This is genius. One of the reasons people don't get undeveloped land is the effort needed to develop it. Do they get all the food they need from the pasture? How much supplement do they need?

This is an old traditional way of clearing land. We couldn't afford real farm land so we started with raw undeveloped land. It's still a lot of work to develop raw land into a workable farm, but can be done. When we first started clearing land with pigs, we would pick-up spent brewery grains from a local brewery. We fed out unlimited amounts of this and had them in a large paddock of raw land. At the end of the season we had pigs the size of about 70-100lbs. An old timer told me that was normal growth of an old fashioned style of raising pigs on just scraps from around the homestead. We now feed out a normal amount ration getting a more marketable sized pig. The bigger they get the more productive they are clearing land. Thanks for your questions.

have you tried the step in post? IMO it makes it easier to move the fence where the pigs have been and takes out the raking

Thanks for your comment! We use step in fencing here on the farm for varies things. But, its very expensive...compared to hand split posts. Also aluminum wire is much stronger with better conductive properties, better for predators.

Maybe a dumb question... but why not just put the fence a foot or so further away from the brush?

Thanks for your question. You could move the fence further away from the brush but they will still push the debris until they hit the fence. I leave a roadway wide enough for my tractor to fit through so I can build the next paddock in the series.

Thoughts on pig vs goats for clearing raw land?

Thanks for your question. Pigs will cultivate the land rooting and turning the soil bringing rocks and debris to the surface. Goats will eat the shrubs, bushes, and trees. creating more grass land over time. Using Pigs and Goats is the fastest way to clear land with animals. First use the goats to eat all the greens then bring in the pigs to root it all up. Good luck with our adventure!
