- www.premierguitar.com/Video/20... Premier Guitar's Rebecca Dirks is on location in Des Moines, IA, where she catches up with Between the Buried and Me guitarists Dustie Waring and Paul Waggoner who walk us through their rigs that include PRS Guitars, Fractal Audio Axe-Fx units, Mesa/Boogie power amps, and a few effects pedals from Port City and Wampler.

He hit the nail on the head, with the "losing the player" thing with EMG's.
I think it's interesting to note that when it was first developed, the neck position of the guitar was for rhythm playing, and the brighter bridge position was for lead playing. Now a lot of rhythm players are using the bridge pickup exclusively and the lead players are switching between the bridge and neck positions.
OMG yes I was so waiting for this!
We tried to get something with Mike, but unfortunately doors were opening soon and they still hadn't soundchecked, so we will have to wait until Russian Circles heads out on the road headlining some shows because we want Mike and Brian to demo their rigs during the video.
Thanks for watching,
Paul, musically,. You complete me. Cant wait to jump you out back after the show.
nonsense, friend. dustie has some of the best tone i've ever heard. axe-fx into a mesa tube power amp is the best combo out there. it doesnt get better than that :P
4:02 "Dank Ass Chunk" lol haha love it
Matt, i am a kiwi, i live in Aussie now but used to live in Charlotte. I never saw them in the 5 years i lived in NC but i saw them in oz in november 12. I met them all but Blake after their set and they are very down to earth. No egos i could see. Just friendly, one equal to another.
There's a banjo part in Lay Your Ghosts?? o.O why have I not noticed this?
Dustie and Paul are such cool guys. I had no idea Port City was out of NC though. I'm going to have to check them out.
It's great to see that you guys are finally using lapel mics. The voice recording is so much better now.
On guitar strings, the G, B and high E don't have any windings on them, so it's essentially just the string core, though you can get sets with a wound G, which is what he's reffering to.
Andrew Walls the JSX and XXX rule so much more than people even realize! A really cool trick you may dig with these amps to get that "dirty" clean is to use an eq pedal as a gain reducer and shaper on the crunch channel. Pull back the output abunch and do a slightly smiley shape on the eq with the gain down fairly low on the channel ( what you would normal have for rhythm stuff ). Works sooooo great for me for an incredible blues jazz tone. Also an Exotic EP in the loop is amazing! Tight.
Black Hawk pickups are great until someone asks you how they're called.
"Dude I love Black Hawks."
I'd play them, just because I'm a huge fan of the hockey team.
Mitch Baker big black hawks
dank ass chunk haha i enjoyed that.
I guess I've never noticed that. Since I started playing 8 years ago, almost every set of strings I've ever owned have been large-gauge strings. Naturally, the G was usually round-wound automatically for the sake of the size, I play a 24 gauge.
Gotta love the wound G string, they sound way more consistent IMO.
I cant stand a non wound G, they sound like shit
It's crazy to me that they're so hard to find. I've had multiple stores tell me they don't sell them individually. Baloney!
Oh awesome! I use Standard C# as my main Tuning...Time to learn some BtBaM songs
People need to understand that it's the individual musician's choice and preference to use as much or as little gear as they want. It all depends on what they want or need. I see all these comments about rig size and it just annoys me at how much people want to act like they're the greatest musician alive based on their rigs. How about instead of fighting over who uses what you accept that everyone is different and it's not your place to tell someone their rig is bad or good.
Finally they gave the interviewee a lav! - YES!!
If that works for you then that's great! Others, we like our gear, we like our effects, we like to color and texture and layer our sounds. It takes all kinds.
Thank God someone else that actually prefers a standard tuning over a drop tuning.
Tripp Stewart to be fair... their “standard tuning” is still a step and a half down.
I saw that on Rebecca's twitter a couple of days. Funny as hell xD
Does anyone have any tips to achieve their rhythm tones on the Axe FX 2? Their tone is seriously the prime guitar tone. The mids, warmth, and creamy-ness of their tone is so good.
Uriah Graves I can't help you with Axe FX settings but I know Paul has often said they get their tone by keeping the amp (Dustie mentioned Mesa and Soldano for distortion settings) gain at a minimum (somewhere around 7 or 8 o'clock) and "saturating" the preamp tone with a boost pedal. Paul once mentioned using a TS808 as a boost for leads on The Great Misdirect, probably mostly clean with a little dirt added in. However here Dustie mentions their boost pedal adding fatness to the tone, so that may be part of it. They also boost the mids to cut through the mix. I would guess more on the high-mid end. I'm not sure if its pre or post but I have had better luck with pre. And that's the gist of it. As far as I can tell the main difference between their rhythm and lead tones is the amount of boost.
These guys know their gear down to the individual string sizes - I like that.
Amazing how they are able to get such a big sound with a very low key setup those midi controllers must help out big time
this guy is hilarious. nice setup. I like how some of the pros still use the older axe fx models. I think I heard meshuggah uses an older model axe fx too and I could be wrong, but I think dino cazares
still uses a pod hd pro. There are many ways to get tones that work for you.
Last time I saw them, I caught a Dunlop Jazz iii from Paul. Not sure what Dusty uses though.
Please!! The Offspring's rig rundown!!
Did you guys do one for Russian Circles, too? Also, I love Coheed's mannequins creeping in the background.
Yea, I'm glad that you don't need all those extra add ons to your sound and that you can just save on some cash, but for us guitarist and musician, who enjoy experiment and evolve their tone and sound every album, EP and or band, we need those effect pedals. If you like sounding the same for every band and album you've done, you can't really blame the fans for getting bored of your music.
Analog VS Digital is this : Digital has the ability to control the lower frequencies of instruments a lot better than most analog pieces of equipment can hence why most bass amps are either digital or solid state but as we know the mids and highs sound glassy or unremarkable analog represents mid-range very well along with the highs but when dealing with the outside conditions the sounds change based on whats going on outside of the device BOTH devices represent BOTH spectrum's in their own way
Seriously, I think we all want a Jack white Rig Rundown. I would be happy as can be to see that pop up on my subscriptions one day.
Paul is a master shredder and don’t sleep on Dustie! Dude is a master shredder as well. Don’t forget that he and Blake were in Glass Casket killing it before BTBAM which I love as well. Glass Casket still gets heavy play in my world today. Their custom PRS guitars are near flawless. I say that because everyone has their own custom wants but I don’t think I would change anything other than taking the Floyd off of Dustie’s. I’m not a locking fan. To each their own though.
You guys should shut up about how many pedals musicians should use and simply admire how badass and chill Paul and Dustie are.
He means it has winds around it...as opposed to most g strings which are just a single wire...his has a core and then more wire wrapped around it like a typical E A and D string.
Anyone know if he uses the alnico version or the ceramic version of those blackhawks?
Gojira rig rundown, please!
Include the drums too :D
Does anyone know the exact combo of pickups Dustie uses now? Its not just the D-Activator Neck/Bridge anymore. Dimarzio's site says he uses the Norton and ToneZone, and the PAF 36th Anniversary Neck/Bridge.
Much like Dustie I've been an avid fan of EMG for a long time but I'm ready to try something different...might check out those Bare Knuckles BlackHawks.
Dan's rig was right there! Couldn't they give him some love too?
Bring back Rebecca Dierks!
she ain't coming back, blame the perverts wanting to "See her rig"
Please do a rig rundown for Enter Shikari :D
Objection. Most music in our church isn't boring. I LOVE hymns mostly for the music. Good lyrics too, but I'm mostly musically attracted to them. Music from that age has a different feel to it that I like. Also Lincoln Brewster is a rock guy. He plays a strat and has some pretty rad solos in his music. Definitely not boring. But, 'nyways, I was actually talking to a guy from another church who's a tube guy and he actually agreed that Axe-FX was as good as a tube amp. He has a Bogner.
I am one of that guy running guitar->amp, but hell if I'd like to run a Fender for cleans, a Vox for Crunch and my Marshall for high gain stuff. So as I don't want to carry more than 150 kg in gear I'm saving for an AxeFX.
creativity.
Did you guys find out what picks they use?
you're right i'll have to back up what I say. deff can't compete with your impeccable references
"a guy i know from another church that agrees with me"
You should def check out The Parallax II (their newest album). Astral Body, Silent Flight Parliament, and Extremophile Elite are some awesome songs. Even if you don't like Metalcore (like me), it's worth a listen.
I agree. I've restored a crappy garage sale guitar with EMG 81's and it completely saved an otherwise awful guitar. But I still agree with what Dusty said.
omg finally
what band you in and when is ur next album coming out?
but it's so convenient! I wish I had an axe effects unit!
You can tell Paul is a super nice guy.
Finally :D
You can tell he's a real player by his name :P
alex lifeson does not use a prs with a floyd his black ce one is stock so is his blue cu one and his singlecut. he has one that has different pups in it from his signature guitar but no floyd. he uses floyd's on his axcess les pauls. ive seen videos with paul saying they are pointless and they are i don't care what pros do anyways. if they all played with first acts i guess you would line up at wal mart to get one
dank.
@DMSProduktions a lot of people k ow BTBAM and I feel like most fans would be interested in this.
And what venues have you played?...
i wasn't saying narrow minded about the production values being a large factor, more that AC/DC dont have a good sound, its a great classic rock sound, you may not like it doesn't mean its bad
Yes, so why don't they both go with lapel mics?
Please do Halestorm?? Or Vintage trouble?! :D
who would've said they are using Axe-Fx
Imma go ahaid and say it. Rebecca Dirks is beautiful.
You should check out Virus from Dope's rig rundown. Very straight forward. All that stuff is nice, but only people with several thousands of dollars own this stuff.
How come you guy's don't do a rundown on the Drums??
All you need is a wah, distortion/overdrive pedal if your amp has a bad gain sound, sometimes a delay and MAYBE a compressor, that's it. A les paul and a marshall is all you need. If you think you need a whole pedal board, then maybe you're the amatuer.
God I'm juvenile... Giggled like a goddamn school girl each time he said Black Hawk...
Please do one for Stone Sour.
I'm not talking about the midi, that thing is actually cool. I hadn't seen the whole video so I just assumed he had a bunch of random pedals. Nevermind. But still there is nothing wrong with just a guitar and an amp, that's the best way to go if you have a nice amp and nice guitar.
I'm glad somebody else gives their presets silly names ^_^
not me a prs with a floyd is a boat anchor
Yeah your tone sounds amazing in your Iced Earth cover ... -.-
3:50 "dank as chunk"
depends on the genre.
I'm not even sure what you guys are arguing about anymore. Both players have interesting setups and both Dustie and Paul are highly dope in general.
All Rig Rundowns MUST include a sound sample hows that sound! Rebecca?
Hey, could you do a rundown of Killswitch Engage please?
You can tell he's a real player by the words "Strat-y" and "LesPaul-ish" haha.
fuck yeah!
Amen. :P
HAHAHA at 2:30, the cameraman shoots the board instead of the pedal. I also thought he pointed to the board
Need that Line 6 wireless. NAO.
Yeah that works if you're a guitarist in a normal every day local band, but if you're playing in large theaters and clubs every night then you're gonna need a bunch of effects to sound good in front of thousands of people.
Does he have a burnmark on the right side of his face/head?
is paul using the 1x12s?
Eldrad must live!
Dude, how many of these have you watched and they say that? Being good is a given, these are internationally successful guitarists in high grossing bands. I know what you're saying; don't hide behind effects, but varying tone is entertaining and something an audience is subconsciously thankful for. An hour+ set with one tone would be boring as shit, no one does that.
They need to lower Dustie's Seroquil a little bit, dude sounds like he's barley awake. And sidenote I have to comment how these guys are from me home town on every Btbam video... carry on. I had to come back I was wondering why Paul's voice sounded so familiar, He sounds like Bill Hader's Character from Hot Rod.
cool story, bro.
And exactly what drmoshie said. I'm absolutely not an elitist. I'm simply pointing out the broken logic in your comment. If you only watched it to get rid of the thumbnail in your subscriptions, which is what I assume you did, then why did you bother to comment?
wuhuu Rebecca Dirk ;)
Where was Dan Briggs in all this?
Nice shoes Becca :)
no Dan Briggs rig??? :(
Kevin Shields (my bloody valentine) rundown would be sweet!
agreed crazy may be an understatement though how bout clinically insane
Gojira Rig rundown!!!
Yes well, i can imagine that the thing would work pretty fine ;). It was more a comment about having quite "screwed" the character of the guitar!
tool had schism played widely on network radio....
