My favorite part about GSP is how I win and gain 100,000 and then don't win, and lose 300,000 effectively making it where I have to win 3x just to compensate for 1 loss, (this is another reason why no one rematches anyone it's a risk reward thing, the risk of losing has a way bigger punishment then the reward of winning, so if someone beats someone they don't want to rematch them). I was playing Byleth once and this other guy was playing Falcon and we both beat each other the same amount of times but left with our GSP tanked as a result effectively getting punished for rematching each other as many times as we did, (still haven't been able to recover from that because if I lose 5 times I have to win 15 times to get all that GSP back).

I cannot allow GSP to get in the way of my growth and my fun. Thank you, Red, for reminding me of that. As someone who has been hanging at 2,000,000 GSP for awhile, this reminds me that there are a lot of things outside of my control, and I should focus on the two things I can control: my character and my attitude.

I'm sure you know already, but I just wanna remind you that GSP doesn't define how good you are. It's just a tool that the system uses and has its faults like any system. As someone who is in Elite Smash with DDD and close to 12 million GSP, I still understand this sentiment. Trying to get Dr. Mario into the higher ranks is hard. But, something I learned is that...GSP is a system that helps pair me up to players of similar skill to me. When I lose as Doc, I say to myself, "Looks like I still have to iron out some of my play." DDD has been my main since Smash 4, so I got him into Elite Smash very easily, and I've kept him in it since the game came out. I've even continued to climb slowly. But for those of you who are trying someone new, don't be discouraged. Instead, set smaller goals for yourself. If you are around 4 million GSP, then aim for 8 million GSP instead of Elite. Elite Smash's number grows, so it's hard to gauge how much you need in order to reach it. It constantly fluctuates. So, make self goals with numbers you feel you can attain. Doing so will make you feel much more accomplished.
As for GSP... Despite the good parts of it, it's honestly still an awful system. I think a big part of that is due to a lack of good alternatives to do competitive quick-play. Smash 4 actually did this right. You could play For Glory, and...it was simple. No numbers, just fight other serious players, that's all. I don't think people would mind GSP if it was under a different mode called something like "Smash Ranking". Then the other modes would be For Fun and For Glory. Arenas try to capture this idea, but they are only as reliable as the player hosting it is. Plus, if you end up being considered too skilled, they often boot you from the arena.
One last thing. When it comes to making a ranking system, I honestly think Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has the right idea. It's been awhile since I've played, but the way you earn points is rather generous, and I never felt it to be that frustrating, cause, well...there's no elite rank or anything, it's really just based on what you want to achieve yourself. I think if Smash were to base their GSP system of MK8DX's, then I believe the system would be much more pleasant for folks. Naturally, the higher your score, the more skilled you are presumed to be. You'd naturally be paired up with other high point players. If you get 3 stocked by someone, then you're gonna lose a hefty amount of points, but if you are going even and lose, you'll lose a small amount of points. If you win by a good margin, then you'll get a good amount of points. Ideally, it means over time, a modest amount of people's points would eventually get to a pretty high level, like in Mario Kart. Some may not like this, but I think if you make the point cap so high that it would be unlikely to ever reach it, then nobody would ever all be in the same point range.
I'm just throwing ideas around in the end. In any case, that was a good video, and I feel it is needed.

It's funny, technically Splatoon and TETRIS 99 have better ways of going about this! In both of those, you reach certain conditions, and unlock an entirely separate mode with separate ways of ranking. You can still play the other modes, they don't get replaced. (Invictus with Tetris 99 and X Battle for Splatoon 3.)

Thank you so much for this, it helped me a lot. Lately I've been really frustrated with smash online. I work hard to get better, and then I lose a couple of matches and my gsp drops like crazy. I try to learn matchups, and learn to read bad habits, but it's basically impossible because nobody rematches. I always fight toxic, laggy, spammy players that have wack rulesets who use Ness, Lucas, Young Link, Belmonts, Samus etc. They cheese you, T-bag, and then leave after one match. Also even if the game was really really close, and you lose, your gsp drops immensely! So some nights I can lose a lot of games by a hair, super close matches, both equally skilled, but I get punished really hard!

With respect to online mode, this is the best video I've watched. By far.
Sure, you don't teach advanced techniques for each specific characters. But look at me. I watched and analyzed countless times the best matches of the best players with Donkey Kong (my main) and I'm even able to perform some complicated moves and tricks yet I can't go beyond 400,000 (started the game 1 month ago). I practiced against LvL9 CPU and against some I do well. Against real people, I lose too often, I play badly, do tons of mistakes, can't hit accurately, or predict well obvious behaviours that I know they do and repeat etc.
I believe knowledge is very easy to get, go watch YT. The hardest part is just experience, which I lack. But before getting enough experience, your mindset can hold you back, if you always lose and see your score going down constantly, feeling like you're trash and you feel never to play online again, which then prevents you from getting experience.
So, yes you summed up perfectly. We shouldn't let the score and past failure condition our mindset. This game is really fun and it's sad such details dictate our decision to keep playing or not. We shouldn't let this happen.

Quick Play would be objectively better in every measure if GSP didn't exist and it just kept track of how many matches you've won with every given character. You'd see ONE number go up, and that's it. I know you can argue 'but muh matchmaking,' but...come on. GSP is already a terrible matchmaking system. It might as well not exist imo. I am currently 'ladder grinding,' attempting to get every character in Elite. Ya know. Three years after the game came out. Sooo, it's been...weird. And interesting. And fun and frustrating at the same time, since it's been forcing me to learn more about every character in the game. I'm actually getting pretty close, but I'm treating it the arbitrary numerical accomplishment it is, not a degree of skill, exactly. A goal to shoot for. Once I've attained that goal, I will gladly never care about GSP ever again, it's a terrible system that defeats its own purpose.

1: online is laggy and has people learn to take advantage of that instead of actually trying to get better

I rarely do quick play anymore I'd always stress out about losing GSP. Not making it to Elite Smash it can really lower your self esteem & make you second guess yourself if you're a great smash player. Elite smash is a great achievement don't get me wrong but i just do arena battles with friends I've met on discord & honestly battling people that are better that you helps yourself grow as a better player. I'm a Peach & Lucario main & i thought I was the shit with Peach & Lucario til I saw better Peach & Lucario players doing combos so i friended them on discord & voice called them to help teach me Peach & Lucario combs & tech. Imma hella lot better I can beat the ones that taught me so downloading discord & making friends on their is another way to improve they'll be willing to help you get better. Just hoping in arenas with people you know takes off so much stress & worry about your GSP & trying to get into elite smash. If you feel like you've improved jump on quick play & do a few matches. In conclusion nothings better than battling against friends & just having fun while getting better. Also watching top pro smash players that use your main/s isnt a bad thing either you can see stuff they do to & watching UA-cam vids on learing tech & combos with your main/s helps a lot to practice in training mode to get good at learning conbos & tech but thats just from my personal expirence & advice. ( a little advice most public arenas that you might hop into can have the persons discord as the name of their arena great way to start the making friends on discord part. )BTW out of all the Peach players i know I'm the only one that uses default settings LOL 😂

Im only getting into elite for the laughs, I’m a Robin player with joycons, im not getting anywhere outside online, I always play for fun and while yes I feel bad by loosing GSP and I always need to get it back I still have fun and recognize genuinely good players

  • @curtisplays21

Sometimes goals are all that matter, I wanna play low tiers, I love playing low tiers. I get mad sometimes, but other times I'll stop taking the game seriously, I'll get destroyed and laugh about it, in the end, I think GSP is helpful for giving me a challenge. With GSP and me deciding to use low tiers, it means every fight can be a challenge, even if it should be easy, and that's fun. It's fun to have to think strategically sometimes, I can make comebacks, I can think cleverly, and it all depends on what your mindset is. It's hard to keep yourself from getting mad, but if you just goof around, you'll find you can think more clearly then getting mad over getting killed. If you wanna have fun, make it harder for yourself, you'll get better so quickly, and it's way easier to have fun doing it since you know how likely it is for you to lose.

You should make a video about the idea of constantly worrying about your skill level in offline smash. Like making PR in your city or state and even having a good season but then tanking in rankings the next season. How can you deal with it?

    • @redgerran
      @redgerran  2 роки тому

Honestly, it's all about perspective. That happens sometimes. Even top players lose to people below their skill level. Heck, when MKLeo wins, half the times he's in losers bracket and down 0-2. It's all about picking yourself up and trying again. Be thankful you're not a pro athlete where a bad season could mean never getting the chance to play again.

I started playing online a month ago since I kinda get bored playing against CPU’s. I sometimes win, I sometimes don’t. I’ve been trying to play as other characters and I’m pretty good with them, I played as Kirby, Chrom, Samus, Ridley. And I don’t think GSP matters either. Some of the characters I played as are already at 9 million(Terry, Banjo and Kazooie and peach). Over the summer I’ve gotten pretty better competitively, but what makes me upset is the mistakes I make like when I use the wrong move for Hero and end up losing.

I don't think this video applies to me. I can't get in Elite even with cheese and gimmicks and I've already given up on it. I can tank my GSP with a character without even trying to lose. Especially with a character with inflated GSP that doesn't reflect my skill level. It does me no good to keep characters with inflated GSP around. items and wacky rulesets is how I have fun. I only use competitive rulesets when I'm trying to guage skill and it's not fun for me but sometimes I just have to know where my GSP stabilizes with those kinds of rules with certain characters.

Yes here is more advice get better internet connection so you and your opponent don’t leg so much.
If your switch dock sucks and goes black after an hour play smash in hand held mode.
Don’t like using joycons or have drift try getting detachable pro controller or just kick stand it and use your normal controller!
If you use the GameCube controller still buy a new dock or wait for switch 2!

The only reason why you should care about GSP is people using the wacky ruleset tactic. I’m talking 2:30 minutes time battle, one stock 7:00 minutes, 3:00 minutes 3 stocks and camp to either run the timer and pray no one realizes they are a stock ahead or pray they win the sudden death that will definitely happen, whatever it is, usually these people use characters that are projectile-based, so use someone with a projectile and reflecter like Zelda or mewtwo and try your best

No one rematches me cause I play Mac:'(. But yeah I stopped carrying about gsp and it really improved my mentality. What I do now is just focus on a certain technique or a certain combo ect. That I want to work on. I'm tanking my gsp rn bc I decided to learn a new control setup and idc that my gsp is dropping bc I'm just focused on improvement. Also discord matches help me out but that isn't convenient all the time

2 years ago elite smash requirements were set at 10 mil. Today, i dont know, because as soon as i got kicked with all characters they all tanked, and ive never got back in to this day.
GSP does matter to a degree. If around 2m near the threshold yoy get quality matches. If you tank it thiugh prepare to go through a ton of 1v1s with item spamming and a ton more rage quitting than what you would normally see at the top. You drop too low you need a 75% win rate to climb. Staying at 50% this low will tank it even further. Lowest GSP i had was 1mil with Pichu, and it was hell to climb.
Do i care much about it now? No. As long as it's not a pure 1v1 room i can climb with another stranger. If we get off with each other during a free for all I would discreetly manipulate matches keeping things close, so that no one suspect a thing. Sometimes, I would purposely lose against them in a 1v1 in order to raise their score up. Sometimes, i would outright kill them to kill any doubt of bullying. I don't feel like getting banned again for the simple fact that i won a 1v1 against a salty player on a ffa that everyone decided to have. Anyways, the pure reason for all of this is for them to have fun. We both climb, we eventually attractive better players, they hit their limit before they quit after 2 hours of climbing, we become friends on the switch. Recently i have gotten someone up from 4 mil to 9 mil before they tanked back to 6. Meanwhile, i went from 8 mil to 10 mil being discreet and not making a scene.
