I just wish the trend for everything behind touchscreen controls would go away
Looks like from 2026 car manufacturers will not get 5 star safety NCAP rating in EU if they omit physical buttons and require touchscreen operation while driving.
The better trend would be reversing all that SUV, Crossover, Profit making madness
Good review....thanks for the upload. Collecting my silver MG3 Hybrid+ next week :)
Felicidades
Me too. A silver excite in two weeks
This is what the fiesta could have been, Ford have really walked away from this segment and Europe in general.
Their loss will hopefully be MG's gain.
How is it 192bhp? Also, we need more cars like these , not the 80kw plus battery EV 2 tonne SUVs
MG3 hybrid Kerb weight is 1685kg so it's fairly close to a large EV Crossover/SUV such as the Tesla Model Y which is 1985kg kerb. The Model Y is significantly larger and has way more space and power. MG3 is actually 260kg heavier than a Corolla hatch hybrid @1410kg
@@GreenTorque. Why is it so heavy? Just checked - seems to be just over 1300kg, am I missing something?
@@GreenTorque MG3 Hybrid kerb weight is 1298kg (se) or 1308 kg (trophy).not sure where you got your figures, my figures are from MG site.
@@bordersw1239 No GreenTorque has it wrong....MG3 Hybrid kerb weight is only 1298 kg (se)or 1308kg (trophy)
Great review, if this is the beginning of more cheaper vehicles bring it on. I can see why the old manufacturers are worried and will probably want to force extra taxes on these to support their own vehicles.
I went inside the new MG3 Hybrid+ in my local showroom; pretty well equipped and for me doesn’t feel cheap. However, I don’t like the fact that it doesn’t have split-folding rear seats unlike the outgoing MG3 (which wasn’t available in Ireland).
I agree about the seats!
It would be awful to make such a practical and affordable car these days, think of corporate profits. They need to engineer some shortfalls to get people to pay more
@@GreenTorque The weird thing is that the previous generation MG3 had the split-folding seats, but not the new one. But apparently this issue will be fixed in the near future, according to some guy who works at an MG dealer as a sales advisor.
@@DaveDVideoMaker I wouldn't trust car Salesmen, he's just speculating. They haven't got a clue what decisions are being made for production lines
Thank you for this comprehensive review. There was a comparison between swift and mg3 on the "what car" channel. Interestingly, the new swift consumes less fuel. Probably because it is lighter, but shouldn't we expect better fuel efficiency from a full hybrid car? They even found the new swift more successful in many ways. What is your general opinion?
The Swift is hard to beat for heaps of reasons. It also has over 100bhp less, hard to compare them for efficiency
TBH, I was really expecting MUCH, MUCH MORE by way of fuel economy from the MG3 Hybrid+. It's becoming clear now from all the various reviews that are emerging, that the claimed 64 mpg is strictly for the birds & 55 mpg is sort of where reality lies. It strikes me that any gains the MG3 designers hoped to make from all the clever tech they've installed have been negated by the (considerable!) extra weight said tech adds to the vehicle. The real life fuel economy of the new Suzuki Swift is comparable to that of the MG3. It's far less 'clever' but it is 350 kg lighter & that matters!
I’m sure better can be achieved but it would have to be a more gentle driver than me. I saw Auto Express got the very same though!
Had mine almost 3 weeks..do a mixture of city.rural and motorway each day..averaging just about 60 mpg spot on.Even longer journeys was getting over 64 mpg.(50 mile plus)..i keep it in eco mode with strongest number 3 regeneration braking and auto speed enabled.
@@FéargalO I filled up my eight year old Suzuki Celerio yesterday & did my usual fuel economy check. 479.5 miles on 30.01 litres of petrol works out at 72.66 mpg! The long term average on the trip computer says 71.4 mpg & it has been edging up recently, which is normal in summer. Petrol costs £1.39.9 at the Jet garage around the corner, so right now, I'm paying 8.75p/mile (not far off EV territory!). I did 3,360 miles last year so my fuel bill is a mere £317/year. I know I need to buy a new car at some point because this one won't last forever but for me, getting an MG3, a Swift or any EV is going to feel like a step backwards.
Thanks for such an honest review
Prices of MG3 across EU starts at 19990 EUR. MG4 starts at 30990.
ZS is now even cheaper ...16490 in Germany and i think it's best valeue for money car in EU. HS starts at 22900 EUR.
It would be epic if they could offer MG3 with that basic 1.5L engine from ZS with starting price arround 13-14000 EUR since all cars in that class (Clio, Fabia, Corsa) are now extremly overpriced.
they won't, annual tax on that 1.5 automatic would be too high. thats why we'll only see electric/hybrid cars, that means no more cheap cars here- 23000 is a new 13000
More BHEV please. Less PHEV, just turns me off the car [my opinion obviously]
If there was more BHEV options I'd leave the full blown ICE behind
Great looking car btw and great review as always
Let's be honest with ourselves, Hybrids with limited (without plug) battery capacity are less capable by default
Good review as always Mark. Interesting that they added an extra level for the Irish Market. Dacia did the opposite for the Sandero.
7:07 As an update Mark, based on your review, I test drove one of these and it is everything you say. Drives well if you keep it smooth and steady. It was enough for me to order one.
Gracias por el vídeo, un saludo desde el sur de España.
Great value for the money...at last
Brilliant review as ever Nobby and nice to hear the economy in mpg for us in the North tho' I usually go to Google to convert it from l/100km to mpg should that be the case. Fabulous wee car for the money, the only sting in the tail as i see it is the insurance group which at between 23 and 24 is higher than my Corolla hybrid sport tourer and it only has about 13hp less at 180.
Did you move the Renault on?!
@@NobbyOnCars I did aye, I now have a Toyota Corolla hybrid sport tourer Trek model which is the slightly jacked up version and mine is the special edition which means it has bigger alloys than the standard Trek and leather interior instead of cloth in the standard Trek.
I have a feeling they will have to discount this for it to sell well to UK customers as the Cloi will give it a good run for the money as will the Swift just the use of a 3 speed Auto I find a trifle baffling whats it like trying to drive enthusiastically?
What might save it is the limited competition but other Chinese brands might step into the market yet.
A Clio with this spec in Ireland is €34,000
@NobbyOnCars To be fair a more basic spec Clio might be a better purchase over the long term though I see the Swift as a more likely rival.
Was just watching a WHAT CAR (it's on tube) review n comparison test with a Suzuki Swift and the MG didn't perform very well in the economy side things
It's annoying they fitted the rain sensor in the most expensive trim only. What does it cost, €5-10 at most?
Why would you need a rain sensor in Ireland ? It's always raining, just leave the wipers on 😅
It looks bigger than the new swift mark, is it?
A little. Main comparison is the closeness in price
Thanks mark, what do you think about the new korando? Love the reviews, great help when it comes to ruling in or out 👍
Cant find it on the MG website
www.mg.ie/mg3/
hybrid insurance is still expensive
Not all hybrids are built the same, Toyota's patent protected eCVTs are hard to beat
But then again, the last few years for Toyota's lineup such as the Yaris, Yaris Cross, CHR, Prius etc are seriously faff beyond measure.
What's rhe point in making a more efficient, updated drivetrain only to negate the gains with needless posh items, larger and wider wheels and/or SUV styling? Just for profit?
There’s no denying Toyota’s credentials as a pioneer of hybrid but their prices can’t really match this offering.
Lads. This car only does 55mpg in real world. Not bad but not really moving this on...plug in or little diesel supermini
55 mpg is fantastic compared to most ice cars before
crazy , why did'nt they use the petrol engine as a generator like the old bmw i3 rex much better than this
It does sort of. 5 modes, one of them the ice charges the battery
@@phillharris3154 there is no useful battery to charge as it is less than 2 kw
@@whocares264 this 1.8 battery means ev mode most of the time in suburban traffic. It works great.
I'm sure its fine for non -car people, but for anyone else ..Ho-Hum, vin ordinaire.
Bro your graphic on the thumbnail is wrong…
Thank you!
Another great review, so please note this comment is about MG only! The reason this is ‘so cheap’ (at 23k!) in comparison is because China offers state-supported subsidies to advantage their manufacturers over established brands. These ‘advantages’ include below-market credit, tax cuts by local (to China) regional governments, and preferential rates on land leases. The EU is investigating these due to concerns about state-level unfair advantages.
Most of us are aware but most people really don’t give a fiddlers as long as they’re getting a car that they can finally afford.
But then don't governments give buyers tax breaks etc for EVs
The British government doled out subsidies to our car industry for decades! Great gobs of cash were blown on British Leyland, the Rootes plant at Linwood to build the Hillman Imp & who can forget the money pit that was the DeLorean plant in NI?? Us criticising the Chinese is the pot calling the kettle black!
Toyota is tested reliable car maker, this mg? Who knows
You make a very good point, it's gonna be nowhere near as reliable as a Toyota.
However Toyota's are SO reliable that other car brands that are less reliable can still be reliable enough, if that makes sense 😅 I mean it doesn't have to be one extreme or the other, either hyper-reliable or not reliable at all, there's a spectrum in between.
MG do back it up with a 7 year warranty. Not as good as Toyota's 10 year warranty, but better than a lot of other brands. Most brands have so little faith in their own reliability that they only offer a 3 year warranty.
Now in Australia MG have a 10 year warranty @@speakatron5634
seems ok but id imagine toyota would last bit longer and would have much better trade in.
Undoubtedly
Hybrid = Toyota
Looks more like a hyundai than anything else
It’s no more efficient than a non-hybrid - go buy a Suzuki Swift - more efficient, has a split filing rear seat and adjustable steering wheel. More reliable
But suzuki doesn't have 200bhp
Biased review..Your boot segment didn't mention the seats don't split fold..And being taller than you I found no steering wheel reach adjustment alone ruled it out..Plus the steering column shook when you slammed the drivers door shut..It's noisy on the motorway too which I guess doesn't matter to you unless you have friends in Belfast..UK's What Car just rated the Swift a better buy..Just bought an Hyundai i20 instead which for a couple of grand more blows it away in every department bar fuel economy and acceleration but the real world differences are way smaller than claimed..Also Hyundai have binned off the hybrid gimmick so servicing is cheaper and only the engine not electric motors and interfaces to worry about..If that's jerky now, what about 5 years down the road ?
So it’s biased because I didn’t drop some seats? Go and do one 🙄
Ridiculous comparison review by What car, a smaller manual Suzuki against a bigger automatic MG with massive increase in bhp. Can't take that site seriously or the reviewer .
@@FéargalO similar price in Ireland though
