They shortened the theme song like when Samurai Jack Season 5 had the end credits shortened up and same with The Fairly OddParents where in season 10 the end credits theme was shortened. This is nothing really that new, man! It's a recent trend that networks take to avoid spending too much money on the opening credits! Though I do wish it was longer, I do like the new theme song, they didn't get rid of the iconic Jack Elliot-composed theme, which is great! It's like the new title sequence of Law and Order starting with Season 21 where it combines the two previous themes into a new, darker, more dramatic, intense theme! People forget that the Original Night Court's first two episodes were rough as well. Not to mention it had a HIGH cast turnover rate. Harry Stone, Bull, and Dan Fielding are the only characters that were on the show from pilot to finale. The rest were littered in piecemeal. What the new version needs is a clear voice which takes time especailly for a half hour comedy. I would actually recommend an episode in like the "day in the life" episodes which were always the funniest.

Well said, most people probably didn’t watch the Original Night Court from the beginning and only connect with the show once Markie Post, Marsha Warfield and Charles Robinson were added after season one and beyond, the first couple of seasons were challenging and honestly I didn’t truly love the show until season 4 or 5. I definitely think people need to give the new version a chance although we aren’t in the golden era of TV sitcoms like the 80’s and 90’s, the original had that advantage

Only 3 episodes in, but the show has potential. They aren't disrespecting the past that much is true. In fact, I appreciate what they got right. John Larroquette IS AWESOME! He is clearly the best character on the show. From his introduction to him being the mentor to everyone, it just fits him. No, he's not the immature sex fiend (that was the first few seasons), but he's the man that used to be that, matured and given a second lease on life. A fantastic arc for his character.
The new cast are caricatures without a doubt, but it's going to take some time. I'm not really feeling the new DA. She just can't act. The hint at the judges darker side in episode 3 was really interesting. She's not just going to be goofy and silly at all times. Unlike Harry who would play off his magic, she's got real stakes and truly wants to make things better. I just wish she wasn't yelling her lines. The bailiff, can't really act either, but I think better lines would help her. So far, she's the B storyline character and it's really not working because just like the judge, she's the center of attention because of all that yelling and goofiness. She needs a straight man (or woman) to balance her. I think that maybe the clerk? And he's what I mean by my earlier statement; his character is just there. Even when he's given an opportunity to shine, he doesn't. He's a background character that plays that role well. Again, not a great actor, not funny, but more like a checkbox.

When we first meet Judge Harry stone, we the audience don't know what to make of him. We don't know what to expect.
We learned about him and his compassion from his "actions". By the the end of the first episode, we get him.
With the reboot we're "TOLD" that Judge Abby Stone is "just like her dad" in the opening scene.
As a member of the audience, it doesn't feel earned, so there isn't the same connection with Harry Stone vs Abby Stone.

Even Mork and Mindy was a spin off of Happy Days, as were Laverne and Shirley. The happens at the same place with the same stationary characters (other characters have gone but we are not spinning off to follow them). So I state this show is a sequel not a spin off.
As for revival, that implies a temporary celebration of the original. As this clearly intends to be its own thing and not just stand on the nostalgia of its predecessor cameo appearances notwithstanding, I say we have to wait to see if they are successful. If it is a fun flash whose originality drowns under the nostalgic pressure of the past, it is a revival. If it stands up and the new characters grow and flourish, it is its own thing. Of course seeing the old court room, judge's chambers and my favorite Dan brings back fond memories but I also know I can't compare this to the original. With that being said, I have watched all episodes so far and want to see it through but like the original, there needs to be some adjustments. Olivia is no good at all. They need a new prosecutor that is like a female version of the old Dan that can deliver and be that yin-yang. Speaking of Dan...since his arc is that now of the wise one, compassionate and sort of this father figure to Abby, it's good to know he is still snarky but they need to turn it up a bit. I get why on many levels you probably won't see the old filthy Dan of the past and in a way I like this matured Dan in his geriatric stage of life. Anyhow, the writers make a few tweaks, maybe replace a character (or 2.... clerk) and we may have something. Bonus points to bring back Roz or Bull for a one off guest spot.

Well, if fans of the original Night Court are not holding back, let me step up to the plate. I am a fan of the original. Grew up on it, and still watch it on DVD. Awaited the new Night Court with cautious optimism, but knowing how some reboots/continuations of popular 80s and 90s sitcoms have gone, I was preparing myself for the worst. Suffice it to say, I love it! Yes, it is different. It's almost 40 years since the original premiered. If it was the same, people would be complaining that it is nothing new. It has the spirit of the original. And yes, Dan Fielding is different. the Dan of the 80s would not last a minute in today's world. His womanizing would have gotten him drummed out a long time ago. It is refreshing to see his character updated and brought into the 21st century. Of course he will be different. He should be different. If he was just the same as he was four decades ago, he would be a very sad and pathetic person. People expect the other characters to already be fully developed by episode 2, which is more of a sad state of society than of the show. These characters fit perfectly into the world of Night Court, and I hope this show last for quite a few seasons.

Which means Harry was born in 1950. Melissa Rauch is 42, born in 1980, making Harry 30 when she was born, how is this far fetched? Just because he never mentioned having any children doesn’t make it impossible, maybe he didn’t know about her existence until after the show ended.

The character’s age is all that matters, and yes, the character could’ve been born when the show said she was born. The fact that Looper bothered to include that comment is an example of them once again acting like fan criticisms are smart even when they aren’t. Also, when Night Court ended has NOTHING to do with whether Judge Harry fathered a child away from court, so whoever wrote that comment that Looper read was a moron. President John Tyler still has a living grandson TODAY because he fathered a child in his 70s and then his son fathered children late in life. Men can do that, lol.

Everyone wants to be Cesar and instantly point their thumbs down while drinking a goblet of something cool to drink on their Napper Crapper 9000. Humor has also changed dramatically in the last 20 years. Watch the first episodes of Night Court when it started. The timing and writing took time to catch up. Unfortunately, we no longer have that kind of patience anymore. The "idea" of a Night Court sounds great but so many of the original cast have past and they have not done an episode that confronts that. Write that episode and the original fans will give it a chance. Otherwise, you disrespect the past and that always leads to fierce opposition to anything new.

Stone. Sure, some episodes revolved around the cast members themselves like Harry in the hospital or Bull becoming a wrestler but there was also a Russian entertainment group, a fortune teller that had better magic than Harry and the perfect family that would make the Brady Bunch cuss each other out. This new show seems to be all about the cast, very little about defendents and their quirky characteristics.

    My Thinking about the restart.
I believe they missed a golden opportunity here! I also think they misplaced the characters!
Melissa Rauch should of been the defense attorney. The only reason she became an attorney is because
her farther was an attorney that became a judge, she felt obligated. It's not until later that she realizes
her calling was to become a judge, when she puts on her dads robe for the first time. At the end of that show she pulls
out a rubber chicken from the inner pocket, looks up and says thanks dad... I know what I want to be now! How does she get the opportunity
to be a TEMP judge... When Dan gets taken off the bench.
The prosecutor you have now should of been the stenographer, she fits the bill.
The stenographer should of been in the cafeteria by the register, replacing the blind guy from the original series.
The judge should of been played by John Laoquette, although he gets into trouble, loses his seat on the bench and almost get disbarred, (same old Dan only older)
he catches a break when Martin Short (prosecutor) has a nervice breakdown, the same time they are deciding Dan's fate, Dan is given the ultimatum, night court as
the prosecutor or he'll be disbarred. He takes the spot.
The prosecutor up until he is found mentally unfit should be played by Martin Short. A man that spent his entire life alone and working day after day (no vacations even)
until he finally breaks down and is taken away in a jacket singing some off tune!
The correction office should of been played by Tiffany Haddish (senior CO) while the CO you have now as the new kid on the block stumbling her way around, very gullible.
The new judge should of been played by Matt LeBianc, serious enough to pull it off, yet has that same kid like mentality we loved in Harry T Stone. Now Matt
moves into Melissa's spot as defense attorney because he is up for Dan's seat and does not want to take any chances working during the day... WHY? Because he
is a trickster (not magic like harry, more like pranks).
Butch up the last cast member I missed.

The modern era we're living in just isn't as funny as decades prior--- and that's ok in some ways-- but I think if you are going to do a show that's fun and comedic in 2022 you've got to trust that your audience can still appreciate zaniness, be surprised, suffer fools gladly, and suspend reality for 30 minutes at a time.

Usually those episodes cram too much stuff in with the intent of hooking a crowd, but usually it's just too much to handle, and the show comes off as all over the place. However with that said, today's humor just isn't funny. There's no way in today's climate that Dan Fielding could even be 10% of the misogonistic character he used to be, which was part of the humor of the original show. It was the 3rd episode apparently where it really starts to take off, so I don't have any real grievance with the first 2. I have been longing for some Fielding schemes and some surreal situations so I just hope that it at least gets a second chance from the fans. Some of the funniest moments in 80s television and the best idea for a sitcom ever. My favourite scene was when we see Harry T. Stone talking to a defendant saying 'Now I personally love a puppet show, but I have to draw the line somewhere!'

I know better than to expect much out of the first season of any TV show. However, there is much work to do here... They need a second bailiff! Some of the greatest asides of the original were Bull and Selma, or Flo, or Roz bouncing off observations off each other.
The current prosecutor character is, at this point, truly unlikeable but time will tell if they tone down the "I don't wanna be here" tantrums. It's going to be hard enough to equal the comic genius that John Larroquette's Dan is capable of, even in the toned down writing that is inevitable today.
One of the greatest things about the original was the reoccurring and one-off characters coming through the courtroom. Only time and exceptional writing can pull off a repeat of that.
It took 3 seasons for the original to find it's correct cast and pacing. Unfortunately, I doubt NBC has the patience to see the show succeed. Hopefully, it will be given a chance on a streaming service if it is knocked off the network.

Some parts are a bit passe, like I could do without the laugh track and some of the callbacks feel a little forced. I did like that one of the latter episodes poked fun at one of the other canned audience reactions that was common in 1980s sitcoms. Finally, I like how the intro was updated - abbreviated but with very similar music.

I think it was funny. I have seen 3 episodes and will continue to watch. I think Melissa and John are doing a great job. People need to give it a chance.

I watched both episodes and thought the show is good. I'll continue to watch. I was a fan of the original show, but I don't expect the new version to be the same. Accept it on its own value. Change is good.

Here is my review. I watched the pilot, and the first episode. Then we watched some UA-cam clips of the old show for comparison and then an old episode of the original night court season 3. We watched the 1980s clip of Dan's new "vertically challenged" boss and the clip of when a young 20 something Terri Hatcher was blatantly hitting on Dan. To be honest, the older show was a riot, simply because there was no 'woke' or PC containment to the jokes. Dan was firing off "short guy" jokes one after the other (couldn't do that today) and with Terri Hatcher one sexual innuendo joke after the other (which you couldn't do today). In short, in order to walk on eggshells and not offend, or insult anyone watching, the new show is kinda trapped or constrained in a sanitized barely a chuckle here and there procedural comedy. Where as the old writers were able to utilize the full power of Dan Fielding (John Larroquette) with their sophomoric fraternity house style humor that got you laughing out loud, this version was kinda like visiting your grandma for dinner. Things are nice and polite. I hope the new writers will find a way around this problem and have me laughing out loud once more. I love this show.

Remakes Often have big shoes to fill! The remake of Quantum Leap is suffering from the same problem.

We're 4 to 5 episodes in, and although I have yet to laugh, I will be giving this show until the end of its first season, or even the beginning of its second (as it has just been announced that it has been renewed for a second season).
The problem I see is that this team of writers is trying to write jokes without understanding that comedy isn't written -- it is brought to life. And for the actors, their performances can only be as good as the material they are given and the direction they are given by their director...and so far, both have fallen flat, and so the performances have also been flat and underwhelming.
It is a shame that the producers and writers seem to have chosen to ignore the template that the original series established with colorful characters, absurdist humor, physical comedy, and weight given to unspoken reactions as much as the delivery of great comedic dialogue.
I would like the executive and creative teams behind this "new-boot" to remember that, and to not be afraid to fall back on the things that made the original series funny and great.

So far, I don't have any problems with NuNight Court at all! I think it's great and it'll get better as the season progresses and it'll be alright! The new season at least I feel like, with any other revival of an older series, it keeps people talking about the show in question! So, this is in a way, for NBC and Warner Bros. to make some money!

In the first season of the original Night Court different characters. If the reboot gets a second season it could see changes like the original over the years

How can you have good television when everything that makes good television is currently socially unacceptable by the people making the crap television. Hell, the original Bull rejected an offer to come back saying he would not last long around those types.

I like it, but the show needs a character like Bull. One reason it doesn't could be that we're not supposed to find characters like Bull, who have jobs where they carry a gun funny anymore. That has to be the only reason not to have a character like one of the most popular and loved characters from the original series. They don't even have a 2nd bailiff character. Gurgs, the one they have, could benefit from having a partner to play off of. If she makes a comment during a case, who's she going to make it to? An extra!

While so many of the original cast members have since died or are simply not part of the reboot, you can't expect to find out what became of the original characters in just one episode. While Melissa Rausch is 42 years old, the character she plays may not necessarily be the same age. Keep in mind stories that center around high school aged kids; most of those actors are of legal age that child labor laws don't apply. Also you can't expect Fielding to just literally fall through the ceiling and into (no typo) the floor, and especially at his age (John Larroquette is 75). While those stunts may be funny, they can also be very dangerous. I think the show needs more time to find its audience; pulling the plug on it now may be premature.

It took the original Night Court time to find its groove, hopefully this one has time to do the same.

I tried watching this. In my option l Couldn't get the jokes or the characters. I wish the story would include some of the adult children of the original characters. I could see Judge Stone's adopted son and his biological daughter. Matt and Quan Lee's daughter who would be half black and Asian. Christine's son . Dan Fielding having a child . Plus new characters.

It's not a reboot! It's a continuation, which you also said. They are different. Casino Royale was a reboot of James Bond. The story re-started. Like a computer that is rebooted, it is restarted. This is not a restart. A reboot would be a new cast playing the original characters and starting from the beginning.

I grew up with the original and as a kid- funny. As an adult, I tried watching it and it wasn’t great. Okay at best- so I’m not really surprised about a mediocre reboot.
