Hocus Pocus by Focus. It’s interesting and talented for its time. And a Welsh band called the Budgies. I hope you check them out and enjoy!!

I would also like to add that, in my opinion Bonhams solo is much more structured. And if you were going by bpm... Moby Dick would take the cake
